Toy Fair 2017: The LEGO Batman Movie and DC Superheroes
Hot Bionicle NewsTuesday, February 21st, 2017 at 10:23am by Andrew, BZPower News Manager

Today in our ever-growing Toy Fair 2017 coverage we're taking a look at all things DC. This includes The LEGO Batman Movie, the new DC Superhero Girls line, and... not much else. DC seems to be going all-in with the movie tie-ins and minidolls this year, and shifting focus away from their more comic and cartoon-based sets. To see sets we're getting as a result, read on!

    The LEGO Batman Movie

Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 01

    70900 The Joker Balloon Escape

Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 37

    124 pieces. Age 6+
    $14.99 (USD) $16.99 (CAD)
    Available in January

As anyone who has seen The LEGO Batman Movie can tell you, the bomb in this set is much too small. Still, at the smallest price point you get the main hero and the villain who means nothing at all to him, as well as the balloon pack which matches the movie perfectly.

    70901 Mr. Freeze Ice Attack

Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 33

    201 pieces. Age 7+
    $19.99 (USD) $24.99 (CAD)
    Available in December 2016

Mr. Freeze's mech is another spot-on recreation of what we see in the film, even if it looks a bit goofy and awkward. Like the previous set, this model comes with a small part of the power plant from the film's opening sequence, with the idea being that if you buy all of them you can make a larger play area.

    70902 Catwoman Catcycle Chase

Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 38

    139 pieces. Age 7+
    $19.99 (USD) $24.99 (CAD)
    Available in January

This set seems a bit odd - I believe Catwoman's motorcycle does appear in the film, but she never goes up against Batgirl and Robin. It's a pretty basic model with not a lot going on, serving mainly as an inexpensive way to get a couple of the main characters.

    70903 The Riddler Riddle Racer

Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 36

    254 pieces. Age 7+
    $29.99 (USD) $39.99 (CAD)
    Available in January

The Riddler's vehicle didn't appear on screen for very long, but it's still a very sporty driving machine. And the minifigs are very unique here and are sure to call to any DC fan.

    70904 Clayface Splat Attack

Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 35

    448 pieces. Age 8+
    $34.99 (USD) $44.99 (CAD)
    Available in January

I'm sensing a pattern in a lot of these sets, where individual elements will be accurate but the scene as a whole is something that didn't take place in the film. I don't recall the mayor of Gotham ever being stuck in clay, but Clayface looks like a very intriguing build and one that I definitely want to pick up.

    70905 The Batmobile

Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 39

    581 pieces. Age 8+
    $59.99 (USD) $74.99 (CAD)
    Available in December 2016

The Batmobile never seems to stay the same from movie to movie, and in a film where Batman is a Master Builder, it gets revamped a couple of times. The main iteration, seen here, has a lot of style and nice details. I think the only downside is the villains it includes are a bit obscure by most standards.

    70906 The Joker Notorious Lowrider

Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 34

    433 pieces. Age 8+
    $49.99 (USD) $64.99 (CAD)
    Available in December 2016

I wish I had gotten a better picture of this set, but it's been available for a while so it's not a big deal. The lowrider just oozes style and looks great with all that purple. It's the perfect ride for the Clown Prince of Crime.

    70907 Killer Croc Tail-Gator

Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 32

    460 pieces. Age 8+
    $69.99 (USD) $89.99 (CAD)
    Available in January

I don't think this vehicle appears until closer to the end of the movie, but Killer Croc has a great appearance early on that got some laughs both times I saw the film. The bat-jetski shows up as well, although never in an action scene. I think my favorite part here has to be the ball joint printed to look like an 8-ball. Now we just need the other 14...

    70908 The Scuttler

Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 31

    775 pieces. Age 9+
    $79.99 (USD) $99.99 (CAD)
    Available in January

I was impressed by how much fun and personality this vehicle had in the movie, and think they did a great job making it an actual set. The minifig choice is pretty spot on for the scene where it makes its first appearance and has several exclusive figures.

    70909 Batcave Break-in

Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 40

    1047 pieces. Age 8+
    $99.99 (USD) $129.99 (CAD)
    Available in December 2016

I appreciate what they were going for in this set, and in many ways it reminds me of Lord Business' Evil Lair from The LEGO Movie. In both films, the locations are so awesome and full of details that it's impossible to capture them in an affordable LEGO set. I do wish this was the $150 set instead of Arkham, just so they could have made it that much better.

    70910 Scarecrow Special Delivery

    204 pieces. Age 7+
    $19.99 (USD) $24.99 (CAD)
    Available in January

This set was unfortunately not on display.

    70911 The Penguin Arctic Roller

    305 pieces. Age 8+
    $29.99 (USD) $39.99 (CAD)
    Available in January

This set was unfortunately not on display.

    70912 Arkham Asylum

    1628 pieces. Age 12+
    $149.99 (USD) $179.99 (CAD)
    Available in January

This set was unfortunately not on display.

    70913 Scarecrow Fearful Face-off

Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 28 Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 29 Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 30

    141 pieces. Age 6+
    $14.99 (USD) $16.99 (CAD)
    Available in June

Here we have the first of the summer line of Batman movie sets, and this smallest one includes another part of the power plant. I assume that Scarcrow's helicopter appears somewhere in the movie, but it's not all that memorable, unfortunately.

    70914 Bane Toxic Truck Attack

Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 25 Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 26 Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 27

    366 pieces. Age 8+
    $49.99 (USD) $64.99 (CAD)
    Available in June

I'll go ahead and assume that Bane's truck shows up in the movie - Bane definitely does, and he's great. I don't remember the mini-bat-helicopter though. The truck looks like an okay model, but for $50 it's a pricey way to get your hands on Bane.

    70915 Two-Face Double Demolition

Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 19 Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 20 Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 21 Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 22 Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 23 Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 24

    564 pieces. Age 9+
    $59.99 (USD) $74.99 (CAD)
    Available in June

Another minifig delivery mechanism, this time giving us Billy Dee Williams' Two-Face. I don't remember seeing either of these in the movie, but the excavator is awesome, with its split personality, and I love the reference to Carmine Falcone. The bat-cycle is okay but nothing too special here.

    70916 The Batwing

Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 13 Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 14 Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 15 Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 16 Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 17 Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 18

    1053 pieces. Age 9+
    $89.99 (USD) $109.99 (CAD)
    Available in June

We didn't get a Batwing set for The LEGO Movie, so I'm glad we're getting one here. This flying Batman logo is massive and has a ton of detail and play features. Plus we also get Harley Quinn with her hammer!

    70917 The Ultimate Batmobile

Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 04 Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 05 Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 06 Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 07 Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 08 Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 09 Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 10 Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 11 Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 12

    1456 pieces. Age 10+
    $129.99 (USD) $159.99 (CAD)
    Available in June

This set is just utterly ridiculous. A Batmobile with essentially four vehicles in one, this is the only way to get Alfred in his costume. Still, if you're only going to buy one set from The LEGO Batman Movie, I would say this one is definitely in the running.

    Licensed Merchandise

Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 02 Toy Fair 2017 The LEGO Batman Movie 03

In addition to the sets, LEGO had a display of all the stuff you can load into your Bat Merch Gun to plaster orphans with your branding. From shirts to calendars, to luggage tags to phone cases, expect to see LEGO Batman everywhere for the next few months, at least until The LEGO Ninjago Movie comes out.

    DC Superhero Girls

Toy Fair 2017 DC Superhero Girls 05

    41230 Batgirl Batjet Chase

Toy Fair 2017 DC Superhero Girls 01

    206 pieces. Age 7+
    $24.99 (USD) $34.99 (CAD)
    Available in December 2016

One of the first minidoll-based DC Superhero sets, the Batjet features a net launcher to capture the pesky Kryptomite. It's a cute little vehicle, but nothing too exciting.

41231 Harley Quinn to the Rescue

Toy Fair 2017 DC Superhero Girls 02

    217 pieces. Age 7+
    $29.99 (USD) $39.99 (CAD)
    Available in December 2016

They must really like net launchers in this line. Apart from the launcher with wings that Harley flies, I really like the store front that comes in this set.

    41232 Super Hero High School

Toy Fair 2017 DC Superhero Girls 03

    712 pieces. Age 8+
    $79.99 (USD) $109.99 (CAD)
    Available in December 2016

I don't think I've ever seen a high school like this before, but then again I'm not a superhero. I really like the overall design, and Lena Luthor's vehicle is nice too.

    41233 Lashina Tank

Toy Fair 2017 DC Superhero Girls 04

    145 pieces. Age 7+
    $14.99 (USD) $17.99 (CAD)
    Available in January

The tank is okay and the doghouse is there, but let's talk about Krypto the Superdog. I didn't even know I wanted a LEGO version of Krypto until I saw him, and I bet LEGO knew that would happen too.

    41234 Bumblebee Helicopter

Toy Fair 2017 DC Superhero Girls 06

    142 pieces. Age 7+
    $14.99 (USD) $17.99 (CAD)
    Available in January

This set doesn't really do much for me. Unless you're trying to collect all the figures, I feel like you can pass on this one.

    41235 Wonder Woman Dorm

Toy Fair 2017 DC Superhero Girls 08

    186 pieces. Age 7+
    $19.99 (USD) $24.99 (CAD)
    Available in January

I have to ask - if these characters are in high school why do they need dorm rooms? I guess it's boarding school? Anyway, Wonder Woman's digs seem about what you'd expect for a traditional dorm: there's a bed, a desk with a computer, a wardrobe to hang up your toga in for all those toga parties, and a display stand for your invisible motorcycle. Par for the course!

    41236 Harley Quinn Dorm

Toy Fair 2017 DC Superhero Girls 07

    176 pieces. Age 7+
    $19.99 (USD) $24.99 (CAD)
    Available in August

Harley's dorm is a bit more unusual, featuring a carnival game, a round bed, and a giant hammer. It does feature what may be the first LEGO selfie stick, which is definitely something I'd expect to find in most dorm rooms.

    41237 Batgirl Secret Bunker

Toy Fair 2017 DC Superhero Girls 09 Toy Fair 2017 DC Superhero Girls 10 Toy Fair 2017 DC Superhero Girls 11 Toy Fair 2017 DC Superhero Girls 12

    351 pieces. Age 7+
    $44.99 (USD) $54.99 (CAD)
    Available in August

As you might expect, Batgirl is too cool to live in the dorms, and instead has a secret hideout. The wings on the bat-truck seem a bit much, but I do like the bat-security-camera and the transparent purple parts.

    41238 Lena Luthor Kryptomite Factory

Toy Fair 2017 DC Superhero Girls 13 Toy Fair 2017 DC Superhero Girls 14 Toy Fair 2017 DC Superhero Girls 15 Toy Fair 2017 DC Superhero Girls 16 Toy Fair 2017 DC Superhero Girls 17 Toy Fair 2017 DC Superhero Girls 18 Toy Fair 2017 DC Superhero Girls 19

    432 pieces. Age 7+
    $59.99 (USD) $74.99 (CAD)
    Available in August

Alright, here is what I'm taking away from this set - the Kryptomites are in fact mutated Kryptonian fleas from Kypto the Superdog. The worst part is that that wouldn't be the most ridiculous plot ever in a superhero comic. Other than that, this set looks like it offers a lot of fun playability.

    41239 Eclipso Dark Palace

Toy Fair 2017 DC Superhero Girls 20 Toy Fair 2017 DC Superhero Girls 21 Toy Fair 2017 DC Superhero Girls 22 Toy Fair 2017 DC Superhero Girls 23 Toy Fair 2017 DC Superhero Girls 24 Toy Fair 2017 DC Superhero Girls 25 Toy Fair 2017 DC Superhero Girls 26

    1078 pieces. Age 9+
    $99.99 (USD) $129.99 (CAD)
    Available in August

The main things that stick out to me in this set are the purple Nexo Knights shields and the fairly prolific incorporation of Technic elements, which is unusual in a minidoll set (from my admitedly limited experience). As a result though, there's some fun play features in this set, along with some great details inside the control center. I like the Invisible Jet, but wish it had more transparent parts, or at least different parts from the last jet we got.

    DC Superheroes

Toy Fair 2017 DC Superheroes 01

76068 Mighty Micros: Superman vs. Bizarro

Toy Fair 2017 DC Superheroes 02

    93 pieces. Age 5+
    $9.99 (USD) $12.99 (CAD)
    Available in January

I see what you did there LEGO designers, making Bizarro's vehicle the same as Superman's but backwards. Still though, do either of these two even need a vehicle to beat each other up?

76069 Mighty Micros: Batman vs. Killer Moth

Toy Fair 2017 DC Superheroes 03

    83 pieces. Age 5+
    $9.99 (USD) $12.99 (CAD)
    Available in January

Killer Moth seems like an odd choice of a Batman opponent or a Mighty Micros set, but I do like his buggy vehicle. I also love the 66-style Batman that we get and the little Batcopter.

76070 Mighty Micros: Wonder Woman vs. Doomsday

Toy Fair 2017 DC Superheroes 04

    85 pieces. Age 5+
    $9.99 (USD) $12.99 (CAD)
    Available in January

Okay, I'm not a huge DC fan, but this Doomsday doesn't look like any of the ones I've seen before and seems to have a very caveman theme going on. I like Wonder Woman's Invisible Jet and think they do a good job of capturing it at such a small scale.

    Justice League and Wonder Woman

While the sets weren't on display, there were some blank boxes indicating that we'll be getting at least three sets later this year based on the Wonder Woman and Justice League movies. We'll have to wait and see what they are!

I think this may be the first year that we've had DC Superhero sets without any of them based on something other than a movie or specific subtheme, and I feel like the line as a whole is worse for it. Most of The LEGO Batman Movie sets are great and are definitely the standouts. The Superhero Girls and Mighty Micros don't do a lot for me though. We'll have to see how the Justice League and Wonder Woman sets turn out, but I feel like DC is once again being carried on LEGO Batman's shoulders. Let us know how you feel in the Talkback and be sure to tell us what themes you'd like to see us cover next. And in case you've missed any of our Toy Fair coverage, you can find it all right here!
