  1. Take it from a teacher – we hate distance learning too.

My university is trying as hard as possible to do in-person classes (primarily for economic reasons, but there's an added benefit for the actual educators). It is hard to do with physical distancing, though – my class sizes are twice as small due to space limitations.

Glad to hear that you're getting something out of it, at least. Computational skills will set you apart when it comes to job applications.

  2. I don't even remember for how long I've been following your academic endeavors, but I am so very happy for you and to see things coming to such harmonious fruition.

    Since at least 2012. Thanks!

That's Mr. Dr. Professor Akano to you!

    So many titles! :0

    Whoah, congratulations! =D

    Thankee!

Give extra credit for obscure Bionicle references

My students this year will have been born around the same time as Bionicle. Munch on that for a while...

HOLY HECK YOU DIDN'T BOTHER TO MENTION THIS WHEN I CALLED OVER XMAS???

    CONGRATS YOU DUMB JERK!!!

    THANKS YOU DUMB JERK!!!

  3.

Taking a course on fourier transforms right now. Cool!

I would have loved that course. My formal training with them came in bits and pieces in class, along with LOTS of independent study.

    akanohi.png

Really? That's interesting. Right now we've only used the Fourier method to solve variations of the 1D heat equation, but the point of the course was to (at some point) help formalize some of the math used in our undergraduate QM course that we're taking in parallel.

Fun fact: the Schrödinger Equation is an inhomogeneous version of the heat equation, so you have mathematical background that will serve you well in QM!

  4. tl;dr: Math.

But, it's cool math! Right? D:

I've been waiting for this entry.

EDIT: Definitely like the website's layout. It's easy to read and satisfies just about every aesthetic craving an academic could have. Which might be like, one or two nitpicky things.

Apparently, so have I. I spent a good two weeks crafting this one.

Hey man, I can draw squiggly lines too.  I don't even need no fancy math neither.

My squiggly lines are better! :P

  5. If you can get your hands on a copy of the original Majora's Mask, play it just for the boss battles. They're incredibly unique and fun (except Gyorg, he's obnoxious regardless). In my opinion, the 3DS remake took away what made those boss battles so enjoyable and reduced them to basic formulaic fights.

Also, oh yeah, A Link Between Worlds was excellent. A massive improvement to its predecessor.

  6. Majora's Mask is my favorite Zelda game. Did you play the original version or MM3D? In my opinion, the boss fights are better in the original.

I've played all of the 3D Zelda games, but I've missed playing about half of the 2D Zeldas. The only Zelda games I have played but haven't enjoyed are Skyward Sword, A Link to the Past, and Four Swords Adventures.

  7. Edit: I had a joke with emoji that actually doesn't display here.

So uh, feel free to delete this or whatever.

You could probably use images from Emojipedia. And to answer your question, yes, of course that's a thing.

    "You all asked for this"

But can a fresh graduate with a doctorate help himself? Of cosecant.

    Wah-wah.

    my god

    a doctor

so can you prescribe math medicine now or something

I can legally prescribe marriages in the state of Kansattica!

  8. This is the best news. Congrats!

    Thankee! ^_^

    And now the obvious question:

    What's up, doc?

    ...*sigh*...

    Change your dang username.

Part of me wants to do this, but another part thinks this would be too pretentious.

    Seriously congrats!

    That's awesome, congratulations! :D

    Thanks! :D

  9. I've missed these entries.

These entries always make my day. You have such a nice way to write about mathematical things - and I love the choice of topics. Especially that of this entry. C:

I'm super glad folks like these entries. ^_^ I particularly wanted to write this entry for weeks now, but the words wouldn't come out until just recently.

Psh, that's nothing. I can draw that without even lifting my pencil.

    :o

  10. Maya Fey was a spirit medium who had it all.

Then one day she was accused of murder!

And she's about to find out that being a suspect isn't so grand.

Maya Fey in Phoenix Wright: This again!

    Rated PG 13

    Da derp-a derp-a derpy derp!

    Blog title "Spirit..." :o

    "...of justice" :(

It's okay, SPIRIT; we still love you.

  11.

I have not heard of this... overt one singing... how does work?

dark magic, apparently. 1/10 would not practise on lawn again. :D

(on a serious note...good question. Apparently you're filtering out overtones that are naturally present in the voice. o.o Sounds interesting.)

Yeah, you shape your mouth to emphasize the higher harmonics of your vocal folds. It's super amounts of awesome! (It's also really cool to sing into an oscilloscope that shows you the frequencies of your voice, and then see how the peaks shift to higher frequency!)

It's super amounts of fun. Especially throat singing.

    akanohi.png

Throat singing is still a mystery to me (as in, how it is done). It really sounds cool, though.

I can only really drone while throat singing, but it sounds cool! You have to get an octave to resonate in your throat, and then overtone sing on top of that. It sounds utterly ethereal and spooky, but powerful. I figured out how to do it by starting with a low, guttural voice and playing around with it.
