also I recognize 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 18, 19, 26, 27, and 30.

I've only ever played the two GTA games.

I don't think these are in order.

Putting a character from a game that came out earlier this year as someone who defined a decade is weird (guy from Red Dead Redemption).

You'd think Morrigan would be more defining than Loghain (Aho though he was).

How in the world do you not recognize these names. Maybe the characters if you haven't played the videogames you don't know the character's names, but every single videogame up there except for perhaps Braid, Psychonauts, and Beyond Good and Evil were major blockbuster games. Heck, Bioshock and KOTOR were games of the year when they came out. Mass Effect. Red Dead Redemption, Uncharted, Shadow of the Colossus, and Dragon Age have also won tons of awards.

BRO not all of us are into video games!

Yeah, but you would assume that people coming in and complaining about not recognizing any of the games/characters would have at least looked at a gaming magazing or gone to a gamestop or whatever within the past few years.

OR

Maybe we just don't really care and as such it skips our memory. :|

Seriously dude, just going to Gamestop and seeing a poster for Mass Effect II doesn't mean you know all the character's names or anything.

I didn't know a store called 'Gamestop' existed until my girlfriend mentioned it last year. I've never been inside one (although I've since noticed one at the local mall). And there are gaming magazines? I had no idea (what would the articles be about? Just reviews of new games or something?)...

Video games honestly aren't as mainstream as some believe. Unless you have an actually interest in the medium, you're probably not going to be very familiar with any of the characters and stories from it. It's not something that enters the public pop-culture lexicon easily, like references to cinema. And no, the internet does not count; popularity on the internet does not reflect reality.

I am quite into video games, actually, and I read several gaming magazines and regularly browse many gaming websites. And I am still clueless as to the identities of many of these characters. I think the people who made this list just picked their favourite characters, because there are many chart-topping, award-winning games whose chatacters are not listed here.

And because Glados is listed as #1.
