Today we have quite a treat for you guys. Due to what we're pretty sure is an error on the part of Toys 'R' Us, our very own Blog Leader DeeVee was able to obtain the Marvel Avengers constraction sets recently. That means some early reviews for you guys! We're kicking things off today with Captain America. Read on to see if this defender of freedom should be part of your collection!
From the design of the box to the instruction manual, these are the first things you see before building the set.
The HEROIC CAPTAIN AMERICA, dear TRUE BELIEVERS, comes in a BODACIOUS BOX. It is has a LARGE HEIGHT, and is QUITE SUBSTANTIAL, SUPERFANS. It is, indeed, if one were to listen to rumours that float on vines that also carry grapes, the same sort of box that those others, those SUPPOSED HEROES from that OTHER COMIC COMPANY, those RAPSCALLIONS FROM DC, came in the first wave of the LEGO SUPERHERO ULTRABUILD FIGUREs. But in this wave the boxes are instead bracketed in RIGHTEOUS RED.
On the front you'll see the SPECTACULAR SPLENDOR of our HERO and FRIEND, CAPTAIN AMERICA. Wearing the POWERFUL IRON ARMOUR afforded to him by the ever GRACIOUS and HUMBLE IRON MAN, our BRAVE HERO is READY FOR ACTION. On the back of the box, you'll see a shot of our MARVELOUS PATRIOT in SUPERHERO ACTION, as well as pictures depicting the AWE-INDUCING COMBINATION of the INVINCIBLE IRON MAN and our friend CAPTAIN AMERICA.
Somewhere, TRUE BELIEVERS, on this box are the BEAUTIFUL, the RAVISHING, the ALWAYS GRACEFUL legal disclaimers.
Half the fun is had building the set. How fun is it to build and how easy or challenging is it?
When engaged in the COOL CONSTRUCTION of our HERO, you'll discover that things are different, yet similar. Like a dream you don't remember but, perhaps, is on the tip of your mind, hanging like a leaf on the branch in autumn. TRUE BELIEVERS, this is a build for THE AGES.
Though one may expect just a SIMPLE, PEDESTRIAN HERO FACTORY style build, CAPTAIN AMERICA, like he so often does, makes things MORE COMPLICATED and AWESOME. His torso and limbs are STANDARD HERO FACTORY fare, but fear not, SUPERFANS! Attached to his back are several of the HERO FACTORY limb parts, and the connection of CAPTAIN AMERICA'S IRON POWER ARMOUR is actually a REALLY COOL and REALLY NEAT design. It utilizes the NEW BUILDING SYSTEM in a DIFFERENT AND APPEALING manner, making the STANDARD AND FAMILIAR HERO build NEW AND EXCITING.
MARVEL, DEAR READER, at this AMAZING and SUPERFLUOUSLY ADJECTIVE HEAVY design, for it is a DESIGN FOR THE AGES.
Now that the set is complete, we can critique how it looks from every angle. New or interesting pieces can also be examined here.
As an EVERYMAN, our VALIANT AND SELFLESS HERO, CAPTAIN AMERICA possesses little in the way of NEW AND INTERESTING parts. (Though he does contain FIVE EXTRA blue pin/axles).
Though, as we are always keen to report, he does possess a SMALL HANDFUL of parts with COSMIC SIGNIFICANCE.
Amongst these PARTICULAR PARTS of PROFUNDITY:
- THE MIGHTY SHIELD that when CAPTAIN AMERICA throws causes all those who OPPOSE HIM to YIELD
- THE MIGHTY, CHISELED visage of our FRIEND AND LEGEND, CAPTAIN AMERICA
- THE FRIGHTENINGLY FIERCE FRICTION JOINTS that ELONGATE the POWERFUL, OLYMPIAN LEGS of CAPTAIN AMERICA and allow him to achieve HEROIC poses UNENCUMBERED
- THE MUSCLED, RIPPED PECTORAL MUSCLES of CAPTAIN AMERICA printed with the CHIVALROUS CHAIN and AMERICAN STAR
- And, fear not, TRUE BELIEVERS, the NEW ARMOUR parts DESTINED for MASS RELEASE in this SUPER SUMMER'S HERO FACTORY Breakout Wave 2
It is, to this MYTHICAL and MYSTERIOUS piece of ARMOUR that we turn to now.
Though it is of a SLIGHTLY SMALLER size than it's CONVEX COUSIN from HERO FACTORY Breakout Wave 1, make no mistake, DEAR READER, that this piece is SIGNIFICANTLY LARGE. Consisting of a ROUGHLY RECTANGULAR design, with some VENTAL FLARES, this piece works really well as CAPTAIN AMERICA'S BOOT TOPS. It gives our STAR-SPANGLED HERO a very STRONG AND HEROIC costume, ER, SUIT.
CAPTAIN AMERICA looks STRONG AND HEROIC. His IRON POWER ARMOUR lends his shoulders a WIDE AND POWERFUL look, and the new HERO FACTORY ARMOUR on his legs gives him a HEROIC, BOOTED look. His PATRIOTIC COLOURS are arranged in a PLEASING WELL-ORGANIZED way. The RIGHTEOUS RED is used for boots and gloves, as well as the AMERICAN STRIPES that ring his MIGHTY SHIELD. The BOLD BLUE is used for his pants, cowl, and MANLY SHELF CHEST.
TRUE BELIEVERS, may we always love the HEROIC SHELF CHEST.
FEAR NOT! His cowl, though hidden in so many TERRIBLE PROMO SHOTS does indeed carry the WINGS OF FREEDOM on the side.
Overall, he does indeed look like our LIBERTY LOVING CAPTAIN AMERICA.
It is the opinion of this ESTEEMED REVIEWER, that CAPTAIN AMERICA does a better job of looking like his namesake than any of the DC sets from the first wave.
Before we adjourn to the PLAYABILITY, SUPERFANS, let's first marvel at the way the INSTRUCTFUL INSTRUCTIONS desire we pose CAPTAIN AMERICA'S MIGHT IRON POWER ARMOUR SHOULDERS.
You are forgiven, TRUE BELIEVERS, if you thought CAPTAIN AMERICA looked UTTERLY RIDICULOUS like this in all the promo material. Because he does. However, these panels fold down NEATLY AND COMPACTLY and they look FANTASTICALLY FIT this way.
The other half of the fun is in playing with the set. How well does the set function and is it enjoyable to play with?
When CAPTAIN AMERICA throws his MIGHTY SHIELD, all those who OPPOSE HIS SHIELD must YIELD. If he's led to a FIGHT and a DUEL IS DUE, then the RED AND WHITE AND BLUE will COME THROUGH.
TRUE BELIEVERS, SUPERFANS, DEAR READERS, CAPTAIN AMERICA has the same POINTEDLY PERFECT POINTS of articulation as standard HERO FACTORY era constraction figures. He is capable of some TRULY INSPIRING poses. Unfortunately, due to his IRON POWER ARMOUR, provided, once again, by the SUAVE and BRILLIANT IRON MAN, his shoulder articulation is hindered. Posing the shoulder flaps as shown in all the TERRIBLE PROMO WORK does alleviate this, but only a little, as the over-the-shoulder strap style of the build inherently limits the shoulder socket. However, this intrusion is MINIMAL and MOSTLY IGNORABLE.
LIKE BUCKY. THERE'S NO WAY THAT GUY COMES BACK TO BE IMPORTANT, RIGHT?
And of course, the AVENGERS ASSEMBLE:
Once it's all said and done, how does the set stack up? Should I get it?
What's to like?
- HEROIC BUILD
- CONSISTENT COLOURS
- IMPRESSIVE POWER ARMOUR
- COOL PARTS
- NICE DETAILING
- MIGHTY SHIELD
What's not to like?
- RESTRICTIVE SHOULDER ARMOUR
- LESS-OBVIOUS-THAN-DESIRED WINGS OF FREEDOM
- LOW NUMBER OF NEW MOULDS
- I'M TRYING, TRUE BELIEVERS BUT THIS SET IS AWESOME
Overall, SUPERFANS, your ESTEEMED REVIEWER thinks you should get this set the same way the HULK should get ANGER MANAGEMENT COUNSELING. And the same way AGENT COULSON should get his OWN FILM.
Until next time, EXCELSIOR!
Be sure to thank Pat in the Talkback for his review - these things don't come together by themselves. And of course keep checking back for more set reviews and LEGO news right here on BZPower!
