They are not merley robots. They have a civilization both primitive and advanced. I believe they live, though maybe not as we think of life, but Kopaka pointed out that the Bohrok Kal do not live as we know life, for they are simply machines.

The inhabitants of Mata Nui are only a metallic, but they are organic. Hard to explain, like if you take medicine with silver in it, your skin will turn silver. That is why they cancelled that medicine. Well, your skin is metallic, it can move, but it is metallic. Same with the Matoran.
