Update on my Progress through Omega Ruby

Toa Smoke Monster

Well, I've made some progress on Omega Ruby since I last posted about it. I thought I would just give you all the highlights of my journey so far.

1. I've beaten the first five Gym Leaders. Some were more of a challenge than others (looking at you, Wattson), but I enjoyed that challenge.

2. My goal of using only one Pokemon (Skitty) to win all five categories in the Pokemon Contests continues on. It's already won the Master level in the Cute category, and I'm currently completing with it through the Beauty category. Though this one has been a little tougher. I lost to a Machoke in one of my last Beauty Contests. That's right, a Machoke beat a Skitty in a Beauty Contest. I guess anything's possible in the world of Pokemon. :P

3. I was very surprised at what this game did to remake Mauville City. They really upgraded it here, with a bunch of new stores and places to check out. It definitely gives me a Lumilose City vibe, but without the feeling of getting lost every time you go there. I really like it.

4. Along with Grovyle and Swellow, I've been using Numel, Aron, and Manectric on my team. They've all been really good Pokemon, which I know because I've used most of them in previous games. :P

5. I was going to use a Sharpedo on my team as well, but then something happened in game that didn't in the original. (Spoiler for Omega Ruby incoming for those who haven't play the game) I find Steven Stone on Route 118, where he talks to me about something. Then, out of nowhere, a Latias shows up. Steven suddenly says that the Latias wants to take us somewhere, and next thing I know we're flying off into the sky to a distant island that wasn't in the original Ruby game. After we land, I walk down a pathway until I enter a clearing, where a Latios is floating around. Steven joins me, and then we are attacked by Team Magma. Steven and I beat them, and then Steven says that the Latios actually wants to join me on my adventure. This is the first time I've ever seen a Legendary Pokemon simply you on your adventure instead of having you battle it. And on top of that, it has it's Mega Stone so that it can Mega Evolve. Since I've never used a Latios on my team before, I decided to use it instead of Sharpedo. So now my team is complete! B-)

So that is what has been going on with my Omega Ruby game. I'm now preparing to trek through the next route to get to the six Gym Leader. I look forward to any more unexpected surprises in store for me. :)

I ended up using Latios in my Omega Ruby team as well. It's weird—I normally avoid using legendaries in my team in Pokémon games, since it often feels cheap to me and I'm usually quite happy with my team's structure by the time I start actually getting around to catching them. I was originally just going to use Xatu. I think a number of factors were involved in making me choose Latios—the fact that you obtained it fairly early in the game, the fact that it happened as a key part of the journey rather than just as a sidequest, the fact that unlike Xatu, it had decent stats and could Mega Evolve (and was a non-Flying-type that could use Fly), and of course its utility in the post-game as the only Pokémon you could use to soar through Hoenn...

I kind of hope they do some similar things in future games. It's nice to have a legendary that I can think of as a partner rather than just a prize.
