  1. Morphol Built for the Creeps from the Concept collab, a collab in which we built mocs based on Barraki's original concept art: In this case, I chose the one with the orange visor and long arms. I decided to reinterpret the long arms with a pair of tentacles and create a sort of diving suit for this creature. I used both Vidiyo and Dots rubber pieces for this moc, the head is also made of rubber parts: 3 white Kraata. 08/10/23
  2. What if the baraki squid comes with eight colored breeds? This should of make the barraki uniqueer than ever... However I'm not stupid when it comes to originality and tradition at the same time. To my suggestion each baracki should've gotten different squid breeds Kalmah = yellow Carapar = green Pridak = black Ehlek = purple Takadox = red Mantax = blue ??? = Trans-white\glowinadark ??? = Silver any more suggestions??
  3. BS01's Unnamed Species List has a ridiculous number of sapient species in the MU. Many of them were first mentioned in the bios of the Barraki, OoMN, and DH and simply waved off as their own unique species. But for several years, it's been my fascination to condense this list into as few species as possible based on similar physical traits, powers, or histories. Many of the inconsistencies are easily explained by mutations or technology, or simply interspecies variations. Just as Matoran and Skakdi have elemental subspecies, many of these other species could be divided up in new ways. But before you go critiquing my decisions, please give the FAQs a read, as they address many of the common concerns. This blog entry is the product of three different revisions of this list, primarily my research but also that of others noted below. With the rearranging of the forums, I wanted to make sure to post it somewhere safe for mine and other's reference. Also I'm using Spoiler tags for ease of reading without really being sure that's okay, so let me know if it's not... Canon Barraki Other To be reclassified as Rahi FAQs

  6. Hi, guys! I know that Bionicle had ended a year ago sadly, but let’s be happy about Bionicle for something else. You see, this year, 2017, is the 10th anniversary of Bionicle’s 2007 storyline. I know that this year that we got the music album for the movie, Bionicle: Mask of Light’s 14th anniversary, but if you think this isn’t enough for this year, then let’s celebrate the 10th anniversary of the 2007 storyline. That would enlighten you more. Let me tell you the 2007 storyline: The 2007 storyline is about the Toa Inika’s quest to find the Kanohi Ignika, aka the Mask of Life, continuing by going into the sea. It starts off when Matoro successfully got the Kanohi Ignika, aka the Mask of Life, in the 2006 storyline, since the Mask has a mind of its own, doesn’t want to be used in the island of Voya Nui while a hostile Rahi called the Kardas Dragon makes Matoro let go of the Mask. It flies to the sea around Voya Nui while the Toa Inika follow it. However, they can’t get into the water, but their ally, Axonn, shows a way to get there by leading the Toa to the Cord, which is under the island. The Mask falls onto the sea floor. In the sea, there is an underwater city called Mahri Nui, which is near the Cord, and it is inhabited by Matoran. A Po-Matoran named Dekar notices the Mask. A group of evil and mutated warlords based on sea creatures, called the Barraki, notice the Mask as well, and plans to get it to defeat the Great Spirit Mata Nui and take over the Matoran Universe. Long ago, the Barraki were once normal people who rules some parts of the Matoran Universe, but they later on rebelled against the Great Spirit, but thry were stopped by the Brotherhood of Makuta and were sent to a prison called the Pit. However, when the Great Cataclysm happened, they escaped, but a magical substance called the Pit Mutagen mutated the Barraki into sea-creature-based monsters that only breathe water, so they’re trapped underwater. They think that the Mask can reverse all that, too, so they are going to get their hands on it. They lead armies of various sea creatures that they’re based on. The Barraki also threaten people from Mahri Nui. When Dekar is having the Mask, it uses its incredible powers, which cause Dekar to believe that the Mask is too dangerous for anyone to have, so he wants to destroy it. However, Barraki also notice Dekar having the Mask, so they want to take it from him, but he is defending himself. Also however, the Barraki’s leader, Pridak, successfully gets the Mask, but it is using its powers. When the Toa Inika arrived to the bottom of the Cord that leads them to Mahri Nui, the Mask transforms them into their new underwater forms called the Toa Mahri. The team gets newly transformed weapons and masks, but their elemental powers no longer are mixed with lightning, making them normal, and the team only breathe water. That’s the winter 2007 part of the story. Here is the summer part: After the transformation, the Toa meet with Mahri Nui’s people and the Toa say that they will protect the people from the Barraki. The Toa find powerful guns called the Cordak Blasters, and they go look for the Mask of Life. When the Mask noticed the Dekar’s life is in danger, it saves his life by transforming him into a duplicate of another being named Hydraxon, who was killed during the Cataclysm. Hydraxon’s memories bury Dekar’s memories, so the duplicate thinks that he’s the real Hydraxon. He is also the jailer of the Pit, so he goes searching and recapturing escaped prisoners. He captures Matoro and puts him in jail. Along the way, the Makuta of Metru Nui, in his Antidermis form and who got out of the Piraka’s damaged Antidermis tank, finds one of Hydraxon’s robots called the Maxilos, which guard the Pit, and possesses it like a ghost, making the robot as his new “body”, his disguise to avoid being noticed by his enemies, and container for his Antidermis. When he finds Matoro, he frees him because he wants to help him, even though that Makuta is evil. He tells Matoro to reanimate a dead Toa named Tuyet, who got killed during the Cataclysm, which Makuta caused, and get a magical stone called the Nui Stone. However, a tyrant named Karzahni, who is looking for the Toa Mahri, who he abused when they were once Matoran, notices the group and destroys Tuyet. Makuta defeats Karzahni and tells Matoro that in order to save Mata Nui from death, he and the Toa Mahri have to destroy the Cord in order to do it. Then, Makuta and Matoro separate. While the Toa Mahri are fighting the Barraki, when Hydraxon notices the Mask, he remembers from Dekar’s memories that he believes that the Mask is dangerous, so Hydraxon tries to destroy it, but he is stopped by Hahli. Along the way, when a tiny Rahi called a Gadunka touches the Mask, it enlarges the creature into the size so big that it can eat a person. The Gadunka believes that the Mask should be its, so he goes to get and keep it to itself. Jaller tries to get the Mask, but is stopped by Hydraxon while Matoro freezes Makuta to stop him from doing planned bad things. Then, Jaller accidentally frees Makuta from his icy prison by using Jaller’s fire powers. Later, Hydraxon and Makuta fight each other, allowing the Toa to get the Mask again. While the Barraki are having a problem with each other about one of them betraying the others, the Toa evacuated Mahri Nui’s people, so they can destroy the Cord. Before they do, they fight against the Gadunka and its two giant allies. The Toa defeat them before Hydraxon shows up to confront the Toa. The Toa convince Hydraxon that they are not criminals and they need the Mask for their good deed, so Hydraxon lets them go. The Toa destroy the Cord by using their Blasters, so the island of Voya Nui, which the Cord connected to Mahri Nui, sinks into the water, destroying Mahri Nui along the way. The Barraki notice Makuta, so they fight and defeat him by destroying the Maxilos robot that he is possessing, but he disappears after that. The Barraki then go after the Toa for the Mask. Matoro tries to find somewhere where he can use the Mask to save Mata Nui’s life, but he notices that Mata Nui is dead. Matoro feels very sad. However, he doesn’t lose hope, so he goes to find a way to revive Mata Nui while the other Toa buy Matoro some time by fighting the Barraki. Matoro goes to a waterfall, which Voya Nui was heading, where the Mask tells him to wear it. When the Mask shows Matoro that his friends are in danger because of the Barraki, Matoro uses its power to transport the other Toa to safety by taking them to Metru Nui and have them breathe both air again and water in order to save their lives from the Barraki. Then, the Mask also tells him that he has to sacrifice his life to use the Mask’s power to revive Mata Nui. Matoro does so, so Mata Nui is revived, and the whole Matoran Universe is saved. Everyone in there is happy, but when Turaga Vakama tells the Toa Mahri about Matoro’s fate, they feel sad about him. The people of Metru Nui commemorate Matoro for his heroic actions and make a statue of him to remember him as a great hero who saved everyone. Meanwhile, the Toa Nuva meet a guy named Artakha, who gives them new armor and then teleports them to a new place. The end of the 2007 storyline, and that part about the Toa Nuva being in the new place is where the 2008 storyline started. To celebrate, let me ask you this: What are your fond memories about the storyline and/or what do you like about it? For me, I like the Barraki. They look very cool, including that the fact that they are based on different sea creatures. It’s interesting that 2007 is where canister sets started to look different from each other from that on rather than having the same body type like in 2001-2006. I like the new pieces that look like the sea creatures’ parts, and I like how the Barraki look like sea creatures much. The eye pieces are neat as you can plug them into the Barraki’s heads. The mandibles are neat as you can open and close them. Their weapons are cool, but their Squid Launcher is hard to use to shoot Sea Squids. I also wish that the Barraki could have mouths that open and close. The Sea Squids look cool. I like their yellowish-orangish and bluish-greenish colors. Plus, it’s neat that anyone who has Squid Launchers can have clip pieces that store the Squids. One thing about the Squids, though, is that they look more like leeches than squids, so it’s weird to call them Squids, you see. Kalmah is neat because he is based on a squid, has two giant tentacles, and has three eyes. Takadox has glow-in-the-dark pieces, and he has nice knives that look like a mantis’ claws. I like the red spikes, too. He is quite the tallest of the Barraki. One thing about him, though, is that head is a bit hollow. Ehlek looks very cool because of his green spikes and talons. The talons are like Wolverine’s claws from Marvel. However, he doesn’t have a lower mouth. Carapar looks very cool, too, because of his giant claws and new armor pieces. The use of of the color, yellow, is good. However, Carapar doesn’t have a lower mouth, either, and he doesn’t have another claw. Mantax looks neat because of his claws, red spikes, and his upper body looking like a manta ray, but, again, he doesn’t have a lower mouth, and his arms look uneven. Pridak looks very cool because of his fins, blades, long feet, and the red blotches on his white pieces. The small sets look neat. I like the Matoran’s blades and launchers. The Hydruka look cool because they sort of look like scorpions with launchers on their tails. Nice teeth on them, too. The blue Hydruka has a nice glow-in-the-dark as well. The Toa Mahri look awesome, as they look like commandos with giant cannons. I like their breathing tubes, which make the Toa look like that they adapted to water. The blasters look cool, but what’s troubling about them is that you can’t shoot the ammo from them unless you loosen the ammo in the cannons. Jaller looks cool, and he has a nice sword. It’s neat that he has a Hannah crab to be his animal sidekick that hold his blaster. Hahli looks amazing, and she has a nice mask, wing-like fins on her back, and that giant claw of hers. I am not too fond of the green secondary color, though, because it makes her look like a Toa of the Green rather than a Toa of Water. Kongu looks awesome because he looks like a commando with two blasters. I like his mask because it’s neat that he has a green bulb-like thing attached to the mask. Hewkii looks very cool because of his giant blade in his left hand, blades on his right arm, mask, spikes on his thighs, and chains. However, how he wears his mask in his set is weird, and his arms look uneven. Plus, where’s his right hand? Nuparu looks cool. I like his shield. However, he has some restrictions on his wrists and ankles. Matoro looks cool (Get it, because he’s the Toa of Ice? Lol! ), as he has those big claws and giant black tubes. However, his arms look uneven, again. I like Hahli’s, Nuparu’s, and Matoro’s visors because they are neat. But, why do they have red eyes? Now, the large sets. Nocturn looks awesome and beautiful! I mean, this dude that four arms, many glow-in-the-dark pieces, spikes, bulky-ness, transparent blue pieces, swords, a Squid Launcher, and a tentacle, man! The Gadunka looks very cool, as its head is so big that its can eat a person and has a lot of pointy teeth. It’s neat that the Gadunka set uses Ehlek spikes for the teeth. I like the claws, glow-in-the-dark head, use of the blue and silver pieces, and it’s cool that it has a Squid Launcher. One thing I find weird about its set is the neck because it’s very thin. Hydraxon looks awesome because of his various weapons. I like his poseable and clawed hands. Maxilos is mighty great because of his mask, Titan-size, big sword, claws, and Cordak Blaster. I like his flexible torso. Spinax looks great because of his spikes. His head would look like that you could use it to make a seventh Barraki. Lesovikk looks cool because of his blade and shoulder pads. His Sea Sled looks cool, too, as it has a Cordak Blaster mounted in it and the landing gear. It’s like Takanuva and Ussalnui set in 2003. Karzahni looks awesome, as he has chains, spikes, those Takadox knive pieces on his torso, clawed and spikes hands, armor, and cape. His head/mask looks cool because of the horns and spikes, but why can’t he have a one-piece plastic version of his mask? I like the shades of green on him. One thing that I find weird about him, though, is how his neck is built. Sarda and Ibris look cool, like the other two Matoran sets in the winter half of 2007. I like their unique blades, claws, and masks. Their underwater trap looks amazing because of the spikes and its function to trap Karzahni. The playsets, well, look great. It’s cool that some of the Rahi can be used a vehicles for the Toa Mahri to use. They have great weapons and functions. The Barraki have cool-looking mutated sea animals that they have for soldiers. However, not every minfigure, who are based on the Toa Mahri and Barraki, are equal. There is no minifigure for Carapar. All of their heads are messed up. Plus, not all 12 of the characters are in one set, like the one in 2006. Next, the combo models. The Ehlek-Carapar-Mantax one, aka the Pit War Tortoise, looks very cool, but it has a weird neck and stiff points on its ankles. The Kalmah-Takadox-Pridak one, aka Zyglak, looks amazing! It looks like a lizard well! The Carapar-Mantax-Nuparu-Matoro combo, aka the Manutri, looks very cool because it has both a Squid Launcher and two Cordak Blasters, man! It looks kind of cute, too. Too bad that there are combiners for the other Toa Mahri or the large sets. As for the story and media, I think the story is very good. It’s been told through comics, novels, and online serials. The Barraki are cool characters, and they have some good character development. I feel bad that they got mutated into monsters after they escaped from prison. It’s interesting that they don’t get along or others, similar to the Piraka. I see that Brutaka was trying to team up with the Barraki, but they betrayed him, just like the Piraka. It’s not like in Marvel where there are the Sinister Six. Plus, Takadox was secretly a traitor to the Barraki as he was a servant to the Brotherhood of Makuta, the very people who stopped the Barraki from trying to conquer the Matoran Universe before they got imprisoned in the Pit. The Barraki have very cool powers, like Carapar with his super-strength and Takadox with his ability to hypnotize people. It’s also cool that some of their armies have some Rahi from 2002. Plus, each of the Barraki is from his own species of people. I wish there is a seventh Barraki, though. Nocturn is a cool guy. He may be dumb, but he is cool. Dekar is a troubled guy who didn’t know how to handle the Mask of Life. He could’ve just hide it or give it to the Toa Mahri. I felt bad that he was in danger, so the Mask was trying to the poor guy by turning him into a duplicate of Hydraxon. It’s sad that the original one died. It’s also sad that Dekar is currently trapped in the duplicate’s mind, so the duplicate can’t remember that he was Dekar. Dekar’s friends must be worried about the poor guy. This Hydraxon acted like a stubborn jerk he believed that all strangers are escaped prisoners without letting them prove their innocence. The Toa Mahri has a hard time convincing this guy. Makuta is a cool dude. He’s like a ghost. I get that he is trying to be nice to Matoro by helping him out with saving Mata Nui’s life, but he does have an evil move in his sleeve about this. Plus, this guy doesn’t want any opponent to mess with him. The Toa Mahri are great characters with very good character development. Hewkii is grateful that he learned swimming lessons from Hahli. Hahli is a clever hero who knows what to do in order to help her team. Jaller, Kongu, and Nuparu are good characters. They all are good friends to each other. I feel bad they are too are stuck being underwater because they only breathe water. Now, here came Matoro. This dude too was conflicted, but he knew what is the right thing to do. Although he should’ve not talk to evil strangers, he was still a good guy. This dude never gave up on reviving Mata Nui and saving the Matoran Universe. I feel very sad that he sacrificed his own life to use the Mask of Life’s power to revive Mata Nui. Before he died, he also saved his friends from the Barraki by bring them to Metru Nui and make them able to breathe both air again and water. Matoro was such a very great hero. He saved everybody in the Matoran Universe. Though, it’s sad that he died. (crying in tears) I feel bad for Lesovikk for the fact that he lost his team and based himself for it. This also makes him want to kill his enemies, which is against the Toa Code. Sarda and Ibris are good characters. They are good friends to each other and Lesovikk. Karzahni is a cool villain. He doesn’t want anyone to mess with him, and is ruthless. I felt bad that Karzahni was driven insane by Teridax when his mind was damaged by Teridax. It’s cool to see the Piraka again for a brief moment. They got mutated into snakes, and fought the Toa Mahri before they get taken away by Axonn. It’s neat to hear about the Toa Nuva’s adventures during the events of the 2007 storyline. They have been doing some strange and good stuff to get ready for the Great Spirit. Lesovikk and Karzahni May have their own thing with each other, but they could’ve get more involved with the 2007 storyline. Lesovikk could’ve made new Toa friends with the Toa Mahri, and the Toa would try to help him feel better. The Matoran duo would help the Toa, too. Karzahni would also help the Barraki get the Mask of Life and defeat the Toa Mahri, so Karzahni would have more ruling power and take the Toa Mahri as his prisoners again. Makuta could’ve fought the Toa team as well. There are a lot of things that make me feel annoyed. That Bionicle Legends about the Toa Inika’s travels in the Cord shouldn’t have cancelled. It would be nice to look at their adventures more. I heard that Nuparu was supposed to have his Aqua Blaster Blade and Carapar with his two claws in their sets, so these should’ve happened. Kongu should’ve kept his melee combat weapon, which is transformed from his Laser Crossbow. Plus, brown ain’t on the “Stone” characters much. Sad. I have no idea how did these happen. It would be cool to see a set for the mutated Brutaka. Plus, there should have been a combined set similar to the Vezon and Kardas set. Too bad there wasn’t. (Though I would imagine that if that could happen, it would be a mix of the Gadunka, Hydraxon, and Maxilos and Spinax set, and this mix would be a powerful and giant Rahi or a warrior). It would also be nice to see the outcome of that fight between Brutaka and Maxilos. The online serials were introduced in 2007. I thought they are cool as they tell more stuff in the storyline. I wish there could have been a sequel to Bionicle Heroes in 2006. (Though if it would happen, it would be based on the 2007 storyline) So, guys, what are your fond memories of the storyline, what do you like about it, what’s your favorite 2007 set, favorite character(s) in 2007, favorite moment in the storyline, what things remind you of the 2007 storyline, and/or how would you celebrate it? For me, well, my favorite sets are Kalmah, Ehlek, Nocturn, Jaller, Hahli, Kongu, Gadunka, Hydraxon, Maxilos and Spinax, and Karzahni, and my favorite characters are Jaller, Hahli, Matoro, Kalmah, Takadox, Pridak, Makuta, and Hydraxon. The things that remind me are: 1. Hero Factory’s Breakout storyline and the part in there about Furno fighting and recapturing Jawblade. 2. The Serpentine from Ninjago being released from their prison to terrorize people and do something horrible along the way (the Barraki) 3. The Hypnobrai (Takadox) 4. Lego’s Atlantis theme 5. The Lizard from Marvel (Zyglak) 6. That scene in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace in 1999 where there is this underwater city. 7. That one part in a Star Wars TV series called Star Wars: The Clone Wars in 2008-2014.

    The Barraki

Thinking about it, the Barraki were probably among the best waves in G1 BIONICLE. They weren't clones of each other, unlike the Bohrok, Rahkshi, Vahki. Hordika, Piraka, or Inika. They were quite distinct from each other, and yet they belonged together, and you could definitely see how they resembled creatures of the sea, well, most of them. Kalmah is probably the one with the weakest design, seeing as he looks nothing like a squid. Ehlek and Takadox have the strongest designs, and Mantax, Carapar, and Pridak are somewhere in the middle. These sets, I believe, are probably the best example of what made G1 good. Not terrible, not bad, but good. They're distinct, similar, eschewed the clone-sets of previous waves and did something new, and I also believe they are the G1 sets most similar to G2's villain sets: they follow the same theme, yet they are all distinct.
  8. It's been over a year since the last topic, and I've learned my lessons, but this is just an idea I don't want to give up. And since the polls (and S&T in general) have slowed down, I submit this new list for potential canonization. I'll ask for your opinions and corrections, post my rebuttals, and make any necessary modifications. But please read the FAQs before you go off on how Brutaka and Hydraxon shouldn't be Steltans... To recap, BS01's Unnamed Species List has a ridiculous number of sapient species in the MU. Many of them were first mentioned in the bios of the Barraki, OoMN, and DH and simply waved off as their own unique species. But as we look closer, there are many characters with similar physical traits, powers, or histories. Many of the inconsistencies are easily explained by mutations or technology, or simply interspecies variations. Just as Matoran and Skakdi have elemental subspecies, many of these other species could be divided up in new ways. For example: Canon 1. Makuta Prototypes Darkness Eliminator Shadow Stealer This species was prototyped in Protodermis by the Great Beings to fill the role of peacekeepers and creators of the Rahi. Different powers were tested and refined until Mata Nui perfected their design and created them in Antidermis. These were given 42 Kraata powers, Shadow, Kaita Dissolution, and the ability to wear Kanohi. 2. Matoran Subspecies Toa Turaga The main inhabitants of the Matoran Universe, built to maintain Mata Nui's inner workings. Each Matoran possesses an elemental affiliation that is manifested as elemental control should they become a Toa or Turaga. They also have the ability to use Kanohi. 3. Skakdi Inhabitants of Zakaz, initially peaceful and powerless until Makuta Spiriah's modifications, from which they gained elemental powers when used with another Skakdi, vision powers, and other abilities, as well as an unquenchable thirst for violence. This species is known for their claws, wide grins, and long spines. 4. Steltan Subspecies Upper Class Brutaka Hydraxon Sidorak Voporak The Steltan Upper Class are tall and vaguely Toa-like. Though they can wear Kanohi, they do not depend on their use as the Matoran do. Even among the upper class of the Steltan society, their members are divided into ranks. Platinum armor is reserved for rulers while gold is a typical middle-class color. Hydraxon was created as the template for this species and future generations were modeled on him after he joined the Hand of Artahka. This species is resistant to Pit Mutagen and grow far more powerful when exposed to Antidermis, a trait that becomes noticable only in large quantities. Servant Krekka The Servants of Stelt, otherwise known as "Bruisers," are large and powerful beings, but their lack of intelligence keeps them from dominating the upper class. They are commonly used as workers or body guards. They are unable to use Kanohi. Slave Gladiator The Slaves of Stelt are even larger and more powerful than the Servants, and their speed and agility is unmatched by the others, but many are somehow forced into fighting for entertainment. 5. Vortixx Roodaka Conjurer Tracker The inventive and intelligent inhabitants of Xia. They are typically tall and armored in black. Their society is dominated by the women with little opportunity for men. Conjurer stole their advanced technology and set out for a life of his own and became a ruler of a small group of Matoran. They are able to wear Kanohi. Subspecies Johmak A subspecies of the Vortixx with the ability to shatter their bodies into crystal and reform at will. 6. Zyglak An amphibious species with a hatred for Matoran. Their scaly skin is coated with an organic Protodermis destroying disease. They are immune to Pit Mutagen and virtually invulnerable to elemental attacks. Barraki 7. Carapar Axonn Carapar's race was one of the first created in the Matoran Universe, as implied by Axonn's status as an ex-Hand of Artahka member. This species inhabited the Southern Isles and were dominated by warlords such as Axonn and Carapar, the latter of whom was called to be a Barraki. This species is generally large and powerful and have the ability to use Kanohi. 8. Ehlek In appearance, this species closely resembles Ehlek's mutated form. They are unable to breathe air and are thus most members are confined to the oceans around Zakaz. Each member has been modified by the OoMN, giving them great strength and powerful claws to kill Makuta. They are also able to wear Kanohi. Subspecies Amphibax The amphibious brethren of Ehlek's race with great agility both on land and in the sea. Also possess enhanced vision. These species are known to work closely together, even to the point of Amphibax leading other members of Ehlek's species. 9. Kalmah An ancient race inhabiting the bleak, icy land just south of Odina. The inhabitants are split into tribes led by warlords. Ancient's services once turned each tribe against one another in a great civil war that is rekindled every few thousand years. After the first war came to a close, the Shadowed One and Ancient left their island to capture the neighboring Odina after the first civil war. They will never mention their true origins, and they have been forgotten by their people, but the Dark Hunters always welcome newcomers from this island. This species is equipped with natural weapons such as claws, teeth, tusks, and often bladed tails in addition to powerful abilities unique to each tribe. Though they have the ability to wear Kanohi masks, their long, sheild-like faces with two protruding tusks make it difficult and uncomfortable, and thus few do. Tribes Fire/Heat Kalmah Tyrant Lurker Kalmah was selected to be a Barraki after his great successes as a leader of this tribe. He was eventually replaced by Tyrant, who left his position during the Toa/Dark Hunter War to become a Dark Hunter. At once point, Lurker killed a member of his tribe and was banished. This tribe inherits the ability to absorb and expel heat in great quantities, though Lurker prefers his natural tools, and Kalmah lost this ability when he was mutated. Their armor is typically a vibrant red. Earth/Stone Ancient Guardian After Ancient's departure, this tribe was betrayed by one of their own, and Guardian is the sole survivor. This tribe has the ability to make their armor as hard as stone and highly resistant to physical attacks. Their armor is typically blue with metallic coverings. Void The Shadowed One It is unknown if others remain after The Shadowed One left them. They possessed powerful eyebeams that were able to disintegrate a target. Their armor is typically black. 10. Mantax Trinuma This tall species is known for the large horns protruding from the back of their heads, though these became tentacles when Mantax was mutated. They also are able to wear Kanohi. 11. Pridak Tobduk The original inhabitants of Visorak. Pridak was taken to be a Barraki long before most of the rest of his civilization was destroyed by the Visorak. This species is generally tall and powerful and typically has the ability to feed on emotion to grow stronger. While Tobduk feasts on anger, Pridak's emotion may have been pride. They are able to wear Kanohi. 12. Takadox A species with the abilities to hypnotize others and wear Kanohi. Other 13. Botar Botar's Replacement Another race hailing from the Southern Isles, known to be "savage," perhaps meaning more primitive or superstitious than the rest of the universe. This species towers over most others and has the ability to teleport and use Kanohi. 14. Krahka Triglax A sentient species misclassified as a Rahi due to their shapeshifting habits, though they can also take the forms of other sentient beings. Some are able to copy inherent powers of the forms they take, or merge forms together. Very few remain after near devastation by the Visorak, many of whom remain in hiding or serving under more powerful beings who can protect them. 15. Mimic A species from a distant land that was destroyed in a natural disaster. At least some members of this species possess photographic reflexes. 16. Nocturn Sentrakh Four-armed OoMN member A four-armed and powerful species with the ability to regrow lost limbs. They are immune to Pit Mutagen. Their home island was destroyed by Nocturn with few survivors. Sentrakh was taken before or after and heavily modified by The Shadowed One. 17. Nynrans Dweller Vanisher Vengeance This is one of the few MU species to grow as they age, ranging from just below Toa height to towering titans. Their common traits include long, thin wings and horns atop their heads used to channel their psionic subpowers unique to each individual. They originally hailed from Nynrah and are still known to craft there, though members of their species proven to be too violent/not inventive enough were outcast. 18. Odins Lariska The original inhabitants of Odina. Lariska is the only known survivor after she betrayed the rest of her people to the Dark Hunters. 19. Primal Seeker These two are the last survivors of a four-legged race whose island was ravaged by Visorak, and afterwards all but Primal were killed by The Shadowed One. Seeker was recruited as a servant of the Brotherhood of Makuta and escaped the destruction. They are known to be agile and strong. To be reclassified as Rahi Airwatcher Airwatchers' backstory seems to imply he is one of the last of his kind. Perhaps the others were hunted to extinction or killed themselves off due to their own dim-wittedness. Airwatcher possesses wings and a chest launcher, the latter may have been the result of Dark Hunter modification. Poison A species nearly wiped out by Matoran as they were mistaken for unintelligent Rahi. Their poison, which is ejected from their mouths, paralyzes the victim and is lethal within half an hour, though they are not immune. They also possess stunning tails. FAQs 1. Why are Brutaka and Hydraxon classified as Steltans?! In the original topic, Akavakaku proposed a theory that Hydraxon, Axonn, and other members of the Hand were created about the same time as Toa Helryx and later used as templates for the rest of their species. Hydraxon likely never lived on Stelt. Brutaka's backstory mentions he was a "prominent figure" of his society before he was recruited by the Brotherhood and likely spent little time on Stelt as well. Brutaka was also known to have gained a large amount of power after being submerged in Antidermis. Though several members of this classification were known to fight Makuta, they were likely exposed to only trace amounts of Antidermis and the effects were less noticeable. But perhaps in early years the Steltans used this ability to gain dominance over the much stronger Servant and Slave classes. 2. But why can't Hydraxon be put with Axonn and Carapar?! My original list had this pairing, but so many people denied it, saying Hydraxon and Axonn have very few physical characteristics in common and felt like the only excuse was their similar names. So they're separated now. 3. But why can't Hydraxon be put with Trinuma and Mantax?! I really, really don't want to get into this debate again. Simply put, Trinuma's species is confirmed to have large and prominent horns, and these are noticeably lacking on Hydraxon. I see no reason to make allowances to dismiss Hydraxon from this canon detail when he could easily be a Steltan. 4. But not all of "Kalmah's race" have tails! Admittedly, this is pretty much the only obstacle with that huge leap that merged several species into an interesting race. Canonically, they all come from a land ruled by warlords and locked in a civil war. Physically, most of them have claws, tusks, digitigrade legs, and some manner of tail. However, Guardian is noticeably lacking this last trait. It could be he lost his tail in the wars or as a result of Dark Hunter modification. Maybe not all members of this species have tails. Whatever it is, these characters fit too well together in my mind to ignore for one tiny detail. 5. Why does Dweller's species have to live on Nynrah? Because honestly he's the only one that fits. Many of these characters are described to be the last of their species or their island destroyed or in war... Dweller (and the others categorized under him) has very little backstory and what little there is seems close enough to the known inhabitants of Nynrah. 6. Wait, Greg said Krahka was a Rahi and Triglax wasn't! Why are they sapient species when Airwatcher and Poison are not? We still have intelligent Rahi like Keetongu! "Rahi" is a very relative term in Matoran. It literally means "Not Us." There is no clear line between sapient species and Rahi with the exceptions like Airwatcher and Keetongu. This puzzled me and I asked this question in my What is a "Rahi?" topic. Basically the consensus was that it was entirely Matoran-defined. They see a creature and classify it based on its behavior. Krahka commonly shapeshifts into Rahi, while Triglax mimics other sapient beings, so it would be easy to see how a Matoran might mistake Krahka for a Rahi. 7. Where does Jerbraz fit into all of this? Given how little we know about Jerbraz's appearance before he turned invisible, it isn't really reasonable for me to try to figure out which one of these species he fits into. I'll leave that to another topic.
  9. I see your face before my eyes... (Album, too lazy to fix up link) Gotta love the Barraki, right? I've injected more personality into these revamps. Constructive criticism is appreciated, I'll redo them until they're the best they can be. I'll be needing help with reworking Takadox.
  10. Hey all! If any of you have been following my Flickr, you would have known this topic was coming from all the MOC's I've been posting there for the past few days But anyway, I present to you the fruit of my latest MOC project, codename CCBS, or Creepy Creeps from Below the Surface. Or basically, the Barraki but remade in CCBS (pause for inevitable groans). The Barraki have always been my favourite of all the Gen 1 villains, it's no secret. And Takadox will forever remain my favourite G1 character. So I thought it was high time I gave them a complete CCBS overhaul to celebrate that fact. It pretty much started by making a CCBS Takadox, but it soon escalated into me wanting to remake all the warlords in CCBS form. I wanted to keep as close to the original set's appearance as possible, down to replicating the limb lengths and colours in the right places, but doing that only using CCBS parts (aside from the head, weapons and sometimes the feet). A full gallery including alternate views of all models can be found here. So, without further ado, time for some pictures, complete with descriptions taken straight from Flickr: Takadox: Here is my favourite of all the Barraki first of all: Takadox! In some respects he is the hardest of the Barraki to replicate in CCBS, due to the only Dark Blue parts in CCBS being Skull Spider masks and zero Trans-Fluorescent Blue CCBS parts. I still really like how he turned out, even if he now wears Skull Spiders and has a lot of his Dark Blue replaced with Black. Pridak: Here's the second Barraki in the series: Pridak. Out of all the CCBS renditions, Pridak is probably the closest to his original set appearance, given his waist articulated torso translates very well into CCBS. I also tried custom built feet to try and replicate his original feet. I was going to use the original feet but then I saw the Protector feet on my Master Wu Dragon and immediately saw the similarities, so brick built them. Ehlek: Here is the third Barraki: Ehlek! He was originally my first Barraki set. This Ehlek is probably a bit bigger than his original incarnation due to using 2 CCBS bones instead of a Technic liftarm for his body (a technique I'd used on Takadox as well). I was going to use Ehlek's original feet for this, but I didn't have any in my collection so kinda had to settle for Beast feet given I couldn't find a custom solution I liked. Mantax: This is Mantax, who probably has the most unique build of the 6 and thus was a little challenge to get right. If you look closely, the shape of the original build is imitated in CCBS using a blend of Takadox's CCBS build and a 9x9 torso. This is probably one of my favourite of the builds as I think it almost perfectly replicates the original Mantax build. Kalmah: Here is Kalmah, the first of the two Barraki with a more standard humanoid build (or "the Inika build" as I so often see it termed). I have tried to replicate the general shape and colour segregation of the torso in the original set as much as possible here, even if it has resulted in Kalmah perhaps putting on a little bit of extra weight I probably would have put more dark red shells on the sides of the torso, but I ran out of dark red shells as Kalmah relies heavily on dark red in his colour scheme. Carapar: Finally, here's the last of the Barraki: Carapar. He was always the strong and armoured one out of the Barraki, so I made sure that was reflected in his CCBS iteration. The colour is perhaps the most difficult to get right, given that Carapar's marbled olour was uniqque to that set. I eventually settled with a combination of Pearl Gold and Keetorange, the Pearl Gold since it is the closest match to Carapar's head colour, and Keetorange because, well, he featured that colour in the original set. Carapar is also one of the few models I've made to incorporate a Technic function, pushing together two Technic bushes on his claw causes them to open, then the claw snaps shut when you let go. Well, hoped you liked looking at my renditions of Barraki in CCBS. Comments and constructive feedback will be much appreciated, and feel free to pick out your favourites of the bunch and explain why. Hopefully these might garner more interest here than they did on EB
  11. Hello, everybody. Late last year, while playing around with Kalmah, I suddenly sent a squid flying really far with the launcher! Eventually, I figured out how I had done it, and I refined the practice. Now, I've made a video so that you can launch your squids nicely too! Here is the link: Best of luck!
  12. So, the old topic kind of died with little being resolved, but I liked the idea too much to let it go. If you've ever taken a look at BS01's Unnamed Species List, you'll find a ridiculous number of sapient species in the MU. Many of them are the Barraki or members of the OoMN or Dark Hunters, many of which were just waved off as their own species. But as we looked closer, there are many characters with similar physical traits, powers, or histories. Many of the inconsistencies are easily explained by mutations or technology, or simply interspecies variations. Just as Matoran and Skakdi have elemental subspecies, many of these other species could be divided up in new ways. I've read through the old topic again, and I've compiled a new list of species and subspecies based on these suggestions. Please note these are all my own decisions and they are by no means the right ones. I welcome suggestion or debate on any of them, otherwise I wouldn't have made a topic. Canon 1. Makuta Prototypes Darkness Eliminator Shadow Stealer Originally designed by the Great Beings to be keepers of order and creators of the Rahi. The early prototypes were given elemental Shadow and often additional powers, but the versions perfected and created by Mata Nui were also given the 42 Kraata Powers plus a few extras. They have the ability to use Kanohi. A little known fact about them is that they grow far more powerful when exposed to Antidermis, a plausible explanation for their dominance of the other, more powerful species of Stelt. 5. Vortixx Roodaka Conjurer The inventive and intelligent inhabitants of Xia. Lariska The original inhabitants of Odina before they were betrayed by Lariska and destroyed with the sole exception of her. 6. Zyglak An amphibious species with a hatred for Matoran. Their scaly skin is coated with an organic Protodermis destroying disease. They are immune to Pit Mutagen and virtually invulnerable to elemental attacks. Barraki 7. Carapar Axxon Carapar's race was one of the first created in the Matoran Universe, as implied by Axonn's status as an ex-Hand of Artahka member. They are unable to breathe air and are thus confined to the oceans around Zakaz without breathing apparatuses. Each member has been modified by the OoMN, giving them great strength and powerful claws to kill Makuta. They are also able to wear Kanohi. 9. Kalmah A species with the ability to wear Kanohi. They are able to wear Kanohi. 12. Takadox A species with the abilities to hypnotize others and wear Kanohi. Other 13. Airwatcher Airwatchers' backstory seems to imply he is one of the last of his kind. Perhaps the others were hunted to extinction or killed themselves off due to their own dim-wittedness. His classification as a sentient species is questionable, and he could easily be a mislabeled Rahi. Airwatcher possesses wings and a chest launcher, the latter may have been the result of Dark Hunter modification. 14. Amphibax An amphibious species with close relations to Ehlek's species, agile on land and in the sea. They also possess enhanced senses. 15. Botar Botar's Replacement Another race hailing from the Southern Isles, known to be "savage," perhaps meaning more primitive or superstitious than the rest of the universe. This species towers over most others and has the ability to teleport and use Kanohi. 16. Dweller Vanisher Vengeance This is one of the few MU species to grow as they age, ranging from just below Toa height to towering titans. Their common traits include long, thin wings and horns atop their heads used to channel their psionic subpowers unique to each individual. 17. 18. Mimic A species from a distant land that was destroyed in a natural disaster. At least some members of this species possess photographic reflexes. 19. Nocturn Sentrakh A four-armed and powerful species with the ability to regrow lost limbs. They are immune to Pit Mutagen. Their home island was destroyed by Nocturn with few survivors. Sentrakh was taken before or after and heavily modified by The Shadowed One. 20. 21. Poison A species nearly wiped out by Matoran as they were mistaken for violent Rahi. Their poison, which is ejected from their mouths, paralyzes the victim and is lethal within half an hour, though they are not immune. They also possess stunning tails. 22. The Shadowed One Ancient A species from a bleak an icy land engulfed in a civil war. This species possesses limb-like tails and possible eye beams. Perhaps an overlap with Tyrant's species? 23. Tyrant Guardian Lurker The residents of a small island to the south of Odina split between possibly elemental tribes, one of which Tyrant was a leader. Lurker killed another member of his species and was banished from his home. Tyrant left his position to become a Dark Hunter during the Toa/Dark Hunter War. Guardian's tribe was betrayed and he was the only survivor. This species is commonly red and wields natural weapons such as claws, teeth, tusks, and bladed tails, though it is not unknown for them to have elemental affiliations or even basic abilities. Jerbraz, who cannot use Kanohi, and the inhabitants of Nynrah, intelligent crafters, are in there somewhere.
  13. How different did the mutated Ehlek look compared to a normal member of his species. Were his spines his only mutation like his BS01 article implies, or did he undergo other mutations too? All I know is that he was mutated very little compared to the other Barraki, and he grew spines.
  14. Hello, everyone. I've always liked the Barraki, the six antagonists of the Toa Mahri. They all had completely different builds, and different weapons, and in the story line, they were all warlords of different species. I was wondering, what's your favorite Barraki? I myself like Takadox, but that's me. Feel free to let me know of your favorites and comments.
  15. This is an idea I've had in my head for a while now. If you have ever taken a look at BS01's Unnamed Species list, you'll find there's a ridiculous number of sapient species in the MU. Many of them come from the Barraki, OoMN, and Dark Hunters, of which most had their own species. So, I was wondering if there was any potential for overlap? The MU is an interesting place. Toa, Matoran, and Skakdi have elemental subspecies. Perhaps in the others there could be more drastic appearance changes between the elements. For example, Lurker could be a the fire equivalent of, say, Guardian's species. Many of the changes could be accounted for by the mutations and experiments that seem to define Dark Hunters. Despite this, I would not say the Barraki are all one variations of one species. That seems rather unfair for Mata Nui to privilege one species over all the others in the MU. But I suppose the option is open. So, are there any overlaps you can think of? Perhaps Darkness could be of Brutaka's species, or Conjurer could be a Vortixx (advanced technology passed off as magic?), Triglax could be a Krahka (she's not on the list, but I would say she would be at least as intelligent as he is, and his employment might mean they would have little contact, and others would not realize what they are given shapeshifting powers), and Vanisher could be a member of Botar's species (perhaps a little farfetched given his appearance).
  16. I've heard there are files in Voya-Nui Online Game of things like a prototype Barraki. Is this true?
  17. I was digging through my parts today and found both of my Kalmahs in quite bad shape. I looked up at my Kalmah poster, bravely shooting his "squid" at the viewer, and I knew what I was going to make today. My MOCing skills are pretty good, my photography... not so much. Anyways, here he is! Kalmah the Barraki warlord and weaponizer of squid! Kalmah was a fairly cool set because he was bulky and agile at the same time. I tried to keep this feel when building the MOC- giving him an armored, bulky look and still retaining the agile and lithe feel of a squid. Yeah, I gave him extra arms. A lot of the pictures on the Brickshelf folder don't have the arms since they get in the way a lot, and aren't that complex. 18. Hey all, this question has been bugging me ever since the Barraki came out. It was explained by Greg that they all look different because they were chosen from different species, but interestingly enough, they all share one common physical characteristic: Their mandible. Now, I could understand Takadox, and Carapar, and maybe Mantax having those because they go along with the form that they were mutated into, but Kalmah, and Pridak being squid and shark-like respectively. I know that one reason they all have those is because of the sets, but story-wise is there a reason why the Pit mutated all of them to have that particular feature? And are they the only Pit prisoners who have that feature, or did the other escapees develop those too? Thanks!
  19. I don't know what really prompted this, but a few months ago when I was fiddling with music, I made a cover of Creeping In My Soul by Cryoshell. Unfortunately, I can't sing, so I only have two versions of this: with a violin placeholder for vocals, and with no vocals. It's like Karaoke!!!! 20. ^ CLICK THE PHOTO ABOVE TO VIEW THE GALLERY ON MOCPAGES. ^I personally think that Kalmah is better, but I think Ehlek is alright too. After building Kalmah I wanted another, and Ehlek is my favorite Barraki, so I just had to build him. I'm considering revamping the other four (and Nocturn) later, but for now it's just the Squid and the Eel.Feedback is appreciated.
  21. Does anybody have an idea on how the Barraki looked like before the mutation in the Pit? Are there any canonical clues? Or maybe you have your own ideas?
  22. Five out of the six barraki (exluding Ehlek) belonged to a species that could wear and use kanohi. My question is: Which kanohi do you think they would have if they chose to wear masks? Which masks would make sence to each character?
  23. So, quick question pertaining to the Barraki. What happened to those Zyglak that got trapped in a chamber with Takadox, Kalmah, and Mantax? Are they dead now?
  24. So this is my first comedy. Remember, I'm new to this so I'll try my best. If anyone can offer any pointers I would be glad to listen.Chapter 1:*Somewhere in a cave under Mahri Nui*Pridak: Mantax, come over here with that prisoner. Make sure he's... comfortable.*Mantax obeys, dragging a Le Matoran by the foot and sets him in the chair. He then proceeds to grab a roll of duct tape, with which he tapes said Matoran to the chair.*Mantax: 'Ere ya go chap, all nice and comfy. Anything else Pridak (to himself) you psychotic moron.Pridak: That will be all, Mantax, make sure the others do not disturb this interrogation. *he turns to the prisoner* So, is there anything you would like to say before we begin, Mr..... I had hoped you wouldn't have been as stubborn as those other Matoran we had captured but I am afraid I have no choice. Turn on the music!*Selena Gomez's Shake it Up starts playing*Music: Everybody, everybody get out on the floor it can get a little CRAZY when the kick hits the floor. Make a scene, make a scene nobody can ignore don't knock it till you rock it till we can't take it no more.*The Music keeps playing as a horrified look creeps onto Defilak's mask*Defilak: Nooo.... must fight urge! Have fun. *Closes the door leaving Defilak with the music blaring*Defilak: Nooooooooooooooooo! *As Pridak leaves the room he is greeted by the other five Barraki, all struggling with their own day to day tasks.*Pridak: Mata Nui, I'm exhausted. *slumps down on his couch* Kalmah, be a good henchman and go get me a smoothie.Kalmah: Go get it yourself creep. I'm busy.Takadox: No ya ain't. Da boss told you to get him a smootie. Youse best be gettin' to it ya hear?Ehlek: You said smootie!! That's too dern funny!Carapar: Now let's everybody calm down and not let things get out of hand, Kalmah.Kalmah: What did you say to me punk?!Takadox: Hey, don'tcha be callin' my mind slave a punk! Take dat back.Carapar: Mind slave, what going on here Taka.....Takadox: (Using hypnosis) You will get all of us smoothies and pick up da latest Carly Rae Jepsen CD. Be back here within da hour. Now move!Carapar: Yesssss...... master. *stands up and swims out of the cave and heads to the nearest Walmart*All other Barraki: :blink:Pridak: Riight. What about you Mantax, you've been especially quiet tonight.Mantax: Well, now that you mention it I had a most splendid day among the bottom feeders. My quota has been increased to two Ruki fish every five minutes.Kalmah: Lame...Mantax: You want to tussle sir? I can most certainly show you a good one!Kalmah: Bring it on punk!*Kalmah leaps onto Mantax and pins him to the ground. Mantax then summons a school of fish and orders them to attack Kalmah.*Pridak: I knew i should have sprung for that army of Vahki. Could this day possible be any weirder?*A hole is smashed in the wall and the room is filled with Zyglak*Zyglak: We have come...... for your spleens!Pridak: I had to ask.End of Chapter 1
  25. Before he was a hideous fish creature, he was a legendary warlord! This is what I think Pridak looked like before his mutation (and after Mata Nui reverted him back.)http://i45.tinypic.com/2qclc1u.jpgHere's a closeup. The mask was inspired by Dark Knight Rises Bane.http://i48.tinypic.com/34yyxs1.jpgEdit: Images linked - please keep the file size of posted pics below 100 kB!
