Summer Nuva Mask Review

Well, while BZP was down I got the last of the summer Nuva masks.

No, seriously.

Alright, it wasn't in the Nuva set. But still, Solek does just as good. :sly:

Pic 1: Hau Nuva. Comes equipped with standard accursed double-grooves which thanks to Mask of Light replaced the traditional triple-grooves on Lhikan's Hau. But hey, it's the Hau Nuva, so I'll let it slide. Drawing the new and old Tahu Nuva has been fun thanks to this mask.

Pic 2: Kaukau Nuva. Most obvious of the three. Between the gills/filters, nostrils, and fins atop the head, I doubt anyone having both masks has not noticed the similarities.

Pic 3: Pakari Nuva. Least obvious of the three. Until actually seeing Solek's mask in the plastic it was not entirely clear whether Photok's or Solek's was intended as the Hau Nuva. Similarities began to jump out once I mustered the courage to actually look at the original Nuva masks, as well as once Solek's mask was out of the package. Some of the noted similarities are a bit of a stretch, but when hasn't the Pakari given me trouble for the purposes of these edits? The mouth similarity is next to undeniable, and I find it rather an irony that the Nuva with matching mouth styles in the originals maintain the same similarities in the new masks, albeit with the designs switched to new 2008-edition ones.

Drawings will come in time.

With all due respect,

I would absolutely love it if Gali had Tanma's mask in blue... It looks more like a hypothetical Noble Kaukau Nuva to me than a Great version, but it's still excellently close.

Solek's, I see the similarities you point out, but the general shape is so different that it just doesn't work.

Photok's... just doesn't work, really. Overall the mask looks like a Noble Kakama – and I would greatly like it if Pohatu Phantoka had Photok's mask – and any similarities to the Pakari Nuva beyond a vague mouth shape have to be invented rather than presenting themselves. I can see where you got them, but they're really a stretch. And again, the shape's entirely different.

Of course, we all know Gali's real mask won't look anywhere as near the Kaukau Nuva as Tanma's does. -_-

I prefer it as a great Kaukau Nuva. Just doesn't have that old-person-vibe we've seen on the other noble masks.

How is the shape not similar? The only differences I see are that it's not grotesquely fat or veiny, something I think is an improvement. Anyway, these shapes are simply aspects of structure, something which carries little weight in my judgement of masks (still lovin' the masks of the Nuva Phantoka, moreso having drawn them ;) ).Also, I've seen the leaked preliminary pic of new Tahu and in all honesty what I saw at this stage is not what I wish to see in the actual set (then again, final versions of sets have pleasantly surprised me in the past...).

Yeah... but still, the similarities were close enough to work in my drawings, and that's good enough for me. Structurally it is similar to the original Kakama, however its motifs are vastly different. Will scan sketches as soon as I can come up with a hairstyle for Onua.

I was satisfied with the Phantoka masks, and found them very similar to the classic forms. I doubt I'll see less come the remaining Nuva. What to expect you to see, of course, is yet unknown.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say you're not sure I'm trying to say. I expect (or would at least be satisfied) to see the Av-Matoran masks featured on the remaining three Nuva. Whether the same applies for the Shadow Matoran and the remaining Makuta is harder to tell, since we don't know quite what the other Makuta are supposed to look like! The names give us hints, but it's up for speculation whose mask would go to whom even if such was the case.

Rest assured, they won't use them again. Fine by me, I like the mask styles this year, and I'm hungry for more. More similar to the old style than the Mahri.

*only looked at pix due to lack of time. Apologizes*

Interesting. As you said, Solek's wasn't the best. But the others are good.

Solek's actually works really well once you see the actual plastic version. Took a while to get it to conform to my drawing style, but I managed, and it turned out wonderful.

Work with me here; I'm trying to maintain hope that LEGO's not wasting as much of their new piece budget on the Matoran than I thought before. As I said before (did I say it before? No time to check, but if not, I should have), LEGO isn't likely to disappoint me so soon after the better-than-expected Phantoka, but I'm still hoping the theory proves to be true, so that the ownage Nuva drawings I've got so far aren't destined for the scrap-heap. In related news, I came up with a hairstyle for Onua, so I'll scan and post my sketches as soon as I finish this post.

Which is.... NOW.

Some of those are rather obscure, especially the Pakari. I'm expecting a (non-canonical) Turaga Gali with Tanma's mask in blue as a promotion.

The Onua one worked well enough in my drawings... Still, it is admittedly a stretch, and I am beginning to lean toward the alternative theory of dual basis; that is, the Matoran masks may share basis between the Phantoka and [insert final summer Nuva/Makuta name here]. Hey, it'll at least offer the chance of seeing more unique-looking store exclusive sets than Mutran and Vican (not to say they're identical to Chirox and Kirop, for that is the assumption of the ignorant). Anyway, I've got my fingers crossed that one of these theories is correct, simply because my drawings managed to cooperate with these masks and will likely cooperate nearly as well, as well, or better with masks that share basis with these.

Interesting... they do look very alike...

Onua's is what's really holding this theory back. Still, depending on how the new one looks as a Pakari or Pakari Nuva, I might have to decide Photok's may not be so bad after all...

Glad to see someone can understand where I'm coming from with this theory, though I'm pretty sure I'm not and (depending on what the new masks look like in 3-D) perhaps shouldn't be right.
