The Bionicle Mary Sue Litimus Test

Kevin Owens

It's been long coming, and it's not technically finished. But I kinda get the feeling I'll never get around to finishing it, so here it is.

The Bionicle Mary Sue Litimus Test

Some notes before we begin. First, the title is a little bit deceptive. Yes, this is a Mary Sue test, but it's also a cliche test. You will be gain points for being cliche. Now how this test works. The test proposes a simple yes or no question. If you answer yes, you take the designated point count. If you answer no, you go onto the next question. Some questions do not have a designated point value. That's because you should just take that as a sign that you've most likely failed. Also, the orginization and spelling aren't exactly top notch. I apologize.

So without further ado, let's get started.

First of all: Does the character have, and retain throughout the comic, full and complete Author powers? If so, skip this test. What you've got there is an Author character, which isn't what this test is for. Now you just have to decide (and ask the forumers) whether you should use an Author character in your comic... my advice would be no.

Does the character share the Author's/Player's name? (This can be their first name, middle name, or the name they go by in chat or an online forum.) 10 points. Yes, 10 points. This is actually pretty mild; most Mary Sue litmus tests will automatically flunk a character for this. I admit I'm tempted to do the same.)

Does the character have a really cool name, like Hunter, Killer, or Death? Two points (Four points if the name sounds like an AOL user name or a fourteen-year-old wannabe hacker's handle.)

Does the character's name include the name of a weapon? (Darksword, Gunbot, or just being called Scythe) (1 point)

Does the character have more than one name (i.e. a nickname or a pseudonym)? (1 point for each name)

Does the character's name have anything to do with disease? (Plague, Virus, Pox, that sort of thing.) (1 point)

Is the character's name based on an existing character's name? (Mega Tahu, that sort of thing. If the name is based on more than one character, such as "Gopaka", count the points for each character.) (2 points each)

Is the character's name based on a musical term? (1 point)

Does he have a name that sounds like an occidental trying to sound Oriental or American Indian (i.e. "Midnight Tiger")? (1 point)

Did the character choose his name himself?

Does he have a sidekick that meets any of these requirements?

Do you ever, even just to yourself, refer to the character as "me" or "I"? (10 points.)

What does he do? Does he:

Fight Evil (1 point)

Own his own lab? (1 point)

sit around all day for no good reason? (1 point)

travel the world Protoman-style? (1 point)

in order to get revenge on an enemy? (2 points)

work for a BoM of OoMN? (3/4 points respectively)

A pirate? (2 Points)

have an established character (i.e. Taipu) as a student/flunky? (3 points, 5 points if he happens to be a major character such as Makuta)

hang out with characters from wildly different games/cartoons/movies/TV shows?

With more power than before? (+3 points)

0-15 Points

Most likely Not-Sue. Characters at this level could probably take a little spicing up without hurting them any.

16-25

A character can go either way at this point, so Authors should pay attention to ensure that their characters aren't getting too Sue-ish. For an RPG or original fiction character, however, you're probably perfectly fine.

26+

Fanfiction authors beware - Mary's on the loose. There's still a chance you can save this character with some TLC, though. Role-players, you should also strongly consider giving your character a workover.

33+

Fanfiction authors, you might just want to start over. Role-players and original fiction authors, at this point your characters are likely to provoke eye-rolling and exclaimations of "yeah, right!" from your readers. (Well, at least from me.) Immediate workover is probably in order.

38+

Kill it dead. Or make sure you read the instructions properly (some people don't do this, which causes freakishly high scores) and take the test again.

(Disclaimer: I'm not saying that the "perfect character" has to have all of these traits. I'm not even saying that all characters have to have one or more of these traits. I'm just saying that possessing any of these traits moves your character away from being a Sue.)

Does your character look up to and respect some other character, throughout the entire story? (-1 point)

Does your character ever apologize for something, and really mean it? (-1 point)

Does the character ever commit some humorously stupid blunder, such as tripping over his shoelaces or attacking an "enemy tank" that everyone else knows is a boulder, in public? (-1 point)

Do the other characters (ones who are not the character's rivals or eventually shown the error of his ways) laugh at him for it? (-1 point)

Does he laugh at himself for it? (-1 point)

Do YOU laugh at him for it? (-2 points)

Are there any major characters in your story who don't love, despise, or otherwise feel strongly about your character, but just *don't care* about him? (-1 point)

Is your character ever really, seriously wrong about something? (Things that he was deliberately misled about, or things relating to any Dark Past he may possess, don't count; this is for things that the character really should have known better about, if he wasn't so blind/such an cool dude/so biased/whatever.) (-2 points)

Does your character hold any opinions that are strongly different from your own? (Likes music you hate, or vice versa, for instance.) (-1 point)

Any MAJOR opinions, like about religion or politics or philosophy, that you strongly disagree with? (Only counts if he retains those opinions throughout the whole story.) (-2 points)

Is your character ever offstage or in the background for long periods of time, while the other characters do things that have nothing to do with him? (-2 points)

Is your character a pacifist who actually refuses to fight because of this? (If the character ends up fighting anyway disregard this.) (-1 point)

Does your character ever take the time to comfort and console an emotionally distraught other character? (-1 point)

Does your character do this *without* making references to how he (your character, the one taking the test) has faced similar situations in the past? (-2 points)

Is the other character still upset despite your character's best efforts? (-1 point)

Does your character have a normal, loving relationship with his real family? (-1 point)

Is your character ever embarrassed in front of someone he wants to impress? (Either by doing something stupid like spilling his coffee or humorously misspeaking a word, or by something like having a large and conspicuous pimple.) (-1 point)

Let's see, I think altogether that comes to...4.5

Link to comment

And once again my sub-par orginization skills rear their ugly heads. I only meant half-points for the whole save the island/koro stuff. You would have taken full points for the death stuff. I'll fix that now.

Link to comment
Uuh... I totally didn't just stumble upon this and score a 46.5 for my main BZPRPG character or anything... >.>

Character in question and actualy questions answered yes to please. YOu might just be answering the question wrong hence the high score.

Link to comment

I did Tommi, from the BZPRPG.

Does the character share the Author's/Player's name? (This can be their first name, middle name, or the name they go by in chat or an online forum.) 10 points. Yes, 10 points. This is actually pretty mild; most Mary Sue litmus tests will automatically flunk a character for this. I admit I'm tempted to do the same.) 10 points there... XP

What does he do? Does he:

Fight Evil (1 point)

*What* is your character?

A toa with powers beyond the norm (2 points)

What's your character's origin? (Choose all that apply.)

A Matoran turned into a Toa by some other means? (2 points) Other means, but not bizarre enough to qualify for those other options I think.

Does your character use sole kind of weapon to fight? (Multiple weapons are cumulative.)

a sword (3 points; 4 if it's a really big one)

Toa powers and you

Does your Toa have a traditional power? (Fire, Earth, Rock, Wind, Water, Ice) (0 points)

Choosing a Mask

Kakama, Paraki, Mahiki, Komau, Calix, Kandin, Huna, Volitak, Kulasi(3 Points)

MATATU ISN'T ON HERE. D: I put it in the 3 points tier, though.

From here to there. How does your character move about?

Uh, flying isn't on here either. I just gave myself a point. XP

Does your character have a "dark past"? (1 point)

Does the character have amnesia at any point in the story? (1 point) I missed this one the first time around...

Have people close to the character died? (1 point per death) Oh wow, I wonder if I missed this too... well this adds up to 6.

Is the character primarily motivated by revenge for one or more of these deaths? (2 points)

Despite having had an active, strenuous lifestyle that would cause most lifeforms or machines to break down? (2 points)

Has your character ever destroyed a fortress, Koro, or similarly major piece of real estate? (It counts even if your character didn't mean to.) (2 points)

Does your character get away with doing things that other people would get into serious trouble for? (Like killing others, for instance. Even if it was clearly in self-defense, it would normally at least go to trial...) (Three points.)

What other kinds of relationships does your character have with established characters, if any? Add the points up for each character who qualifies.

I don't know him (0 points)

I saw him once (0 points)

an acquaintance (0 points)

a good acquaintance, not quite a friend (0 points)

a friend (1 point)

I'd take a bullet for him (2 points)

he'd take a bullet for me (3 points)

he *has* taken a bullet for me (4 points)

a friendly rivalry (1 point)

a bitter rivalry over a woman (2 points)

I won (1 point)

I killed him (4 points)

This doesn't mean canon characters, right? If so, then it adds up to... well, lets just say there's probably enough points here to flunk my character in itself. RPG's been going for quite a while now.

Take half points if you're a Role Player for this next section.

Does the character save another characters? (1 point.)

The Koro/Wahi? (2 points.)

The island that he inhabits? (3 points.)

Half points.

Acomplishments:

Does the character fight/oppose an army of bad guys?

2 points right?

I think the bulk of it came from character relationships, now that I look at it... I should've written down the questions I answered to the first time, darnit.

EDIT: Tallied it up without doing the character relationships part, it came down to 27, lol.

Link to comment

The whole relationship questions refer to established characters both in bionicle canon and NPCs of the GM. So people like Tahu, Gorast, Taipu, and Zyrul from the Academy. Stuff like that.

Link to comment

Ah, phew. Well in that case, I'd probably only qualify with about two of the main TA characters. That'd keep me in the same zone, though, so not much of a difference...

Anyway, thanks for putting this up. I think I've learned a thing or two from it. =D

Link to comment

No problem. Also remember, this is just on how original your character is in addition to overpowered. So if you start scoring high, just stop yourself and ask, "What is this character bringing to the table in this RPG/Fic/Whatever?" If you can come up with enough to justify your score, then feel free to go ahead. Just don't decieve yourself and you'll be fine.

Link to comment

Alrighty then. I better do this later, when I have time. Seems like an interesting test; looking forward to seeing my score on three of my major characters. Characters in question being Takrah, Loki, and Rolden.

Takrah first:

Does the character have more than one name (i.e. a nickname or a pseudonym)? (1 point for each name)

You have me here. Kain be his other name.

What does he do? Does he:

kill people for money? (3 points) (If your character is a bounty hunter, assassin, Dark Hunter, or mercenary, answer "yes.")

Urm...do I still take points for former merc/assassin status?

*What* is your character?

Something cosmic and/or supernatural (3 points)

Meh. Unique species, which I suppose is cosmic/supernatural.

What's your character's origin? (Choose all that apply.)

From another dimension (1 point, if he is from one of the universe above in the hanging out question, count those points)

This is the best one I could find. He's not from any dimension, but I suppose this is the best one I could find.

I should note that I didn't take any points in the physical change category due to all his changing being mental in nature.

Does your character use some kind of weapon to fight? (Multiple weapons are cumulative.)

a cordak blaster (2 points)

a sword (3 points; 4 if it's a really big one)

Ouch. I took some serious points here.

Toa powers and you

Does your Toa control Light/Shadow (5 points)

Count each element as a separate power. (e.g. Controlling both Gravity and Shadow would net you 7 points. 5 from Shadow and 2 from Gravity)

I should consider myself lucky I'm not eating more points right now. I'm glad I got rid of his shadow/time powers earlier. I suppose I could take points for each of his seperate 'dominant soul' powers, but none of those are elements. Loopholes FTW!

Choosing a Mask

Kulasi(3 Points)

I can take points for this. He has an Avhokki-shaped mask because the Kualsi is ugly.

From here to there. How does your character move about?

Walks? (0 Points)

No points! *dances around in glee

Does your character have a "dark past"? (1 point)

...yes...pasts. Plural.

Does the character feel guilty about something from the past? (Not just forgetting to send a family member a Christmas card, but guilt over major events) (1 point)

He was a serial killer.

Does the character have amnesia at any point in the story? (1 point)

DANGIT! I knew this would come up. I'm just surprised I'm not taking more points.

Have people close to the character died? (1 point per death)

Does it count if one of the characters came back to life soon afterwards? Because I'm not counting that. I take 1 point.

Is your character easily provoked to anger and/or violence? (One point)

Especially after "being made fun of?" (One point.)

Yes and yes. Also, I didn't take points for switching because good and evil are in the eye of the beholder.

Take half points if you're a Role Player for this next section.

Does the character save another characters? (1 point.)

...yes.

At the last minute? (+1 point.)

...so what? I have a flair for the dramatic.

Acomplishments:

Does your character die? (1 point)

Heroically? (2 points)

ARGH! I hate cliches! The worst part: I can't change them because it's set in roleplaying stone!

Are the other characters deeply shaken by your character's death? (1 point)

Shoot!

Does the character return from death or apparent death? (5 points per "ressurrection")

This is where I'm screwed. Three times, though I have an in-canon reason for it...which I will get rid of, in time.

Negative Points Section

(Disclaimer: I'm not saying that the "perfect character" has to have all of these traits. I'm not even saying that all characters have to have one or more of these traits. I'm just saying that possessing any of these traits moves your character away from being a Sue.)

Does your character look up to and respect some other character, throughout the entire story? (-1 point)

Until said character dies. Whoops, did I say that?

Does your character ever apologize for something, and really mean it? (-1 point)

This is forthcoming. In the near future. I'm taking my points now.

Does the character ever commit some humorously stupid blunder, such as tripping over his shoelaces or attacking an "enemy tank" that everyone else knows is a boulder, in public? (-1 point)

I was possessed by Zezak once. Which is pretty humilating.

Do the other characters (ones who are not the character's rivals or eventually shown the error of his ways) laugh at him for it? (-1 point)

I'm pretty sure Zezak was laughing.

Do YOU laugh at him for it? (-2 points)

I lawled afterwards. Was pretty mad at first.

Are there any major characters in your story who don't love, despise, or otherwise feel strongly about your character, but just *don't care* about him? (-1 point)

I'm not taking points for this, because it's not my decision as a roleplayer.

Is your character ever really, seriously wrong about something? (Things that he was deliberately misled about, or things relating to any Dark Past he may possess, don't count; this is for things that the character really should have known better about, if he wasn't so blind/such an cool dude/so biased/whatever.) (-2 points)

He attacked the Kin for no reason. Yay.

Any MAJOR opinions, like about religion or politics or philosophy, that you strongly disagree with? (Only counts if he retains those opinions throughout the whole story.) (-2 points)

I would NEVER attempt suicide. Ever.

Is your character ever offstage or in the background for long periods of time, while the other characters do things that have nothing to do with him? (-2 points)

Oh yes.

Does your character ever take the time to comfort and console an emotionally distraught other character? (-1 point)

Yuki.

Does your character do this *without* making references to how he (your character, the one taking the test) has faced similar situations in the past? (-2 points)

Yes.

Alright. Point tally. Feel free to point out any problems. I scored 30 points, which is a lot better than I assumed. *whew*

Takrah is being reworked, thank God. The biggest problem is changing canon tends to be...confusing.

(-1 point)

Does your character ever apologize for something, and really mean it? (-1 point)

Does the character ever commit some humorously stupid blunder, such as tripping over his shoelaces or attacking an "enemy tank" that everyone else knows is a boulder, in public? (-1 point)

Does he laugh at himself for it? (-1 point)

Is your character ever really, seriously wrong about something? (Things that he was deliberately misled about, or things relating to any Dark Past he may possess, don't count; this is for things that the character really should have known better about, if he wasn't so blind/such an cool dude/so biased/whatever.) (-2 points)

Any MAJOR opinions, like about religion or politics or philosophy, that you strongly disagree with? (Only counts if he retains those opinions throughout the whole story.) (-2 points)

Does your character have a normal, loving relationship with his real family? (-1 point)

Test has been admended. The negative points have been removed. Amnesia section has been expanded. Ninja was listed twice and was removed. The qualifications for a sue have been cranked down a ton. This isn't something that you should be easy to get a passable score on.

A Matoran? - Yes

What's your character's origin? - None of those listed...

Kaukau, Rau, Ruru, Rode(1 Points) - Yes (What's wrong with a powerless Noble Ruru, anyways? He has to wear something...)

Ride a Kikalano or something similar? (1 Point) - Would an ussal count?

Does the character have amnesia at any point in the story? (1 point) - Every Metruan does...

Krahiki is between 1 and 3.

Beat that.

Okay, for the improved test, I'll use Lepidran, my Wasteland character

No points

What does he do? Does he:

Fight Evil (1 point)

Own his own lab? (1 point)

sit around all day for no good reason? (1 point)

travel the world Protoman-style? (1 point)

in order to get revenge on an enemy? (2 points)

work for a BoM of OoMN? (3/4 points respectively)

A pirate? (2 Points)

A Pirates of the Carribean esque pirate who really has a heart of gold? (4 Points)

A Ninja (3 Points)

kill people for money? (3 points) (If your character is a bounty hunter, assassin, Dark Hunter, or mercenary, answer "yes.")

have an established character (i.e. Taipu) as a student/flunky? (3 points, 5 points if he happens to be a major character such as Makuta)

hang out with characters from wildly different games/cartoons/movies/TV shows?

Sonic? (7 points)

Mario? (5 points)

Megaman? (3 points)

I think I gave him a knife or dagger but I'm not sure. So I'll cont it anyway just in case

It means that he's as boring as watching paint dry, like you.

If I were that boring you wouldn't have spent the time reading at least the last sentence of my post and then coming up with a reply. Nor would you have tracked down the picture of me. So clearly I fascinate you, you weirdo

Just for the lulz, I decided to run Nezka through. I merely rated her based on what I did with her, and not what the Cap'n did with her, mainly because I don't know. =P This is what I got.

A Toa (1 point)

22 Points

So she's almost borderline, but not quite. I actually thought she was going to worse, so I'm happy. =P

Also, I should probably update the section for villan stuff. Like instead of saving the Koro, I could give you points for wanting to blow it up or control the island or something like that.
