How do the Bionicle characters eat? Their masks are always in their "mouths", but are they mouths? And, how do they talk?

Officially, nothing has been said.

They don't eat they have stats similar to robots like: they don't have to eat and something powers them and so on

I agree with FFXF. In addition, they talk through their mouths ( Like everyone else ) and their mouths are there only to talk and wear masks, nothing more.

most people say that they cant eat or drink but they can breath
lady_toa_mahana
Jan 21 2003, 07:28 PM
yes, I find that truly odd. why can they breathe if they don't eat? but if you look up the mata nui lexicon on bionicle.com, they make a mention to some sort of fruit that gives the eater energy...or something in that vein.

True...
And in the MNOLG, Takua is told to eat some Berry-like... thing.
So they must eat.
In all likelehood, they probably remove their mask to eat- Their Kanohi grant them no powers, so removing their mask makes them no less vulnerable than any other time.

In Onu-Koro in the MNOLG there's a guy selling fresh fish. Why would you sell fresh fish if you can't eat?
XK Nuva
Jan 21 2003, 09:49 PM
Also in the MNOLG, a matoran is sitting on a rock, chewing a piece of straw threw his mask! Therefore, along with the consumption of fish and bula berries, I believe matoran do eat and that they can eat through their masks as well!
Bonehead108
Jan 21 2003, 09:50 PM
Maybe he was selling the fish as pets? I've never heard of Bionicle characters who had pets.
How do Matoran, Turaga, and Toa talk if they have a mask on their face? The masks are held by their mouths.

hm. maybe gali would go wacky and hit the bohrok with the fish. she has no more powers, so what could it hurt, right?

In Ga-Koro, there are Matoran talking about the fish that they caught. Another is walking around with a fishing pole. Maybe they fish for sport?

I'm pretty sure they eat. You woudlnt' buy dead fish for pets.

Jan 21 2003, 11:45 PM
As from what I see, they eat, and there is a hole in all masks. As seen outside Onu-Koro in the MNOLG, a guy is chewing grass through the hole onhis Pakari. In the village itself, they sell fresh fish (for eating), and in The GBA game, you eat fruits to heal. So, it's safe to say that at least Matoran (Toa? I dunno) eat.

Jan 21 2003, 11:47 PM
Honestly...we REALLY don't know.
GregF hasn't answered that question that I know of, so at this time it's only a guess.
They were selling fish to the villagers...but that could be to feed other animals (which would then imply that they eat anyway)
So yeah, my guess is that they do eat. Though we'll probably never actually see them do it.

maybe they talk when they have masks on because there mouth hole goes all the through so that means they chould talk behind the mask

Due to the above given evidence, I'm convinced they eat. If they metabolize food for energy, then they must have some kind of digestive system. I guess you could take this eating business two ways: it reinforces either the biological aspect or the "robotic" aspect of the islanders.
Some roboticists have already made a robot that burns sugar to recharge its batteries. A similar system could be in the Matorans.
Alternatively, they have fleshy digestive tracts with intestines.
Hmm. You know, I like the robot idea better.

The matoran could eat from what beleive. But is it something we have to see to beleive it? The matoran are too busy fighting bohrok and rahi to be worried about eating.

I see why some might be puzzled by the technicalities involved in being able to eat while having a mask attached to your mouth. However, this problem only arises if we take the toy form as their literal body design. I think the changes in the Mask of Light movie will solve this. If you recall, the islanders' kanohi are supposed to be modified slightly for the movie so that they can show emotion/talk with their mouths. It follows that eating would be (at least hypothetically) easier with such changes made. Whaddaya think?

Someone already did ask GregF, and he said he didn't know whether or not they ate (or slept, either, for that matter).
They have to have some kind of fuel... and we didn't see any gas stations or recharge stations in the MNOLG. My guess is that they DO eat (for the reasons previous posters have stated -- selling fish, raising livestock, energy-increasing berries, etc.), but that LEGO will never get into the specifics. (They will probably never show us a Matoran picnic.)

I dunno how they could eat, my theory is that they could absorb energy or something... maybe those lightstones could come into play... maybe they dont need to eat, just remember, they are mechanical robots.
EDIT: Well duh they sleep, have u seen what the Bohrok look like when they are in their canisters, or go out of comission when their Krana fell out, or got vaporized, zapped or something?

EDIT: brillbionicleidiot, That thingy in the middle of their face is where well, the mask connects!

I think that they eat through the mask, mayb there's a mouth-hole where the mask's "mouth" is. But, i just think that they eat. I mean, they ARE alive, so they need to eat.

Maybe they absorb food through their masks, like a paramecium.

Has anyone ever seen the pictures of the movie Toa? You can see their mouth, and they have hands. The hands could pick up food and put the food in their mouths and they could chew it, and they could let the food slide down their throats, and the food could end up in the stomach, and....*Monolyth goes on all about the physics of the Toa and he gets into all the gory details*
Basicly, they eat jusat like us.

Good point. The Bohrok are bio-mechanical creations, and the Matoran make that bzzt sound. Maybe they are androids and break food down into energy for use, if they do eat.

oh, boy, another physical matoran question! well, we could ask a rocket scientist to explain how some robots talk, but they could never fit such a complex system into a tiny tohunga body. I think they eat and I've got backup

1."shock made me open my MOUTH" remember comic #2 when Lewa was trying to get a kakama how could water get into his mouth when he had his mask on? 2. fish why would they catch and sell fish? To eat! 3. The Matorian was chewing a piece of straw with his mask on. O.K. that may not be much but it was all I could think of. They probily have a hole in thier mask to breath and eat with.

Although not stated by Lego, I know for a fact that they breath. Sick Po-koro's and Kapura's coughs and sneezes, the Le-koronans play wind instruments(there was something that sounded like a tuba in there(I play it, so I know the physics)). The insruments, especially the tuba-like thing, shows that they breathe and can hold their breath, and that their lips can move very freely(brass instruments=vibrating lips). That also allows speech. Besides, if they didn't breathe, why is there a kaukau?!?!? As for eating, I'm less sure, but still pretty positive. Fish, berries, livestock(I have a good feeling that not everyone on Mata-Nui are vegetarians), the grain that guy was chewing on, and several other things.
