What Ticks Me Off The Most

Art theft is wrong, guys.

Wrongwrongwrong.

This includes tracing other people's pictures and posting them as your own creation.

Kay? ... Kay.

*goes to fume*

For those that are asking about it: yes, I ran into an art thief today, yes, the situation has been taken care of, and no, it was not on BZPower.

Art theft is worse than plagiarism in my opinion, because a lot of feeling and soul gets put into art. Sure, you can write a great story, but it's still just made up of words; words that anybody else can use. It's just the order that makes them yours.

Art, on the other hand, is yours, completely yours. It's something that you've taken out of your own imagination and given being. Stealing art is like stealing part of someone's soul.

(And I'm not trying to be cliché; that's just how I feel about it)

The only thing that makes me angrier than plagiarism is the torture of kittens.

Aww. I'm sorry. =[ Hope that guy/girl learns his/her lesson.

I'll have to respectfully disagree with you here, Eyru. They may be done through different media, but art and writing both involve a huge contribution of soul and feeling into the project. Any project involves that, really -- constructing a bench, building a house, even if that something isn't entirely from your imagination, it's still something you put your sweat and heart into, and it hurts just as much whether it's art or writing that gets plagiarized.

I hope you get better though, Nikira. For what it's worth -- *airhug*

It's good that the situation is all worked out at this point.

But like what Multivac said (Spink's_Cat), writing a great story takes just as much practice, as much patience, as much time, as much mental strain as drawing a great piece of art. In a sense, they're both works of art, one is just through the usage of words while the other is through a usage of lines and geometrical shapes -- both require the imagination, skill to capture the audience (Different ways, of course), and the years of practice as well as the successes and failures many face. A good book to me, isn't worth less or more than a good painting. But that's just my opinion on that, though my stories aren't great enough to be stolen which could be looked at as a good/bad thing. :P

My head shakes at art thieves. :<

In terms of art theft vs plagiarism, I think both are equal in my art school as caught doing either results in expulsion. :\

Then graphical art, by your argument, is just made up of paints or pencils that anybody can use, and it's just the order in which you stroke them on the canvass that makes them yours. And paints are even more physical and less poignant than the abstraction of language.

(In my opinion, literature is the highest form of art: it channels the soul, beauty, and imagination of the author and the human condition is a wholly pure form, unfiltered and unsullied by the physical realm. Great literature is sublime.)

Your implication that literature doesn't have 'feeling,' 'soul,' and 'imagination' put into it is honestly rather offensive to my sensibilities.

@Nikira: Hey, I love you =)

Oh geez, art theft. Those people drive me up the wall.

I'm not sure if it's a good or bad thing that I have yet to catch a art theft for my stuff.

And I hate thieves too.

EDIT: I apologise for my rather rude post. I looked it over and realised I was getting pretty steamed. I just needed to walk away and cool off.

What I was trying to say is that I'm both an artist and a writer, and I find that I can express my thoughts very clearly in writing, while I find it easier to express my feelings through art. To me, literature is an expression of thoughts and ideas, while art embodies feelings and emotions. That's why art theft is worse to me than plagiarism. More of me is going into my art, as opposed to writing where it's my thoughts.

Do you see what I'm getting at?

Oy, calm down guys. :[ No one is forcing their opinions on anyone else. You're just like on the extremes of both ends here, yikes.

Eryu, I agree with your description of literature. I also agree with Smeag in his description of art. Anyone can write, and anyone can make art. I don't believe that either is higher than the other - they both need some imagination and brainpower behind them, after all. :P That also means it's offensive to see both art and literature being taken advantage of.

Eryu, I tend to lean more towards your side, since I am a fellow artist and don't often see the imagination put behind writing. It doesn't mean that there isn't any there, though, and I can still see that writers work really hard behind their works. Wouldn't that mean that they'd get just as much soul torn out if their works were copied? :)

I understand - and I'm totally okay with you feeling that way, so no worries. ^^; I'm merely advising against assuming that others share that scenario - I, for instance, am exactly opposite: I find I can display my feelings and emotions far better through literature, whereas with visual artwork I'm display more literal, physical ideas.

But all forms of artwork are equally valid, is what I'm saying. :)

I see art theft and plagiarism as basically the same thing, namely, taking someone else's work and passing it off as your own.

And yeah, art theft booooo just make your own stuff it's a lot more fun.
