Vectorin' Stuff

If you guys want advice on it, only one I can give:

Don't start out on ponies. Too complex a shape.

How did I start?

I traced around this with a simple box in Photoshop to begin with:

After tinkering around a bit, I managed to graduate up a level to design more complex shapes... and logos by extension.

Oh, and want an example of one you see every day now?

So yeah, before you work on ponies, work on simple stuff. You'd be amazed at how much easier it'd be in the long run.

Edit: How I roll in PS CS3:

Meh, I started vectoring with Kanohi shapes. Sadly, I still don't really like how Illustrator handles the drawing process compared to other programs I've used.

Kanohi are pretty simple shapes, I approve of that, Xccj.

Updated the entry with a simple guide on how I do vector in PS.

The problem with me is that I tend to skip the simple stuff because it's too boring. :P

I went straight for drawing Matoran. Sure, they weren't that good, but then my computer crashed and I was forced to redraw everything, which is good because some of the redrawn stuff is the stuff in my banner, which is pretty good.

EDIT: Oh wait you can't see my banner.

But anyway, yeah, just keep doing it and you'll get better. Don't go for ridiculously complex stuff, but also don't go for ridiculously simple stuff.

I have never had the patience to learn vectoring. If I were to learn it, I think one of the main things I'd use it for is designs for minifigures and other decorated LEGO elements. It's possible I'll learn it at my next college, since I'm going into industrial design and that might include some basic elements of a graphic design curriculum. And if not, any design school should have some guides to getting started with vector graphics in the school library.
