  1. I'd like to contest that fact Explaining social mistreatment of women with the existence of a male-controlled power system is easily argued against. To begin with, in the west at least, sexual equality before the law exists (with the exception of sex offences, where there is heavy prejudice against men). Both females and males can vote in elected officials. I am indeed convinced that any prejudice on the grounds of sex is sexism. The definition you use (that the term can only apply to those who are marginalized in a wider societal picture) is not at all the 'commonly accepted definition', unless you mean commonly accepted in radical feminist circles. As I disagree with the premises used to interpret the sexism (or lack thereof) in Bionicle, I cannot say I am convinced by these arguments in support of the conclusion 'Bionicle is sexist'.
  2. You lost me, and I imagine lost quite a few others. I was under the impression that men belonged to a sex, so sexism against them is easily conceivable. I can't see how one could possibly argue otherwise without completely changing the definitions of the terms being discussed. I cannot possibly imagine how Lego friends can be considered 'an important step' while Bionicle is thought of as sexist. I'd have thought the fact that the business of these females is making friends while the males in Lego's other toylines save the world would enrage those passionate about representation
  3. I don't find your argument that the characters do not have a sex convincing, as I reject your premise defining the terms male and female. There're more cultural ideas about the two sexes than reproductive ability. That said, you have a point about marketing. I'd make a comparison to 'My Little Pony', as that's a toyline that has a skewed gender ratio to the opposite extreme. Yet no one declares it to be sexist, and indeed the latest iteration of the show was created by a feminist. This double standard is something those claiming Bionicle to be 'sexist' should consider.
  4. Pic related leaked in the first half of 2008. The map leaked a bit later, and the thread here examining the theory was very popular that year. I always thought it was a shame that they kept it a secret for a decade until the last few months.
  5. I'll start with the sunny Caribbean island of Montserrat, ravaged by its volcano in recent years: Which I reckon looks a lot like the island of Mata Nui. Do you know of any other locations that look like places from Bionicle?
  6. Found this on Google images, and it's pretty much as I remember it. Definitely my most nostalgic image.
  7. The fact that the original topic has turned into a debate on epistemology is a good indicator that the discussion has gone as deep as it can go Despite this, I still challenge the 'Bonkles is sexist' crowd to cover my uncertainties I would prefer Bionicle to have more female characters because it would allow people in the real world to be more evenly represented in Bionicle. It’s important for groups to have a character to relate to, as it creates a stronger sense of self. I recall an interview with the first African American in space stating that they were inspired by watching Uhura in Star Trek. The world is split more or less 50/50 male/female, so Bionicle would be a better story to entertain and inspire the population of Earth if there were more female characters. However, I do not believe it has an obligation to do so, as I don’t see how having an unbalanced gender ratio constitutes any kind of moral offence, let alone one motivated by sexism. An action is not being taken that shall mistreat a person based on their sex. If you believe that someone else is more likely to be sexist after watching/reading/playing ‘Bionicle’, then go and join the ‘video games make kids violent’ camp- I hear they’re rather lonely. I admit that Bionicle, by having an unbalanced gender ratio, does not depict my values on representation. This is not a problem for me, as I only prefer, not demand, a work of fiction to share my values. Furthermore, I feel that a world where all media, did portray my values would simply be an intellectual echo chamber. A world where all media we 'feed' to children shared my values would be downright dystopian. This is a fallacious slippery slope argument, but should still convey why I find the demands to ‘retcon’ previous Bionicle stories somewhat repellent. Of course, this assumes that we don't know for sure what the ‘correct’ set of values are. If you believe your own values to be correct beyond doubt, then of course Bionicle is incorrect. I, however, am not smart enough to have worked out a set of values that are unquestionably correct.
  8. The Hordika are also my least favourite as they aren't symmetrical. The lenses on my nostalgia goggles must be pretty thick, though, 'cause I have no problem with the Toa Mata! My favourite team would have to be the Toa Nuva. If they had real knees and elbows they'd be perfect!

  10. I was trying to avoid bringing up Time Trap, as I thought everyone else would I think what made it so great was that it wasn't retelling what was already set out by the story team, so Greg was free to go wild. Doh'! Now I want to read it again!
  11. It was true at the time. An update would be needed if anything (people in media would use the phrase: wrong but not for long!) We've got the same leaked material from two different camera angles, and evidence of Lego trying to remove the content, so source reliability really isn't the issue here. Rather, the key detail is that it's not official from Lego, and the admins have decided to respect Lego's wishes and only discuss new information when it's official. The important question is whether this decision is in the best interests of the community.
  12. I've been with BIONICLE since the very first Lego Mania Magazine promo pic featuring Onua. I pull imaginary rank on all of you - Heir We all survived Bionicle's five-year hiatus and we're still here preparing for it's return. I'd say that makes everyone who fought for Bionicle's return a veteran. (Since Toa are fighters, and we're now veterans, I guess that makes us Turaga. So depending on how you choose to see it, we've all been promoted, or demoted). Here's an idea, classify all the ancients here from Bionicle 1.0 as 'Turaga Members'. Actually no, that would just create the divisions feared in this thread As has been alluded to, I think how well a new generation of members will get on with the existing crowd will depend heavily on how good the new Bionicle is. If it's good, then we'll be united in geeky praise. If it's bad, a divide might be inevitable.
  13. I dont want them to release Mask of Creation as a collectible set only. If [reference to the leak retracted from the quote just in case] isnt in fact that, I hope they introduce it later, or, not at all. Mask of Creation is one of the 3 legendary kanohi. I think it deserves a bit more than release as a collectible pack. As far as I know there's no evidence, leaked or otherwise, that a Mask of Creation is to be released, so no disappointment needed yet. And hurrah, another new member! Welcome to BZPower!
  14. Just for clarification, what is your idea of a reboot? My idea of a reboot is going back to the beginning on the Island of Mata Nui. How would that work if the cat's out the bag that there's a giant robot face underneath the island? As the Big Story Engine is revealed, a reboot would need a new 'mystery box'. This would be tricky, as if the island is still called Mata Nui, how would it be made clear that there isn't a planetary repair robot underground. I can't see it working. I imagine there will be a new location, which is a good thing
