While I have little interest in Minecraft (I'd thought its popularity had died down majorly over the past two years?), is it wise to have a a server IP Address out in the open like this...?

ToaD has it in his sig, it's for literally any BZP member to use.

As long as it's not being put on other sites, he doesn't mind.

That and I make world backups literally each day and possibly planning a whitelist if stuff happens, so I'm pretty alright with it.

On the bottom left of the launcher, click "edit profile". There should be a section that says "Version Selection". Use the drop-down menu and select 1.9.4. Save the profile, and you're good to go.
