Spartan-117
I first of all dont want to offend anyone on this, but its just a thought.

As you may have noticed, their is a god like entity, Mata Nui, and a Devil like entity, Makuta. Now I noticed, seeing as Mata Nui, came from the sky, he could be considered "the god" of their world. And Makuta, deep down below, could be considered, their devil. Notice that the toa always go down, deep to get to the enemy. Just like the underworld. And Kini-Nui acts as a, gateway to the underworld. And seeing as the toa were sent from above, they could be like, Gods liberators, or, something mighty from above. And the rahkshi, could even be considered demons of Makuta. Yet in Bionicle, the Underworld, and their world depend more on Light vs Dark (mask of light), and the elements are a balance between the two, and the toa are the good elements, and rahkshi are the bad. Just something that randomly popped into my head during boring math class...

(just something to post)...Could the toa of light, (or mask of light) be Mata Nui, yet he Chose Takua, to house his power, and his spirit?
Kopaka Avenger
Yeah I agree, I've always thought that bionicle has had some religious undertones.
Takua1623:ToaofMind
You said that maybe Mata-Nui was the tol or the mol. The tol is not Mata-Nui. What I'm wondering is, Mata-Nui had to have had a form when he went to the island Mata-Nui, right? So he probily chose to go in the form of a something like they could realese a set with Mata-Nui in that form. So he must have a mask. Was it the mol? That would explain why Makuta came back when the mol was found.

Mata-Nui-ologist
Well I totally see what you are saying. Since you are using the God (good) vs. Devil (bad) analogy. I will follow your lead. I stated in another topic that the Makuta's Rahkshi are the parallel or Mata Nui's toa are basically like you said they are elements of there creators. There for they are paralle. Even the size of the sets are almost (or seem to be) similar.

I agree totally with you that BIONICLE has very religious undertones. I don't think The Mask of Light is Mata Nui. I think it is more of a symbol similar to the way the Cross is the symbol (so to speak) of God here on earth.

ANd as far as your underworld analogy. I concur once again with your theory. Think about it BIONCLE reflects some of the aspects of alot of Ancient Mythology. It is seems to be a Modern Mythology. That is one reason why I like it. In Greek/Roman Mythology, heros went down into Taraus (I think i misspelled it) Rule by Pluto or Hades, Jupiter or Zeus' evil brother . In Kemet (also know to those that dont' know Africa's true name for it, Egypt) Mythology there was an underworld ruled by Seth the evil brother of Osiris. I can go on and on. Ever ancient civilization mythological figures had a ruler of the under world. Including the Mayas, Inca, Assyrians, Nubians, Chinese, I think even India's Mythological figures have a ruller of the Underworld.

I find it so fancinating.

Uh, Warbohrok, the island was named after Mata-Nui. You must be new to bionicle or something. You can PM me and I'll tell you all about the beginning, since you seem to know everything past that. When you guys say it parallels mythology, I understand, but don't say it parallels the bible, cause Satan doesn't rule down there. He gets tortured there, too. He just is the one that tempts on Earth. It's a widespread misconception. And I'm sorta off topic again. I don't think it parallels Greek mythology, but it does go along the Mayan ideas.
Spartan-117
I know it doesn't parraell any mythology, but maybe takes ideas from multiple ones. people seem to be deeply interested in this topic, seeing as posts are more than one sentence long.

And the great beings, I belive they have a past relationship with Mata-Nui and Makuta (mata nui and makuta are brothers). So maybe, since the TOL is in the shape of a toa, then the power of light comes above from where the great beings are. And maybe this all ties in to how the toa came into being.
Minaku Yama Ultimate Fate
to address post one in the Mata-Nui legend it says Makuta followed Mata-Nui from Paradise...so Mata-Nui and Makuta re two great beings from the same plain.
Light Yagami
The thing is, why did mata nui and makuta leave paradise in the first place? I think this is something that furture story arcs( after makuta dies) will focus on.
Time Agent
This seems much too serious, god and satan, if bionicle was based on these religious topics it would be kind of scary. I don't believe that Bionicle was meant to have anything to do modern day religion. The people or matoran in the storyline have their own religion based on mata nui I suppose.
Makuta Master
Well, Makuta didn't come from below, he came from Paradise. He lives below.

Just saying. Interesting theory.
Super Toa of light
Mata-Nui and Makuta are just servants not leaders.
Fikou Pest Control
Gali refers to the 'great beings' when she is being closed in by the Nui-Jaga.
QUOTE (Gali @ Comic 2)
Great beings, give me strength...

I don't think Mata Nui is one of those.
Also, Makuta Master is right.
QUOTE (Turaga (in conference) @ Comic 2)
But Mata Nui was followed by his brother, the evil Makuta.

Also, why didn't we get a Makuta as a Tohunga set?
QUOTE (Tahu @ Kini-Nui)
But you are but a Tohunga!
IncliningPizza
God is a powerful god he as always been and will always be.
Do you know one thing about why we can't see his face?
It is because it is to holy.

but with (i hate it when i say his name) his real name is lucifer
Maybe lucifer is the because i think he had a fight with god in heaven
probably the same goes for bionicle
just a theory though
shaunseven
i agree with makuta master, and raptordx1. super toa of light is also right! why would makuta and mata-nui want to leave paradise, when they could stay in paradise? the good god must have sent mata-nui down to help the matoran have vurtues in life, and then, the evil underworld god from their version of tartaurus comes along and tells makuta to follow. its that sympol, if you think about it!!!

Hasn't anyone noticed that most things have the same theme?
Good Vs Evil, Light Vs Dark, Good reigns above, Evil lurks Below, it's in everything - It's just the way it is.
Hewkii Inika
I agree with Lord Lupus, everything is that way, Good vs Evil!
GaliGee
The reason Bionicle echoes so many religious themes is that these are the most important and riveting concepts to ever cross our minds, and they make for awesome stories that the LEGO Corporation can feel good about presenting to kids. We parents like the fact that the storyline is uplifting and positive, with examples of working together, sacrificing one's own safety to protect the vulnerable, and upholding truth and light in a dangerous world.

My personal theory is, as FPC implied, that the Great Beings are really the God of the story, not Mata Nui. The spirit brothers Mata Nui and Makuta were created by the Great Beings-- Mata Nui is not superior to Makuta, but on the same level. I think they left Paradise, in Mata Nui's case, to explore and bring joy to the islanders, and in Makuta's case, to wreck his brother's work. The Toa are kind of like angels, agents of good to battle the demons of Makuta (Rahkshi and infected things, the infection is a lot like demonic possession).

Note that the MoL trailer calls Makuta "one immortal enemy"... setup for more sequels? huh.gif

Yes, and no. When the Spirit named Mata Nui came down from paradise the islanders (Turaga and Matoran) named the island after him. Mata Nui is a person and is the name of the island.

I think Mata Nui would not be the MoL or the ToL. I think Mata Nui is just the spirit and a big rock near the Telescope.
Spartan-117
GaliGee, I was going to say the toa were like angels, but didn't know if that was exactly, correct, if you know what I mean.
Rahi Zaku
I agree with everything that has been said here, and something to add about the Rahkshi being demons of Makuta:

On the figures.com review of the Rahkshi, it says that they are "born from the ribs of the Mighty Mkuta". This might not LITERALLY be what happens in the storyline, but it's obviously a reference to Adam and Eve....

...hmm, this strengthens my weird idea tht all 6 Rahkshi are female...

Please, don't Spam. I see you're new, so I'll let it go. anyway, that seems just like it's true! boy, if lego mean't for this, then they are really clever!
MataNuiHero
Well, Satan was an angel but became corrupt, sortof like Makuta. I'm not sure if he was a great being, but he did come from paradise, and became corrupt sorta. He was jealous of the tohunga's love for Mata-Nui, and he wanted them to praise him. Relating a little to God and Satan.

But many stories relate to religious themes. Like Lord of the Rings for example. even though J.R.R. Tolkien was a christian. [I think.]

I think of the Toa like angels, and the Rahkshi as demons. But I'm not going to replace god for a character in the Storyline, I don't want to worship any Idols.

...I hate to really say this but...

Duh.

Bad vs. Good IS the struggle. Be it outside or inside influences...that's what ALWAYS creates conflicts.

It's the cliche Devil and Angel on your shoulder.

------------

I mean....what else could you have besides Good vs. Evil? Good vs. Good? Evil vs. Evil? There would still be sides.

But this is turning into a religious discussion...which should go in CoT (if not get closed outright)

Yep. That sums it up.
Thanks to T-Hybrid for pointing out that this is becoming a religious topic -- and of course, such topics are not allowed on BZP.

Topic closed.
