O.K., here's my theory: A borhok of each element was dunked in proto, only they drop the shields and the kraata of their powers, "infect" the handshields but they get splashed w/ proto.

I agree, but the Bohrok have krana, not Kraata. I think they were just the first bohrok manufactured, or the prototype bohrok.

No, Greg's said that Protodermis wasn't involved. All we've got is that they were mutated by Bahrag powers, and that they're slightly less under the control of the Bahrag than the Bohrok.
