Or you could just determine direction using the stars or position of the sun. Who really needs a compass?

Join the club, it was the same way back when I was in scouts and such. In fact, I barely even used a compass for the most part, though I did have one. I think I was just overconfident, and, well, 'stick with the group' was something that was drilled into us. =P And since that was like that, chances were that someone knew where we were going.

my brother was in scouts for a few years - It's actually still the standard issue kinda thing.
