The void is Makuta "house" he is nothing, so he lives in a void, those pieces are just matoran, rahi that have visited him, rember the first Makuta description... "NO ONE HAS LIVED AND SEEN HIM"

Makuta's weakness probably is bright light as the MoL trailer said something like 'A mask of light to defeat the darkness'.
How many innocent Matoran visited Makuta before the Toa attacked him? I don't really wanna know!

His weakness is light,because that's why they need a Mask of Light.Those pieces were sort of a Masterbuilder set,so Makuta can take any form

I think you are right...it is like it says in someone's avatar, without darkness there is no light. The opposite of darkness is light, so light should be the weakness of darkness and vice versa...but that leaves them euqally balanced. I've confused myself...

on topic: Possibly. Light always beats darkness (Jan, ken, po talk).

Makuta had been building a power sorce for himself and called it the void as soon as he arrived upon Mata-nui, using parts from Rahi that were not powerful enough to add to his army and waited to strike. But his plans were inturpted when the toa arrived and struck his army in half. He was aware of them getting closer to him, but he never expected that they would combine their powers and destory his void, his source of power. So, without pieces to rebuild hiw physical self, he escaped as a spirit, untill he found another swarm of week Rahi, and started using them... untill he had a powerful form.

well I think that the void is Makuta's source of power. I mean, if you watch the "The toa battle makuta and the bohrok are revealed" movie, you notice that the tentacles come out of the void.
