ok in the recent release of information about takanuva it said that his mask could turn people good instead of evil (well thats not exactly what it said but it meant the same) so what i think is that takanuva will turn makuta good and then he will fuse with takanuva. that is why they fuse
post your comments about my theory here

I don't think so. Makuta is total darkness. He is the hate in every matoran's heart(at least I think that's what the mnolg said). That Avohkii power probably only works on weaker enemies. Light must conquer darkness. And since where there is light, there is also darkness, that is probably why they fuse. So light will combine with darkness for a neutral form.

No the Mask of light turns enemys anger into peaceful feelings so that is not how they combine . Nice theory though.

Let me check. *goes and checks* doesn't say it can turn someone bad into good so I don't think thats how they will combine.

But Makuta is evil. He wouldn't want to be neutralised, even if Takanuva wanted to sacrifice himself to do so! And I agree with you about it only working on weaker enemies, otherwise it would just be: Use MoL, end of story. Not a good movie. And just because there's a set combiner, are we sure that that means that they even do merge? I thought it wa sjust another Makuta form.
