From the new LEGO mag (no, I don't have it; I got this from a scan and transcript):

Q: Do you have a favorite Character?

A: My favorite character is Click. In the original script the unnamed scarabax beetle was supposed to change into a shield and stay that way for the whole film. I thought it would be fun to give the beetle the ability to change back and forth and also give him a name. That way, Mata Nui would have a little companion to take along his journey.

Reminds me of the Pixls from Super Paper Mario.

Good observation. Yeah, sorta the same idea-- little fellows you carry around who turn into useful tools when you need them.

Back when I had a topic about this theory it was ridiculously hard drilling it into people's heads that no, Mata Nui doesn't need to kill his little beetle friend to turn him into the shield. I thought that one screenshot we saw early on was evidence enough, anyhow-- you don't just give the Ignika a big ol' hug and not get a curse/transformation of some type or another.

That's the most bizarre thing to occur in Bionicle... o_O

And I thought what happened to Nidihki, Krekka and Nivawk in the second movie was freakish.

More bizarre than the Toa Mata fusing into two beings, each with an individual consciousness? Or sentient Av-Matoran who share the element of light turning into any of six varieties of robotic Bohrok?

"Freakish" in BIONICLE largely depends on what one expects-- I personally find the notion ofan animal companion that can turn into a weapon much in line with BIONICLE's proclivity towards fantasy, and I could have sworn I've seen the archetype used before in a more traditional fantasy context.
