He is a boy,but this is a highly argued topic(about bieng Takua)so it may be closed.

Takanuva is male, and he's also not Takua.
Takanuva is trapped deep underground, and Takua is the one to find him.

Perhaps it's coincidence, but it's most probably destiny that he has a similar name...
