My Opinions on the Movies I've seen so far this Year. (2014)

I've done it for the last two years, so why not do another? Here is my opinion on the movies I've seen so far this year in no particular order.

Note: I do talk about some spoilers in each of these, so I'm putting them in spoiler tags. If you haven't seen the movie in bold yet and don't want it to be ruined for you, it would be best not to open the spoiler tag until you've seen it. You have been warned.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

I'm going to say this right now; this is my favorite movie I've seen this year. Why? Because its shows what Steve Rogers is truly capable of doing, more so than Captain America: The First Avenger and even The Avengers. His actions sequences, particulary at the beginning on the ship, the fight in the elevator, and his taking down of that helicopter when he was escaping from Shield Headquarters has made him one of my favorite Avengers. Then there is the Winter Soldier, aka Bucky Barnes from the first movie, who is also one of my favorite villains now. The cold, dead eye stare he has at fights his opponets is just chilling. He proves that he is more than a match for Cap. Black Widow, and the Falcon.

And then there is the surprise reveal in the movie that will have huge affects on future Marvels movies: Hydra was a part of Shield. It was a surprise to me, and a great one too. (Better than the surprise in Iron Man 3, as I'm sure many have said. :P) Overall, this is a great sequel to the Avengers and a great set up for Age of Ultron. (Especially with one of its post-credit scenes.) Here's hoping Cap. is just as cool in the Avengers sequel as he is here.

The Amazing Spiderman 2

Here's a Spider Man movie that some people didn't really like. Not on Spider Man 3 levels of hate, but they still had issues with it. I, personally, liked it. Andrew Garfield does an amazing (no pun intended) job as Peter Parker and Spider Man. He shines in every scene he is in. His wisecracks also weren't as mean-spirited by they were in The Amazing Spider Man. His relationship with Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) is cute and they both do a great job with their scenes together, though sometimes these scenes do slow the movie down.

The actions scenes with Electro and Green Goblin are wonderfully done. They're exciting and leave you on the edge of your seat. The fight between Spider Man and Electro in Time Square in particular does a great job of showing off Peter's Spider scene and Electro's control of electricity. Another standout scene is the fight between Peter and Harry, aka Green Goblin, in the Clock Tower. There is also the Rhino at the beginning and ending of the movie, but he really only has a cameo appearance. Hopefully he has a bigger role in the next one.

One thing that I really like about this movie is that it sticks to comics when it comes to Gwen's fate. Her death is one of the biggest events that happens to Peter in the comics, and they don't shy away from it in the movie. For Peter, who had already lost his parents and Uncle, while also feeling responsible for Captain Stacy's death, this is another loss for him to go through. We see him mourn her death, and even stop being Spider Man for a while, before coming back to save the day again.

Overall, this is a good movie. I didn't enjoy it as much as 2004's Spider Man 2, but I would say that it is my second favorite Spider Man movie.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

This is also one of my favorite movies this year, second only to The Winer Soldier. It does a great job of balancing all of its characters from the original trilogy and the new one. Some of my favorite action scenes are with the Sentinels in the future. They almost completely overpower the mutants they face in every encounter with them, and said mutants put up a pretty good fight. These mutants, both from past movies and new ones introduced here, are all given great reasons for being in the movie. None of them feel just thrown in, which is an accomplishment with a movie with this many cast members.

But while the future scenes are my favorite, the majority of the movie takes place in the past, with only Wolverine from the original trilogy interacting with the cast from First Class. (Aside from one amazing scene where young Xavier talks to his older self in the future.) Though these scenes may not be as cool as the future ones IMO, they are still really good. Especially the scenes with Quicksilver. He steals every scene hes in, particulary his scene in the kitchen when breaking Magneto out of a jail. That scene alone is worth seeing this movie. Here's hoping the Quicksilver in Age of Ultron will be used just as well in that movie as he is here.

I read somewhere that this movie was a sendoff to the cast of the original trilogy, and I couldn't agree more with that. I won't spoil it here, but fans of the original trilogy will definitely like how this one ends. :)

Overall, I really enjoyed this one. Its my second favorite movie this year and probably my favorite X-Men film of all time.

But it does leave me with one question; How did Wolverine did his metal claws back?

Godzilla

This was a movie people had been waiting for. After the mess that was the 1997 Godzilla, people wanted to see their favorite monster in a movie with a better story. And this one delivers...once Godzilla shows up. The movie goes about a hour in before Godzilla shows up. This might seem like a bad thing, but I recall reading somewhere that this is what they in the older Godzilla movies. By this I mean that they waited to show him in the latter half of the movie. I know some people won't like this, but as for me, I was okay with it. Because when he does show up, he is awesome. B-)

The actions scene between Godzilla and the other creatures are good. They put all of Godzilla's abilities to good use. And they leaves a lot of cities looking like the aftermath of Superman and Zod's final fight in Man of Steel. :P As for the people in this movie, Bryan Cranston hands down gives the best performance here. It's just a shame that he gets killed off pretty early in movie though. Its weird because roughly the first thiry minutes of the movie focus mainly on him and his son, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Then Cranston dies, so the movie is left to Aaron. And unfortunately, he is not the best leading man here. I really wish they would've kept Bryan with him, or maybe just had him go solo throughout the movie instead of Aaron. Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Aaron's wife, does an decent job with her role, but she really isn't given much to do. Ken Watanabe has one of the better performances here with his role, second only to Cranston.

Overall, this is a way better movie than the 1997 version. The performances are not the best, with the exception of Cranston and Watanabe. And I know some people won't like it because it takes a while Godzilla to show up. But I did enjoy this movie for what it was. (And so did everyone I saw it with in the theater. Seriously, they all cheered and applauded at almost every single thing Godzilla did in the movie. When he let out his first roar, when he slammed one of the creatures into a building, when he fired his energy breath for the first time, they all applauded for these events in the movie.) I just hope that in the next one the leading character is a little more believable in their role.

How to Train your Dragon 2

When I first saw How to Train your Dragon on TV, I was surprised by how much I really enjoyed it. I liked the characters, the story, and the sheer beauty of all its flying scenes. So when its sequel came out, I decided to go see it. And its turned out that I enjoyed this one even more.

Taking place five years after the first one, this movies shows Hiccup and his friends all grown up. Hiccup, as it turns out, is now an adventurer as he and his dragon Toothless explore the world around their island, discovering new lands and mapping them as they go. He even has a fire sword now! I like that they made him bolder in this one, showing how he has grown in those five years. He, his Father Stoick, and his mother Valka (who he discovers is alive in this movie) are really the only ones who get any character growth though. The other characters from the first one are here too, and they are given stuff to do. But I feel like they are pushed a little to the side, which is kind of a shame since I like them a lot.

But that doesn't mean Hiccup's story is bad. The scenes where he and Valka, and later Stoick, that are really heartwarming. Especially the scenes with Stoick and Valka. I loved the scene where he discovers that she is alive. The scenes with just Hiccup and Valka before he finds them are also really good.

As for the movie's main plot, it is an interesting one that has some really dark turns. Especially for a kids movie. I did NOT see Stoick's death coming, especially from a mind-controlled Toothless. And the fact that they actually went through with this just makes me like this movie even more. (Even though I didn't want Stoick to die. He was one of my favorite characters in this series. :() The actions scenes are really awesome. The animation looks beautiful. And yes, the flying scenes are just as spectacular here as they were in the first one.

Overall, this is another movie that shows how a sequel is done. It is now my second favorite Dreamworks movie, and I highy recommend it to everyone who enjoyed the first one.

Transformers 4

This one can be summed in one sentence; if you've seen the first three and enjoyed them, you'll probably enjoy this one too.

Though to be honest, this one doesn't have that epic feel Dark of the Moon had. It feels like the start of a new trilogy, which it actually is. Whether that is a good thing or not remains to be seen. But most people probably think that it's not. :P

But there were some things that I liked about this movie. One, I felt like Optimus Prime had more of a central role with the human cast in this one. Where Bumblebee mostly stayed with the Sam and co. in the first three movies, its Prime that actually spends the majority of the time with the human cast. And I like that since he is one of the main Transformers in this franchise. Second, Mark Wahlberg does a good job with his role. So does everyone else in the movie, but I really enjoyed his performance here. Third, I felt like they gave more interesting personalities to the Autobots that were with Optimus in this one. I don't really remember any of their names aside from Bumblebee, but I do know that they at least stood out from each other, maybe even more so than in the first Transformers movie. And lastly, Lockdown. He is hands down the best Transformers to be introduced into this franchise. From killing Rachet to kidnapping Optimus to giving the movie one of its better action scenes, he is just an awesome character all around.

And there is Optimus Prime with a sword riding a fire-breathing Dinobot into battle. How he gets the Dinobots to work with him isn't really that good, plot wise, but its Optimus Prime with a sword riding a fire-breathing Dinobot into battle. Some things in this world don't need to be explain in a movie's plot to be awesome! B-)

What I didn't like was how the man-made Transformers transformed. It's not as cool as how the real ones transform. Then there is Galvatron/Megatron, who is really given nothing to do here. Sure, he leads the man-made Transformers against the Autobots, but aside from that he is basically just there. I would've preferred Lockdown to have been the main villain. And BTW, since Lockdown doesn't aline himself to anyone, there really isn't any true Decepticons in this one unless you include Galvatron as one. That kind of bugs me.

Overall, if you don't like Michael Bay's Transformers franchise, this movie won't change your mind. But if you want to see things blow up for two and a half hours, this is the movie to see.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Here is a movie that does what many people what the Transformers franchise to do, put the humans as secondary characters. And this movie does that. Aside from a quick overview of what happened at the end of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the beginning of this movie is just Caesar and his huge group of apes living in the forest they escaped to in Rise. They see how they hunt, what they do in their village, and talking about how there have been no sightings of humans in a while. This movie takes place ten years after Rise, and one would believe that once they saw the village the apes have built.

But then the main story gets going as Caesar and co. discover a colony of humans still living in San Francisco. Some of the apes, particulary Koba, want to attack the humans, but Caesar is hesitant to because he doesn't want to lose what they have built in the forest. But Koba doesn't listen, insisting on spying on the humans and planning an attack on them. Events slowly escalate until a huge battle inevitably takes place between the humans and apes, and its all largely thanks to Koba.

What I really like about this movie is that its keeps a lot of the apes from Rise in it other than just Caesar. Koba was actually one of the test apes in the first one, and that really helps to show his motivations for his actions in Dawn. He clearly hates humans because of what some scientists did to him, even the good ones. And its that hatred that drives him to challenge Caesar on his belief of the humans, even to the point to try to kill Caesar and frame the humans for it so that they would follow him into battle.

There were other apes from the first movie too, though I don't remember their names.

Andy Serkis, who plays Caesar, does a wonderful job in his role. His motion capture performances are great, and that continues here. Its almost like watching a real ape in this movie. Toby Kebbell, who plays Koba, does just as well, capturing all of his emotions as he goes through the movie.

As for the humans, Gary Oldman does a good job too, though he isn't in a lot of scenes. Jason Clarke, who plays Malcom, and Keri Russell, who plays Ellie, are also really good here and important to the story. But like I said before, the humans are secondary characters in this movie. The movie belongs to the apes, and it benefits from it greatly.

Overall, I really enjoyed this movie. Unlike Rise, where you wanted the apes to win in the end, this one isn't so clear cut. It instead shows that there are good and bad on both sides, and the apes are not so easy to cheer for as they were in Rise. There is spilled blood on both sides, and I really like that this movie shows that.

So, these are my opinions on the movies I've seen so far this year. Here's hoping Guardians of the Galaxy is just as great as it looks. :)

Hang on one moment, are you saying you haven't seen The LEGO Movie? This is something that needs to be addressed!

I... have not seen any of those. Except for How to Train Your Dragon 2, and my sentiments about sidelined supporting characters echo yours. Overall I can't say I was super enthralled with it as a result, but I'm glad you got some enjoyment out of it. It was a good sequel, for sure.
