  1. (cross-posted from Brickset) This is just something I've been thinking about lately. When #70751 Temple of Airjitzu was announced, a question that seemed to be on a lot of people's minds is "how many AFOLs will be interested in buying a Ninjago set?" (or conversely, "how many Ninjago fans are even old enough for a set this size?") This is something that I see a lot of in the AFOL community — themes like Ninjago being perceived as "too childish" for most adults to take a serious interest in. And yet at the same time, that seems to fly in the face of the actual target audience for these themes. Many AFOLs are perfectly fine with buying LEGO City sets, and yet even the largest LEGO City sets such as #60097 City Square (1683 pieces, $190) and #60098 Heavy-Haul Train (984 pieces, $200) are recommended for ages 6–12. By comparison, the smallest Ninjago sets like #70752 Jungle Trap and #70739 Airjitzu Kai Flyer are aimed at ages 6–14, while the largest non-exclusive sets like #70732 City of Stiix and #70738 Final Flight of Destiny's Bounty are aimed at ages 9–14. The Temple of Airjitzu itself is aimed at ages 14+. Some might point to the "silliness" of the story as evidence of the Ninjago theme's childishness, what with the colorful ninja piloting sci-fi vehicles and fighting robots, ghosts, and fantasy monsters. And yet there are plenty of AFOLs who have no trouble enjoying LEGO Super Heroes sets (and the corresponding Marvel Cinematic Universe movies) that portray fights between Norse gods, robots, aliens, mutants, mech pilots, and B-movie monsters. I've also heard plenty of AFOL excitement for the Scooby-Doo theme, based on a series in which a bunch of teenagers and their talking dog solve formulaic cartoon mysteries perpetrated by middle-aged men and women in goofy monster costumes. Are these things honestly any less silly, or is it just the veneer of nostalgia that makes AFOLs less afraid to enjoy these "old-school" cartoon and comic book adventures? For what it's worth, the LEGO Ninjago TV series can be quite cerebral compared to what you might expect from a merchandise-driven cartoon, with plenty of character development, complex storylines, and moral ambiguity. The LEGO Ninjago sets are intricate and full of creative part use, elaborate action features, and intricate details. So why is it that so many AFOLs who casually enjoy themes aimed at an even younger audience have a hard time seeing Ninjago as anything other than a "kiddy theme"? The only explanation I've been able to come up with is that character-driven, genre-blending themes like Ninjago are so different than the themes many older AFOLs grew up with like Town or Castle. Because so many kids, teens, and young adults like these themes in a way they can't begin to understand, these older AFOLs assume that themes like Ninjago are simply more childish than the LEGO themes and movie brands that they continue to enjoy from their own childhoods.
  2. Okay, so this is assuming you've seen the recent episodes, including the Season 5 finale "Curseworld." As I've stated in the past, Ninjago hasn't been so great lately about keeping the plot very consistent, and this one's no different. First problem is Nya. She's now the water ninja, but why didn't she learn Spinjitzu first, like the others? When Zane, Cole, and the others started out, they were trained to use Spinjitzu, which allowed them to become a tornado of their element, which later helped them master the power of the Golden Weapons and grow in power. While Nya doesn't have a GW to represent her element, a tornado of water would have been very useful for both offensive and defensive purposes. Training her to do Spinjitzu would have been quicker and more efficient than trying to make her do everything Jedi-style. To further this issue, back during the Stone Army/Overlord story, Nya was poisoned by the Dark Matter, and became a being of darkness. In this state, she was seen to use Spinjitzu multiple times, mainly to attack her brother and the other Ninja. Also, her spinjitzu appeared red, even though her color's at the time had been changed to black and grey. Why was it red, then? Perhaps to represent the color of her true element, a.k.a. fire? It's been said before, and I'll say it again: Consistency is not a mild suggestion. But why do I bring this up as unresolved? Because Nya had a spinner set TWICE in the early years of Ninjago, despite her never learning how to perform the art. Will she ever learn it, or not? ---- Second point: Cole. In case you missed it, Cole is still a ghost. This is a problem, because we know the process could easily have been reversed. Why? Because, if you check the episode immediately following Cole's transformation, he began to change back on two occasions: when he was hugged by Nya, and when he was encouraged by the other ninja. In both instances, one of his hands regained a solid form, though the break in emotion caused the changed spot to return to its ghostly form. Here's where I have a problem with this: They never mention this again. It's not even apparent to Cole, himself, who should have felt the change in his own hands. But, really. The camera zooms in on this the only two times it happens, making it seem like something big and emotional would happen by the end of the season, causing Cole to revert to normal. If those instances were never meant to amount to anything, why even show it in the first place? On another note, how was Ghost-Cole able to handle the Aeroblades? If the weapons are deadly to ghosts, then how was our favorite ninja able to hold them, let alone use them as intended without hurting or destroying himself? Again, consistency, please. ---- Third, Garmadon. Lloyd finds him in the Cursed Realm, and then apparently switches clothes with him. If Garmadon was chained up, then how did Lloyd get the robe's sleeves off of there without freeing his father? I know it's meant to be a kids show, but even then, a little logic here and there would be nice. Also, who in the Cursed Realm bothered to chain him up? It's not like he was going to escape from there any time soon. ---- Fourth, Zane. In the episode with the FSM's tomb, Zane saw a future version of himself which he described as looking older. He's a full-on machine, made of metal. I can understand scratches here and there, but wrinkles? Suspension of disbelief can only take you so far. ---- Finally, deepstone armor. In one of the earlier episodes, Zane is hit by a ghost attack that was meant to turn him into a ghost. It has no effect on him due to the armor. Two problems arise from this: 1) The ninja spend the entire rest of the season avoiding these same attacks like the plague, despite the fact that their armor makes them immune to possession and being transformed into a ghost. Which brings me to... 2) Cole turned into a ghost. Shouldn't the deepstone have repelled this change, to some extent? I understand that the circumstances were a bit different, but I still don't see how this had no effect on him. But, then, why didn't the armor just repel Cole? Make sense? A substance meant to reflect ghostly powers was turned into a ghost. Anyone else see the problem here? ---- Sure, this season had fewer issues than the last one (*cough*elementalmasters*cough*), but some of this stuff deserves an explanation. I could think of more if I weren't so tired right now, so I'll just leave it as is and let you all dig in. Thoughts?
  3. My review of all six Ninjago Airjitzu sets went live while I was at BrickFair this weekend! Check it out if you're interested in the parts of these unique new sets!
  4. I picked this set up a couple days ago, and since BZPower hasn't reviewed these yet, I figured I'd take the jump on them and do one first. Will this set carry you and your dreams to the clouds? Or is it best left grounded? The Box The box is just as you'd expect. Some decent artwork showing off the set and all its contents. It's made of that same thin paperboard stuff we're so used to by now. The back shows off more of the same, as well as the lineup of all six Aijitzu Flyers. Contents Within the container, you will find a single bag of parts, one propeller, and one ripcord, as well as an instruction booklet. There's a decent variety of parts. For a set like this, though, the function is meant to outweigh the pieces. As such, it doesn't have a very good piece-to-price ratio, but it does contain this variation of Morro, which is only available in one other (very expensive) set. Morro comes in his ghost form here. We see him in the original ninja suit, though in green this time, and wearing Lloyd's symbol. The back has printing, and it features his Japanese-style symbol. His head has only one face, though. The set also includes a few weapons, most interesting of which is the new shuriken mold. The blades are slightly curved, and the handles are decorated like the katana handles. These are my favorite piece here! Building process The building process is fairly straightforward and simple. You build the minifig, build the handle, and click the spinner together. And then you're done! Playability There's not much to say about this. You put the minifig in the dome, and you send it flying. With the spinners, you had a game you could play with them. I suppose this time around, you can take yours, and have a friend launch their own, and see whose goes farthest. Beyond that there's only so much you can do with them. I did take mine out to the local school playground, and I discovered that it holds up fairly well against being dashed against the pavement (oops ). So, they're definitely durable, which is a plus! Final thoughts All in all, I like the concept here. For the figure, I think this is a good buy. It's nothing too special, but if you want something fun to take outside during the summer months, this is definitely a decent purchase at only $10. Well, I hope you enjoyed my first review, and hopefully I'll get around to doing more in the future.
  5. Ok here is the picture and LOOK VERY CLOSELY: It LOOKS like his symbol is Lloyd's and the FIRST SPINJITZU MASTER's SYMBOL. At least that's what I see. I know it CAN'T be his symbol, but IS it??? Oh, and he's also wearing a SIMILAR suit to the ninja's FIRST suits. Do you guys think that this is CRAZY, or is it JUST me?
  6. Okay, so I have a couple problems with the new story. Starting with the "masters of the elements." So, where exactly do they fit in? We were told that they are descendants of the original masters of the elements, and that Cole, Kai, Jay, and Zane fit into this category. How does this work, exactly? The First Spinjitzu Master, who was the father of Wu and Garmadon, formed Ninjago using the four elements, represented by the Golden Weapons. Why is there a problem with this? A few reasons. One, because there were only four GWs, of the elements Earth, Fire, Lightning, and Ice. Somewhat related to this, there were only four elemental Dragons. You could argue that other Dragons exist, but we just haven't seen them. Two, if TFSM is the father of Wu and Gamadon, both practitioners of the four elements of Spinjitzu, this would mean that the four ninja (and Nya) are descendants of him, as well. Three, if all these elemental masters have been passing down their powers through the generations for thousands of years, then how old are Wu and Garmadon? Their father was the guy who brought their land into existence, so that means that those two have incredible longevity. However, that doesn't work. Why? One reason: Lloyd. When we first met him, Lloyd was a child, implying that he'd only been around for a few years. This doesn't work. We saw that picture of a younger Wu, Garmadon, and Misako. Garmadon was banished to the Underworld while he and Wu still looked young. This means that the "undead" version of Garmadon actually WAS able to leave the underworld, and he got Misako pregnant. However, we know they hadn't seen each other since before his fall, so that means that it couldn't have happened recently. Okay, I feel like I'm starting to bounce around a lot here, so I'l condense it: Story 1--the Golden Weapons: Ninjago was created thousands of years ago by The First Spinjitzu Master, who was the father of Garmadon and Wu. Garmadon, presumably while he and Wu were still fairly young, fell into the Underworld, and was unable to leave it. Many decades later, after Wu had a chance to age, he trained four young men in the art of Spinjitzu, which manifested in four elements. Story 2--Serpentine/Garmadon's mischief: Garmadon had a son with a woman named Misako before he fell into the Underworld. Lloyd was seen alongside the Ninja (who are depicted as being fairly young, themselves) while he was still just a kid (pre-teen or early teen). If the first story is to be believed, then Lloyd couldn't be Garmadon's son, or Garmadon spent only a few years in the Underworld, and Wu aged significantly in that amount of time. Already the timelines aren't adding up. Story 3--The Overlord: This one mostly follows suit of the first two stories, taking into account the significance of the First Spinjitzu Master and the creation of Ninjago, as well as the importance of the elements (four elemental blades in the Temple of Light). Story 4--Nindroids: Again, this one follows suit of the first few stories, with little retconning. Story 5--Tournament of Elements: Okay, here's where things get screwy. Suddenly, the First Spinjitzu Master (who harnessed the powers of Fire, Earth, Lightning, and Ice, and subsequently passed it on to his sons) is related to Kai, Cole, Jay, and a robot who was built by some guy, and therefore can't bear a genetic connection to the element of Ice. And then there's all these other guys with different powers that have apparently been around since the time of TFSM. "Many generations," Garmadon tells the Ninja, even though there's been only two generations separating Lloyd from TFSM. What's worse is that no one seemed to know about these other powers, until it became convenient for Garmadon to reveal that they had always existed, without any indicators like Golden Weapons or having a hand in the formation of Ninjago. Another point that came up in another topic is that Lloyd is now the Master of Power, instead of Light/Creation, as he was from the moment he became the Green Ninja. No story's perfect, but now they're barely trying to keep the lore consistent. What do you think? Is there something I missed? Thoughts? Theories? Theatrics?

  9. Hello everyone! I am new here and I want to discuss about Ninjago summer 2015. It looks like their new enemy are Morro(which means hill), and ghosts. And season 6 is coming out sometime in either July or August. Please tell me your thoughts.
  10. Since Cartoon Network aired the last 5 episodes in a week (probably to air them before the second half with the ghost ninja) and since previous topics generated little or no response I thought I'd combine the recaps and review of the last 4 episodes. Spoilers Ahead You have been Warned. Episode 7: The Forgotten Element Alternate Title: 'Does this seem kind of familiar to you?' Recap: So Chen rounds up the remaining contestants except for Lloyd and promptly steals all their powers. (I'll get to this in the review.) Skylor (I'm dropping the Mortal Kombat monikers since they dropped the tournament pretense). Skylor asks that Kai be spared and Chen agrees even trying to recruit the red ninja to the dark side. When Lloyd, Nya and Garmadon sneak in, they are betrayed by an unconvincing dark Kai. Garmadon grabs Skylor to extort Chen, but Chen calls his bluff. This causes an Incredibles-type conversion in Skylor. Elsewhere, the losers have built their jet. It can't fly but still has weapons so they use it to bust out. They save Nya and Garmadon on their way to freedom. It's a grand melee as Chen is about to gain all the powers. But Skylor nicks the staff, after a mad scramble the staff breaks and everyone regains their powers. The defeat the cultist, but Chen, Clouse and Skylor escape. The ninja are reunited and the bad guy is defeated, so why are there 3 more episodes and why do I have this uneasy feeling that things are about to get worse. Review: First, lets settle this power stealing rubbish right here. So Chen could steal anyone's power at any time. Why set up this tournament? Why not seek out each master and steal their power while they are alone and vulnerable? How is this banishment enforced? These aren't critical questions, but still plot holes that make the ride very bumpy. Kai's betrayal and act felt low stakes. His fight for control against the staff was ok, but not much above that. You can see scenes lifted from James Bond, the Incredibles and X-men here. The fight between the Masters and the cultists could have lasted longer. Overall, it is ok, but you can tell this isn't the finale or even the end of this particular bad guy.
  11. Hello out there Ptah here. Since the latest episode has been up for a while, I thought I'd get the topic thread rolling. I'll add my own snark-tastic spin down below, but I'll need to change it up. When I commented on earlier episodes, they had been out for a month or more. Long enough that spoilers didn't feel necessary. These more recent ones will get the spoiler treatment. Ninjago Season 5 Episode 39 "Spy for a Spy" Summary: The Ninja Alliance faces trust issues that could tear it apart before the next round in the Tournament of Elements. Nya reunites with Kai and the others and snoops out the spell on page 149. In the Labyrinth, Cole frees Zane and make plans to bust everyone out. Spoilers Ahead You've been warned Episode 39 - Spy for a Spy Alternate Title - "Crouching Kabuki, Hidden Snake" We interrupt your March Madness for a little game of 'I've got a secret'. The Ninja are feeling smug about their alliance. Of the remaining eight only Shadow is not on board. Tsang hears about this and shreds their alliance by adding his staff of powers to the purse. In the B-plot shelf, Cole manages to steal the cell keys and free Zane. Nya and Dareth make it to Chen's stronghold. They dress Nya up as a Kabuki dancer and she contacts the Ninja and manages to steal the spell on page 149. These two plots take the spotlight while the Ninja figure out who is the spy in their group. Shadow acts suspicious so the naturally accuse him. Kitana acts straight up helpful. If you are over 10 you know where this is going. Kitana's the spy; Shadow's the patsy. Oh and Jay injuries his leg. As if he wasn't useless enough before. Nya is found out and Clouse gives chase. This leads to a Crouching Tiger-esque running battle that's pretty cool. Nya escapes into the Jungle with the spell. Cole and Zane stay to free the other prisoners. And Chen and Kitana plan their endgame for the Ninja and the Tournament.

    NINJAGO 2015

Here's a theme where doing it anime style is appropriate, Ninjago! Here I made a giant banner containing all five Ninja in their new outfits in the 2015 story arc. I'll also be doing more Ninjago fan art as well, seeing as how this and my anime style mesh more easily than BIONICLE.
  14. Starting on Lego Cuusoo (Ideas), I've created Ninjago Constraction figures! Link: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/96211 The original Moc's were just the five Ninja, then grew to more characters! Can Cole, Jay, Kai, Zane, Lloyd, and Wu fight Pythor and the Overlord? I hove you like my Mocs! I planned them very carefully to match their Minifigures. Thank you and buy Ekimu!
  15. So, what does the everybody think?

    Ninjago

Those Ninjago sets look pretty good but I know next to nothing about the plot of Ninjago. So here's my guess as to what the plot of Ninjago is, based on nothing but the sets: 2011: Ninjas start being trained by the old beard guy to defeat the evil skeletons, who threaten to destroy the ninjas for some reason. There's also some evil dude named Marmalade or something who commands them who's pretty much the Makuta of Ninjago as I understand it. They succeed and the skeletons get punched out of 2011 to 2015 Bonkle where they will enact their revenge on the Toa. Marmalade survives though. 2012: Marmalade decides to do the exact same thing he did with skeletons, but this time with snakes as skeletons were too bony, so he is now in command of the skeletons. The Ninja get upgrades somehow and this green dude comes out of nowhere, kind of like Takanuva did for the Toa Nuva except this guy wasn't a normal guy who put on a Ninja hood of green and transformed into a ninja like how Takua put on the Avohkii and transformed into Takanuva. Snake dudes are also poisonous. 2013: Not much happened this year except everyone got a vehicle or a creature of some sort to ride to breach a temple of light or something in the hopes of finding the Ninja Hoodvohkii, the Ninja Hood of Light or something. The bad guys are... still Marmalade except with clones this time, as snakes and skeletons didn't work. 2014: The Borg invade Ninjago somehow, which is a city somehow, populated by ninjas probably. They assimilate old beard guy and the white ninja guy with their evil borg ninja while also somehow purifying Marmalade who is now not-evil. He dies heroically probably or turns evil again and it was all a disguise and is killed for it, because he doesn't appear in 2015. Other than that, not much happened this year either. 2015: The snakes return for revenge probably, this time without Marmalade, and also some of them have become human somehow, probably to better combat the ninjas as snakes generally don't have arms or legs although they do have venomous fangs. Or maybe they're evil snake hunters who have killed the snakes and are wearing them on their heads as a show of superiority, in an attempt to threaten the ninjas. There are also mechs loaned from the late HERO Factory, which went bankrupt, because the Ninjas also have a dragon problem in addition to a snake problem. and maybe even later a snake-dragon problem. The only way to win is to beat the snakes or something. Old beard guy is good again too and wants to atone for his crimes probably. I don't know how inaccurate or accurate this is, but... I'm just going to repeat that the Ninjago sets look pretty good. Probably one of the better system themes of this year.
  17. EDIT: Tahu has been added! Somebody on the BZP FB page commented on Pohatu's cyclonic sandstorm ability resembling Spinjitzu... Naturally, I took the opportunity to do this! Move aside, Dareth. Make room for the TRUE Brown Ninja! Apparently, Pohatu has been taking lessons from Sensei Wu. And, here's Tahu: You're welcome.

    Ninjago Miis!

So I thought I'd share some Ninjago Miis I'd created with y'all. These were created specifically for use as Mii Fighters in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS! Kai pic (QR Code) Zane pic (QR Code) Cole pic (QR Code) Jay pic (QR Code) Lloyd pic (QR Code) Nya pic (QR Code) Full gallery (when public) My personal versions have the Ninja as Mii Swordfighters wearing Ninja Suits with Shuriken of Light (Neutral 2), Airborne Assault (Side 1), Hero's Spin (Up 3) and Blade Counter (Down 1) as their specials. Nya is also a Swordfighter, but wears the unlockable Samurai Armor and Samurai Helmet, and uses Blurring Blade (Neutral 3), Chakram (Side 3), Stone Scabbard (Up 1) and Power Thrust (Down 3) as her specials. Of course, if you download the Miis yourself you're free to do whatever you like with them!
  19. Deep in the sands of the desert it waits... For those who will claim it and seal their fates... ^^^^ Click for gallery ^^^^ Hello, everyone, and welcome to the Ninjago Gem Oasis, my SBC entry into the Ninjago Monster Contest, and the very first location-based MOC I've ever made! I think it turned out fairly well, and I hope you share that sentiment with me. Metal detector pieces are hard to find a use for. Happy viewing!
  20. Okay so I went to the Ninjago website on LEGO.com a while back and I found a funny error on the picture for the box art for LEGO Ninjago: Nindroids. On the side of the 3DS game's box, you should be able to see the logo for the game, Super Smash Bros. I found this beyond hilarious for the fact that this hasn't been changed sense it was posted to the website! http://www.lego.com/en-us/ninjago
  21. And here's #2. * * * Episode 1: Rise of the Snakes And the great story begins…with a bunch of boys in a room eating pizza and playing video games. I think this is quite a daring way to re-begin a story based on the Ninja actually doing some real Spinjitzu, although it does provide something that the target audience of the show will relate to instantly. Also: product placement. Also: implicit sarcastic commentary on obvious product placement, which is hilarious. Notice that all of the other four ninja – red, white, black, and blue – are in the picture with the green ninja. This counts as foreshadowing. Also the green 5 on Lloyd’s outfit – he’s the green fifth ninja (also the fact that Lloyd is introduced at the same time as the Green Ninja prophecy is a nod to the savvy). And then Wu slips up, says that none of them are the green ninja, and then channels it into talk about power levels. (I never thought that any of the original four was the green ninja, and in hindsight in was pretty obvious why. And I thought the green five was weird, but didn’t put it together. I was in the camp that thought Nya was the green ninja. But anyway.) If you haven’t caught on already, Kai is supposed to be the brainless one. Generally. Also overly ambitious and running off sans plan. It’s a tradition from Bionicle: fire types get no respect. Always. Episode 2: Home This episode begins with a poke at the last episode. In that, Sensei Wu looks out at the training course for the ninja first, then looks in the TV room. In this episode, Wu looks at the video game room first, then finds the ninja in the training course. "Of course not. Everyone knows that cuckoo birds are not indigenous to these forests." Weird how the “Mud newt” looks like fish. Episode 3: Snakebit This is your standard well-crafted parent humor episode. It’s also rather standard in a lot of other ways. Still, not every episode of every series can be expected to be weird or heartwarming in specific ways. What I like about this part of the series is that it is incredibly focused. Each episode focuses intensely on a specific theme, and uses every subtle detail it can to refer back to the theme. Snakebit is a prime example – every opportunity possible is used to reference the “respect your parents” message. This actually grows out of the messages of “Home” that is “Home is where the heart is.” It’s almost a flip side: Zane is guided by fantastic things in the absence of parents (or rather, his “parents” guide him through strange means) whereas Jay is told to respect his literal parents. Like the Lego Movie, positive parent themes abound. Episode 4: Never Trust a Snake Okay, first off: How did Zane get the vision? On the first viewing, it’s just a fantastic Ninjago thing. But Zane is a robot. So there’s a message that Zane and the falcon shared. Maybe Zane’s dad programmed the message to be sent, or even hit the button himself. But that would mean that he would have access to the data of both the falcon and Zane, through the Ninjago equivalent of 4G. Anyway, fun things to speculate about. This episode does a double theme. The first is the title – blind trust =bad. The second – “The best way to defeat your enemy is to make him your friend” actually flies in the face of the first, because trust is required for friendship. So you can laud this as wonderfully complex storytelling or slam it as ambiguous and contradictory. Personally I like it because it truly means to be careful how you judge people. Lloyd misjudged the Fangpyres and Pythor to his severe detriment; the ninja misjudged Lloyd multiple times, first as a threat, and then as a friend. (Of note: in the first meeting of the snakes, the Fangpyres and the Hypnobrai “defeat” the other tribe by becoming friends, and in the same moment, Lloyd’s trust in the Fangpyres is shattered. This brings the complex theme-ry together neatly without disclosing Sensei’s riddle until the end, and the rest of the episode just serves to bring the two themes apart so the audience can see them and then tie it in a knot again.) Pythor: “I’m sorry, my appearance can have an unsettling effect on people.” That improved with his time in the Great Devourer, I’m sure. Frankly, the extent of Pythor’s treachery with the rebooted series is now incredible. I have no idea why he wanted to unleash the Great Devourer, as that would be nuts, but maybe he wanted an appearance change. In any case, apologizing for his appearance is characteristic Pythor. He’s such a gentlesnake. Episode 5: Can of Worms With the “Samurai” thing, it becomes really obvious that Wu is using appeals to prophecy and ancient Legend not because prophecy and ancient legend actually exist to explain the phenomenon, but because everyone expects him to know everything. In short, he’s making stuff up. Also, why does Zane pull out the Sacred Flute when surrounded? That’s an okay idea if he thought that stunning them with the flute would get them out of there. I guess he underestimated Pythor’s reach. Never a good thing to do. If you look closely at the Samurai, you’ll see Nya’s bracelet. It’s basically an open secret thanks to the set anyway, but knowing the secret doesn’t hurt this sequence nor the sets that follow – it actually makes them more funny. Episode 6: The Snake King Nobody can handle all of the Golden Weapons’ power at once, so why does having them in a bag not fry Nya or Kai? I guess the bag means that they aren’t contacting all of them at once, so they get off the hook. This is one of the funniest episodes if you know who the Samurai is – all of the boys are getting beaten by a girl. Classic. Also, Jay’s attempt to figure it out is hilarious regardless of whether or not you know. There are plenty of “tells” by Nya and other related things if you know to look for them. We get to, in a surprise, see Nya’s true potential before any of the others. Ladies first. Episode 7: Tick Tock In the class of blatant foreshadowing, the first thing we see in this episode is: gears. Lots and lots of gears. We wrongly attribute it to the clock instead of Zane, but you know. Also: everyone likes gears, so that’s definitely the way to start this famously amazing episode that everyone likes. GEARS. Oh, this episode is about Zane, not Jay. Start over. In the class of blatent foreshadowing, Zane stays underwater for a ridiculously long time, which is justified in the fact that robots don’t need to breathe. He even pets a fish for fun. Now, I’m going to stick my tongue out at this episode for two reasons. First, aside from the robot (which looks suspiciously like C3PO), and the treehorns, everybody loves Zane. Which makes everyone overlook the fact that this episode actually has three plot threads: 1) Zane, 2) Pythor, and 3) Wu. Which means that in reality this one is headed for Dark Destiny and Reign of Shadows territory. Secondly, aside from Zane, neither plot thread is really very interesting. Fortunately, neither of those two plot threads is given much screen time, so we ignore it – which makes the latter feel tacked on as an excuse to extend the story for a few more minutes, and also for your “suspense ending”. Pythor knows where the Fang Blades are and Wu ran into Garmadon! SUSPENSE. Also, I generally like aspens, and they tend to be beautiful things, even in the dead of winter. So that aspen-like legs with that incredibly ugly body is…unique, I guess…but it sends the wrong message about the trees. Although the story gets points for realistic portrayal of the real aspens: they really do live at higher altitudes. The “inside” of Zane as shown here is different than in the rebooted series – although that’s probably the fault of the reboot, not this episode. And, if you can design a hidden tree fortress and a robot to protect it, can’t you design a door lock? Episode 8: Once Bitten, Twice Shy Alright, now let me establish this: everyone loves Zane, but I don’t like Jay. For one thing, he’s a womanizer. Second, lightning was canonized in Bionicle as a female element, yo, so it was technically our idea, but when Lego scrapped Bionicle, they made two guys who controlled lightning, which is basically giving BZP no respect. And third, both of those lightning guys, Surge and Jay, are incredibly annoying. The third thing probably has personal bias since I ramble too and it is not a redeeming quality, but whatever. All of these things just make this episode more hilarious. What isn’t funny is how Nya ends up in the supporting role, but I suppose that comes with the territory. Whatever happened to that crowning moment of heartwarming in the rebooted series? Also, Jay’s heart rate could have been raised by impending death instead of what actually happened, or it could have anyway, but no excuse for lazy writing. And how did nobody notice the burning ring of fire? And whether the ring would have actually killed them is debatable…although I think it could have been bad. It’s still a heartwarming episode, as all the True Potential ones tend to be, but I don’t like this one because it comes at Nya (an otherwise strong female character)’s expense. Out. Episode 9: The Royal Blacksmiths One positive point for this episode (and 8) is that they integrate Pythor’s POV more smoothly with the ninjas’. 8 had the other 3 ninja characters tacked in, though – 7 and 8 suffer from too-many-characters syndrome a good deal. Episode 9 solves this problem: every one of the ninja and Pythor and the snakes are all woven seamlessly into the plot. A dance competition lends itself well to lots of characters. Therefore we don’t have the swinging camera problem. Also, good blend of the opening theme and the dance/fight. Episode 10: The Green Ninja And now the The Green Ninja is…not Kai. Everyone can be excused for thinking that his theory from the last episode is correct, but the thirtieth rule of critical reading is this: never trust a character’s theory. So game over. The second thing is: how did Kai know he was wrong? The guy who is the most crazy actually ended up being right. Of course, it took the longest for him to get it – the others didn’t have that as an obstacle. Also, let’s face it: Kai has the coolest power. A flying fire shield. Sweet. Episode 11: All of Nothing This episode starts a tightly wound continuity that leads to the release of the Great Devourer and its defeat, which everyone knew would happen. This episode makes an attempt to trick the audience into thinking that this intuition was wrong, and exchanges it for another one: Of course the ninja will win. So it can make two cliché answers both true at once. Doesn’t Fangpyre venom terraform metal anyway? And why did the snakes attack the exact person who was programmed to defeat them, as opposed to the opposite? I suppose the correct ninja headed straight for the correct set of snakes, but I suspect PLOT might have been at work as well. And I suppose the Anacondrai’s special power is turning invisible, which everyone seems to forget about. That could explain why that particular breed was so terrifying to the others: an invisible army of half of them could sneak up behind you while you were battling the other half. In yonder case, Pythor’s ability is not well emphasized, so when he does use it you forget that he has, and that he has a reason. It also doesn’t make sense for a leader to vanish much, which makes the whole thing ironic. It’s also confusing because he could have used that power to have avoided being eaten by the Great Devourer in the first place, but it explains why he doesn’t appear after the Devourer is destroyed: invisibility. And the ninjas just got ninja’d. Episode 12: Rise of the Great Devourer A reminder that all stories are games of seconds, inches, and character mistakes. “You’re now leaving Billund” sign lol. And many people have rightly pointed out that the ninja forgot about their weapons that turn into vehicles. So they did. Episode 13: Day of the Great Devourer As you might expect, this is one long “RUN! FIGHT!” episode. If the golden weapons can turn into vehicles, I imagine that all four can turn into one, and Garmadon used that. Or he used the Earth scythe to tunnel into the ground and used the subway system to walk out. Kai gets a comeback in here: he’s rallying the team, even when everyone else wants to give up, which is him not being wrong like he has been all season. In the end, they need Kai. As for the fight, it’s splendidly executed, and we all really wanted to see a fight at this point. Final Thoughts This honestly is my favorite season of Ninjago, since it contains the largest amount of mystery and character development. Three mysteries were set up and resolved, the main antagonists remained convincingly evil and dangerous. Other surprising reveals developed Lloyd from an ineffective antagonist (he caused lots of trouble, but he didn’t really get what he wanted) to an uncertain being on the side of good. Lord Garmadon (as is typical for Lego) was developed quite strongly as well, moving from an enigmatic force of darkness to a villain sympathetic to the audience. And the ninja all get developed out in spades, especially Zane…and Kai. Every single character in the story has changed by the end, except for the snakes, and nobody really cares too much about them. (Lego gets major points for concentrating the focus and development bits on Scales and Pythor, smoothly avoiding the “too many characters” problem.)The Great Devourer is destroyed, of course, but other than that. Because of this, season 2 strikes me as the entire series’ high point. While the seasons following aren’t necessarily bad, they tend to be patched together, have episodes clearly meant as filler, or more forced.
  22. Here’s the last one. Episode 27: The Surge Did they rename Darkley’s School for Bad Boys again? And where are those elemental weapons, Kai? The Overlord didn’t steal those too, did he? While I’m at it, I guess the light of Lloyd only blasted the Overlord’s form to bits, and he was standing on top of a tower, so I guess he could have been housed in a computer. We’ve already seen the Overlord in “spirit” form before, so I guess he could take that again and put himself into the computer system – what quicker way to gain power? But he was weakened after Lloyd clobbered him, so he couldn’t get himself out. Hence the messy plan. Of course, the reboot switch for this computer is even messier. Most computers turn off with a switch, and in the rare event that doesn’t work, you can always pull the plug. Why the elaborate reboot sequence? Of course, I suppose this isn’t a reboot as much as a hard-drive format, which is harder to do, but still, why the use of the four-techno blades (dated term, dudes) instead of the standard disk unpartition? I blame sets. I suppose security could have something to do with it, but surely your wouldn’t want the reboot items to be gold, prominent, and unable to stop an invasion from within. Alright. I do like that no matter what they do, the ninja never get any recognition or Life Upgrades. They’re ninja, you know. Also, if you’ve watched season 2-3, you know that Jay and Nya are a thing, but Nya was never consulted on the matter – Jay just filibustered along in typical Jay style. Thus, Nya talking to him about boundaries makes sense. The computer nominating Cole as Nya’s match does not. When computers know anything about love, I will have green pointed ears and be sitting on a boat dock on a planet of the Alpha Centuri star system. Still, given that the computer in this case is guided by PLOT, I’ll give some credence to the idea that the two have more chemistry than Jay and Nya. Cole is less of an overwhelming blabbermouth and would be more respectful of Nya. But I have to say that Nya is a lot better character by herself, and why does the girl always have to be a love interest, or forcefully painted so she isn’t? Anyway, how this ends up pleases me, but what Nya does to Cole in the middle of this season doesn't. There are way too many romance plots and romantic mess going on this season. Stick to the ninjas and samurai fighting evil, pleeeease. Ugh. [/rant] I thought elevators were inside buildings. Also, training staffs are indestructible – they can deflect metal saws and claws. Sensei used the self-sacrifice ploy again. The Overlord forgot to watch his copy of Ninjago seasons 1-3 on Cyrus Borg’s complimentary hard drive. And frankly, the Overlord should keep his mouth shut: the fact that the ninja knew about Lloyd being what he wanted literally sunk his ship. Episode 28: The Art of the Silent Fist The trees in Ninjago are really weird. I get the whole animation dealio, but they still look like turtles. One thing I can’t fault this season for is the pacing. Unlike last season where we had filler and some other pacing issues, these episodes chug along at a breakneck pace. In just a few minutes, we’ve established a whole bunch of details, some of which will be important later, like draining the golden power out of the bots and Wu’s capture. I also think it important to note that PIXAL was evil for a while – what is it with the evil girls, Ninjago? Also, what is it with the dinosaur bones? Last episode we had one just casually tossed aside like it was nothing, and this one had the X cave hidden under a skeleton. I think it’s supposed to be a joke about the contrast between old dinos and new technology, but I think I missed it. And Cole’s dad’s “box” to hide the ninja is too small to fit them all. (Ninjaspace? ) The PIXAL/Zane romance plot has too many holes in it. They just met each other mere days ago, and Zane cuts out half of his heart for her. That’s insane. It’s also Zane – we’re talking about the guy who frees sea monsters out of sympathy and befriends mechanical birds. Still, it’s a bit early to be so affectionate – she did steal the stuff you were guarding earlier. Come on. Episode 29: Blackout Pythor’s invisibility also explains why he was able to sneak into the Borg place and steal the corrupted drive. I like this episode because it gives us a taste of mystery though. I also like the scene with Lloyd and the raptor. 28, 29, and 30 all give us a taste of the affection that Lloyd and Garmedon feel for each other as father and son. Even the venom of the Great Devourer couldn’t overcome it. Episode 30: The Curse of the Golden Master According to the Serpentine, the curse of the golden master is getting too much power, that the power is the problem. Actually, I think the real curse of the golden master is that Lloyd loves his father. He relied too much on the golden power to save him, however – the golden power is slower to charge up than just using Spinjitsu to leap the gap. The ninja running into Scales and thinking him as the enemy is actually legitimately funny. Wrong snake indeed. But where did the weirdly lighted underground space come from? The one where the snakes were sealed showed them in with the stone platform the army was on in a dingy space. They could have made improvements though. Also, if Scales made an oath not to return to the surface, how did he get the groceries and the copy of the Ninjago Times? “Where are my knights in shining armor?” Go Nya! Episode 31: Enter the Digiverse Kai is the guy who normally makes the motivational speeches and handles any situation with confidence, if not downright impatience. Seeing him disturbed is OOC. Digiverse is scary, kids. Be afraid. Be very afraid. Go Nya! Do not insult the samurai of Ninjago! Also, the title sequence for this season refers pretty strongly to this episode. Episode 32: Codename: Arcturus Okay, so why does Kai not use his NRG flaming-shield flying fireball here? That would get him back in the car, and even if he was tired PIXAL could still drive. I guess flame on cars = bad period. He also could have used it to fly up to Pythor if he was so big on kicking his white tail. He could have used it offscreen, I suppose, although that’s hardly stealthy. Still, in that situation Kai wasn’t aiming for stealthy anyway – he made it clear that he was going for broke, so why not actually go for broke? *sigh* I think this plot of trying to get the golden weapons from space is a really cool idea that will lend itself to some comedy come next episode. Also: does Spinjitzu work in space? We will soon find out. (Unless you live in Australia, in which case you already know.) Not-so-final Thoughts I hesitated to release this one because there are two more episodes left in the season, but I guess I’ll see what the future brings. So far, this season has been well-paced, humorous, and tense with lots of dark drama. Unlike season three, the pace has increased to reflect the drama level. The romance plots feel like a distraction to the overall picture, but fortunately the story hasn’t focused too much on them. A few niggling logical quandaries are its thorns in its side as well. Hopefully those will be resolved as the story goes on. So far, it’s a fine piece of work, and I look forward to seeing what happens next.
  23. I found this in a bulk. Does anyone know how much it is? www.flickr.com/photos/114873918@N08/15533108465/
  24. An obligatory "what's your favourite ______" topic. So what's your favourite story arc from Ninjago? I'd probably say the Serpentine, but I haven't seen all of the Rebooted episodes yet (are they on Netflix yet?).
