pop always seemed like a strange drink name to me

I mean

I always got this mental image of someone opening a bottle and then having a miniature grandfather crawl out

(as a side note, I thought canadians were supposed to be incredibly polite I thought you only did bad things to moose that walked into your grocery stores or something)

We're really overrated in terms of politeness. Even if we do overuse sorry. =P

But I stand by iBrow; it's always been 'pop' to me; as it's shortened from 'Soda Pop'. You chose one shortened version, we chose the other. =P

The debate between "soda" and "pop" is a colloquial one, and it varies over the entirety of North America. Both are fine. I grew up calling it "pop" and interchange that with "soda" all the time. I'm not sure when "soda" became a part of my lexicon, but I use it as often as I do "pop".

The parts of the continent that call all carbonated beverages "Coke" are wrong, however. They are utterly and completely wrong.

Although, when I ordered a glass of water at a restaurant a few days ago, they somehow seemed to think I wanted some dry white wine.

Alcoholic bartenders aside, seconding Deev here. "Soda" and "pop" are both equal in terms of correctness, but if you're drinking "coke", then how the wordfilter did you manage to obtain liquid drugs?

My mom is addicted to Dr. Pepper.

Politeness I find to be subjective (which is of course my excuse for a lot of these weird threats, like burning eyebrows. I'm not even sure I could do that). I've had members here and everywhere question my calling it "pop" as though I were wrong... so I took this opportunity to gleefully crush any resistance.

I will admit however that when I really think about it, soda kinda makes more sense than pop.

And for me, I know "soda" came in because of college and everyone poking fun of how weird "pop" was. Despite being in the same state even haha. But I still use both around all my friends here.

I use 'soda' and 'coke.' Normally I want a Coke when I say 'coke' though. Pop is just too weird for me.

As a Wisconsinite, it is my duty to bring up the word 'bubbler' in any regional terminology discussion.

Also, 'soda' for life.

I thought pop was just a thing people in old books said. TMYK, I guess.

Also, Dr. Pepper is godly.

I don't care whether you call it soda or pop, if I'm going to drink soda/pop, I'll drink Sprite.

And thus the soda/pop wars started.

Soda is seltzer water, Dr. Pepper is bad-tasting cherry flavored prune juice.
