Holiday Special?

Inferna Firesword

People who know me know I like writing holiday specials. And I had one -- it's just not something I could post in the SS forum right now.

Technically, that means I don't have one this year, but if you wanted, I could just paste what I have in this entry.

All depends. =D

EDIT: Spoilered for length. It's just a snippit, mind, so don't yell at me.

The snow fell silently on the alpine island, settling on the violet shoulders of the Gravity Toa. Despite the peaceful-looking white blanket, he couldn't afford to forget that outside the island’s boundries, there was a war going on. At anytime, duty might call and they’d be off to –

A loud, wet SMACK! suddenly resounded through the snow-covered trees.

Spluttering, Kronus wiped the cold remnants of a snowball out of his mask’s eyeholes, gold eyes flitting around to try and locate his assailant. Sneakily, he used his powers to lighten the gravity of snowflakes, directing them into his hands and packing them tightly into a ball.

A crack of wood being snapped underfoot caught his attention, and he whirled and threw the missile behind him. Another smack rang out, and half-frozen exclamations rang out from the azure Toa, wiping snow off her face. “That was hardly fair,” Eos complained once the frozen water was out of her mouth. “I didn’t see you making that snowball.”

Before her team leader could come up with a retort, a flurry of snowballs flying out of the forest forced the Gravity and Water Toa to make their stand on the spot. Shrieks of laughter bounced around with the snowballs, the illusion of peace shattered, as Kronus and Eos exchanged fire with Matsu, Cargan, and Baird. Reinforcements for both sides came in the form of Catriona, Althea, Crevan, and Alvis, adding to the white chaos.

Technically, this was supposed to be a routine inspection of Rohaya’s defenses. In actuality, they were just goofing off.

Well, most of them were. Paytah and Egan, while they would’ve gleefully joined in the fight, had an unfortunate handicap in that their abnormally high body heat made any snow that touched them melt. That didn’t mean that they didn’t try to get around it, but they weren’t making much progress.

As well, their other Toa of Lightning, Stara, flatly refused to leave the warmth of the fortress whenever snow was on the ground. This wasn’t unprecedented, though: Stara came from a southern chain of islands, where it was warm all year round. Even centuries after leaving her home, she still wasn’t used to the colder temperatures up north. Unless there was a raid or a patrol to be done, she practically never left her place in front of the hearth.

Another snowball whacked Kronus on the back of his neck, abruptly ending his train of thought. Growling playfully, he wheeled and flung another white orb at Baird, who dove behind a tree to avoid it. The problem with the game was that the sides kept changing, with members mutinying and rejoining sides every five seconds.

Stara curled up on the bench parked beside the roaring fire, in the great hall of Rohaya’s fortress. She was wrapped snugly in a blanket, and had a relatively new book in her hands. She had gotten it the last time she had visited the nearby port city of Shi-Nui, and while it was utterly forgettable to her, it gave her something to do in these winter days.

Another warm body – this one more significantly so – settled down on the bench beside her. “Not outside, Stara?” a male voice asked, and the Lightning Toa turned to see Egan settling himself, two steaming mugs in his hands.

“You know me; I hate the cold,” she retorted. When he offered it to her, she gratefully took one of the mugs from his hands and sipped it: hot chocolate, thick and frothy.

“I know that. But you’d think the others wouldn’t have to ask after all this time,” he replied, cupping his drink in his hands. He stared out at the frosted window, where snow had piled up on the other side. “I don’t like staying in here, though.”

“Yeah,” added Paytah, suddenly appearing with his own mug and making the other two jump slightly. Considering the fact he had used his Kakama, Stara was surprised that there wasn’t hot chocolate all over the stone floor. “All the others are out there, having fun, and I can’t join in because I keep melting the snow.”

Egan grimaced sympathetically. “What’s your point, though?”

Paytah looked around, as if checking to see no one was eavesdropping. Once he was satisfied that they were the only living souls in the entire hall (and the entire fortress too), he lowered his voice conspiratorially. “Everyone thinks we’re in here, and I know for a fact there’s at least one snowball fight going on out there. How about we get all the others in one place and nail them all?”

Egan and Stara looked skeptical. “All seventeen of the others?”

“Yeah, I have a plan. You guys in?”

Egan looked at the cryophobic Toa of Lightning, but she snickered. “Seems worth going out in the snow and freezing my mask off for. Let’s do it!”

Paytah grinned and drank the rest of his cocoa in one gulp. Slamming the mug down, he said, “Then let’s get started.”

“This enough?”

Amaya took a step back from their handiwork and pursed her lips. She, Sirien, and Hesprides had been engaged in a SnowToa contest with Ares, Calhoun, and Demetrius, both teams of three working on one creation each. Farther off, she could see Atlas and Washi – both whom had declined to join in – dumping snow on each other’s heads and making winged imprints of their bodies in the snow.

“I dunno,” the Water Toa said slowly, eyeing their creation up and down. They had set out to make a generic Toa – complete with sword, shield, and Kanohi Hau – that was their height, but somehow Sirien had managed to convince them to make the Toa twice their height, going by the excuse that her elemental energies would enable her to move the giant snowballs into position. (Amaya was personally betting that “somehow” had been the other Toa pushing some suggestions into their brains.) At the moment, though, it looked more like a deformed Steltian bruiser instead of a regal Toa.

Sirien – being a Toa of Psionics – saw where Amaya’s train of thought was going and stepped back as well, eyeing the large mass of snow and ice. “Well, it’s not that bad,” she offered, trying to look on the bright side. “If anything, it’ll look impressive.”

Ares looked up from the snowmound that was currently being evolved into a dragon sort of thing and snorted. “Yeah, an impressive failure, I think,” the Toa of Magnetism said critically, before returning his attention to the fangs of the snowbeast.

Hesprides teleported behind him and promptly knocked him maskfirst into the white stuff, but no one really took his comments seriously; he was like that for everything. However, he did have a point about the messy statue.
