Somewhere in a topic GregF said that the reason Makuta acts is because the Mask of Light was found.

Now I wonder why he would so suddenly release the Rahshki and plague Mata Nui once more.

I agree. The mask of light(it's not a Voldemort, you can say it's name) has so much power, it could destroy Makuta. but if Makuta has it...*shudders*

Whoever has the MoL will be powerful. Makuta must know this and wants the power for himself.

I'm not sure why makuta is scared of the mask of light, he has them for hands!!! ( just look at the pics for the set!)
although, the mol's on his hands look protodermic....

Perhaps he tried to create it himself, matching the power, and only half succeeded, using them as enhancements for his fists...

It makes me feel so special that everyone is useing my idea! ! !

back on topic: I agree with the shodow theory. thats probably how the movie will go. they will realize the MOL is why makuta is there and they will destroy the mask. no light, no shadows. But there is that creepy darkness

Well, if you know if someone could grab a gun and shoot you in the head with it, would you just sit there and let him get it? Naturally not.
Same thing goes for Makuta. He wants to keep the Matoran from finding the ToL with the Mask of Light. "Trust in the Mask, let it be your guide." "The Search for the 7th Toa." Think about it. Makuta sends out his spawns, the Rahkshi, to stop the Matoran on their quest for the ToL, take the Mask and thus end any threat to his dominion over Mata-Nui.
