MNOG II

Brickeens

I've been feeling a bit nostalgic recently, and I now have a strong desire to play the MNOG II. I've never actually completed the game ever - I remember playing it when it was on the BIONICLE website in 2003 and getting virtually nowhere, then the game eventually getting broken, and then around 2011 I downloaded a fixed version of it from BZP and got quite far, except I wound up making some horrible mistake and getting trapped in Ta-Koro without some items necessary to finish the game, and I didn't have the heart to start over.

tl;dr It may be 12 years overdue, but I will BEAT THIS THING.

My only problem is that I'm unable to find a working download. I went to the BIONICLE Online Games Archive, but the two download links don't seem to work for me. Anyone have a working download handy?

I have it! I still haven't beaten it either, but I used the Biomedia Project site to download it. You can play online with a save function if you make an account, but I prefer to play offline.

It heartens me that I'm not the only one who has yet to complete a 12-year old game.

I actually tried the Biomedia site first, but I had issues there as well. When I tried to register I never got the validation email, and when I tried the download versions, Firefox blocked them because it seemed to think the files contained a virus or spyware. I sent an email to the site about it, so maybe I can get the account issue fixed.

I downloaded it a few years back and tried to replay it. And, um... couldn't beat it until I used the cheats in all the Kohlii games. :P

It had decent scenery and lots of characters, but still like the original game better.

The original is definitely far superior, which is a real shame, because the second could really have been just as good.

I've always felt that the fatal flaw was changing the gameplay style from the first-person to third-person view. The original was so immersive and beautiful, and playing it really made you feel like you were in Mata Nui, whereas in the MNOG II you just feel like you're looking at Mata Nui, rather than being a part of it. Not to mention that the way they implemented the new perspective, you have to wait for your character to travel across the screen, making it so much slower and very mind-numbing, only made worse by the game involving loads and loads of travelling for little errands. It really is sad, because the second game looked like a higher-budget production yet they missed the key elements that made the original so powerful.

(Okay that's it I'm done crying about how much I love the MNOG)

Mata Nui Online Game II was definitely a mixed bag. It introduced some great cultural world-building by exploring the careers held by the Matoran of different villages, the principles each of the villages lived by, and how those principles related to individual Kolhii skills and to the identities of the six Rahkshi Makuta chose to attack Mata Nui. At the same time, as you say, it was less immersive, and it also introduced lots of extremely tedious and repetitive gameplay mechanics such as harvesting raw materials, crafting and trading items, Kolhii matches, and grinding for Kolhii skills.

Plus, it was incredibly glitchy and didn't tell nearly such a compelling story as the first, which thrust you into dangerous situations and even let you meet the Toa at several points in your adventure. While I have a great respect for slice-of-life and coming-of-age stories, Mata Nui Online Game II felt largely incidental to the overall Bionicle storyline, rather than helping you feel like you were in the middle of it.

I had no idea there were still people besides search bots stumbling upon the BOGA. Maybe I should shut it down for good at last but I'm too lazy. :P

Some of the files in the BioMedia versions of MNOG, MNOG II and VNOG used to save the game state are recognized by pretty much all scanners (at least all I've tried on my system, which I think is five) as malicious because some of the code they use is also used by a certain malware. This is a known issue but according to the BioMedia folks, it's nothing to worry about. Just add the folder to your antivirus whitelist.

I found BOGA via BS01 - I did wonder whether it was an old page.

I figured the problem would be something like that, but I can't figure out how to bypass it. It appears to be Firefox blocking the download rather than my antivirus software, and I can't see an option in Security to make an exception for downloads.

E: Never mind, got it. Managed to unblock the download and the game appears to be working. Victory!

I stopped maintenance and development of BOGA over three years ago and I think the download links became all defunct sometime in 2013, so yes, it's kind of an old page. :P Anyway, I'm glad you got it to work.
