We know that. But I think it is there to guard the entrance to Makuta's lair the Bohrok nests and other miscelanious underground tunnels.

The Kini-Nui was most likely, before the time of Makuta, a center for worshiping their great god Mata Nui, and was where Mata Nui lived. However, when Makuta took over the island, it became his lair Mangaia and now leads to the underground realms.
The Kini-Nui is very near the Amaja-Nui/Circle and the Suva Kaita, whjich may be the structure in the middle of the Kini-Nui.

i think that it is a temple that was once used to worship mata-nui, and now it is a place where the turaga meet to discuss issues and legends and make anouncements. for all we know kini-nui could have been the home of mata-nui himself

what the heck is the suva kiata? Ill look that up in the lingo...anyway, the kini-nui isnt sacred like the triforce or anything. It's just a temple built to honor the toa and mata-nui. And did you know uf you take a toas face, and look at the chin, it looks like the kini-nui!

It was built at the center at the island to honor Mata-Nui, but when Makuta came, he built his base under it. The Turaga now meet there to tell stories and to make decisions.
