The Whole "wet Mane Ponies" Thing

Soooo... apparently some weird rule is now in place against wet mane pony pictures. Now, I can put up with this just as well as I put up with other BZP rules that inconvenience me. Better, in fact, because it doesn't really affect me whether other people post such pics or not.   But I do have to say I'm genuinely confused. Does people making joking comments about a non-human cartoon character being "sexy" really drift that close to breaking BZPower rules? If a lot of people posted comments about

The serials and their function

I was just reflecting on which BIONICLE books I liked most and least, and I got to thinking about something. While the serials are often heavily criticized for being bloated, aimless, and an obstacle to new BIONICLE fans, I'm starting to get a sense of why they were introduced in the first place (other than as a free online method of story dispersal).   The books in the year 2006 were among my least favorite. At many points felt like the characters were rushing from one battle or crisis to anoth

The Sand Stalker...

...is actually awesome somehow.   I just built an recolored one (I don't have Fero and Skirmix), and it works splendidly as a camel-like creature I imagine it would be even better with correctly-colored pieces. No gaping holes in its construction, and a surprisingly unified look.   There's half a Thornax Launcher sticking out of its mouth, and I can't figure out what it's supposed to be. A lolling or flicking tongue, perhaps? A bit like that which would be attached to a bridle? An oddly-posit

The Pohatu That Might Have Been...

I discovered today that it's really easy to make a clean edit from the posters in the "Downloads" section on BIONICLE.com. I discovered it rather fortuitously, having copypasted some hi-res Mistika and Phantoka pics from there with the intention of making some generally simple edits. You know, a quick negative and then a complete hue reversal, which in essence kept the colors the same but swapped the light and dark areas of the original image.   The point to this, of course, was to sort of get

The Horrible Halloween

Dear Readers, Seeing as its been 11 days since that special day we call Halloween, it's high time I give my unfortunate readers an update on the Halloween festivities.   My family's celebrations were premature, a word which here means "occurring earlier than is normal for such occasions." We went to a Halloween party at a friend's house on the 29th, and to celebrate the release of Book the 13th, Lyichir and I dressed up as two prominent characters from the novel, Olaf and Ishmael. You would pr

The Hero Factory Building System is Amazing and Here's Why

Before we proceed, let me say that this model is NOT MINE. It was created by LEGO Group designers (EDIT: The designer was Christoffer Raundahl, one of the inventors of this building system whose BIONICLE design credits include the original Tahu and Kopaka sets), though it is most likely a MOC and not a set design (if it is an unannounced set design, though, you are free to celebrate at your leisure). The painted variant was detailed by Søren Westborg, a Danish artist who seems to specialize in p

Tarix Review Rebuttal

Well, I wrote this review rebuttal shortly after the Zesk Review Rebuttal revealed that this was now a possibility on BZPower. I find it's a wonderful medium in which to express one's opinions of sets. Sadly, although I e-mailed it to news@bzpower.com a few days after writing it, it was not published prior to the one-month cutoff date. Therefore, I have opted to post it here instead. I hope people of all opinions find they learn more about the set's flaws and surprises here.   This rebuttal is

Takanuva 2008 Review

Sorry, still pictureless. Forgot to get pics of the building process, and I'm sure you can find plenty of poses and comparison pics to smaller Toa, as well as pics from different angles, on Brickshelf. In fact, building-process pics should be easily accessible thanks to LEGO's highly convenient online building instructions. Anyway, on to the review!   Presentation From the design of the box to the instruction manual, these are the first things you see before building the set.   The front of

Tahu Nuva Phantoka

Well, I've decided I will design a revamp of Tahu Nuva Mistika. About time I tried my hand at setlike revamps. However, since I want to be able to pretend this is official for the sake of my drawings, this revamp will not be Tahu Nuva Mistika, but Tahu Nuva Phantoka. Here is a list of what I have decided to do so far: Same feet as the set. Tahu Nuva Mistika is my favorite of the Nuva Mistika on account of his abundant similarities to Kopaka, a trait which has been standard for Tahu both in sto

Tahu Moc Wip

Surel Contest

I dislike making entries telling people specifically to vote one way or another-- while I sometimes ask people to vote for my entries, I think it's unfair for anyone to vote for anything without at least looking at the other options. However, the Surel contest final polls are making me anxious, and so I feel it may be appropriate to break from tradition.   Let me express that I am very much in support of Entry 2. It actually looks like a BIONICLE character who has been injured badly and forced

Sunday February 12, 2012

This arrived in the mail today. I will be representing BIONICLEsector01 and its sister site HEROsector01, to which I will be reporting.   I tried to see if I could obtain admission to the main ToyFair rather than just the LEGO Collectors Preview, but I don't have near enough press credentials. I suppose all those bronies BZPers out there will have to find other sources for their non-LEGO toy news.   —

Summer Set Thoughts, Part 3

Anyone remember Part 1 and Part II? Well, I figured since I haven't lately done a compilation of my feelings on the sets, and since better pics have shown up of so many, I might as well present one last statement before I actually obtain the sets.   Wrapping It Up There is only one new set to critique here, and that is of course the much-discussed large boxed set that goes by "Toa Mata Nui". He will be hard to critique, since he did not appear at ToyFair and thus has only been seen from one an

Summer Set Thoughts, Part 2

First, if you haven't checked out Part 1, go ahead and do that. I'd love to hear where my first thoughts agree with or differ with your own.   Bara Magna Vehicles  The vehicle sets for 2009 prove impressively unique. Some of them have flaws, but all are nevertheless amazingly creative. This year's vehicles vary from most we encountered last year in that these tend to be land vehicles. As such, there are plenty of treads and wheels to go around. Overall there are some flaws, but the sets are n

Summer Set Thoughts, Part 1

Glatorian Legends The Glatorian Legends are an interesting bunch. Certainly they can be regarded as more "generic" than the original Glatorians, but they manage to use innovative new weapons, masks, and combinations of old pieces to establish overall unique looks. I'll address them one at a time. Ackar Ackar is somewhat disappointing with his almost exact Toa Inika build. The Mahri blades which act as his shoulder armor are a neat idea, but sadly one that does not match any of his other arm

Summer Nuva Mask Review

Well, while BZP was down I got the last of the summer Nuva masks.   No, seriously.   Alright, it wasn't in the Nuva set. But still, Solek does just as good.   Pic 1: Hau Nuva. Comes equipped with standard accursed double-grooves which thanks to Mask of Light replaced the traditional triple-grooves on Lhikan's Hau. But hey, it's the Hau Nuva, so I'll let it slide. Drawing the new and old Tahu Nuva has been fun thanks to this mask.   Pic 2: Kaukau Nuva. Most obvious of the three. Between the

Stumbling through songwriting

I was just catching up on BZPower blogs and came across Windrider's recent blog entry where she came out as transgender. At some point after I finished reading it I felt inspired, so I started typing on my phone until I had some decent-sounding song lyrics. Unfortunately, I neither write nor play music, so the chance of turning this into a finished song is extremely uncertain. But I figured I'd share them here.   The song is actually BIONICLE-related, written from the perspective of Takanuva aft

Stars Thoughts

Now that we've seen finalized images of all the BIONICLE Stars, it's opinion time.   First, a quick overview of the Stars. They're a line of canister sets, although they are sized more like the small sets of the past two years. I don't mind this, partly because it gives characters like Tahu more classic proportions, and partly because I don't really see what difference it makes.   The Stars contain exactly six new molds. It's considerably fewer than previous canister set lines, but about the s

Spring Break Plans

Taking the bus down from Boston to D.C., then the Metro to Alexandria. Gonna be hanging out with the brony group from my hometown I recently learned of. It's gonna be tight.   Oh, I'm sorry, is my outdated slang bothering you? Let me reconfigure.   It's gonna be crucial.

Speculation_fail_

I have a lot of respect for BZP's news staff, especially when they make publicly known a huge influx of movie info, but in all honesty... » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «"Metus's Revenge" really doesn't make me think that he's the traitor. Now, don't get this wrong, he is still a candidate for the traitor-- after all, he seems to be the master of wheeling and dealing, and is in my eyes quite capable of getting Tuma to eat out of his hand as the traitor did in Empire of the Sk

Special Edition Jetrax T6 Review

Thanks to money obtained from a summer job, I was able to provide my brother Lyichir with a very special Christmas present: The Special Edition Jetrax T6! He has given me permission to review it here in my blog.   Presentation From the design of the box to the instruction manual, these are the first things you see before building the set.   Jetrax's box is, like Mazeka's, very similar to that of the Rockoh T3. If you want an in-depth look at the motifs of that box, visit my Rockoh T3 review

Some thoughts on the TTV Podcast

Let me make this clear: I do not hate TTV. I do not enjoy the TTV podcast (mostly just personal preference — I do not enjoy getting my news in video form when given the choice), but I respect them for what they do — and I reserve the right to be disappointed when they do it badly.  If a BZPower set review made similar mistakes, praising or criticizing features that do not exist when the set is built correctly, then I would want them to be held accountable as well. In fact, I have vocally critici
