Awww, you sound like such a sweetheart. Okay, maybe not. You have taught me a valuable life lesson, though, and that is that popularity does not bring happiness. Yeah, I already knew that, but thanks for yet another perspective on it.

I just hope you have people telling you that you're their best friend that you really do like.

You're right, I do. I have some pretty amazing "best friends" : )

I've stuck to the same best friend for 9 years, and I stick close to only a select few to prevent usage of myself by others. I've had many people trick me into thinking they're my friend and not just a user of me, and as nice a person I am (I hope I am), I know when to draw the line and cut people out of my life. It's a tough thing to do but it haas to be done to prevent pain.

(I had recent experience with almost losing my other best friend so it's fresh in my memory, not fun stuff)

Sadly, you usually have to be absolutely cruel. I've had the misfortune of meeting several people (probably around 4 or 5) I didn't like who kept trying to be my friend. These people also didn't understand when I told them straight out, or when I then told them to go away, or when I then started ignoring them, or when I then started making fun of them. They usually avoid me at all times now thankfully, however there is this one guy who keeps coming back occasionally.

However, you should be somewhat thankful these people are telling you you're their best friend, it shows you're a nice person, and uh... friendly, yeah! XP
