My opinion on the movies I've seen this year. (2013)

I did something like this last year when I had my blog, so I think its would be cool to make another one for this year. Here is my opinion on the movies that I've seen so far this year.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation I enjoyed this movie a lot. It had good action scenes and some really cool characters. The story wasn't the best, but I kind of knew it wasn't going to be when I went to see it. Though it did have a few surprising moments in it, like the death of Duke at the beginning. Even though it was shown in the trailers, it was still surprising to see a main character from the previous movie killed off so quickly in this one. One would think that he would've survived somehow, but no, he was a goner. And I like that the movie didn't bring him back. It made the stakes even higher for Roadblock and the other survivors.

The only thing I really didn't like about this movie was Cobra Commander's voice. It's just not the voice I see him having. But I don't know a lot about the G.I. Joe mythology, so maybe he has sounded like that before. *shrugs*

Overall, its an enjoyable movie. Not the best, but still good.

Iron Man 3 The first movie from Marvel since the Avengers was released a last year, Iron Man 3 was the summer's first big blockbuster. And boy was it a good one. I know many people thought the story had a few plot holes in it, like why didn't Iron Man use all of his suits when his house was being attacked by the people sent by Killian. And I know a lot of people were not too pleased with the surprising reveal of who the Mandarin really was. But still, the movie had great action scenes. (Iron Man saving all the people who fell out of Air Force One and the final battle are standouts.) Robert Doweny Jr. is just as great playing the role of Tony Stark as he was in the previous Iron Man movies. Guy Pearce was a good villain, with his Extremis powers and all. And the movie showed that the members of the Avengers could still hold their own in their own movies.

The only real nitpick I had with the movie was when Pepper's Extremis powers were taken away. Sure, she could've exploded if she overheated, but I think it would've been cool to see her use her new powers in a future Iron Man movie (if one was made) or the next Avengers. After all, she did use them to stop Killian for good.

And yes, I was a little disappointed by the Mandarin reveal. But the real Mandarin could still appear in a future Iron Man movie. (Again, if one is made.)

Overall, Iron Man 3 is one of my favorite movies I've seen this year, second only to Star Trek Into Darkness. While it does have some plot holes, its far more than makes up for it with its characters and actions scenes.

Star Trek Into Darkness And speaking of Star Trek, this movie is the best I've seen this year. It has everything in it to tell a great story. Interesting characters, funny moments and dialogue, and a few twists and turns in the story to keep one guessing as to what will happen next. Chris Pine, Zachary Quito, and Benedict Cumberbatch in particular all do great work with their characters. The reveal of who Benedict's character true identity is a great scene to watch. In fact, the whole story itself is really great. My favorite part of the whole movie is when the Enterprise is falling towards earth in free fall, and what Kirk has to do to save the ship and crew.

Overall, if this movie is still playing in a movie theater around you, go see it. If you've already seen it, go watch it again. It's my favorite movie I've seen so far this year, and I can't wait to see it again.

Man of Steel This is the Superman movie everyone's been waiting for. With great music and some surprising big stars in it (Kevin Costner, Russel Crowe, Diane Lane), this movie is one of Superman's best since Superman 2. Henry Cavill, the Man of Steel himself, does a great job with title character. The action scenes are some of the best I've seen this year. And unlike Superman's last movie, it actually has some real enemies for Superman to face. Zod and his crew were a great challenge for the Man of Steel.

I did have a few complaints about it though. One was that it wasn't funny enough. Superman did make a few jokes in the movie, but he was really serious through the majority of the film. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but from what I've seen in the previous Superman movies, he was a little more lighthearted. Another was the fight scene between Superman and Zod in Metropolis at the end of the movie. Sure, it was awesome to watch and one of the best actions scene out of any of the movies listed here. But think of all the people killed in that fight! I read on another website that that battle alone would've killed thousands of people and cost the city billions of dollars in damages. It makes one wonder why Superman didn't try to lure Zod out of the city to avoid all that.

Overall, this is a good movie. It's not as good as Iron Man 3 or Star Trek Into Darkness, but it does have some amazing actions that alone are worth the price of a movie ticket.

Monsters University Pixar's first prequel to one of their movies, MU shows what happened to Mike and Sully when they were in college. Though I feel it's kind of 'Mike's story' than 'Mike and Sully's story.' Not that that is a bad thing. This movie basically is Mike's journey to becoming a scarer, with the other characters helping him on that journey. But I still liked these characters a lot.

There was one other thing that I really enjoyed about this movie too. It was that it showed us what the Monster's world looked like. While some of it was shown in Monsters Inc., this movie showed us a lot more of it. Even though it's basically the same as ours, I still think its cool.

Overall, this is a good kids movie that shows that Pixar doesn't need to have a sad story in it like Up or Toy Story 3 to make a good movie.

The Lone Ranger When I went to see this movie, I had the same mind set that I did when I saw G.I Joe: Retaliation: it won't have the best story, but it will have good action scenes. And that would really be my opinion on it. Tonto (Johnny Depp) and The Lone Ranger (Armie Hammer) both do a good job with their roles. The story, while not the best, was still likable. And the Ranger's horse had a few funny moments in the movie. (To quote Tonto from the movie, "That is one strange horse." )

The villain, Butch Cavendish, was a little dark for this movie. He was a cannibal that ate a body part of the people he killed. That was something that was a little extreme IMO considering the tone of the movie.

Overall, I did enjoy the movie. The action scenes on the trains were cool and Depp and Hammer both do a good job with their characters. It's an enjoyable movie if you take it for what it is.

Pacific Rim Ever wonder how a 200 million dollar Power Ranger zoid battle movie would turn out? This is your answer, and it is awesome. This movie is simply giant alien monsters (Kaiju) vs the giant robots (Jaegers) humanity has created to defeat them. The battles between them are great and destructive. If you thought Man of Steel showed you how a city was destroyed, Pacific Rim does it tenfold. The battles destroy dozens of cities. Though to be fair, we're just shown a lot of the destroyed cities. The only city we really see destroyed in Hong Kong.

The characters for the movie aren't the best in the world, but they're still interesting. My favorite is Stacker Pentecost, played by Idris Elba. He does a really good job with his role. Raleigh Becket (play by Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (played by Rinko Kikuchi) are the other main characters, and they do a good job too. But Stacker is the best in this movie.

Overall, if you go to see this movie, it's not because of the characters and their drama. It's to see Jaegers and Kaiji duke it out. And this movie delivers on that front.

I plan on seeing the Wolverine when it comes out later this week. I've read good thing about it, so hopefully it will be good.
