Certavus

Still need to get a more reasonable set of categories for my blog. How long ago was it that these ones made sense? If ever?   Anyway, in regard to the title...   Gallery   Voting has begun! You can find my Certavus as Entry 2 in Poll 6!   As always, I encourage people who choose to vote in the contest to make the best decisions they can-- if you think another entry in my or another poll is the best, by all means vote based on your own choice. Of course I wish my own entry good luck, but I

2010

I see a lot of discussion these days about whether 2010 is the last year of BIONICLE. Figured it's about time that I organized my feelings on the matter in a blog entry.   For starters, I do not care if BIONICLE ends in 2010. Why would I say this, when I've been such an approving fan of BIONICLE's story and set developments? The short answer is that BIONICLE has lived a good life, and is at a point where an end is possible.   The long answer is a lot more complex, and based in part on my obser

Brickfair and Other Plans

Welp, I'm pretty close to prepared for Brickfair. Got my clothes, MOCs, name badge, and art all packed up.   MOCs I'm exhibiting this year include Caitlyn Gauss XL, Delwyn Buckler, Blacktron Vivisector, Kit Martello, Hero Factory Canine Buddy, Rise of the Dread Colossus (submarine only — I had to borrow some of the Dread Colossus's tentacles for Delwyn's hair, so he's out of commission), and My Little Tahu. I think Delwyn Buckler and Caitlyn Gauss XL will probably be the most popular of those se

Sebald Code For Dummies

Hello. If you are reading this then you are not only in a large minority intent on self-inflicted misery, but you may also be a reader of my epic, Frost Rising. Regardless, you are probably interested in finding the answer to one question: What is Sebald Code? Let's begin with a little history. Sebald code is named for its inventor, a volunteer named Dr. Gustav Sebald. Dr. Sebald was a reputed filmmaker who is well known for his production of movies such as Ghosts in the Desert, Goblins in the

Artemis Fowl: The Last Guardian

Most of this post shamelessly copypasted from a post of mine on another site, with minor adjustments   I just happened to stroll to a downtown bookstore during my lunch break on Monday, and found the newest Artemis Fowl book (Artemis Fowl: The Last Guardian). I was quite surprised as I hadn't realized it was out yet, but apparently it came out last week.   Having read it, I think it was a phenomenal capstone to the series, and am glad Eoin Colfer didn't take the "final book in the series" thing

Fero=retro

Recently (or really not-so-recently, but whatevs) someone discovered that the German bio for Gresh on BIONICLE.com called his weapon a "Jungle Shield" (actually something more like Dschungelshield, but we all know what it means translated). The BS01 Wiki rejoiced to have an actual name for this weapon to replace the article's previous name, "Razor-Edge Shield".   Out of curiosity I decided today to run some German LEGO S@H and BIONICLE.com product descriptions through Google Translate. And when

Special Edition Jetrax T6 Review

Thanks to money obtained from a summer job, I was able to provide my brother Lyichir with a very special Christmas present: The Special Edition Jetrax T6! He has given me permission to review it here in my blog.   Presentation From the design of the box to the instruction manual, these are the first things you see before building the set.   Jetrax's box is, like Mazeka's, very similar to that of the Rockoh T3. If you want an in-depth look at the motifs of that box, visit my Rockoh T3 review

The Hero Factory Building System is Amazing and Here's Why

Before we proceed, let me say that this model is NOT MINE. It was created by LEGO Group designers (EDIT: The designer was Christoffer Raundahl, one of the inventors of this building system whose BIONICLE design credits include the original Tahu and Kopaka sets), though it is most likely a MOC and not a set design (if it is an unannounced set design, though, you are free to celebrate at your leisure). The painted variant was detailed by Søren Westborg, a Danish artist who seems to specialize in p

Joke Over.

Some things are either too important or too dangerous to give up, and V.F.D. is sadly one of them. The Sugar Bowl's back, with as much misery and overall danger as before.   With all due respect, Aanchir: Rachira of Time

On Clonism

Dear Reader,   The ethics of cloning is an issue that comes up often these days, and the cloning of BIONICLE sets is no exception. Whether you are an MOCist, an artist, or a stockholder, you have no doubt noticed a significant change in BIONICLE since the phasing out of clone sets. In this post, however, you will find a tedious degree of math and basic counting which serves to confirm that, while it may seem that the sets for 2006-2008 have been repetitive, many things have not changed. From: Unpopular Opinions?

Actually, in 2002 (according to TLG's Annual Report from that year, page 23), BIONICLE was TLG's top-selling product line, immediately ahead of LEGO Harry Potter. LEGO Explore (the rebranding of LEGO Duplo at that time) was TLG's third-highest-selling product, and LEGO Star Wars was only their fourth-highest-selling product. The 2001 annual report doesn't give an organized list of top-selling product lines, but it does treat BIONICLE, Harry Potter, and Bob the Builder as some of the lines that w

Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes

Believe it or not, I am a fan of things that are not miserable, depressing, or V.F.D. related. Here I am not speaking of Bionicle, even though anyone who knows me should know that that is my primary creative outlet. I am here speaking of Pokémon.   On July the First I acquired a copy of Pokémon Diamond, whereas Lyi picked up Pokémon Pearl (I love that they come out with these in sets of three-- It makes it easy to keep my two brothers and me satisfied). From now on you may see me post some Poké

Brickfair Highlights

I am way behind writing up my Brickfair recap, so I'm going to just go over some of the highlights. Shortly after I arrived, I learned that Delwyn Buckler got featured on the back cover of the event program! Awesome! Here's my haul from vendors and yard sales. It includes a lot of cool stuff, including a bunch of useful Hero Factory parts, six LEGO Friends mini-dolls for customizing, and a UV light for my MOC during the World of Lights event on Friday. At the live auction on Friday, Nukaya's B

Hero Factory 2010 and Beyond

You know, I fully understand that there are a lot of people who will never like Hero Factory. And I respect that. Tastes differ, after all.   But something I'll never understand is how often I hear claims about 2010 Hero Factory sets being better than subsequent series. It seems like selective memory at its finest.   Let me refresh your memory: in 2010, there were 15 sets total. Six of those were heroes like this one or this one. Let's run through the features, shall we? Two-piece limbs. The bea

LEGO Mini-Dolls

Is it bad that I think the ‪LEGO Elves are a lot cuter and more interesting as mini-dolls than they would ever have been as classic minifigs? It seems like for a lot of people, the classic minifigure is sacred and untouchable. I disagree. It has some real, meaningful disadvantages. Mini-dolls aren't perfect either, but there's nothing wrong with sometimes or always preferring its advantages (more realistic faces and proportions, less blocky body shape, more detailed outfits) over those of the mi

Colors In Bionicle

Recently I embarked on a quest to identify LEGO's official RGB values for the colors used in BIONICLE. Yesterday, out of boredom, I took it upon myself to transcribe these as well as the color names on my BS01 Sandbox. Some observations: First, BS01's Kraata Variations page is a fabulous resource for identifying official color names, especially metallic color names. The Kraata, despite their bizarre color combinations, managed to stick to colors that had previously appeared in BIONICLE. The fi

2013 in Review

So 2013 was a mixed bag for me. On the one hand, I've done an amazing amount of MOCing this year. Many of the MOCs I've created are ones I'm incredibly proud of. I've created some art, too, though not a whole lot, all things considered. I've gotten a job (albeit a temporary, part-time job I'd never have gotten without my mom pulling some strings). I had the time of my life at Cloudsdale Congress (which exposed me to the incredible brony music scene), attended lots of fun brony meetups both in Bo

Wisdom Teeth, The Sandman, And Mars Mission

Got them out today. All fours. It honestly wasn't as bad as some people make it out to be-- in fact, once it began it was inexplicably thrilling, perhaps because of the inherent knowledge that all of that surgical poking and prodding was for the sake of "fixing my mouth". So yes-- fairly exciting.   Before and after the operation, I spent time reading the remaining two The Sandman graphic novels (a wonderful DC Comic series by Neil Gaiman), and once I was back home I eventually went to work on

Everyone Turn Your Attention...

...to this post   In every topic that relates to your personal opinion of a set, one person seems to come up with the excuse that "such-and-such isn't true BIONICLE." Why is this? Because some people are so insistent upon having sets follow tradition that they have to make excuses for why the present is not a criterion in the future's tradition.   I'm not trying to discredit the topic starter in particular, but rather the whole illusion that "some sets are more BIONICLE than others."   I hope

Brickfair Plans

Hey, everypony! I know I haven't blogged in a while but I figured I ought to share what my plans are for Brickfair VA this year. Yep, my brothers and I will be going again this year, as has become a tradition. I'm a bit sad that this means I can't make it to BronyCon, which is going to be in Baltimore the very same weekend, but hopefully next year the two events will be scheduled on different weekends but BronyCon will remain near my home in Virginia.   Anyway, I've already registered my MOCs fo

Gendered LEGO Marketing — Then and Now

This amazing LEGO leaflet from the 1970s has been making the rounds this week. It's definitely worth a read. But unfortunately, some people have tried to spin this as "look how much LEGO has changed" when in fact that's at odds with the truth of the situation.   Believe it or not, the 1970s were not some idyllic time before the concept of gendered marketing existed. During the 1970s, the LEGO Group had two themes which had what could be considered "dolls houses": "Homemaker" (http://brickset.com

Life Update 4/6/13

Hey, BZPower. Sorry for not being too active this past month. Life's been kind of crazy for me.   I suppose before I jump into talking about fun things like MOCs, I should get the important stuff out of the way. School has not been going well for me. I'm in my second semester studying Industrial Design, but my classes have really been a huge source of anxiety, which has at times been crippling for me. I have a couple weeks left here in Boston, but after that I'm going to take a semester off to g
