Entries in this blog

Oh geez, 11 years

Uh so technically I got this shiny new spinny yesterday but also technically it is still the 18th in some parts of the world so this entry is only mostly late.   However, I have an excuse! Well, excuses, plural. One was packing to head back to uni for my last semester. Another was working on research ahead of classes starting up Tuesday.   Third and most important was The World's End. And if you've seen that movie, you know there is a line in it that I would love to be able to put in a BZP- or L

You take the bad with the good

(Disclaimer: Re-reading this in the morning, this got kind of heavy and ventish. The important bit is - 2013 could have been better, but a happy new year to all.)   So 2013 is almost over, huh. I've been reading people's 2013 posts; a lot of people seem to have had a rough year. Or maybe that's not totally accurate - it seems like a lot of people had a really eventful year, and not always in a good way.   Looking back at 2013, I see a lot of good things that happened - and I see the bad stuff th

Stories and Schooling and Stories

(Disclaimer: Most of the below was written at like, 1 AM, and it got a bit rambly.)   I like writing stories. I dunno if you've noticed, but it's true. I also tend to be busy with school. I dunno if you've noticed, but that's also true. It seems appropriate to blog about the two, since they've been eating up most of my life lately. So that's what I'm doing. Blogging. About stories. And also school. Yeah.   In all seriousness, though - I've got stories to tell. Well, eventually. I've got stories

An important post

I try not to get involved with flare-ups here in the blogs, because I know there's a good chance that if I do I'll wind up with my foot in my mouth and egg on my face. This isn't an exception to that - instead I'd just like to say something important that I hope people already know but I'd like to reiterate given there's been a lot of LGBTQ+ discussion lately.   If you are LGBTQ+, I support and accept you. As someone outside of these groups, I don't have the personal experience that many other

Also hey speaking of Pacific Rim I hear there's this pretty sweet contest about Monsters vs. Titans going on! You should take a look. 'Cause that what all the cool kids are doing.

Smiles and Tears

I haven’t lived even half as long as adults have, but I do have plenty of memories in my backpack My favorite baseball cap, my sneakers with worn-out heels Deep in my pocket is my worn-down guitar pick There were some things sad enough to make tears come out, but you were always by my side I thought of the two of us as just friends the whole time I probably loved you without ever realizing it     We walked while we laughed, played, and got hurt I realized it as we took shortcuts and went in c

Work and Writing and Vidjamagames and Life

It's been about a month since I last posted on this little bloggy thing, and plenty of stuff's been happening, so I figured it was overdue.   So! Work. Microsoft continues to be a pretty sweet gig, if a busy one. And man was E3 awkward around the office. Anyway, I'm usually there from like 9 to 5 or 6 most days, so if you're wondering why I seem to only be around in the evening these days, there's yer answer.   Writing-wise! I put some entries in the Flash Fiction Marathon. You should too!

Back in Washington

Two flights and one last-minute apartment switch later, I'm back in Seattle (well, Redmond) for another summer at Microsoft!   As always, if you're going to be around the area anytime between now and August, drop me a line and I'm always down to hang out.   (Also: No I'm not on or in any way connected to the Xbox team, and I can guarantee whatever XBO joke you're about to make, I've heard it a thousand times. )

RPGs and fics and plans, oh my

So now that this semester is finally drawing to a close, I'm actually starting to have free time again! It's crazy.   Anyway, in the interest of keeping this short and sweet, here's two things I plan to do with said free time: I'm finally going to be able to sit down, finish hashing out this outline for my epic (total aside, but I've always thought 'epic' was a bit flowery a term for 'multi-chapter story', but whatevs), and get down to writing it this summer. It's a follow-up to The Shadow and

Good News Bad News

Good news: Secured a thesis advisor for next fall Things are mostly sorted out for moving back to Seattle in a month Got a letter back from my good friend Cederak Continuing to jot down story ideas, looking forward to sitting down and writing this summer Bad news: Presentation on Monday Debate on Tuesday OS project on Thursday Graphics project on Friday Sick Long story short, my mild work-induced inactivity has grown to complete work-induced inactivity, and will remain that way until

Here comes Justice

New avatar! It's been a good five months or so of Child's Play, but I think it's time to retire it until later this year, when the drive picks up again in earnest.   In the meantime, though, Ace Attorney 5 finally got some more solid details, including the return of Apollo Justice as a playable character. Apollo was the star of the fourth game of the series, and while he kind of got overshadowed by Phoenix, I loved his personality and am really glad to see he'll be playing a major role in the fi

A Piece of Life Advice

If anyone ever asks you if you want to get up at 5 in the morning to drive 150 miles to take on other universities in puzzles, trivia, coding, word association, and (most importantly) Lego building, say yes and don't look back.   I might work at Microsoft, but man I love Google sometimes.

Away-ish 'till Friday

Hey guys, just a heads up that because literally every single one of my professors decided "we'll have everything due just before spring break so people don't need to work over spring break", I will be extremely busy this week. If you need to get in touch with me, I'll try and reply to PMs as quick as I can, but I may be difficult to reach on Skype and won't be around the boards much.   See you all Friday!

Cenotaphs

When it comes to Bionicle, I'm a pretty simple guy. Give me some Toa, a few Matoran for them to protect, and maybe an unexpected mask power, and that'll usually get me pretty far. It's pretty telling that I stopped following the story closely around the time of 2004.   Which makes the fact I enjoyed Cederak's Cenotaphs pretty crazy in my eyes. It's a story from the outlaws' perspective, a story that rather than use the usual heroes and villains and settings opts to build a world out of the blank

Mass Effect 3: Fanservice

Wait, sorry, typo up there. I'm being told the actual title of the DLC is "Mass Effect 3: Citadel". Sorry for the error.   But anyways, since it was getting good reviews and it's the final DLC for Shepard's trilogy, I grabbed Citadel earlier today and played through the main story (there's a good amount of post-story stuff too.)   It's... kind of weird. The whole thing has an air of festivity to it, so if you're looking for some great revelation about the Reapers, this really isn't for you. But

On Reviews

So recently the ECC got the heads-up that some of our recent reviews (particularly charity ones) have been discouraging rather than helpful. Cederak already made a response in the official ECC topic, but I wanted to give my own quick comment on this situation:   In my reviews, I know I can get pretty critical, and getting that dropped on you out of nowhere can be disheartening. But please don't take the review as the be-all-end-all, or as just criticism for criticism's sake. I enjoy helping peop

Super High-School Level Waste Most of a Saturday

This week I made two mistakes:   First, I made the mistake of starting to read the Let's Play of a little game called Dangan Ronpa a few days back, a Japan-only mystery/action game for the PSP.   Second, I made the mistake of getting to about the last third of the game - in other words, precisely when things get real - just before the weekend started.   I legit just spent the better part of five-six hours just reading this game. If my Japanese were a little better, I'd start looking for some way

The Shadow and the Sea: Three of Three

The nice thing about writing a short story that turns into an epic is that you can have a reasonable turn-around time on chapters! Well, a chapter. If you count 'a week' as reasonable. Point is, The Shadow and the Sea is done.   Read it! Critique it! Bop it! Point out canon discrepancies that I sort of just looked the other way on... it!
