Call It Torture, Call It University

I'm so exhausted, mentally and physically. Spent all of today trying to get classes scheduled correctly, and most were all full. It's all a mess and I'm one hour under full-time, my classes are scattered around different towns. It's a miracle I scrapped up enough to pay for this semester.

and my first classes are on Monday and I don't have any books yet. Oh right, I forgot about the cost of books...and gas...how in the world am I getting to classes when my car broken, anyway?

I want to sleep forever and ever and eat chocolate and play with Lego/Bionicle while watching Roman Holiday, pretending none of this happened. Which actually isn't a bad idea. (sorry if I sound whiny btw, I'm going to be fine, just ranting)

do any of you college veterans have advice? I'm so clueless on everything.

Woah, that is rather a mess. But I'm glad it's going to work out!

My advice is to search around for discounts on textbooks. There are a fair few sites where you can get really big discounts on them; I use a site called Chegg where you can rent textbooks for a semester, and you can get those big expensive ones for like half-price, you just have to send them back after the semester. For the smaller ≈$20 ones, you can usually get them used for pretty low prices on Barnes & Noble or Borders. Have to pay for shipping, but it still saves you money.

I dunno, I liked the idea of your suggestion the best. :sly:

Just don't try to go to school full time and keep a physically exhausting job full time. And I hear you on textbooks... just blew my last paycheck on all of them, and I still have one more to buy. :o

Online is the way to go. We bought all of my textbooks this semester for under $200 this semester from some website. I wish I could remember the name. Just Google the ISBN of the book you need and you should find good deals.

Also, be 100% sure you need the textbook before you buy it. So many times I've had a class where I hardly ever opened my books and still got As/Bs. Check the school library too. They may have what you need.

Check with the teacher and see if you can use an older edition of the required reading. Most updated versions are nearly identical, publishers just gotta make dat money too, yo.

But hey, just try and enjoy your first week. You're in college now! Enjoy it!

Also, great Relient K reference.

As much as I would agree to this, that idea now would be horrid for my health. Still trying to work out a way to get money during the semester, though.

I think I'm okay on the textbook ground. Since I home schooled previously, my mom is a expert at finding books at bargain prices. I can't believe how expensive these books are, it's such a scam.

Yeah, most of my books this year were around $90 a piece in the school bookstore. Blegh. :(

Half.com is a nice place to find some stuff, and sometimes you can find a good deal on Amazon or halfpricebooks. :)

Renting textbooks is always an option.

Also, I would exhort you to not believe the upperclassmen when they say there's virtue in skipping class. It varies largely on what you're in college for: if a degree is your goal, class is where you belong. Quality Points won't come any easier than they do in the first 1-3 semesters.

If you're coasting along for something else, then priorities obviously shift.

Only $90? You theater guys have it easy. I remember how my chem books were roughly $350. And that was just for one class.

How do you know a car belongs to an engineering student? The books inside are worth more than the vehicle itself.

Seriously, I was paying up to $1400 a semester on my books.
