Christmas Updates

All right, I just realized a few minutes ago that BZP was back. Which is good, but at the same time which lends me a lot of catching up to do (apparently, the holiday season gives many people free time for posting). Other sites, too, have come back at this inopportune time, lending me extra grief as I desperately try to catch up. And schoolwork doesn't even factor into those needs, despite that I have a lot to work on over break.   For starters, I was ill-prepared for Christmas this year. I fai

What Not To Ask A Set Designer

Do NOT ask why we have fewer new pieces than we used to, because we don't. Toa Mata had 21 new parts, Bohrok had 24 (and only if you count every type of Krana, which not even a full set of six Bohrok will get you), Bohrok Kal had... 6, Rahkshi had 27, Toa Metru had 22 (in the US), Vahki had 12 (again, in the US), Toa Hordika had 23 (in the US), Visorak had 15 (you know the drill), Piraka had 22, Toa Inika had 24, Barraki had 25, Toa Mahri had 22, Phantoka had 24, and Mistika had 22. Clearly peop

Recent Thoughts

I've recently been compiling piece lists for Phantoka versions of Tahu's half of the team. While I can't MOC these or even perfectly envision them until the Mistika come out along with the parts I need, I've managed to make some crucial decisions based on such mundane statistics as number of new parts, number of parts in new colors, and overall number of parts.   For the record, Tahu and Gali so far have 54 parts inventoried, including a wicked sword for Tahu that doesn't call for a new part (b

On Bionicle Language

It doesn't make sense.   It's not supposed to make sense.   Names are usually chosen arbitrarily from words that sound like an English word with a related meaning and do not exist as brand names for any company, nor as sensitive words to any culture.   The Official BIONICLE Languages Topic is perhaps one of the largest breeding grounds of misinformation on BZP. Today and a few times before I have had to explaint to people that the BIONICLE language, if it does make sense, perhaps only does so

Verification Finally Delivered!

I got my premier membership in the same evening in which I applied! I didn't know that could happen! What better way to celebrate than with a BLOG?!   First person to figure out where I got my blog title gets a brownie point.   With all due respect, Aanchir, Rachira of Time   P.S. I'm not totally obsessed with volunteership, I just couldn't think of a better name for my blog.

About Wayside

I really need to see that show. I have yet to see ONE legitimate complaint; as of yet all which I've seen treat the illustrations as "immaculate." My opinion is that if the author doesn't demand that a depiction of their book follow certain criteria, it's open for interpretation. And to my knowledge, Wayside falls under that category.   Is it important what color a character's hair is if it does not affect the plot? What about skin? Eyes? I fail to see how any of these things are important, but

Brain Attack Musings

I was just thinking about the Hero Factory Brain Attack sets and was struck by something unusual. Obviously, from a story perspective, it's obvious that the theme for the year was a combination alien invasion/zombie apocalypse. But has anybody noticed that the sets almost had more of a historical fantasy flavor to them?   Think about it — the heroes had helmets with visors that folded down over their eyes, and segmented metallic armor. Rocka, Furno, and Stormer all carried a traditional sword an

On Fleas and Flick Missiles

I was just in my room playing with Breez Flea Machine, a set that I got at the LEGO store last week. It's been on my wish list since before it came out, because I really love its design. The LEGO Group really showed great creativity with this year's Invasion from Below sets and I think it totally paid off. Generally the set meets all of my expectations.   Non-traditional design? Check. Its tripod build and heavy use of Technic really help it stand out from previous Hero Factory sets. It's also h

Art/Life Updates - 9/17/12

Back from a brief hiatus as I transitioned to life at my new college! I am currently at Wentworth Institute of Technology studying Industrial Design.   The first part of my life and art updates is best summed up with this post from the Official My Little Pony topic:     Now, my next challenge on Illustrator was to see if I could vectorize and color some existing lineart of mine. The only piece I was able to successfully color with the tools I have now was my picture of Kai and his family from LE

Inika/piraka Torsos: A Treatise

Here. I spent good time on this; please read it.   EDIT: Since it has become clear from this and issues in my personal life that I'm just a horrible, insufferable person who is rude and heartless to people without even realizing it, I'm locking this entry. Yes, locking a discussion that hurts you is a tactic which is pathetic for an avid debater to use. But I ought to have nothing but shame for whatever so-called "talent" I might have with words. There is nothing more to say but that.

Bionicle Height Resource Center (last Update: 7/4/08)

Anyone who read my last entry on Mistika height might get the impression that I have dabbled before in BIONICLE heights for set and story, and so I have. In fact, a few of my recent PMs to Greg have dealt with the height of certain characters in story. But anyway, I've managed to get a decent word document together for my own reference when dealing with issues of height, and decided today while updating it with tentative information on the canon height of Takanuva that it was worth posting here,

70162 Infearno Interception Review

A little over a month ago, Tim Johnson (owner of one of my favorite LEGO blogs, The New Elementary) approached me asking if I'd like to review some sets for his site. I jumped at the opportunity, and today I can announce that my first review for TNE is now live! Click here to take a look at this amazing set and the many interesting LEGO elements it offers!   I am very proud of how this review turned out. I am already working on another review for the site, and will share it here when it is compl

Too Bad.

It appears I won't be entering this BBC contest either. Ever since Dad cleaned the basement (that's where we keep all of our LEGO stuff), the box where we keep Bionicle armor has been missing. Of course, I have plenty in my room, but not enough to make the MOC I was intending to make, a Toa Metru Kaita. I've made one before that was pretty good, so I was confident in my ability to make another, but as it is, it seems very unlikely that it will be ready for this contest.   This is the third offi

Self-portrait

Unlike some authors whose faces are never seen, I have taken the liberty of showing my real appearance to the public, despite the dangers that such a decision may pose to my life or my organization. However, I am confidsent that anyone who has remained loyal to this blog is either a volunteer or an innocent, chronically depressed bystander. If you are a villain, I advise you to read no further, since the picture in the following link is not that of the elusive Aanchir, but rather that of a harml

How Unfortunate.

Why do people seem to avoid my topics nowadays? Noone's posted in my last two blog entries, and 1/3 of the comments I do have were made by yours truly. My entries may be unpleasant, but they're not dangerous.   My art topic, A Perfect Couple, has been dramatically updated and few people seem to care. I mean, there are still AC12 entries on the FIRST PAGE! I'm only on the second and I still get ignored!   While I'm at it, here's a link to my latest topic, Whekkies! Try to post on it before it d

Mata Nui Location Name Origins

I recently have been spending a lot of time researching the origins of 2001-2003 BIONICLE names. One area I have nearly completed my research on is that of locations. Bear in mind that these are mostly 2001 names, so they are derived from various Polynesian sources. I intend no offense to those cultures where the words are still in-use, and do not claim to have confirmation that the cited languages are the actual sources for the names (if I remember correctly, many names were drawn by LEGO from

Lariska Looks Nothing Like Roodaka

Well, perhaps not nothing like her, but enough that it is blatantly obvious that Lariska is not a Vortixx.   Evidence is present in "Birth of a Dark Hunter," the short story featured at the end of the first BIONICLE encyclopedia. For people who never bought the BIONICLE encyclopedia, have lost theirs, or were intelligent enough to wait for a later edition, the story can be found here. Of course, there is one paragraph that serves as the least debatable evidence.   Clearly, unless Vortixx hav

About My Turtwig

Heh. A funny story...   When I got my first Pokemon on Diamond (shortly after the game came out), I chose the Grass element starter, Turtwig, since I love Ground element (Swampert and Torterra FTW!) and had never had a Grass element starter. Since it was a grass type, I gave it a suitable nickname, as I have with all my starters since Sapphire version. I named him Forrest.   Later, I got around to checking his stats, so I could see about drawing him (I always design personalities for my party

Surel Contest

I dislike making entries telling people specifically to vote one way or another-- while I sometimes ask people to vote for my entries, I think it's unfair for anyone to vote for anything without at least looking at the other options. However, the Surel contest final polls are making me anxious, and so I feel it may be appropriate to break from tradition.   Let me express that I am very much in support of Entry 2. It actually looks like a BIONICLE character who has been injured badly and forced

Phantoka? Why Yes!

Just got back from a Drama field trip to see Dracula at VCU.   Awesomeness.   And now, if you'll excuse me, I've got some Phantoka to be drawing. See you next time.   *credits roll and the theme to "Bill Nye the Science Guy starts playing*   All right, seriously. This will be the first time I've ever drawn a Makuta, and I need ideas. I want them to look humanoid, given their resemblances to Matoran, but at the same time distinctly "not human," even demonic. They will be drawn in my new style

Takanuva 2008 Review

Sorry, still pictureless. Forgot to get pics of the building process, and I'm sure you can find plenty of poses and comparison pics to smaller Toa, as well as pics from different angles, on Brickshelf. In fact, building-process pics should be easily accessible thanks to LEGO's highly convenient online building instructions. Anyway, on to the review!   Presentation From the design of the box to the instruction manual, these are the first things you see before building the set.   The front of

About The New Kopaka.

Yes, his mask maintains a major similarity to the original Akaku Nuva. I both love it and hate it for this. I love it because I no longer have to worry about being biased and thinking "it's OK being different" on account of the reason I hate this-- I hated the original Akaku Nuva.   Anyway, the similarity is so simple it doesn't even need an edit. What does this mean? Yes, it's one of those abominable structural similarities. The ones which are useless on my drawings, the ones which render the

Eye Color Observations

There are two colors used for the eyes of most 2006-2008 sets. Many have begun to think these eye colors are tiresome. Their official LEGO names are Transparent Neon Green and Transparent Neon Orange, and they are unique in having the distinctive addition of "Neon" in their names. Why is this?   First, let's look at a peculiarity of the Shop-At-Home catalog advertisements for the Av-Matoran and Shadow Matoran sets. The page screams, "Av-Matoran have yellow eyes...!" and "Shadow Matoran have red

On The Aqua Blaster Blade

When I first began to see the entries for the Aqua Blaster Blade contest, I was very concerned. Many were cluttered, lacking stylistic consistency between their parts. Many used too many non-BIONICLE components such as Technic beams, rendering them awkward as Toa tools. Many were enormous and unwieldy, which makes it perfectly clear that at least half of the entrants must have seen this as a second chance after losing the Xian Weapons contest, completely ignoring the purpose of the contest to gi
