Takanuva is the legendary 7th Toa, the Toa of Light, who is destined to free the Matoran from the dark power of Makuta. Takanuva is noble and wise, and possesses a great deal of knowledge about the history of Mata Nui and its people. However, he has much to learn in a short time if he is going to save the island from Makuta. Takanuva wears the Kanohi Avohkii, the Great Mask of Light, and carries the Staff of Light.

This is what the cd of Takanuva says. When Bionicle begin in the sotries you could read that the Turaga predicted that the Toa whould come and free them from the evil Makuta. It didn't work and now Takanuva has arrived and now is said that he sould free the island from the evil Makuta. That's confussing .

Are the toa only on Mata Nui to protect the matoran from the rahi or was there more behind it? And why is it that Takanuva shows up just now?

The initial prophecy was not wrong.. if the Toa had not appeared and defeated Makuta's Rahi, and the Bohrok, and the Bohrok-Kal, then Takanuva would never have had the opportunity to challenge Makuta (because the master of shadows would have been just too powerful). You needed the six Toa in order for there to be the seventh...
