The Actual Best Picture 2018

:kaukau: To be honest? Probably Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. I expected good animation. I wasn't expecting something that was great in every conceivable way. It was some real movie magic.

Otherwise, here were some of the other movies that were among the best of the year but were not nominated for Best Picture. A Quiet Place, Crazy Rich Asians, The Mule, Ready Player One, 12 Strong, First Man, The 15:17 to Paris, and Game Night. I highly recommend all of these.

Lemme see...yeah, and now the MCU has its first Oscar wins. Costuming makes sense, and I can't complain in clear conscience because I always root for movies like that to win this ward. Way to go, Academy. Continue to give the Best Costume Design category to superhero and fantasy films. They're literally designed for that category.

...but it kind of makes me mad that it won Best Original Score. And to think, John Williams never won for his Superman score, nor Danny Elfman for Batman, nor Hans Zimmer for any of the Dark Knight movies, just to put that in perspective. C'Mon. You know what had the best score? Of the ones that I've heart, either Into the Spider-Verse or First Man. Though I haven't listened to it, it's highly likely that Mary Poppins Returns had, if nothing else, a great score. Why they don't consistently give this award to musicals escapes me.

I could have sworn I read in the older (2000s until about 20015, maybe) academy rules that musicals weren't eligible due to the heavy use of lyrical music*. Essentially, the academy couldn't be sure about whether members were voting for the movie's score or its songs. Before La La Land the last nomination for a musical was Prince of Egypt despite there being at least a few acclaimed original musicals to come out in that time. And, actually, musicals nominated and winning the category isn't unusual in the awards history. Disney movies, for example, won the award five times and that was just in the late 80s/90s, John Williams' first Oscar was for Fiddler on the Roof, etc.

But I'm finding this memory difficult to corroborate as I can't find older rules. (I do know that Tangled was ineligible and I can't imagine any other reason why that would be.) It could also just be that since musicals tend to be adapted from stage plays the scores aren't truly original, and obviously ineligible.

I have no real opinion on Black Panther's victory in this category.

* I could be confusing this with the existing rule that films with a heavy presence of unoriginal lyrical music are ineligible for the original score category.

"A Quiet Place" is my number two movie of the year (behind "Overlord", but that's probably just because I'm a sucker for a good throwback 80's action movie), I thought "12 Strong" was fine by modern war movie standards, but nothing special.  I've been meaning to watch "Crazy Rich Asians" and "Ready Player One" for a while.  I forget "Game Night" existed, but I was supposed to watch that some time too.
