I am trying to figure that out... I am about to PM GregF, and look at Kini-nui's "bios", if you can call it a bios. But first your answers!
The toa-kini's, as I call them, might be made to honor them, but might be set up for another purpose. Thesame purpose as the Kini-nui has, the Kini which go's underground, to Metru-nui, to the Bahrag, to Makuta!
What where the kini's?

The Kinis are small temples in each Koro.

The suvas are the temples in each Koro. Kini Nui is the massive temple which doubles as a gateway to the temple of Mangaia, Makuta's realm.

Each village has a Suva and a Toa-Kini ( Ta-Kini , Ko-Kini etc. ) The Kini are what the Toa use to teleport from the Kini-Nui
or anouther village to their own Wahi ( in the game anyway , now for in
the storyline , read on ) The Kini are shrines near the center of a village
in which Matoran celebrate , respect , and honor their Toa .

The Suvas are Shrines.
The Kini-Nui is a massive temple.
But the Kinis...
To be honest with you, I don't believe anybody really knows where they are. However, I do believe that they may in fact be in Bionicle: The Game. If you look at the screenshots, occasionly you see the Toa and Toa Nuva in the massive temples with carvings of themselves on it. Ask someone who has the game. I know Lord Lupus has beaten it. I don't know anybody else, though.

Kini
A Temple; a place of learning and wisdom where the Turaga recount the legends of Mata Nui.
Look here and see it in the Lexicon

SUVA means SHRINE.
KINI means TEMPLE.
NUI can mean either LARGE or in some rare cases, SIX.
So, Ta-Suva is Shrine to Tahu (Where his masks are stored)
"Ta-Kini" is Tahu's Temple
"Kini-Nui" is "Large Temple," and it has other purposes of which you know already.
The individual Toa Kinis may have special powers of which I am not currently aware of.
Does that help?

All the stuff you are saying I understand, but what is the purpose of the Kini-nui? I gives an entrance to Makuta, the shadow who guards the door, to Metru-nui, and to the Bohrok nest. I didn't ask what it is, but who (who set it there), and why (What did the one who set the temple there wanted to do with it?)
Clear?

Well, no idea I have, except that it probarly built by the Matoran(or Mata-Nui or Makuta) to make an entrance back to Metru-Nui when they have the chance. Unfortunally, Makuta putted Mata-Nui into a deep sleep with very unbelieveable reason(spoiler!:He said he wanted to prevant Mata-Nui to get more pain in MOL.), and he make the Kini-Nui his own lair.
