Saw The Force Awakens Again

Toa Smoke Monster

So Star Wars: The Force Awakens appeared on the Starz channels this last weekend, so I decided to watch it after work because I haven't seen it since it was in theaters.

Man, I forgot how great the music is in that movie. All the Star Wars movies have good music IMO, but the music in this one is particularly good.

It was actually cool just to see the movie again in general. I really like it a lot. And I bet the Starz channels will be playing the movie a lot for the next week or two, so I'm probably going to be watching it a lot. :)

Might just be nostalgia, but the music didn't nearly compare to the previous movies. Just felt like John Williams didn't try as hard or didn't find enough inspiration in the movie. The only good cues that i remember were recycled ones from the original trilogy.

Well, he's done a HUGE amount of music in the past for all sorts of things.

He's probably getting really tired.

Rey's theme and the First Order/Kylo Ren theme are both really good. But the rest of the new music didn't quite match up, yeah.

I felt like the theme when the X-Wings arrive on Takodana was also very strong hearing it during the film, but at the same time, not very catchy/memorable compared to old classics like the Imperial March.

I really like the beginning fanfare in March of the resistance but other than that I didn't find a whole lot I really liked. It's not bad, just not as memorable for me I guess.

TFA's score might not be as memorable, but I think it's more solid from a compositional perspective than some of the other scores have been.  The fact that Rey's and Luke's respective Force themes work together in perfect counterpoint is so wonderful and the slight reorchestrations of the finale music just really set the whole thing over the top.

I love almost everything John Williams has done (that I've heard), but this score did nothing for me. Absolutely nothing. The scene with the X-Wings skimming the water was painful because the music was so lifeless. I couldn't even listen to the score on it's own aftward because it was just... bland. My least favorite Williams score since Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and probably my least favorite out of everything I've heard from him. I thought for sure that the music was the one thing about this movie that was guarenteed to be good, but even that fell short for me.

I will admit upfront that I know very little about music. So maybe there's some secret genius in this score that goes over my head. I just found it totally bland.

He recently scored Lincoln. I loved it. Thought it was one of his better scores in a long time. :shrugs:

:kaukau: I loved Lincoln.  I have "The People's House" and "With Malice Towards None" on a special John Williams playlist of mine.

I enjoyed the music for Episove VII and am glad that it had a few memorable themes, but I also liked the music for other movies more.  People criticize George Lucas, but he did a very good job of getting the best music out of John Williams.  Episode I was a musical masterpiece.

I listened to the Lincoln score almost every day at work for a good stretch. It's wonderful.

My preference for prequel music considering the whole movie is Episode III, but "Across the Stars" from Episode II is my favorite piece of music to come out of the saga. I am still holding out hope that we'll get the extended scores for Episodes II and III the way we did for Episode I and the OT.

He's done every star wars movie, and even some of the games.

He might just be tired of Star Wars, or perhaps the directors for The Force Awakens wanted the music to be in a different style, and this was just him trying to compensate.

Well, he is going to do the score for Episode 8, so I don't think he's tired of composing music for Star Wars yet. Or he just really likes the big paycheck he probably gets from doing them. :P
