On Preordering Video Games

~Shockwave~

I don't understand the justifications my friends come up with for continually doing this. I was playing Destiny with my friend and one of his friends and he mentioned that he almost finished paying off his pre-order for GOW4. When I asked him what he would do if that was a bad decision and it was a dud. He nonchalantly said he would trade it in. When I mentioned waiting for reviews, his freind, in a defensive, sort of offended tone stated reviews don't matter and you should decide for yourself weather you like it.

I mean, that's fine, I guess, but I think you should at least wait to see that the game isn't broken.

My friend also defended the AC game that launched a few years ago, stating that it was a new console and they didn't know how to work with it. One would wonder why they where willing to release the game and block reviews until after release. No, they knew exactly what they where doing.

And we wonder why we get so many broken games....

._.

What.

I think I pre-ordered two games ever. And in both cases, they were from developers that I trusted could do a good job. Only one of them ended up being broken, but it was broken in the funny kind of way that you and a friend can just have fun laughing at all the ways you can break the game without it dying.

I've only preordered Pokemon Soulsilver, Black/White, Black2/White2, Monster Hunter Generations and Splatoon and I've enjoyed them all! If there is a game you want to preorder, go ahead and do it.

the only time one should preorder a game is if you know for a fact it's a company you trust, and a series you like

i feel no guilt pre-ordering pokemon games because i know i like them (and sometimes get free stuff from doing so, too), nor would i have felt guilt for pre-ordering xenoblade x because i knew it was a game i was going to love no matter what. of course i didn't have a wii u so i didn't get it, but...yeah

and pre-ordering physical copies, or pre-ordering to get a discount makes sense as well for different reasons, but again, should really just be done if one trusts the series, and trusts they'll enjoy the game. pre-ordering digital games makes...no sense to me. unless you pre-order it a few days before to get a discount/to preload it.

I've only pre-ordered Halo: Reach and The Witcher 3, and both of those proved to be exceedingly good decisions

Edit: Oh, there was also Destiny, but the only reason I wasn't really satisfied with that was that all my friends were playing on PS4...

I've only really been burned by one preorder, and that's my fault, so.

now, granted, i did also get burned a bit with Arkham Knight because it didn't work for so many people I didn't get the extra content until, like, January, but the game worked well for me despite what issues everyone else was having.

There are only three games that I seriously regret preordering and those would be Assassin's Creed 3, Borderlands 2, and Halo 4. While I did complete AC3 around the time I got it, I wasted my money on preordering its season pass. The DLC offerings didn't appeal to me at all and I never touched them. As for BL2 and H4, I didn't complete those games until several years after I had purchased them. In fact, if it weren't for someone carrying me through BL2, I would have never finished it at all.

Fallout 4 and Deus Ex are the only games I have preordered within the last year. F4 could have been better, but it was enjoyable while it lasted and I think I got my money's worth out of the base game. The season pass is another case entirely; even at thirty bucks the content was not worth it at all. DX is one of the best games I've purchased in a long time though.

Edit: Meant to mention that I now only buy games from developers I'm familiar with. I've decided that renting is just a better way of experiencing new games and it doesn't cost me nearly as much if a game ends up being a flop.

I guess I just don't get it then. I have pre-ordered a few games, though mostly to get them on release day through Amazon, and most of them when Nintendo games previously released in other regions.

I've just seen so many broken ports and I feel that forcing a company to show what we get before we give them our money is generally a good thing for the consumer. Tells the company to not release a broken game which they seem generally fine with.

I've never been burned by a preorder. But then, I only really preorder games I'm confident in (by virtue of the series/developer being one I trust to deliver a great experience), and then, only when there's some advantage to doing so (usually a case where there's a physical pre-order bonus or I'm already preordering other items that release on the same day).

I feel the same way about it. I remember a while ago, Nintendo and Microsoft were getting mad at let's players for playing games that had just released, and then shortly after decided to give certain people games in advance so they could stream portions of it.
