  1. "Gathered friends. Listen again to our legend... of the BIONICLE." I wanted to celebrate Mask of Light's 20th. We all know, I'm sure, that it's not the greatest movie out there by a long shot: but on a personal level it's still one with incredible significance to me. It's one HUGE part of my... well, not really childhood, it just slightly missed that, more like teenagerhood? It came along just after I'd started Secondary School (i.e. UK middle-to-high school) and was feeling very self-conscious about the move up there; having something so new and fantastic from my then-favourite fandom to latch onto... I can hardly overstate what a massive help that was in keeping me grounded. Very happy 20th, Mask of Light; and an immense thank-you to all those who made it a reality just when I needed it most.
  2. What is the meaning behind this dialogue in the Mask of Light movie: Makuta: Well played, Toa. Now, I will protect Mata-Nui from you. Takanuva: Protect him? Makuta: Sleep spares him pain. Awake, he suffers. Takanuva: You - are not protecting him! Makuta: My duty is to the Mask of Shadows! How is Makuta "protecting" Mata-Nui from the Toa? How would Mata-Nui suffer if awake? And what does Makuta mean that his duty is to the Kraahkan?
  3. Not sure if this was already known about but apparently someone's selling all these storyboards for the first Bionicle movie on eBay (£15 a pop!) and I mention it hear in case the images of these have not yet been archived. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2003-LEGO-BIONICLE-DTV2-14x8-5-Pencil-Storyboard-Art-SC-61-65-pgs-141-149/303615588276?hash=item46b0e637b4:g:XpcAAOSweoZe8yid
  4. My entry for the BZPower Fanfic Exchange; this story is for ArchAngelleofJustice, who wanted to read about why Jaller and Hahli stopped flirting with each other between 2003 and 2006 (and also about Nobua, who gets a cameo later on - though I had to look up who he was first!). I can't help but wonder if, perhaps, the prompt was supposed to inspire a more jokey story rather than something heavily serious - but the idea most appealed to me as a way to delve deeper into Jaller and Hahli's thoughts and mindsets, which is something I love doing. Plus, there was one particular key thing that I could imagine having a big effect on the two of them and, well... the idea spiralled from there. So even if it's not quite what you were anticipating, ArchAngelle, I hope you enjoy it anyway! ^^ ----- Additional note - sorry if my writing is a bit clumsy; I'm more used to writing individual roleplay posts than whole stories, and my style maybe didn't adapt as neatly as I'd like. That said, it was definitely a fun experience; thanks for giving me a chance to play around in the heads of some of my favourite Matoran! ----- “I don’t much like this, Hahli.” The Ga-Matoran who he addressed raised a single, expressive eyebrow. The statement was so vague, she couldn’t help but think, that Jaller could be referring to just about anything; and yet, she had a feeling that she could get it in one guess if she tried. She didn’t even need to know him as well as she did; the Captain of the Guard had been on edge ever since the Kolhii tournament had wrapped up… and it didn’t take a genius to trace it all back to the mask that sat, now, carefully propped up on his desk. Its glow had dimmed; while the magnificent golden finish still caught the flickering torchlight, it no longer cast out the bright ray that had enveloped Jaller at the stadium, or even the warm glow it had seemed to cast as the Turaga had pored over it. Now it just looked as if it were… a mask like any other. Amazing to think that it held such power, such hope… And even more amazing, that it was the Matoran who she loved so much who had been chosen by it. Not that Hahli couldn’t see why; brave, smart, determined… why wouldn’t it chose him? “I dunno… for a mask, it sure has good taste.” Her tone was light, teasing… just as it always was around Jaller. That was just the kind of relationship they had; while other Matoran might tire of a friendship (or something more) built around joking and flirting, Hahli wouldn’t have traded it for anything. Jaller was too busy for a full romantic commitment; and living on opposite sides of the island made it impractical – though evidently not impossible, according to Macku – to keep up anything of that kind long-term. In contrast, this? The blend of light-heartedness and intimacy… it suited them both. Which was why, for a moment, she was surprised when Jaller whirled on her, his expression taught and even… dare she think angry? He didn’t immediately speak, but his brows were lowered in a glare that gave Hahli pause. Whatever this was, it really was troubling him; and Hahli quickly dropped the teasing attitude to really take stock of her partner’s mood. She’d thought, perhaps naturally, that Jaller was just feeling a bit overwhelmed with the responsibility of it all. This was, after all, a different kind of task than he was used to; hunting all over the island for a mysterious Seventh Toa, rather than having a specific enemy to face, to plan and strategize against… she had imagined he’d just felt like he was in over his head, but would quickly come to terms with it. That was, after all, the Jaller she knew. This, though, was… more than that. Something was genuinely bothering him; and if there was any time to drop the joking and teasing that characterised most of their interactions, it was now. Hopping up from the bed, she crossed to Jaller, took his scowling face gently in blue-armoured hands. “Do you ever…” Jaller shook his head a little, his scowl softening into an expression of… what? Concern? Resignation? He just looked so put-upon by this that Hahli really felt for him. She might not have understood, but that didn’t matter; she would support him anyway. A few moments later, Jaller continued. “Ever feel like you were chosen for something that wasn’t meant for you?” He held up a hand to forestall her immediate answer, clearly more thinking aloud than actually asking anything. “I know a thing or two about Duty; it is the virtue of Ta-Koro, and all. But this isn’t my…” He hesitated, seeming to be on the fence about giving voice to something specific; and then changed his mind, correcting himself and looking away from her. “I mean, doesn’t feel like it’s mine. I know where my Duty lies, and this…” “Maybe Duty isn’t that simple?” Taking his hand, Hahli led the captain back over to his bed. Jaller looked, for just a moment, like he wanted to protest; then simply allowed her. The two Matoran sat there, side by side; Hahli swinging her legs slightly where they overhung the edge, while Jaller remained stiff-backed and upright. When the silence dragged without him answering her, Hahli tried again. “I know it’s not quite the same; but I had a similar feeling when the Turaga chose me for the Kolhii team. I’d never even played Kolhii before, I felt like completely the wrong choice… everyone was really supportive, even Kotu, but I still felt like I was completely the wrong choice.” Despite himself, that got a snort out of Jaller. “Tell that to the fact you kicked our butts.” “Exactly.” Undeterred, Hahli gave him a playful jab in the ribs, then pressed on. “See what I mean? It felt so wrong at first, but clearly it was the right choice. That’s gonna be the case for you too, you’ll see.” “But I’m not--!” Jaller cut himself off, swallowing his outburst with what looked like great difficulty. There was, evidently, something that he wanted to say… and, just as clearly, he didn’t feel it was right or appropriate to do so, and as he looked away from her Hahli felt a slight pang of regret in her heart. Didn’t he fully trust her? Was this the price for the unserious nature of their relationship? “It’ll be okay; you know that, right? We still have each other… nothing’s going to change that, Jaller. I promise.” Finally, she sensed some of the tension starting to leave the Ta-Matoran’s muscles. He didn’t say anything more; but the way he leant back against her, allowing her to support him for a little while instead of relying only upon himself, told Hahli that she’d managed to get through to him. Beneath the teasing, the joking, there was something very genuine between them; and though the moments when it shone through were rare, they were also very precious. *** The morning dawned bright and surprisingly clear; for once, the ever-present smoke that rose from the fortress of fire seemed thin, allowing a cold dawn light to bathe the ancient stones in a colour other than reds and oranges… and, for a Matoran who’d long awaited an opportunity to see more of the island, Jaller found himself unexpectedly reluctant to finish getting ready to leave. The Mask of Light was tucked away neatly in his backpack, his trusty spear was at his side, he’d arranged whatever supplies they might need for the journey… And now, he dawdled uncharacteristically as Takua and Turaga Vakama crossed the main square. Ta-Koro was his home, it was true, and Jaller told himself it was natural not to want to leave it behind for a while… but, when it came down to it, that was far from the reason he was unhappy. He’d been away from his village many times before; leading the backup force for the Kini Nui defence, then helping the other villages stand strong during the Bohrok War, not to even mention numerous scouting missions back before the role of captain had fallen to him. Each time, he’d left the village proudly, his head held high, on a task that he knew was of the utmost importance… On a task that he knew was his own… He still had misgivings about the whole thing. Jaller wanted, more than anything, to scream to the heavens themselves that HE WASN’T THE HERALD, that it was Takua who found the mask, Takua who it had picked, Takua who had earned this duty… and yet, he couldn’t bring himself to say anything. Even last night, when his companion was the one Matoran who he cared about most in the world… he hadn’t been able to trust himself to say anything. He couldn’t… wouldn’t… look like he was trying to squirm out of a duty given to him… no matter that the duty wasn’t even his in the first place. All the same, it weighed heavily upon him. That, and… for the first time, he had someone in Ta-Koro who he wished he didn’t have to leave. A Captain of the Guard couldn’t let his personal feelings get in the way of his duty, it was true, but that didn’t make it exactly easy to say goodbye to Hahli. He hadn’t done so yet, in fact; he was aware of her walking just behind the three of them, but he hadn’t yet decided what he wanted to say to her. There was so much… and yet, also, so little. More than anything, he wished she could come on this quest too… but he couldn’t force that upon her like he had on Takua. Besides, she had her own home and friends and places to be; it wasn’t fair to ask her to come along on a task that not even he knew how long it was going to take, how long he’d be away… Still, a little sigh escaped him. Hahli, it seemed, had developed an ability to read his mind… or maybe she just knew him that well, for her voice spoke up in his ear almost as soon as his thoughts had started to wind down. “Look, don’t get mushy, Jaller. I have no time for a long goodbye.” “I… was just gonna say…” Turning to face her, Jaller abruptly realised that he had no idea what he had been going to say. Staring into those lovely eyes – yellow, though they appeared tinted blue behind the Kaukau’s visor – taking in every feature of her small, armoured form at a glance, he felt more emotions than he could name welling up inside him. Whatever it was he was going to say, he wanted it to be serious, meaningful, to let her know something of how much she meant to him… What slipped out, therefore, was none of those things. “You owe me a rematch on the Kolhii field.” “Well, then.” At the sight of her raised eyebrow, Jaller could have smacked himself. What had that line even been meant to be… rematch on the Kolhii field? Really? If he was honest, Jaller supposed, he’d been thrown by Hahli’s return to their usual banter, had grabbed for something that felt true to that… and had settled upon the most Mata-Nui-awful line that came to mind, apparently. “You’d better hurry back.” Also apparently, Hahli was content to run with that. Placing hands on her hips, she started to saunter off, looking far less troubled by the whole situation than he was… only to pause and shoot a final parting line back over her shoulder. “Because I’ll be practicing.” Several minutes and a brief lecture from Turaga Vakama later, and they were off. Pewku, Takua’s trusty ussal crab, trundled easily over the stone bridge that joined Ta-Koro to the wider island of Mata Nui, carrying the two Matoran on their way; and who knew what lay ahead? Takua was leaning forward, seemingly eager to be off again; and for a couple of moments, Jaller observed his friend. For Takua, adventure was his life, the blood in his veins… being out like this was nothing new to him. While, for Jaller himself… travel called to him in its own way, sure. But everything he truly loved was back in Ta-Koro, now behind them. The sturdy stone walls, the shadows of the volcano, they were his home, and it was never so easy for him to leave as it was for Takua. Even less, now, when he knew Hahli was back there… and despite all his resolve to the contrary, Jaller found himself turning to look back. He half convinced himself he could see a blue shape up high on the battlements, watching them leave… a shape that rapidly became a speck, and then nothing he could make out at all, as Pewku carried them swiftly on. “Hey. You still in there, or…?” Takua’s voice from his side jolted Jaller out of his thoughts. The bridge now, too, was behind them, the three travellers on the verge of entering the twisting paths of the charred forest; and Jaller quickly lifted the Avohkii in front of his face to determine which way it wanted to guide them. Even as Pewku began moving again, the Captain could still feel his friend’s eyes on him. “Yeah… yeah. I just got a funny feeling. Like… I’m not gonna see her again.” He didn’t need to specify the her; his relationship with Hahli was no secret, even if all it ever amounted to publicly was teasing and banter. Takua knew, he was sure. Knew, and was clearly weirded out by the direction this was taking. Rather than answer directly, the chronicler rolled his shoulders in a noncommittal shrug. “Hey, come on. You’ll be back with Hahli before you know it; the wars are over now. Nothing’s going to get in our way with that thing on our side.” He gestured vaguely at the mask, before turning his attention back to their road. “Yeah. Sure.” Not altogether reassured, Jaller nonetheless sat back, putting the thoughts away. As Captain of the Guard, he had great mental discipline; and now was the time to put that to the test. He’d see Hahli again, in Mata Nui’s good timing… and until then, there was no space to mope about. He had a job to do. *** Kini-Nui, some time later. She took the trail down towards the Amaja-Nui in something of a daze. Just a few weeks ago, Hahli would never have imagined treading the sacred ground of the Great Temple all alone; she’d come here just once before, with all her fellow villagers, for the Naming Day Rebuilding Ceremony. And yet… everything that had happened recently was enough to make her head spin. For a shy Matoran who’d never once dreamed of adventure, she’d been dragged clean out of her element and could see no obvious way to go back; ever since Turaga Nokama had chosen her to be Kolhii champion, things had spiralled. Some of it, she would admit to herself, was just the result of being in the wrong place at the wrong time – the attack on Ta-Koro, for one – but beyond that… visiting the other villages for the Kolhii tournament, finding the sacred crystals, placing them in the temple in Ta-Wahi… none of that was exactly accidental on her part. She’d stumbled upon them almost without intention the first time, granted, but her curiosity had led her on. Still, none of that had quite prepared her for being whisked away to the island’s spiritual heart after placing the last of the crystals. She was here, and… she had no idea what she was meant to do now. The horrible creatures that had destroyed Ta-Koro, she had seen heading for the temple just before sunrise; she’d also seen the giant tornado whipping around the area that – she hoped – could only have been the work of Toa Nuva Lewa; and then the eruption of light that, had she been closer, would have been blinding? That had to mean only one thing, right? That Jaller had succeeded in his task, that the Seventh Toa had been found? What she should have done, perhaps, was wait where she was for the Toa to find her when they left the Kini-Nui; but doing so was the last possible thing on Hahli’s mind. If Jaller had been successful, then she wanted to be the first to get there and congratulate him… and maybe, just maybe, tease him about taking so long. It had been… how long since he and Takua had set out? Hahli had honestly lost track. Of course, the island was a big place to search; but such teasing was only in the name of flirting, and they both knew it. She could hardly wait to see him again… and also, it had to be admitted, she was curious to see this Seventh Toa. Where had he or she come from? Had they been hiding under the island the whole time, waiting for the Herald to return their mask? The Ga-Matoran didn’t know, but she was eager to learn all she could about this new addition to the roster of heroes. Maybe Takua would share his notes on the subject with her… Scrambling over the rocky debris that littered the base of the giant Pakari statue – hadn’t that been a Toa head when she’d been here last? – words of greeting for the one she loved were already on her tongue… until the sight before her stopped Hahli in her tracks. Rahkshi lay dismembered all around. Six Toa Nuva stood solemnly by, some with heads bowed, while others watched the proceeding in silence. A seventh, golden-armoured being was walking away from them; but it was hardly the triumphant scene of victory she would have expected from the defeat of Makuta’s minions and the discovery of the island’s latest hero. And then, as the golden being moved to pass her, Hahli’s eyes fell on the limp, yellow-masked form in his arms. “No…” The word was a whisper and it was a scream, all at once. Time seemed to stop moving at all for Hahli as her gaze traced the beloved red-armoured form; one hand rested over his still chest, while the other dangled limply out of the unfamiliar Toa’s grasp. His head, too, lolled lifelessly; while the outlines of her brave captain’s mask looked just the same as ever they had, beneath it his eyes were closed, and none of his features moved. His armour, too, looked just as she remembered it… a little scuffed, maybe, but nothing that indicated he’d died a violent death. Unbidden, her hand reached out in his direction, as if trying to stop the Toa in his path, or to call him over to her, but no words came out. He might not have even noticed her; as the frozen moment seemed to pass, he continued on his way towards the shattered remains of the Suva Kaita, and Hahli felt herself sink to her knees. She couldn’t take it in. Jaller… he… couldn’t really be… Her breath sounded loud in her own ears; her heartlight flickered rapidly, picking up pace as she wrestled with the sight she’d just seen. It wasn’t right… Jaller was supposed to return to her after he’d found the Seventh Toa… they were supposed to have all the time in the world together… not this, not THIS! She didn’t know what to do, didn’t know how to process… it seemed false, unreal; and yet, at the same time, all too real. Ta-Koro’s bravest had fallen. She was only dimly aware that the Toa Nuva seemed to be splitting up for the moment. To each, it seemed, the burden of Jaller’s loss lay heavy on them; Matoran had died before of course, in the Makuta Wars, but that had mostly been before the Toa had arrived. None of them, she numbly supposed, had quite seen a sacrifice like Jaller’s, and each seemed to need their own time to think on it, to come to terms with what had been lost. Hahli wasn’t sure she’d ever come to terms with it. She didn’t sob or cry… in honest truth, she felt too numb to do anything of the sort. A massive hole had just been torn in her heart, and she ached for the fallen captain; but her emotions seemed to have shut themselves down, preventing her from feeling the true extent of grief and loss. It almost felt worse – she felt attached to and detached from what had happened, all at once, and couldn’t process any of it fully. No-one seemed to notice her as, at length, she slowly picked herself up. Her mind still felt horribly blank, as if it were registering the pain in her heart but not able to properly process it or understand it, and Hahli hardly knew what she was doing as she moved to follow in the new Toa’s footsteps. His strides were long, and he had already reached the Suva; but still, she traced his steps, moving numbly through the carnage of battle. None of the other Toa tried to stop her as she reached the steps and began to climb them. Slowly; one, then another, then another… she barely registered them any further than to avoid tripping on them. With agonising slowness, the crest of the shrine came into view. The Toa had been busy in the time it had taken her to reach him. He had cleared away a patch of the stone, making a space for Jaller’s body, and was preparing to place the captain’s prone and maskless form into its final resting place. His kanohi, Hahli saw – that familiar yellow Hau – hung suspended in a pillar of light over the ruined Suva; a memorial tribute to a fallen warrior. This Toa, too, seemed not to have noticed her; he knelt down, starting to lay Jaller’s body into the stone grave he’d prepared. “Wait. Please…” She outstretched a hand in front of her… for what reason, Hahli couldn’t quite fathom. She was just a shy little Matoran; how was she supposed to stop a mighty Toa from doing anything he wanted to? Why should some newcomer to the island even care that this, the bravest of Matoran, was loved by a little nobody like her? And yet, all the same, the Toa paused in his action, turning to face her. “Hahli…” It should have surprised her that he knew her name. It didn’t, really. The pause was all the permission Hahli needed; in less than the space between one breath and another, she was scrambling forward, over the stones that the Toa had moved aside, to reach the red-and-yellow armoured body. Jaller… he looked so vulnerable without his mask, so fragile in death that she was almost afraid to touch him, lest the remains of his form crumble at the slightest contact. She had loved him, had loved him dearly, and looking at him now… Now, she felt her eyes grown moist. She couldn’t think of any words, anything to say… just a deep, deep sense of loss and regret in the core of her being. Slowly, ever so slowly and carefully, she took Jaller’s lifeless hand in her own, clasping it between them. Had the two of them ever just… held hands like this, when he’d been alive? Offhand, she couldn’t remember. Maybe that one first time, back on the beach outside Ga-Koro? In fact, searching back through her memories… she found a distressing lack of genuine moments of warmth between the two of them. Just teasing, flirting, never taking anything seriously… and though it had been the very nature of their relationship, Hahli had always counted on the thought that someday they’d be able to be more than that. Someday had never come. “He saved me, you know.” That was the Toa’s voice; heavy with grief of his own, it nonetheless carried a ring of familiarity to it that – in another time and place – Hahli might have been able to recognise. For now, though, she was so consumed with her own thoughts that it was all she could do to just acknowledge his words. “Without his sacrifice… I probably wouldn’t be here at all. He showed me who I truly was, but…” He swallowed, almost stopped there, then kept going. “Such a price.” And I never got to say goodbye. The thought rose, unbidden, to Hahli’s mind. Their last words together… stupid banter over a Kolhii rematch. No real goodbye – she’d prevented him from giving the sincere farewell that he’d seemed to want to… it was almost like he’d known – just more flirting, joking, not letting it become too serious. Perhaps it had been a defence mechanism for her; but if it was, it had blown up in her face, leaving an empty void in her heart, one that she had no meaningful memories to fill with. Had anything sincere truly ever passed between them? She wished that she could say it had. Jaller, she knew… Jaller would be proud. He’d done his duty, and if he’d died bringing it to be, then… as Captain of the Guard, Hahli supposed, he’d probably always been prepared for this day to come one day. But she’d been so certain that it never would, so convinced that they had all the time in the world… Would it have changed anything, if she’d allowed their relationship to become something sincere? Maybe not… but she’d had the capacity to give him something meaningful; and had always held back. And, now that she was finally realising that… it was far too late. At some length, she stepped back, releasing the Ta-Matoran’s hand. There were so many things she wanted to say to Jaller; but she couldn’t bring herself to say them to the vacant corpse. On impulse, she touched her forehead to Jaller’s; hoping that, somehow, that simple action could reach beyond the grave to convey to him all that she’d wanted the two of them to mean to each other. It was a vain hope; no-one ever came back from death, and Hahli knew that the only thing to do was trust his spirit to Mata Nui. Still, all her emotion was poured into that one single touch. Slowly, then, she stepped away. Inclining her head to indicate to the Toa that she was done. Rather than watch as he again lifted Jaller to his final resting place, Hahli turned instead to look up at the mask where it was suspended, empty eye holes staring vacantly out and across the island. And, though she said and did nothing right then and there… Hahli knew in her heart that she was going to take it down from there, and carry it with her all her days. A tribute to the bravest Matoran who had ever lived… and a reminder of her terrible mistake in failing to appreciate the short time given to them. *** “Halt, little one.” When so little time had passed, but so much seemed to have happened, Hahli could hardly bring herself to be surprised that the giant titan that was half Takua and half Makuta had singled her out. Between her stowaway ride down to Mangaia; appointing herself as Chronicler for the Toa of Light, who she had belatedly recognised as Takua in a new body; climbing back to the surface to summon the Turaga and Matoran on his orders; and now, playing witness to not only this final clash between Light and Darkness, but seeing the first steps being taken to awaken the Great Spirit… Surprise felt like a thing of the past for her. So, she slowed, turning to regard the massive being. With its one glaring eye of Makuta’s juxtaposed against the otherwise more friendly visage of Takanuva, with its mishmash of golden and rusted steel armour, it should have been a fearsome sight; but Hahli found herself unafraid. If anything, she was expecting a reminder from the Takanuva half of the being about making sure she got this down accurately on the Wall of History… What came next, therefore, was a shock to even her. “That mask… needs life.” The Matoran’s gaze dropped to Jaller’s Hau, still clutched in her grasp. True to her earlier intention, she had indeed taken the mask down from his memorial; first, she had set it upon the front of Takanuva’s vehicle, and, when that had been abandoned at the entrance to Makuta’s lair, had carried it with her ever since. Now, she simply stared at it, wondering what the titan could possibly be getting at. Of course it needed life… but the life it needed was Jaller’s, and he was gone for good. Hahli didn’t think she’d quite be able to bear seeing the mask given to some stranger just so that it wouldn’t remain inanimate. Still, when a fusion of a Toa of legend and the most evil being ever known held out its hand to you, you didn’t very well refuse it what it wanted. With some reluctance and trepidation, Hahli placed the kanohi in the being’s giant hand, watched as it set the mask down on the stones beneath their feet. She didn’t know what to expect and, quite honestly, was reluctant to find out. The being stretched out its hand over the mask. Raw power seemed to flow from its form, dancing around its fingertips, coalescing in its palm. Beneath this energy, the surface of the mask shimmered, almost becoming golden as the power – light? Or something else entirely? – flowed down into it. Slowly, it tipped backwards, as if it were no longer lying flat on the ground but as if it were being worn by someone invisible who was, themselves, lying prone. The Ga-Matoran opened her mouth to speak, then closed it again, not certain what to even say… And in the time it took her to do that, the ‘invisible’ body had resolved into one that was clearly visible, and Hahli felt her heart skip a beat. Jaller lay there now; his eyes still closed, his body as unmoving as when she’d last seen it, and Hahli felt a fresh wave of grief threaten to consume her. She didn’t know why the titan had seen fit to recreate the dead form of the Matoran who she loved, but… the thoughts, the emotions choked her. And then— Then— For a moment, Hahli was certain she’d imagined it. She almost thought that, through a vision blurred with emotion, she’d seen the body blink its eyes; but of course, she couldn’t have. Jaller was dead, and the dead didn’t come— A breath, half sigh and half groan, from the direction of the red-armoured body, cut that thought off even before it could finish forming. She didn’t understand it, had no idea what was going on or how the titan had managed it… but Hahli didn’t waste a moment more in reaching the other’s side. Against all likelihood, against all possibility, he was trying to get up… grasping his arm, she helped him climb slowly to his feet. He seemed confused, disoriented – though who could blame him? – but right then, Hahli wasn’t in any kind of place to form a response. There was only one thing she could think of to say, to do. “Jaller…” And she hugged him tightly, in a way she never had before. All the emotion of the last twenty-four hours, ever since she’d seen Takanuva carrying his body, welled up in her and she honestly wanted nothing more than to just cling to him desperately. She could hardly believe it, yet she didn’t want to risk not believing in case that somehow made it not real anymore; and if she didn’t have any flirting, teasing comments to offer him? That was because she now knew he meant indescribably more to her than they could ever convey. And if Jaller wasn’t exactly returning the hug so much as just hanging off her, letting her support him? She could live with that, too. Whatever they had once had, whatever they had once been… it was different now. That difference, she assumed, would become clear; but until then, all she knew was that she wanted to stay as close to Jaller as she could. In time, they would see. In time. *** Sand was kicked up beneath his feet as Jaller trod a path along the familiar golden beach of Ta-Wahi. Familiar… and yet, unfamiliar, all at once. With all that had happened, it felt as though a lifetime had passed since he’d last stood on these shores; and maybe, in a sense, it had. The captain wasn’t sure he quite grasped the details of what Takutanuva had done for him even now, after Takua had filled him in… was he, then, back in his old body? Or had a new form been created for him? If he went back and moved those stones at Kini-Nui, would he find his old one still there? It wasn’t a theory Jaller much wanted to test. It certainly felt, though, like he was seeing the world through a new pair of eyes. That might have been figurative or literal; Jaller honestly couldn’t say which. But he did know one thing; he’d been dead, and now he wasn’t. And that… Was a Karzahni of a lot to take in. Further down the beach, he could see the Toa Nuva gathering. Turaga Vakama had promised them that, at last, he would reveal many of the mysteries surrounding the island of Mata Nui, and would tell them the truth of the underground city that Takua had discovered in the wake of Makuta’s defeat. It should have been a thrilling time, of discovery, of moving on to find where their true destinies lay… And yet. Jaller deliberately stayed away from the small gathering, preferring to remain lost in his own thoughts. As momentous as the occasion was, it was still overshadowed by the many troubled thoughts that weighed upon his mind, and he wasn’t quite prepared to move on with that future until he’d at least straightened a few things out. He’d died. Jaller remembered that as clearly as anything. Throwing himself onto the Rahkshi’s staff to protect Takua; feeling the awful, crippling fear overwhelm his heart; the detached sensation of just knowing that he was about to die… he didn’t want to dwell long on them, but the fact remained that they were inescapably etched in his memory. Jaller had been prepared to die in the line of duty, many times before; but never before had it actually happened. And now, knowing how it felt, would he ever be prepared to do so again? And what kind of guard captain would he be if he wasn’t? He remembered, too, his return to life. It was fuzzy, indistinct, in much the same way as waking up from a long sleep; he’d first been aware that he felt cold, that his body was stiff and achy… and then, before anything else, of Hahli grasping him and clinging to him desperately. Hahli… Looking back over his shoulder, Jaller could just make out her form, sitting with the Toa Nuva and Turaga. There was another piece of his life that didn’t quite feel like it fit back into place in his new perspective on the world. He didn’t love her any less than he had before, of course, yet at the same time… something was different. After he’d been revived, they’d barely had chance to exchange more than a couple of words; between seeing Takutanuva get crushed, being herded by Turaga Vakama onto their respective spots of the Three Virtues symbol, and Takua’s discovery of Metru Nui, there had simply been too much happening. But that was the way things had so often been in their relationship. So why did this feel so different? Even now, he still hadn’t had chance to sit down with Hahli and discuss anything. She’d been kept busy in her new role as Chronicler – and a more deserving Matoran, for the post Takua had vacated, Jaller couldn’t imagine – and he’d had far too much on his mind to seek her out. He wanted to get his own thoughts straightened out, in privacy, before he talked them through with anyone else. Even her. He represented Duty, Turaga Vakama had said. But even Duty needed time to come to grips with everything. His whole perspective on the world had been forcibly shifted and, while he didn’t really expect anyone else to understand… it was important to him that he came to terms with it in good time. The problem was that he didn’t know where to start; it was just too much to take in. There was a reason, Jaller figured, that the dead didn’t usually came back – and that was because the memories of that death were incredibly hard to deal with. And here he was, the weird exception to that. He just couldn’t quite process it. His feet continued to scuff through the sand as he walked, his path unplanned, his direction undetermined. He was just moving idly, with no thought to spare for where he was actually going; his mind was spinning in circles, like an out-of-control ussal cart. Everything seemed, from his perspective, to have changed, and it was hard even for one with his legendary discipline, to focus on any one thing for long enough to work it out fully. But he could at least try. First of all… his duty. It was the thing Jaller always came back to, the very core of who he was; and yet, looking at it now, he felt as though he hardly recognised it. He’d literally died in the line of duty; did that affect it, for him, in any way? It could seem, almost, as if he’d fulfilled his duty and his destiny in that moment, in dying so that the Seventh Toa could be born; and, if that was the case? Then what did the fact that he was now back mean for that? Was his duty just the same as always? Or, now that his destiny had played itself out, and subsequently been ‘rebooted’, did he have a different duty altogether? Had destiny accounted for the fact that he’d be brought back to life, or had Takutanuva deliberately gone against what destiny had established by returning him? And if the latter… what did that mean for him now? Was he even still Captain of the Guard? Was he still worthy of that post? That was another thing Jaller found himself struggling with. In the past, sure, he’d been willing to die in the line of duty; but there was a difference between being prepared for that to happen and it actually happening. Recollecting his final moments still left Jaller cold, and he had to face the very real possibility that, put in a situation where he once again came face to face with his own mortality, he might just… freeze up in the face of such debilitating memories. And in that case, was he even fit to lead? How could he possibly ask his soldiers to risk their own lives, when the prospect of doing so himself might stop him cold? Even if Vakama reassured him a hundred times that there would be no such need for an organised guard on Metru Nui, Jaller wasn’t going to be lax when it came to considering it. No such thing as too much security, especially in a completely unknown land. But if he wasn’t fit to lead the guard, then…? He shook his head. Questions upon questions that he had no answers for; and that he nonetheless had to work out on his own, because no-one else on Mata Nui had ever been through something like this. It was with some surprise that Jaller noticed his path had led him back to the ruins of Ta-Koro. Had only a week or so passed since he and Takua had ridden out of the fortress’ gates, confident that nothing could possibly go wrong on their quest? It had never once crossed either of their minds that there simply might be no Ta-Koro for them to return to afterwards… and though Jaller felt a pang for what had been lost, it was a far more detached feeling than he might have expected. His home was gone… but when everyone on the island was on the verge of leaving their homes to head to a completely new land anyway, that seemed to have much less significance. Besides, the old guard-house, the one on this side of the stone bridge, remained standing; its interior rooms had been left abandoned during the reconstruction of Ta-Koro after the Bohrok War, but never completely dismantled, and the Ta-Matoran ventured inside. The place where he’d spent many of his hours during the Makuta Wars, strategizing and planning and preparing for the inevitable day when the Makuta’s forces would try to overrun them completely. Seen from the other side of having died… it all felt like so long ago now. He kept on coming back to that one thought. He had, perhaps, lost track of how long he’d been standing there, lost in such musings. It was only the sound of his name being called, by a most familiar voice, that brought Jaller back to the present. Tucking away the remaining strands of thought that he still had yet to resolve, the captain stepped out of his old strategy room, raised a hand in greeting. “Right here, Hahli.” And there… was another aspect of his life that he needed to think through seriously. “I didn’t expect you to be along so soon. The Turaga’s stories are over already?” “It’s been two hours, Jaller.” Shaking her head slightly, Hahli stepped to his side, and moved to intertwine her fingers with his own. To Jaller, the contact felt more awkward than it would have before; but nonetheless, he didn’t resist her delicate touch. “Today’s tales are done, though there will be many more days’ worth to come. But…” She tilted her head slightly, regarding him. “What are you doing all the way out here?” “Thinking, mostly.” The answer was returned instantly. It was the truth, after all; and while he didn’t feel like he wanted to go into great detail yet, Jaller also felt as though he had nothing particular to hide. It was natural, after all that had happened, that his mind would be busy. “I just needed some time to myself, before we all start work on the boats.” “Thinking? Sounds dangerous.” Though Hahli nudged him gently, though her tone was as lightly teasing as it ever had been… neither Matoran quite seemed fooled by it. Hahli shuffled her feet, looking like she wanted to say more but not quite knowing what, while Jaller couldn’t quite bring himself to reciprocate with their traditional flirting banter. What had, previously, always just been their way with each other felt unnatural now, empty and forced. And even as Jaller summoned a grin in reply, he had to admit he wasn’t quite sure where that left them. He wasn’t sure where he stood with anything right now; Hahli least of all. What they’d been, what they had… the occurrence of his death seemed to hang like a shadow over all of it, and it felt wrong to lead her on without knowing how that affected… them. “Listen, Hahli…” As she turned to him, expectant, Jaller realised that whatever he was about to say was unlikely to be the same as what she was hoping to hear. He cleared his throat awkwardly, before trying again. “We’re both going to be busy over these next few days. So much has happened, so much is going to keep on happening… we’re not going to have much time to spend together.” “So… you’re saying…” Hahli frowned. She seemed to be of the impression that he was going somewhere with this; though, if he was, Jaller couldn’t have said where. He didn’t want to break anything off with her, but he also couldn’t just keep pretending like nothing had changed. He rubbed the back of his head, trying to piece together what he wanted to say – and unintentionally leaving it wide open for Hahli to take a guess of her own. “You’re saying we should make the most of the time we have together before that?” It wasn’t quite what Jaller had been leading to; but he found himself unable to think of anything better to say to correct her. “Sure. Let’s go with that.” *** She probably shouldn’t be surprised by this development, Macku reckoned. Her relationship with Hewkii was, after all, no big secret. While romance between Matoran wasn’t exactly frowned upon, it was also regarded by many as an unnecessary complication; for most of her brethren, the Three Virtues were the core of everything. As many in the village contributed their own skills to work, from the flax-weaver to the rope-maker to the shipwright, so Unity was exemplified. Their dedication to all that they did represented their Duty. And Destiny… that was harder to pinpoint, for the Ga-Matoran, but still a crucial part of everyday life. Their bond of sisterhood was just one further indication of Unity; and was all that many felt they needed. Relationships based around emotions such as romance were uncommon; to most, they seemed to fall outside the realm of living by the Virtues. Macku rather thought otherwise – what greater Unity was there, after all, than the bond she and Hewkii shared? Their commitment to each other could be taken as an additional Duty with which to honour the Great Spirit; and Destiny was sure a lot more enjoyable when you had someone special to share it with at the end of the day. Still, such things were uncommon… so it really could be no surprise to Macku if she found herself as the go-to expert on the subject. Behind her blue Huna, she struck a smile for Hahli. Her Kolhii teammate had been troubled by something for a few days now, Macku had noticed, but she’d never quite found the opportunity to say anything to her. As the inhabitants of Mata Nui had been hard at work building boats for their journey over the Silver Sea, all of the Ga-Matoran found their expertise being called on frequently as those from the other villages, who had no seagoing experience to speak of, sought their advice. Macku herself wasn’t even a shipbuilder by trade, but she knew a thing or two about handling boats; so she, too, had been rushed off her feet. It was quite a relief, then, to have a quiet moment mostly to herself again. Much of the work on the boats had been completed; and while Marka the shipwright was still busy overseeing the final details, most of her fellow Ga-Matoran had retired from the scene for a while, as members of the other tribes put the finishing touches to their work. Macku had actually been planning to seek out Hahli for herself, just to see if everything was alright… but it turned out she hadn’t needed to. Hahli seemed to have had much the same idea. Now, she sat subdued upon an upturned bucket that had been used to carry materials to and from the shipbuilding site. Macku, leaning against one of the few trees in this part of the island that hadn’t been stripped bare for the materials it could provide, watched her shrewdly, but kept her thoughts to herself for the moment. Whatever Hahli wanted to say, she expected it would come out in its own time, not from any prodding on her part. A little longer passed, before Hahli seemed to decide on exactly what she wanted to ask. “It’s… Jaller.” Of course it was. Hahli’s relationship with the Captain of the Ta-Koro Guard was no secret; so, when she’d come asking for some advice, Macku had easily guessed who it was they were going to be talking about. For herself, the athlete had never been Jaller’s biggest fan – he was too stuffy, and tended to treat everyone as though they were soldiers in his guard, whether they liked it or not – but she respected that Hahli saw something in him that she didn’t. Her friend continued to elaborate. “I know I shouldn’t be surprised, after all he’s been through. But he’s distant now… he’ll spend time with me, if I ask, but I don’t think his heart is in it anymore. We used to, well… you know…” “Flirt all the time?” Macku supplied with a slightly raised eyebrow. It had been a curious way to conduct a relationship – though it certainly had helped to bring Hahli out of her shell, for the first time in memory – but she also supposed that she had no grounds on which to judge… her relationship with Hewkii, after all, had started with her and Kotu playing pranks on him rather relentlessly (and, in her case, unsubtly), and had only slowly grown from that into something serious. “Yeah. That.” Hahli looked a little abashed at being so blatantly called out; but she pressed on anyway. “It just feels awkward now, though. Not just because he doesn’t reciprocate anymore, but… it’s not really sustainable for a relationship, is it? I mean, you and Hewkii, you do more than flirt aimlessly all the time, don’t you?” “Oh, you bet we do.” A grin touched Macku’s face for a moment, before becoming serious again. “It’s not just that though, is it? You’re really troubled by something.” Hahli looked as though she was tempted to deny it; then, her defences crumbled. “It’s… he died, Macku.” Her yellow-eyed gaze bored into Macku’s own. “I thought I’d lost him forever… and when I looked back on the times we’d shared and could only see moments of dumb flirting, nothing that meant anything, it was almost too much to bear. It was like I’d wasted our time together. If we’re going to pick up our relationship again, I want it to be something meaningful this time. Something that, if anything happens to either of us, we’ll have something that was worth looking back on.” “Hahli…” Okay, that was heavier than Macku had been expecting. Perhaps she shouldn’t have been surprised; she didn’t know any details, but the whole island had heard of Jaller’s sacrifice at least in passing. And while Macku couldn’t exactly relate to that – while she’d come close to losing Hewkii once, during the infamous sickness of Po-Koro, it had never actually happened; she couldn’t imagine it, and she honestly didn’t much want to, either – it was no wonder that Hahli was struggling. “Look… I appreciate you coming to me for advice; but this is really something you and Jaller need to talk about between you. I can’t tell you how he feels about this, or what he’ll want to do.” “I know that.” Hahli rarely ever sounded impatient, but there seemed to be the barest touch of that clinging to her tone now. “And I would… if he’d even talk to me much now. I know he’s busy with work on the boats; but I even invited him along to hear the Turaga’s stories with me the other day, and all we managed the whole time was small talk together. I don’t know if I should push him to talk to me more seriously, or…?” “Talking helps.” Macku nodded thoughtfully. It was, indeed, always good advice to talk through any problems in a relationship – her and Hewkii’s seemed to be mostly plain sailing on that count (perhaps a bad choice of words, as Hewkii couldn’t stand water), but even they’d had their moments. However, a second thought occurred to her, too. “But sometimes... you might just need to let him have some time.” At Hahli’s quizzical expression, Macku continued. “Like you said, he’s literally been to death and back… and I can’t speak from experience, but that probably gives a guy a whole lot to come to terms with. It’s easy for you, having lost him and got him back again, to want to pick up right from where you left things; but look at it from his perspective for a moment. He’s been through an experience that he probably doesn’t expect you to understand, and doesn’t want to burden you with.” “I could offer to listen to him? I don’t mind hearing…” “You could… but you might wind up hearing exactly what it felt like for him to die. I don’t know about you, but I’d struggle with it if Hewkii was giving me a blow-by-blow account of experiencing death, even if he was alive again now.” At Hahli’s resolute expression, Macku shrugged a little. “I mean, you do you, I guess. But I think the best thing to do is give him some space; let him know that you’ll still be here for him whenever he’s ready to talk, but that you’ll also respect that he maybe needs time to sort through it all himself before he comes to you.” It probably wasn’t what Hahli had wanted to hear; Macku rather suspected that her friend had come to her hoping for an instant resolution… and wait until Jaller’s ready certainly wasn’t that. Macku herself knew for a fact how hard it could be to just hold back when the one she loved needed some space – it had happened between her and Hewkii before, and doubtless would again eventually – but just because it wasn’t easy didn’t change that it was probably the best thing to do. “Mm.” Hahli’s response was incredibly noncommittal, and Macku wasn’t sure whether that meant the other had accepted or rejected her advice. “I’m not saying it’s going to be easy. If anyone knows that, it’s me… A way back now, when I still had to sneak out of Ga-Koro to spend time with him, I found Hewkii with a lot on his mind that he didn’t want to share with me. I could have followed the advice I’m giving you now; but instead, I badgered him over and over to talk about it, to let me in on the secret… I wouldn’t let it go. It kind of soured our relationship for a while.” It hadn’t lasted, of course; neither of them had been able to stand things being frosty between them and, when they’d approached the matter again, Macku had been hasty in apologising. In time, Hewkii had revealed that Po-Koro as a whole had been going through a bad spot of Rahi attacks at the time, and he had wanted to keep her from getting caught up in the trouble, so it wasn’t exactly like Hahli’s case here… but Macku thought that her advice was sound. Hahli seemed to be pondering this; behind her mask, Macku thought she could detect the hints of a frown on her friend’s features, but any specific thoughts went unknown to her. The athlete tapped her fingers together rhythmically, mostly for the sake of occupying herself while she gave Hahli a few moments to formulate a response. “I guess you know best.” She didn’t sound entirely convinced, and Macku bit back a sigh. Maybe the reason most of her fellow Matoran weren’t interested in talking relationships was that no-one would heed sound advice until they found it out for themselves… but hadn’t she been the same, back in the day, after all? Turaga Nokama had tried to offer her advice on occasion and Macku, secure in her own confidence, hadn’t listened much. When it came to talking with the one you loved, maybe there really was no better teacher than personal experience. Rather than express any frustration, Macku simply shrugged. “Maybe I do; but you know Jaller best.” She wasn’t even going to argue the point; partly because she already knew that wouldn’t be the way to get agreement out of the other, and partly because… for as much as good advice could be universal, it also depended a lot on the couple. “I can only give suggestions – what works for Hewkii and me might not for you. Take a look at what you know about Jaller; if my advice matches, use it. If not, well…” She punctuated with a small shrug. “I’m not going to tell you you’re wrong.” That seemed to please Hahli more. Macku wondered, for a moment, if she hadn’t just unwittingly paved the way for Jaller to be subjected to the never-ending barrage of questions about whether or not he wanted to talk that she’d thrust on Hewkii that one time… but it really wasn’t any of her business. In any case, if the two of them had come out of that okay in the end, then surely Hahli and Jaller would, too, and… well, it seemed likely to Macku that Hahli would approach the matter with just a little more tact than that. “Thanks, Macku.” Hahli hopped up from her seat, looking decidedly happier than she had at the beginning of their conversation… such as it had been. While she was great at giving tips for sports, like canoe racing or Kolhii, not even being in a successful relationship herself made Macku really feel qualified to offer romantic advice. She was an athlete, not a counsellor, and she rather felt like that showed. But she’d at least got Hahli looking at the situation from a different perspective, so that had to count for something. In fact, the new chronicler seemed positively cheerful again now. “We’ll figure it out somehow; you’ll see.” *** At long last, the shores of Metru Nui rose into view. For many hours, the glistening spires of the island city had been visible in the far distance; far away and yet tantalisingly close, all at once. For much of that time, as the silver sea swept by beneath them, Hahli had been hard at work, organising all the notes she’d carved based upon the Turaga’s stories and sharing bits of one tale or another with her curious fellow passengers when they asked, but… even so, her mind had only half been upon her task. The other half was occupied by her anticipation. Almost every few minutes, the new chronicler would sneak a glance ahead, at the slowly rising skyline that belonged to the towering metropolis she had heard so much about. A home from so many, many years ago that no-one present – save for the Turaga – could remember… and while Hahli knew that the place was going to be little more than a ruined shell, which would need a lot of work before it could truly be habitable again… Could anyone blame her for being excited? This expectancy had even, if she was completely honest, put most thoughts of her situation with Jaller out of her mind. Of course, she still wanted to talk to him, wanted to understand how he felt, and all… but the opportunity simply hadn’t presented itself. It had been the very evening of her consultation with Macku that the announcement had been given that all work on the boats was completed, and that they would set sail first thing in the morning; and every Matoran who wasn’t of the fire or earth tribes had hurried back to their homes to gather any possessions that they wanted to bring with them. For herself, Hahli hadn’t had a whole lot to fetch. Her kolhii stick, perhaps, and a couple of more personal items… she’d planned on rushing back to the Amaja Circle to catch Jaller that very evening, but it wasn’t to be; she’d been roped in to help her fellow villagers pack – Nixie, in particular, had armfuls of star charts and had absolutely refused to leave her precious telescope behind – and, by the time morning had rolled around, everyone had been far too busy for her to be seeking any personal time. She kind of wished she and Jaller had at least ended up on the same boat; this was the kind of moment that would have been perfect to share together. But… At least she knew, now, how she wanted to approach him when they next did get a moment together. No longer content to simply sit still, not now that they were so close to landing, Hahli packed up her stone tablets full of stories. Tucking her chronicler’s staff under one arm, the water villager carefully picked her way between the rows of still-seated Matoran, making her way towards the boat’s bow. It didn’t much surprise her to find that she wasn’t alone; an Onu-Matoran wearing a purple Hau was eagerly leaning out over the bow point, as if that little extra distance would speed their boat along faster. He didn’t seem to notice her arrival; and Hahli, who didn’t recognise him personally, had other things on her mind than conversation. The city was growing closer all the time; and, to both the left and the right, Hahli could see other Matoran vessels cutting their way through the liquid protodermis. Keen eyes picked out Jaller standing proudly at the prow of another boat to her right, looking every bit the captain that he was, and Hahli gave a wave in his direction. For a moment, he didn’t seem to notice her, either; then, his gaze drifted across, and he gave a small nod in her direction. Hahli’s heart swelled at even that little interaction and, more satisfied than she had been before, she settled in beside the Onu-Matoran to wait for the landing. The wait was, indeed, not much longer; within the span of maybe twenty minutes, the boat at the lead of the formation had come to rest at the shoreline, with hers following suit in a matter of minutes. The Ga-Matoran could see a group of unusual Rahkshi-faced beings, who she supposed had to be the Rahaga, rushing to greet the Turaga, helping to pull their boats ashore, while the villagers from the other boats managed themselves. Her Onu- companion, who had taken half a moment while they were landing to introduce himself as Nobua, made point of being the first Matoran out of their own boat; he struggled for a few moments to heave the vessel up the shore, before Hahli and some of her fellow experienced Ga-Matoran moved to give him a hand. Everything was busy, bustling with Matoran moving every which way as they beached the boats, disembarked and began unloading, mostly managing to get under each other’s feet a lot. Unity was not particularly obvious on display here, today, but no-one seemed to mind; everyone, Hahli suspected, was simply reeling from being in a location so foreign to them all. Foreign… and yet very familiar. In the middle of all the business and bustle, the chronicler slowly came to a stop. Though she had no personal memories of the ruined cityscape stretched out before them, it all felt so very… very… like she really did know it. There were no memories, but such a sense of familiarity – of homeliness, even as battered as everything was – that took her breath away. The only word Hahli could find for it was… Magical. Matoran were still moving this way and that in the scene of barely controlled chaos; but for a moment, for Hahli, everything seemed to still. Lowering her gaze from the skyline, she had just happened to catch sight of something through the crowd; a very familiar pair of eyes had caught her gaze, for just the barest of moments, from behind an equally familiar yellow Hau… and, whether that moment had been intentional or not, Hahli decided to seize on her opportunity. If it was now or never… then she chose now. Carefully, she began to push her way through the crowd. ----- (Continued in the post below because the post cut off here for some reason!) -----
  5. Hi, guys! Do you know what’s special about today. Well, I’ll tell you: It’s the 15th anniversary of a Bionicle direct-to-video movie called Bionicle: Mask of Light? It came out on September 16, 2003. I know that I have this topic: http://www.bzpower.com/board/topic/26629-happy-15th-anniversary-mask-of-light-storyline-late-2003/?do=findComment&comment=1156304 , But that topic is about the summer 2003 set wave in general. This topic is about the movie itself only. To celebrate, let me tell you the plot in the movie. It is about two short bio-mechanical guys called Matoran, Takua and Jaller, being sent on a quest to find a heroic warrior called a Toa of Light that can save their home island from a dark and evil being called the Makuta. Takua and Jaller must survive dangerous threats, like Makuta's snake-like sons, the Rahkshi. Things get easier when there are other six heroes called the Toa Nuva to help Takua and Jaller on their journey. Anyway, the movie is based on the summer 2003 set wave (well, most of it because there are also the comics). There is a novel based on the movie. There is also a video game called Bionicle: The Game sort of based on the movie. I watched and liked the movie. It was epic, and I love the fight scenes the most! I also love the scene with Takutanuva. I love the soundtrack as well. My favorite characters in the movies are Tahu, Onua, Takanuva, and Makuta. The movie won a few awards. Plus, the movie got two prequels in 2004 and 2005 and a sequel in 2009. The movie is also the first Lego direct-to-video movie and the first real Lego medium in general. It is 3-D animated, and the characters in there look realistic to look like cyborgs that they are while still looking like their sets. There are a few inaccuracies, though, like the eye colors, and it’s weird some of the common masks in the story are common (ex: the Mask of Mind Control) while the others are exclusive to one person (ex: the Mask of Strength) and some of those are not seen at all (ex: the Mask of X-Ray Vision). However, I like the graphics in there, anyway. Man, the Rahkshi and Makuta are scary and menacing. The movie, along with the prequels, is made by Miramax while the sequel is made by Tinseltown Toons and Universal for some reason. I remember buying the DVD and watching the movie on the day the movie was released. Anyway, what are your favorite parts of the movie, and how would you celebrate the movie’s anniversary? For me, well, I would rewatch the movie to celebrate. Also anyway, happy 15th anniversary, movie! Man, it was so long ago!
  6. Hi, guys! I know that Bionicle had ended two years ago sadly, but let’s be happy about Bionicle for something else. You see, this year, 2018, is the 15th anniversary of Bionicle’s late 2003 storyline, which involved thr Mask of Light. I know that this year doesn't have anything Bionicle-related (well, there is this set piece that has the picture of the island of Mata Nui with its name in Matoran, and the piece is in that new The Lego Ninjago Movie set with the docks in this year), but let’s celebrate the 15th anniversary of the 2003 storyline. That would enlighten you more. Let me tell you the late 2003 storyline: The storyline starts with two Ta-Matoran, Takua and Jaller, preparing for a Kohlii tournament, but Takua was sightseeing and Jaller had to go after him. When Takua was exploring a cavern under their home village called Ta-Koro, he found a certain rock with carvings, and when he accidentally threw it in the lava, the rock broke and a new Great Kanohi mask came out of the the rock. When the Matoran went to their tournament and then sadly lost to a team of Ga-Matoran, Hahli and Macku, Takua accidentally showed the mask to the crowd in the tournament, including the Ta-Matoran, Ga-Matoran, Po-Matoran, three Turaga named Vakama, Nokama, and Onewa, and three Toa names Tahu, Gali, and Pohatu. Vakama and Nokama revealed that this new mask is the legendary Mask of Light, and it would lead the one Matoran who found it to the legendary seventh Toa on the island (there are six Toa, who are Tahu, Gali, Lewa, Kopaka, Pohatu, and Onua, and they formed a team called the Toa Nuva). This Toa is said to be the Toa of Light who could defeat their villainous archenemy called the Makuta. Tahu thought that Jaller found the mask and Takua was too nervous to tell the truth, so everybody thought that Jaller is the herald for the mask. When Jaller began his journey to go find the 7th Toa by using the mask to guide him, Takua wanted to be with him to help him out along the way, and he had a put Ussal crab named Pewku to come with them. Hahli remained in Ta-Koro. Meanwhile, the Makuta, having regained his strength after the Toa Nuva, who were normal versions of themselves called the Toa Mata during the time, defeated him in the 2001 storyline, sensed that Jaller and Takua are doing their journey, so he created and unleashed three of his six new powerful and monstrous minions with magical powers called the Rahkshi, which are suits of armor piloted by magical slug-like creatures called the Kraata, which Makuta also created, to go stop them. The Rahkshi have snake-like heads, are armed with magical double-sided staffs that use their powers, and can fly. Each one of the Rahkshi has its own colors and power. The Rahkshi are also called the sons of Makuta. The first ones that Makuta unleashed are a Levahk, the green Rahkshi that has Poison powers, a Panrahk brown and Fragmentation, and a Guurahk blue and Disintegration. The Rahkshi went to Ta-Koro to attack it. Tahu and Gali tried to stop them, but they are too much to handle, so they and their people who were in Ta-Koro got out of there while the Rahkshi destroyed the village. The Levahk scratched Tahu on the face along the way, and Tahu’s secondary Kanohi Nuva masks got destroyed when the village was sinking into the lava. Tahu was upset about all of this. Gali suggested regroup all six Toa Nuva to stop the Rahkshi from finding Jaller and Takua. During Jaller and Takua’s journey, they met Lewa, who learned about the destruction of Ta-Koro. Jaller was upset about it, but the Matoran continued their journey. When they met Kopaka, Kopaka’s village called Ko-Koro got attacked by the three Rahkshi who found the Matoran and then attacked the three. However, Kopaka defeated the Rahkshi by freezing them into statues. Makuta unleashed three more Rahkshi, which are a red one called a Turahk, which has Fear powers, a Kurahk white and Anger, and a Vorahk with Hunger powers. Makuta also scared Takua so much that Takua decided to quit following Jaller, separating them. When Takua arrived to another village called Onu-Koro, where he met Pohatu and Onua, the village was attacked by the second three Rahkshi. While the Toa Nuva are battling those Rahkshi, The Kurahk magically cursed Tahu into attacking Gali angrily, but Kopaka stopped him by freezing him. The battle caused a whole cave that was above the village to be destroyed along with Onu-Koro. After Lewa warn Takua warn Jaller about the Rahkshi, Takua found Jaller and warned him that the Rahkshi are looking for the herald rather than the Mask. The Toa Nuva had to cure Tahu from the Kurahk’s curse and Levahk’s deadly poison to save Tahu from them. The scratch is gone when it happened as well. The Toa Nuva later on battled the Rahkshi again many times. First fighting the Rahkshi individually and then the Rahkshi’s fusions called the Rahkshi Kaita, where each three of the Rahkshi combined into a more powerful creature that can use their powers and have new ones. Along the way, they learned about the Kraata, including the fact that they are the ones that created the Infected Kanohi in the 2001 storyline. Plus, they encountered special Kraata called Shadow Kraata, which are purple and the seventh and most powerful stage of Kraata. The Toa got rid of one that created new Infected masks that mind-controlled some Matoran. The Matoran are saved after that Kraata was taken care of. When Takua and Jaller arrived to their destination, where was a temple called Kini-Nui, the Mask of Light’s power was carving something on the temple, but all six of the Rahkshi came back and started attacking the Matoran. Takua then told Jaller that he is the true herald before they got trapped by the Rahkshi. However, the Toa came to their rescue and fought and defeated the Rahkshi. The Turahk was still not defeated, though, as it tried to use its Fear powers to kill Takua, but Jaller got in the way and got killed by it instead. Takua was sad to see that, and then he put on the Mask to turn into the 7th Toa, and Takua changed his name to Takanuva. He defeated the Turahk and finishing the carving, which was Takua’s mask to show that Takua was the true herald the whole time. Takanuva was still sad about Jaller’s death, but he had to do what has to be done, which is to defeat Makuta to make him pay for what he had done. The Toa Nuva made Takanuva a flying vehicle called the Ussalnui, which Takanuva used to go to Makuta’s lair, which Makuta was. When Takanuva arrived to the lair, he had Hahli, who snuck in the vehicle, to gather the everyone on the island in the lair. When Takanuva found Makuta, Makuta challenged him to a Kohlii match to do a battle with him. During the battle, Hahli brought the people to the lair. Takanuva weakened Makuta, but Makuta was still standing. However, Takanuva jumped onto Makuta’s face and started removing Makuta’s mask, which Makuta didn’t like. Both accidentally fell into Makuta’s pool that has a magical substance called Energized Protodermis, the very thing that turned the Toa Mata into the Toa Nuva, and then when they came out of the substance, it combined the two into a new and powerful being called Takutanuva, with Takanuva’s mind dominating it. Takutanuva went to lift a large gate with his super-strength to open it, allowing the people to get pass it. Along the way, he revived Jaller, but he sacrificed some of his life force to do so, so he got weaker and couldn’t keep lifting the gate any longer, so it crushed him. When the people found the Mask of Light, they used it to revive Takanuva. The people then found a mysterious new island with a city on it (which we know that it was Metru Nui). While the people are moving in, the Turaga revealed that the Toa Nuva and Takanuva, who became their honorary member, that they weren’t the first Toa on the island. This led to the Turaga talking about the events of the 2004 storyline. To celebrate, let me ask you this: What are your fond memories of the storyline and/or what do you like about it? Let me say my answer. I think this is very great. The Rahkshi sets are very cool because of their gear function with twisting their upper torsos to make them swing their staffs. I like the spikes, staff pieces, bendable legs, upper torso design that looks like a snake’s upper body, and the opening function on it where you put a Kraata in there. Speaking of Kraata, they look cool, I must say. I like the blending of the colors and the various shapes of their heads. They are collectibles, as there are 36 kinds of them, and they can be found randomly in the Rahkshi and Kraata packs, similar to the Kanohi and Krana packs. Plus, later on, there are six types of Shadow Kraata in the sets, which was interesting as well. These are fun to collect as well. Anyway, man, the Rahkshi are quite fierce and dangerous because of their powers. They’re awesome. For the small sets, which are six Matoran, Hewkii, Taipu, Matoro, Kopeke, Hahli, and Macku, well, I guess they are alright. Their gear function is the same as the Rahkshi’s, but they were holding Kohlii sticks and Kohlii balls, so you can have the Matoran play Kohlii. That’s fun, and I like that they have bendable wrists, shoulders, and legs. Love the evolution from the 2001 Matoran sets. Those two large sets, which are the Takua and Pewku one and the Jaller and Gukko one, are quite good. You have more Matoran to play Kohlii with. I like Pewku’s moving function with the wheels and Gukko’s flapping wing function. They’re neat, and those Rahi are cute. I love that the Gukko have four wings. Sweet. You would see that combo models from 2001 are turned into these packaged sets as well. Neat. The set with Takanuva and the Ussalnui is quite amazing in some ways. Good thing that we got a new Toa with a new Elemental Power. I love the gold Nuva pieces, white, and the new blade on his staff. It’s interesting that you can position his head to let him driving the vehicle in a non-weirding way because his neck is stiff. The vehicle’s functions with the blades for the landing gear is quite cool, and I can say the same to the fact that you can have the vehicle contain many Kraata because it have the same Rahkshi back designs. I love the use of silver and Bohrok-Kal pieces, and I could say that Jaller’s gray mask is a nice feature on the vehicle, even if that it is a sad thing to look at it due to Jaller’s death. It’s weird that Takanuva looks like a Toa Nuva, even though that he’s not, though. As for the Makuta set, that is very impressive. He’s a big dude, and I love the bulk on his body and armor. He reminds me of the Exo-Toa in 2002 sort of. Like the Rahkshi, you can swing Makuta’s upper body to have him swing his big staff. I like the you can twist his masked head to show two faces on Makuta’s mask called the Mask of Shadows, though the pointed face is weird. Plus, I like his bendable arms, though it’s weird that he has silver versions of the Mask of Light as his hands. Man, does he look intimidating. I don’t like his legs, though, because they are kind of stiff. Now, as for a mighty combo large set, which is Takutanuva, a combo model made of the Takanuva and Makuta sets, I must say, he looks mighty impressive. Even though that he looks like a silver version of Makuta, I love his polearm-like weapon, spikes, and the fact that he uses Takanuva’s torso for his own torso to show that he is the fusion of the two guys. It’s quite interesting that he uses the Ussalnui’s pieces as well, as you can see some pieces, and I love the use of black, white, and silver on this guy. Quite artsy with this stuff. Plus, I like that he includes the movie version of Makuta’s mask piece. But, why not the Mask of Light and Shadows? I mean, it’s the guy’s mask, you know. There’s also Tahu’s poisoned mask piece, which are rare, but neat. Next, the combo models. Most of them look weird. There are those Matoran Kaita models, but they look very strange because of their limbs. The Rahkshi Kaita models are quite neat, but both look weird. I mean, the one made of Turahk, Levahk, and Kurahk looks mixed up, but I like that it has the three Rahkshi’s heads. The one made of Panrahk, Vorahk, and Guurahk is very strange because it looks like a Vorahk with Rahkshi arms for legs riding a Rahkshi-like steed with his butt glued to the steed’s back. However, I do like that each half of the steed’s body has its own unique color. The model with Makuta, T&P, and J&G, called Makuta Nui, looks quite amazing and menacing. I like the claws and teeth. Plus, it’s big. However, it looks a little weird, and I wish that Makuta could’ve used this form of his against Takanuva, like how Maleficent from Disney’s Sleeping Beauty turned into a dragon to fight Prince Philip and Jafar from Disney’s Aladdin into a giant cobra to fight Aladdin. For the Takutanuva model, well, same as I said above. As for the story and media, well, the story is very great, I must say. I love the epic fights, even if the Toa Nuva sets were released in 2002, and I love the light-vs.-darkness theme in the storyline. It is told though Bionicle’s first direct-to-video movie called Bionicle: Mask of Light in September 2003 (near my birthday), three comic book issues, a chapter book based on the movie, and a guidebook. The movie is like Lego’s first real medium in general. I remembered buying the movie on its release day. I watched and liked the movie. It is very great because it has some neat fight scenes and character development. I love the dramatic music in there as well. The animation designs in the characters are phenomenal (though it’s weird about the eye colors being mostly red and Pohatu and Onua looking different from their sets because of their torsos at least for some reason), as we can see some realistic stuff that makes they look like cyborgs rather than toys. I wish there are all 12 common Kanohi being shown in the movie rather being limited and rare in some ways. Plus, I wished that the the Le-Koro, Onu-Koro, and Ko-Koro Kohlii teams would have participated the tournament and have at least the Ko-Koro team appear in the movie because of their sets. The Toa are very cool as always. I cried about Jaller and Takanuva getting killed. But, good thing that they are revived. Plus, Pewku and Gukko are cute in the movie. To be honest, I thought that the 7th Toa would have been a different guy, but it was surprising that Takua could turn into him. I felt bad that Takua wasn’t confident and was shy in some things before he became Takanuva. Plus, I feel bad for people who lost their homes because of the Rahkshi, and for Tahu because he lost his Nuva masks and having been poisoned and cursed. I love how Makuta did in the movie. He was quite impressive and looks more menacing than his set. It’s weird that the movie version of his mask looks different from his set’s mask, though, but it looks good as I would say. Plus, it’s weird that Takutanuva’s movie and set looks are different for some reason, but he looks impressive either way. Man, the Rahkshi in the movie look quite scary, and they are scarier in the movie than their set forms. They look cool. I wish that movie would have the Rahkshi use their Kaita forms to make things more epic, though. I also wish that the comics could’ve talked about the movie. The movie got an award and a series of four direct-to-video movies in 2003-2009. Impressive. Why not there being a movie be about the 2001 storyline, though? It’s just to make things more interesting. The set animations from the CDs are neat to watch. I like that the Rahkshi hide in darkness to strike at their foes. The storyline also has an online game that we know and love called Mata Nui Online Game II: The Final Chronicle, a sequel to the Mata Nui Online Game in 2001 that centers around Hahli, who is a new Chronicler who is having adventure that involves exploring around the island. This also leads to her involvement to the movie’s events. I played and liked the game. It’s very fun, and I like how you get to explore the island, collect interesting things, and improve your Kohlii skills. However, I wish I could fly a Rahi bird, like the first game, and those glitches are annoying. I wasn’t completely done with the game because of them, too. There’s also a video game with a console version for the first time. It’s called Bionicle: The Game. It’s general about the 2001-2003 storylines, even though it is mostly about the 2002 and 2003 storylines. I played the PlayStation 2 game. It was okay, but it could’ve been a lot better. I mean, there’s not much you can do after an hour or two. I like that you fire energy, travel in some places throughout levels, and mostly the movie-esque graphics, but I wish the graphics could be a lot better. There are so many limitations. You only play some versions of the Toa and fight some enemies. I wanted much more. Why can’t the game be based on the 2001-2003 storylines much more, as you playing the Toa in every way? Plus, there are some false advertisements. Bummer. Not the best Lego game that I’ve ever had played. In fact, the game got some negative reviews, and a sequel based on the 2004 storyline got cancelled because of that, man. You know, it's quite interesting that the Rahkshi’s powers have been used to give the Makuta species the same powers later on. So, guys, what are you fond memories of the storyline, what do you like about it, what’s your favorite Bohrok-Kal (set), favorite character(s) in the storyline, favorite moment in the storyline, what things remind you of the storyline, and/or how would you celebrate it? For me, my favorite sets are Takutanuva, Turahk, Vorahk, Makuta, and Takanuva. My favorite characters in the storyline are Takua/Takanuva, Tahu, Onua, and Makuta. The things that remind me are: 1. Xialon Showdown - there’s this light-vs.-dark theme with Omi, a short guy, facing against bad guys who are about darkness. 2. Star Wars - Luke Skywalker is scared about fighting Darth Vader, which is like how Takua was scared of Makuta. Plus, the light-vs.-dark theme. 3. Ninjago’s 2013 storyline - Lloyd Garmadon fights against the Overlord. Lloyd is like Takua by starting out as a short guy who turned into a taller hero who is about light and is told to fight against a villain with dark powers, who is the Overlord, of course. Plus, the Overlord is very much like Makuta by shape-shifting, involving robots, making strategic plans, and creating powerful minions. Lord Garmadon is sort of like the Overlord, too. 4. Iron Man movie in 2008 - small hero fighting against big villain who is a bane of his existence. 5. Kingdom Hearts - there is a short guy named Sora who represents light and fights against powerful villains who represent darkness. 6. Bionicle’s 2016 storyline - Ekimu becomes a Toa of Light to fight against Makuta, who has Shadow powers, and his powerful minions. 7. Hero Factory - Von Nebula is sort of like Makuta in some ways, like being a dark-looking giant. Plus, Meltdown mind-controlling Stormer reminds me of Kurahk corrupting Tahu. 8. Sonic the Hedgehog in 2006 - there is this villain with dark powers named Mephilles who is fought in dark lairs. 9. Numbah 4’s mech in an episode of Codename: Kids Next Door where the Delight Children From Down The Lane was attacking the treehouse and used a device that zapped Numbah 1. It reminds me of the three-headed Rahkshi Kaita. 10. Legends of Chima - how there is this little Phoenix child who is sort of scared and learns to become powerful and fights against evil. 11. Steven Universe - Steven is sort of like Takua while the Crystal Gems are sort of like the Toa. 12. Samurai Jack - there is this light-vs.-dark theme sort of, and Jack represents light and fight against a shape-shifting villain named Aku, who represents darkness. 13. The Legend of Korra’s Season 2 - Korra and Raava represent light while Korra’s evil uncle and Vaatu represent darkness. Plus, there is the battle against the Avatar (Korra and Raava) and the dark Avatar (the evil uncle and Vaatu) 14. Fairly Odd Parents’ Wishology TV movies - how Timmy Turner is chosen to fight the Darkness is like Takua being chosen to become the Toa of Light to fight against Makuta. 15. Kirby games and TV show - how Kirby fights Nightmare is like Takanuva fighting Makuta. 16. The Powerpuff Girls - Makuta is like Mojo Jojo and Him combined. Mojo Jojo plans strategically while Him likes to mentally torture his heroic enemies. 17. The Lord of the Rings movies in 2001-2003 - the movie is kind of like Frodo’s quest to get rid of the One Ring to prevent a dark lord from taking over the place.
  7. Sorry if this becomes a bit disturbing but I'm sure Bionicle has done worse! I was rewatching Mask of Light a couple of days ago when I noticed something about Jaller's revival. Jalller is killed by Turahk and is left dead on the floor of the temple's entrance. Takanuva takes his mask with him as a good luck charm. Anyway in the end Takanuva uses Jaller's mask to "revive" Jaller and bring him back to life, a new body for Jaller is made using the mask as the base. Doesn't this mean that there is a maskless dead Jaller still up on the surface? What would happend if Jaller were to see this?!
  8. I'm pretty sure everyone knows what this is at first glance. This is Turaga Vakama, one of the latest additions to my series of miramax movie based mocs (joining the ranks of makuta, sidorak, vakama hordika, roodaka amongst others): He has a custom head, which allows for the eyebrow attachment, but boy is it a fragile connection. https://gyazo.com/4a81b74399fc02a162fc1f4a289ed6f7 leg https://gyazo.com/152b3ce85adcaa58ae4f81a2c0153912 chest https://gyazo.com/78878e0aab89b8237a543fae35905e14 back could be more elegant if i could get those grey pieces in dark tan https://gyazo.com/a3612885aed60a34fd2f5b78a3470905 with takua simple moc, but i think i'd venture to say the most accurate vakama out there. Thanks
  9. I figured I'd start this topic just for funsies. Anyway, now that Nathan Furst's wonderful Bionicle: Mask of Light soundtrack has been out for a couple of weeks and many fans (including me) have most likely listened to that masterpiece several times over by now, I'm curious to know what everyone's favorite track (or list of favorite tracks) on the album is. Personally, I think all 18 tracks are amazing and it's hard to narrow down which ones I like best. Since I can't quite decide on a definitive favorite, here's my top 3: Unity, Duty, Destiny Toa Reunited and Death of Jaller Legend of the Bionicle A few additional tracks that are major highlights for me: A Great Kanohi Mask Koli Tournament Toa Lewa Helps Destruction of Onu-Koro (I get chills every time I hear that guitar mixed in with the orchestra in the scene where Tahu is being possessed) A Simple Game of Koli So...do you have a favorite track or a list of favorites? If so, feel free to share them. If you want to rank the entire album that would also be cool.
  10. Special thanks to Kortess for designing this fantastic mask. Been wanted to put this together for a while after getting the mask but been at uni. Finally got a break home so i did this. Noticed someone recently put a similar moc up here, so i promise im not trying to steal anyones thunder. Just coincidental timing. Anyway, this is my best attempt to create a movie faithful Makuta. Obviously the colors are wrong since they're impossible lol. Also the red crotch, as im sure people will bring up, is red because it was red both in the movie and the set, and I wanted some dark red thrown in without going nuts. I guess Makuta likes getting busy. Also in the movie he has two thumbs. There wasn't a way to elegantly put that on a hand without making the hand too bulky or unsightly so i went with what I did. Also this way he can hold his staff in a reasonably realistic manner. Ill probably put up more shots soon, but my lamp currently broken. Lemme know what you guys think. Peace ~Ids5621~
  11. The soundtrack to Bionicle: Mask of Light is finally out! It's available through iTunes/Apple Music, Spotify, and Amazon. What do you guys think? Worth the wait? For me, the standout tracks are easily "The Legend of the Bionicle", "Koli Tournament", and "Unity, Duty, Destiny". What say you? TAK
  12. I know that three BIONICLE books contain pictures inside. Those are BIONICLE: Mask of Light, BIONICLE: Legends of Metru Nui and BIONICLE Adventures 3: The Darkness Below. MoL and LoMN had pictures from the movies in the middle, and TDB had black-and-white photos of the Krahka at the back. I found them all except of the MoL pictures. Does anybody have scans or photos of the Mask of Light pictures? Since I never had an original book, I really want to see them. Here are the links: LoMN scans Krahka photos
  13. Hi all! I want show you my just-for-fun vid, that I created this evening. It's kinda trailer (sorry for russian speech) of "Bionicle: Mask of Light". I wanted to make it look like original trailers, so I make kinda synchronization between video and soundtrack (I hope it look good). Here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pao6flR7u84 Any comments are welcome!
  14. This Matoran is based on the Jaller and Takua's appearance in MoL. I didn't make any particular character since silver and red was the only color scheme that worked for this MOC. Front Back Enjoy!
  15. So I was watching the Making of feature on Mask of Light and I noticed this fellow sitting on a table: He's a 2003 Matoran prototype (he's even got Throwbot arms like Jaller here), he's got a Pakari, and looks pretty gold and white to me (could be blue and black though?) So it's Takua, right? But why would there be a set of Takua as a gold and white Matoran? Something wacky like Special Edition In-the-Process-of-Transformation Takua? I don't know. Maybe you have an idea?
  16. Here's my version of Takua and his trusy crab Pewku. Takua is wearing face paint because he's SUPPOSED to be at the Kohlii match already, but of course his curiosity gets the better of him. I wonder what he's looking at... Here's the link to my deviantart for a bigger picture: http://skygazer17.deviantart.com/art/Chronicler-470579602
  17. Elegy of the Fallen By: Soran We’ve had it rough but it isn’t so bad, Just think of the fun and adventures we’ve had. Just think of the time we visited the jungle, Or of snowy plains or even that tunnel. I remember it clearly, when the fear first set. The shadows arrived, and I was met with a bet. A life or a mask was all it desired, But who’s to say that’s all it conspired. When the shadows arrived to claim its reward, It was met with our strength, our bond restored. But as darkness crept in, I was greeted with fear, You noticed my pause and took in the spear. As your body laid limp, my destiny was clear, I put on the mask and was released from the fear, I arose with the power and strength the mask gave, I sought vengeance for myself and the friend I couldn’t save. As the fear crept away I journeyed to the core, To end all the fear and end this great war. With light as my guide I fought to the end, Fighting to avenge the fallen… A Friend. ------------ Backstory: The story this poem is referencing is the events of Mask of Light incase it wasn't clear, specifically about the relationship between Takua and Jaller in overcoming fear, as well as Jaller's sacrifice (hence the term, "Elegy".) It was written from the perspective of Takua/Takanuva. I'll be honest that the real reason for writing the poem was because I like the word "Elegy" and felt the need to plug it in something and since I've been reading a lot of poems recently I felt inspired to try my take on them. I was considering drawing an illustration for it but I didn't feel like making one right now. If I did I'd probably make a short comic featuring the events in the poem. Overall I'd say I'm pretty satisfied with how it turned out. Only stanzas I'm not too keen on is paragraph 4, stanzas 1 and 2. I feel like using "fear" as a rhyming word more than once wasn't too great, but oh well. I also noticed that I made an accidental reference to Karda-Nui in the last couple stanzas which I thought was pretty cool. Comments and critique are welcome. I'd like to know people's thoughts and where I could possibly improve. Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy the poem. ~Soran
  18. The one that started it all... If you're the kind of person who doesn't read topic titles, this is a spoof of BIONICLE: Mask of Light (2003), originally written in 2004. Aside from some minor edits for the sake of formatting, grammar, and sanity (like seriously, why did I explain like half the jokes at the start of each chapter?! Did I not realize people had the Internet and could look up what they didn't understand?!), this is all raw and unedited from my 14 year old brain. Why did I think I could be sued for following the dialogue too closely? Why did I straight up change random parts of the movie? Why did I reuse several jokes to death and back again? And what was with all that pie stuff? These are but many of the questions you may be asking as you read. The rest of it's pretty good, though. Trust me. -SPIRIT Chapter 1- Lava Surfing Vakama: Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, Gathered friends, listen to our legend of the Bionicle. Bionicle Fans: Yahoo! Vakama: Ahem! In the time before time the Gr- Hey, wait a second! How can there be a time before time??? (GregF whispers in his ear) Vakama: Oh!.... Can I tell them what happens in the Metru Nui storyline? Director: Stop wasting time! Vakama: Sorry! Some people... Anyway, the Great SPIRIT descended from the heavens carrying we, the Matoran to this para- actually we were Tohunga at the time, but that means something special in Maori and there was this big lawsuit and we needed to change our name and no one like my idea of the Pie-Eaters so we became Matoran. Director: What are you doing?!?! Keep it up and I'll replace you with Nokama. Vakama: Hey! You're not fighting fair! Director: Vakama: Where was I?......Oh, yeah. To this paradise. We were separate and without purpose (life was really boring, BZPower hadn't been invented yet). Director: Vakama: So the Great Spirit showed us the three virtues: Unity, Duty, and Destiny. (Go duty!!!) Director: Vakama: We thanked him by naming our island home after the Great Spirit himself: Makuta- I mean Mata Nui. But our happiness was not to last. Mata Nui's brother, the Makuta was jealous of these honors and betrayed him, he put Mata Nui into a deep slumber. The Makuta was free to unleash his shadows, and unleash them, he did. Hee! Hee! I sound like Yoda.............Ah! The Shadows! I can't see!!! Director: You just blinked! Vakama: I can see again!......Hey are we still filming? Director: That's it! You're fired! Vakama: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BIONICLE Mask of Light (Title Scene) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Now in Ta-Koro) Jaller: Takua! He's got more rock in his head than a Po-Matorun... I mean Po-Matoran, it's a good thing I'm not reading the DVD subtitles. Po-Matoran: Hey! Jaller: Oops!..... Takua! (He sees Takua's Kolhii stick on the wall) (Jaller sets off for the lava caves) Takua! Takua! Takua: Did you hear something? Pewku: Nope. Takua: Oh...... I didn't know you could talk!!! Pewku: I can't. Takua Pewku: What do you expect? It's a movie, anything can happen! Takua: Okay .......I prefer you didn't talk, it freaks me out . Pewku: Sure, no problem. (She starts whistling the MoL tune in the background). Takua: Pewku: Takua: Look at that! (Points at the totem) That's why they call me the Chronicler. Jaller: Who's they? Takua: I dunno...... Aren't you supposed to be here a few seconds later? Jaller: Yeah, but there wasn't any traffic today. Director: So what? Wait for your cue! Jaller: Fine! Takua: (Looking at the totem) Oooo... Pretty. I bet no one ever recorded this before. Jaller: Duh! You're the only Chronicler! Takua: Right... Director: Takua and Jaller: (There is a five minute pause) Director: Whose line is it?!?! Jaller: It's your script. Takua: Burn!.....(He bursts out laughing) Jaller and Director: Takua: Get it? Burn, lava, Ta-Koro? (There's an awkward silence) Takua: I'll shut up now. Jaller: Takua! Takua: That's my name, don't wear it out! Jaller: What are you doing here all alone? Takua: Pewku's here. Pewku: He's got a point. Takua: Pewku: Jaller: We're supposed to be at the Kolhii match. Takua: But Ga-Koro is going to win! Jaller: How do you know? Takua: Why else would they make a MNOLG about someone other than me? Jaller: You've got a point....... , but if we don't, Turaga Vakama will try to replace us... Takua: (He gets a mental image of Vakama playing Kolhii and shudders)......Hang on a sec...Must-go-to-pretty-light. Jaller: You're hopping across lava to look at a rock with light that comes out of nowhere on it? Takua: Yep. Jaller: Why not take the bridge? Takua: It's a bit late now! Jaller: Do you know what Turaga Vakama would say? Takua doing a perfect imitation of Vakama: Trust in the Mask, let it be your guide. Jaller: I asked what he would say, not what he will say. Takua: Pretty light. Jaller: (Takua trips and hits the stone which falls into the lava) Jaller: You Kolhii head! Takua: Oopsie! (Mol pops out of the lava) Takua: Pretty. Jaller: Have you considered therapy? Takua Sarcastically: Ha. Ha. Ha. Takua: Never seen this language before. Jaller: Let's go! Takua: Okie, Dokie! (Takua jumps onto the lavaboard and throws the Mask to Jaller. It hits him in the face and he falls down. A big lava wave hits Takua who falls into the lava and sinks) Director: Holy Kanohi! Jaller: Don't worry, he was just a stunt double. Stunt Double: Help me! It burns! Director: Quit your whining! (Stunt Double swims to shore and hops out of the lava all burnt and crisp) Stunt Double: I forgot about my lava-proof suit. Director: Where's Tahu?!?! Tahu Nuva: Sorry, I was just saving Mata Nui, it can wait. (The Stunt Double hops onto the lavaboard and is picked up by Tahu Nuva) Tahu Nuva: Chronicler! Sightseeing again? Let's get a closer look at those falls! (Tahu jumps off the falls and does his lava surfing thing) Tahu Nuva: So, Takua, this view close enough? Takua Sarcastically: No I want to be closer. Tahu Nuva Believingly: Really? Takua: No! (Whispering:) Kolhii Head...... (Yelling:) Incoming! (A gabajillion Bohrok come out of no where and start charging) Tahu Nuva: Don't worry (He uses his Hau Nuva and the charging Bohrok all bounce off) Takua: Cool! (Tahu Nuva climbs up the wall)
  19. After Takutanuva was crushed and separated by that giant door, the Kraakan was said to have be smashed slightly (hence the loss of a 'vent' on the 2008 version), and the Avohkii came out unharmed (I assume). What's up with that? Was that just a movie/story plothole?
  20. QUOTE TAGS, I DON'T KNOW WHY YOU DON'T WORK, BUT PLEASE WORK After I posted this blog entry, I found myself frequently thinking about Makuta's role in Mask of Light. So here's another entry compiling my thoughts. A lot of what Makuta says in Mask of Light gets obfuscated by his demeanor. He has a deep, rumbling voice, an oily, patched-together appearance, and he hangs out in a cave filled with thick green smoke and pillars holding creatures in stasis. On top of it all, he is very clearly the designated villain in what is a kiddy, direct-to-video film made to sell toys. Literally everything sets our expectations to "he is a bad guy," and we don't question it. But look beyond this external layer, and we find something rather different through a few curious hints. It begins in Makuta's first appearance. Before he releases the Rahkshi, he contemplates, I'm not sure how to frame this in any way other than as remorse at the idea of what he is about to do. So what convinces him? It comes back to Mata Nui. Makuta will do whatever it takes to ensure his brother remains asleep. This isn't a ruthless, power-hungry maniac bent on world domination - if that were the case, he would have no qualms with unleashing the Rahkshi. So the Rahkshi set out and start to terrorize the island, and Makuta sits back and observes. But something goes wrong - Kopaka manages to freeze the beasts within a lake, incapacitating them. Makuta can no longer rely on the fact that his sons will halt the coming of the seventh Toa, so he goes to plan B. Even though Takua himself doesn't know it yet, Makuta knows that the Matoran is right smack in the center of this matter. So he makes him an offer: If you stand down, give me the Avohkii so that Mata Nui can never be awakened, I will leave you alone. Your friends, the entire island, will be free from my grasp. Takua, like us viewers, don't think twice about calling Mukau droppings on him. Yeah, right. If you give the McGuffin to the bad guy, he'll let you off scotch free. That's likely. But what happens after Takua departs, when Makuta is left to himself, with noone listening? What does he say? Unless Makuta is in the habit of lying through his teeth to himself for no reason, his offer was absolutely genuine. With his last resort, the Rahkshi, evidently unable to stand up to the Toa Nuva, his hand was forced and he tried the next best thing to victory: ensuring that his brother could, at least, remain asleep and be spared the pain of conciousness. But Takua has none of it, so he does the next best thing: more Rahkshi. So by now, you may be asking: why? Why are all of these hints dropped in Mask of Light, of all places? What about the myriad of other story media leading up to it, why isn't it hinted at in any of it, too? For the answer, we have to dig a little into the past. If you are a longtime fan, then you might recall the earliest press releases for Mask of Light in 2002. They had familiar elements: two friends on a quest, the fate of the island at stake. But something else was mentioned in these synopses meant to strip the story to its absolute core: the island is crumbling into the ocean. Obviously, this plot element does not survive into the final film. And with good reason, because it ties into another major element of the film that was canned: the awakening of Mata Nui. Throughout the conclusion, wierd things keep happening. Everyone insists that they are descending into the Mangaia to awaken the Great Spirit, only for the matter to be forgotten once they literally do something that is supposed to awaken him. Takanuva instructs for all of the island's inhabitants to be gathered, and later brought underground, but we only get the Turaga (in the novelization, the island's population does in fact show up). This all makes sense only in the context of a film where Mata Nui does awaken; the islanders would need to be safely underground before Mata Nui could stand up and destroy the island. This explains the early island-crumbling plot. In the days before his awakening, Mata Nui is stirring, rocking the island and breaking chunks of it off. Incidentally this explains a scene that does make it to the final film: Jaller and Takua's reuniting. Jaller ends up vulnerable thanks to an earthquake, which you don't really question until you look at is specifically. An earthquake? Natural disasters like that never happen on Mata Nui outside that instance. Its a really weird anomaly in the mythos that seems solely an excuse to have Jaller mistake Takua for an approaching Rahkshi until you consider that it was originally part of a very relevant, ongoing series of quakes on the island. That also explains Jaller's wry response to the event - earthquakes were common. Otherwise, he might have been expected to be more "wow! an earthquake!" like Vakama in the Kikanalo scene in LOMN. So that's why we get all of these hints dropped regarding Makuta's true nature. Originally, Mask of Light was the BIONICLE finale, and the climax was to be the revelation of Makuta's true nature. Eventually, Takanuva is born and travels to the Mangaia. Makuta's last ditch resort is to keep his cool and challenge Takanuva for his mask, as without the Toa of Light Mata Nui cannot be awakened. This, too fails, and we get to that all-important dialogue first highlighted by Lucina: Naturally, Takanuva reacts with shock, confusion and denial. And then Makuta responds with what seems like a really strange non-sequiter. But despite how little sense it makes, it has a powerful effect on Takanuva. Suddenly, he is confident. He knows what to do. {quote]Then let's take a closer look... behind that mask! I feel like the implication here is that Makuta's badness is somehow tied to his mask (the 'real' him is 'behind' it). Takutanuva isn't, in reality, all that important in the final movie. He lifts the gate for everyone. But if, say, Makuta had been incapacitated, it seems entirely within reason that the Toa Nuva could've opened it themselves somehow. But in our supposed original version of the film, Takutanuva is all-important. He is the merged conciousness of Takanuva and Makuta. Suddenly, both understand each other, and they know what must be done to set things right. Cue the awakening of Mata Nui. Fin. So there you have it. What Mask of Light could have been.
  21. I’m not sure whether it’s because of Bionicle incoming return, my own personal boredom, or a combination of other things but I've been thinking a lot recently about the Bionicle films, their themes, their characters and how much of a part of my childhood they were when I was an easily amused teenager. Naturally as a jaded, bitter adult I can now look back on these films with mockery and scorn. Yeah I’m going to come right out and say that these reviews will not be kind ones so just a warning if your feelings are easily hurt by somebody making fun of a LEGO movie. Another thing to get out of the way before we begin: When watching and reviewing these movies I’m going in pretending that I’m not a Bionicle fan, that I never bought any of the toys, books, or games, I never read the comic or played/read the online web videos, games, and serials. I will still bring those things up, either as what I feel is a logical comparison or for snark reasons, but I want to make it clear that “It’s not a plot hole because they explained it in the comic.” Is not and will never be a defense, in fact any film that requires you to read supplemental material to understand what is going on has failed as a film, the writer responsible should be held accountable for it. With all that said, let’s get into the review: The pre-title sequence is actually something I like. It tells us about Mata Nui a god-like being (Yes I said God being deny it all you want LEGO but you know the truth) who brought his people/children/followers called the Matoran to a paradise island that was later named after him. He bestowed upon them the three virtues (Unity, Duty, and Destiny. Be ready to learn those words folks ‘cause you won’t forget them!) And as most legend go, the Matoran lived in harmony. Also as most legends that involve a benevolent God, we get a Satan figure; this time around called Makuta who followed Mata Nui from Paradise and put him to sleep. The Makuta was then “free to unleash his shadows” and then...that’s it. The Legend ends kind of abruptly. This leads us to the first of the films many flaws. See, in every other media from 2001-2003 we heard this legend at least once and it matches the one introduced in MoL, up to a certain point. The running theme in all of them is that Makuta put Mata Nui to sleep but then the six Toa arrived, defeated the Makuta and all went for lunch. This film omits this, and in fact we don’t meet a Toa for several minutes, and heck we don’t learn that much about them until several more after that. I can understand the difficulties of creating a film that is essentially telling only the third part of the story, but all the same it does a very poor job of explaining the period between “Makuta arrives” and “Makutas threats have been defeated.” Anyway the story begins proper with a sweeping environmental shot that then zooms in to one of the Matoran and co-hero of this picture: Jaller supposed Captain of the Ta-Koro Guard (I say ‘supposed’ because we never actually see him doing anything remotely military like) who is looking for his friend, Takua. Who is Takua? Well it turns out he’s a Chronicler. What’s a Chronicler? Well apparently it’s somebody who hops across lava rocks to look at glowing stones. Why is he hopping across lava to look at a stone? Because that’s what Chronicles do of course! Anyway it turns out Jaller and Takua are Kolhii players, and they’re late for their match. What is Kolhii you ask? Well I imagine the story teams initial pitch was “Let’s take Lacrosse, and make it suck even more.” Jaller wants Takua to hurry his butt up, but Takuas desire to channel his inner Indiana Jones means he has to grab the glowing stone. Considering there was a direct pathway leading down to this cavern, plus the presence of hopping stones, I’m going to assume that the village leaders knew about this stone and that means Takua is stealing public property. In true Indiana Jones fashion, taking the glowing stone sets off a trap, in this case a massive wave of liquid hot magma, but before it does the stone falls in the water to reveal: I bet it has a chocolaty interior. Anyway, seeing a massive wave of lava heading toward him Takua does the logical thing and jumps on his lava board into the middle of the lava lake. Some people make call you an idiot for doing this Takua, and I’m one of them. But thankfully for the deformed midget, his hero and protector of Ta-Koro, Toa of Fire Tahu arrives to save him. What’s a Toa? We don’t know yet. Who is Tahu? No idea. Why was he in the lava cave? Best guess would be to set off volcanic eruptions and save terrified midgets. Why does he decide to endanger one of the villagers live recklessly? Because he’s Tahu and he can do what whatever the heck he wants. Minor detail: But from where they are, how far they fell, and at the rate Tahu is suing to climb the rock it should take him like two hours at the least to get all the way to the top of the lava falls. This would mean Jaller had been standing in one spot moping for two hours straight before Tahu threw his swords at him for no reason other than to be a jerk. So FINALLY after expressing interest in a mystical mask and solving lava shenanigans our two young heroes (I think they’re supposed to be young anyway considering they both act like a couple of twelve year olds, which makes Jallers appointment to Guard Captain even more baffling) and their crab get their things together and...Wait did Jaller just take Takuas bag? He did! In fact why did Takua bring an empty bag with him in the first place? It’s way too small for a big rock, and even if it was for that why didn’t he bring the bag with him? For that matter why leave his stuff near a random archway instead of loading it on his crab? Regardless as our intrepid young heroes make their way to lacrosse, we hear the narrator (now revealed to be Turaga Vakama, an elder) exposit that the Toa are six heroes’ who ‘represent the elements’ and because of them the world is in an age of peace. This is most certainly not information we could have used at the beginning of the film because why bothering creating a world when you just assume everybody knows what you’re talking about. During this speech we’re introduced to two more Toa: Gali, Toa of water and winner of the “Most freakish body proportions in an animated film” award and Pohatu, Toa of Stone and Patron of Kolhii. We also find out that Gali and Tahu don’t like each other much as evidence by their nonchalant put downs of each other. I hope you liked their banter kids because this plot point is promptly dropped after this scene and their animosity is never brought up again, because who needs on-screen Character development? Also through that little exchange we saw the Turaga watching them before Vakama resumed his own speech. Did they just pause everything so they could chuckle at their saviors personal feuds? Anyway after a few more words and Triple D word references (*insert joke not appropriate for BZP here*) we finally get to the Kolhii tournament, brought to you by The Pod Race, Quiditch and other fictional sports designed solely to pad out their respective mediums. Well since we’re here, who are the competitors? We’ve already been introduced to junior league Guard Captain and Indiana Jones wannabe: Jaller and Takua. The other teams are the female Ga-Matoran team consisting of “I’m one of three characters with a unique mask” Hahli, and “I’m irrelevant” Macku, and the Po-Matoran Kolhii champions “Our presence is pointless” team consisting of Hewkii and Hafu. The game gets underway and...Ugh it’s just midgets hitting a metal ball with sticks for five minutes. Whoopee freaking doo. In the middle of the game Hahli throws some flirtatious comments towards Jaller (something that should probably be against regulations). Anyway Takua pulls off a really stupid looking move that honestly looks as though it could never work and the game ends (I know I skipped through it but there was honestly nothing to talk about). The move costs him the game and Team Gurl Power wins. After this the teams take a bow and...What’s this? Why it’s the glowing Mcguffin! I guess we actually have to get the plot moving at some point, so the Turaga gather everybody around a glowing temple thingy and translate the words on the back of the mask. As it turns out it’s a Mask of Light (WHAT A SHOCK) and it is to be worn by a Seventh Toa or as Gali helpfully points out: “The Prophecy is being fulfilled.” Yes, Gali the audience has figure that out, for that matter I’m quite positive everybody in that scene is aware a prophecy is being fulfilled, although I won’t let that stop your excitement. As the scene continues we find out that the Seventh Toa is one who will “bring light to the shadows” and finally hit the Snooze button on Mata Nuis alarm. We also find out that this Toa must be found on the island somewhere, and that a Herald will be the one to do it. Who is the Herald? Well it’s Jaller of coarse! Because a light...shined on him. OK, I get they want to push the angle that Takua knows he’s the real herald and wants to avoid the responsibility for unexplained reasons (all he has to is hold a mask and walk, it’s not difficult), but nobody else every once thinks “Hang on, Takua found the mask in the first place, and it was touch him when the light shined on Jaller. Perhaps he’s the Herald?” But no, we have to force this conflict somehow and Darn it this is how we do it! Right after this we find out that, according to Tahu all Makutas threats had been defeated but they never mention if they directly fought Makuta himself. Perhaps that’s something they should have taken care of instead of watching Lacrosse games. Anyway we also find out that Gali already took off before the meeting was over, you’d think she would have wanted to stick around and discuss the matter with her fellow Toa but I think she felt so proud of herself for telling everybody about fulfilled prophecy that she pulled a George Costanza and left on a High Note. Where did she go you ask? Well it turns out a lush jungle which houses a Great Temple is only a short walk away from the active Volcano, and Gali went here to “Ponder the Great Thoughts.” While here she sees a “Seventh Star” Looks to be a lot more than seven to me Gali, but I’m sure another prophecy fulfilling itself fills you with too much joy to notice. But what’s real import is the scene segues, not just any segue mind you but one that finally introduces us to our villain! It only took 17 freaking minutes but here we are introduced to Makuta, recent graduate of the “Beginners tropes for kids villains.” What tropes you ask? Well let us count the ways: 1. Shadowy lair that hides his true features? Check 2. Deep, booming voice virtually interchangeable with other deep voiced villains? Check. 3. Psudeo-Cryptic clues? Check 4. Obsession with Monologueing? Check It is through this monologueing that Makuta tells us that the Seventh Toa has “Begun its approach” and apparently blames Matoran prophecies for this. Being a villain, the plot dicates he has to stop this so we’re introduced to creatures that “Should never see the light of day” (even though they do see the light of day so not sure why he needed to add that). He cleverly introduces their powers and then sends his ‘sons’ off their merry way to wreak mayhem, or as much as mayhem as they can as we’ll soon see. With that Exposition out the way, we return to Ta-Koro where the protagonists are finally beginning their journey. Being that this is an incredibly important quest that could be filled with danger and peril the Toa and Turaga are doing everything in their power to- Oh, all they get is a giant crab? Well as long the enemy doesn’t hit her weak point for max damage I’m sure they’ll be fine. Before setting out Hahli and Jaller exchange some more completely platonic and in no way flirtatious dialog. I do question why Hahli was even still there considering she should have left with her village, but I’ll just assume she stuck around to gloat about her victory. So Jaller and Takua set off and...Wait a minute Are they lowering the bridge BEFORE the traveler’s make their way across? That seems like an incredibly dangerous and easily fixed safety measure. But enough of that, we return to Gali, still meditating at the temple but not for long as a dark shadow begs to gather in the sky, birds flock away in terror as the Sons of Makuta emerge from the temple! I...wait if Makuta is implied to have all these tunnels underground then why have his minions emerge in an incredibly obvious place? Why not come out in one of the remote areas and not attract attention? Anyway, Gali gets the heck out of there before realizing the creatures are heading for Ta-Koro, and swims after them. Knowing full she has to warn her friends and inform them about the Prophecy being fulfilled. She gets there quickly (again, how freaking close are these places? It’s called a sense of scale movie!), and she along with Tahu and the army of clones they have guarding the city prepare for battle. Also: Just saying. So the minions (now revealed to be Rahkshi) attack, but the Toa are ready for them as Tahu raises his magic shield and...gets knocked out instantly, Huh. Well do not fear the Toa of Water will raise her blades and get...flung...several...feet. Oh geez, we’re going to lose aren’t we? Well the Rahkshi attack brings proper as the beasts casually stroll through the streets of Ta-Koro, and if that wasn’t evil enough, one of them begins moving knocking around small stones! Enraged by this act of mild vandalism, Tahu charges with fury to the Rahkshi, in his rage he jumps over it for no reason, stabs his swords into the ground AND.... Causes the ground to glow slightly. No wonder they need a new Toa. Anyway Gali realizes how utterly inept her brother Toa is and wisely suggest they retreat and regroup. Tahu isn’t convinced at first but another sentence from Gali gets him to agree with her. But the attack isn’t over as the Rahkshi continue their aggressive assault. First by punching a small hole in a wall and then knocking over some more carefully balanced stones. The monsters! Well it does lead to the only funny scene in the movie: I admit it. I get a chuckle very time I see it. Anyway Tahu continues his brilliant tactic of “shoot fire around the enemy instead of at them” but this is once against foiled as his fire barrier is taken down by...poison? Screw it I’m not even going to question that by this point. What I am going to question is this: So the Rahkshi had been able to knock Tahu down and with a clear advantage it...tries to choke him with its staff? Why not just blast him with poison when you had the chance? For that matter we see later that the Rahkshi can channel their power through their whole staff so why not do that now? If can’t do that then why did Makuta only design certain ones to have that ability? Well regardless the two wrestle for a bit before being blasted by Galis water, the result of which gives Tahu a nasty cut on his face/mask/whatever they are in this film. With the battle lost and the city falling apart, the two Toa lava surf out of there. While the Rahkshi commit one final act of vandalism as they break a small stone statue, the savages. Well with that incredibly stupid action scene out of the way the characters take a guess as to where the plot will take them next. Vakama explains the Rahkshi didn't kill anybody because of the PG rating they couldn't find what they were looking for. They actually use their brains for once and realize the Rahkshi are after Jaller and Takua, Tahu wants to go after them alone but Gali says they should gather the other Toa. This was one of the times when the film tries to push the whole “The Toa aren't united” angle but fails at it as I’ll explain later. But back to our protagonists. They are now in the jungles of Le-Wahi, how much time has passed since they left? How long did it take them to get here? Heck if I know because this films track of time would cause Clock King to commit suicide. Anyway they spend the next couple minutes bickering about nothing before reach our next laughable ‘action piece’ as the two are attacked by an Ash Bear. What is an Ash Bear you ask? Well nobody knows for sure but common theory is that it’s a fan of Ash Ketchum. Anyway one scene of comical life threatening hijkinks later, the Bear is captured by vines. Vines controlled by who you ask? Why it’s Lewa, Toa of Air and Mata Nuis resident Irish Hippie Native American, depending on his scene. Lewa tells them that he knows about their quest and offers to help, by way of giving them a Gukko bird to fly on. I can imagine learning how to fly live birds takes many years of practice and focus to master, which is why the brave and noble Toa of Air throws the small villagers on a random bird with no restrains or instructions. I’m going to assume Lewa has been indulging in special “Jungle plants” if you know what I mean. So Lewa leads them high above the cloud and up a cliff (a place which he only assumes they’re going, should they be following the mask?) and causes the Gukko bird to crash into the snow, and based on how it landed it looks like its wings might be injured: Well regardless “we’re here,” again how did you know you were supposed to be here? Did you read the script? But sadly Lewa finds out via repetitive drums that Ta-Koro is destroyed and must go to the other Toa. He also promises to go see Jallers village right afterward, but lucky for him they’re the same destination so that’s good for him. So, Lewa takes to the skies while Jaller and Takua head out through the snow on foot, presumably leaving the poor Gukko to die a slow cold death. Marching through the snow on a pair of broken skies, the two continue to bicker about who the real Herald is before running into BOHROK!!! What are Bohrok? Those things. What, think the movie will actually explain what they are? You wish, this film is for REAL fans *puts on sunglasses*. Anyway it turns out their frozen, and the one who did the freezing was Mr White Christmas himself, Kopaka Toa of Ice. It turns out the two were unknowingly following him, which might be why he gives them the cold shoulder. As the two exposit, we cut to the edge of Ta-Koro (again) where we see Tahu, Gali, and Lewa worry about how they’ll defeat the baddies. We also see Tahus’ scar seemingly get worse and the scene ends with nothing of importance happening. Whoopee. We go back to our other heroes chilling out when we see that Ko-Koro has been attacked apparently. The three lose their cool as the Rahkshi attack and Kopaka send the two away and prepares to kick some ice. Well he was going to but then he gets knocked down the hill with the others, before getting knocked out cold. Jaller remains frozen with terror while Takua jumps onto a nearby lake with Kopakas shield and desperately tries to paddle away. However his junior paddling skills don’t help him and the Rahkshi are...all knocked out the sky by a single blast from Kopaka before promptly being frozen in ice. So far Kopaka has down more than all four of the other Toa combined. Best character so far? Best character. Anyway he gives them a compliment before giving them the cold shoulder again and heading off. The other two meanwhile realize it’s been more than five minutes since a scenery change and head into the tunnels. But the threat has passed and the film should be winding down right? *36 minutes left* Oh jeez. Well anyway the two wander into the tunnels before somehow being separated (I saw ‘somehow’ because I’m not sure how they could have but whatever) and Takua is confronted by...EYES! Actually it’s Makuta here to remind us all he still exists and to make what is quite frankly an incredibly transparent and equally lame threat on Jallers life if Takua doesn't give him the mask. Well being that he’s essentially their Satan, any promises of safety are blatant lies and only an idiot would keep this conversation to himself and quit right? Which is exactly what Takua does because quite frankly he is an idiot, and an incredibly self-absorbed one to boot. Why should we cheer for him again? Oh it’s a kids movie? Well that fixes all the plot holes nice and right. We also see that Makuta has three more color-coded Rahkshi that he unleashes. While that stupidly is going on we are introduced to Onua, Toa of Earth and final Toa to be introduced 41 minutes in. Pacing! He’s apparently Pohatu’s BFF and the two exchange pleasantries before Pohatu tells the gathered Onu-Matoran that the Mask of Light has been found (word evidently travels at a snail’s pace on this island), just as Takua sulks in. He lies about why they split up before the village is attacked by the new baddies. Onua fights them using the same Toa tactic of “Attack the ground and hope I hit something” before using the other Toa tactic of “lightly push their staff” before having his power drained. Pohatu, being enthralled by such riveting action finally gets it in his head to help Onua by using yet another tried and true Toa strategy: “Run very slowly toward the enemy and get hit by an easily avoidable blast.” The Rahkshi however overcome the brilliant battle plan. Takua meanwhile realizes he’s the protagonist which means he instantly changes moods and bravely stands up to the Rahkshi. Not to fear though, for Tahu has arrived to do what Tahu does best: Get knocked out instantly. Lewa also swoops in and picks up both Takua and the crab (which he can do now apparently), flying them off to safety. Tahu meanwhile got a face full of anger (seriously) and in his enraged state...does exactly what he does before IE: shoot fire at the ground. Gali, unsure if this is a prophecy being fulfilled or not does not know if she can help him. So naturally all it take is for Kopaka to arrive out of nowhere and freeze Tahu solid. Like a boss. Back with the Rahkshi and pals, Onua finally does something correctly and brings the cavern down on them...resulting in himself and Pohatu getting buried along with most of the village. He also almost killed the other Toa. Smart. Regardless Takua and the other Toa did escape, and in the case of the latter Tahu is brought to a jungle where the other three begin preparations to help. To cure poison and magic anger they must “Summon all the healing powers we possess” because those are powers they have now. More specifically they shock him with a type of energy and then Gali covers him with water. Good to know that stuff just washes right off. Afterward, Gali questions if they have ‘lost their unity’ (I’m going to assume there isn’t a prophecy to be fulfilled concerning that) and Kopaka, realizing how stupid this conversation will be buggers off to be awesome. Also wait a second: -Cold attitude -Does feats no other person can -Able to appear/disappear at will. Kopaka is Batman. This is canon. Try to prove me wrong. But now for a tangent about this “Unity” subplot. This whole time the film tries to push the idea that the Toa aren't united and won’t stand together...but that’s a load of bull BECAUSE THAT’S ALL THEY DO IN THE FILM! The ONLY one who is actively against working with the others is Tahu, and even then it’s implied that’s only because of the poison. For every other Toa the only reason they don’t come to help is because they don’t know there’s a crisis: Lewa and Kopaka go help without prompting or hesitation, Pohatu and Onua obviously like the other Toa, Kopaka only leave the other sot help those two. They are untied for this whole film! This is not a conflict! THIS IS A PLOT THAT FAILS ON EVERY POSSIBLE LEVEL! Ugh, speaking on abandoned plots Takua rejoins Jaller and the two instantly forgive each other before continuing on to Kini Nui: The great Temple (Tahu wakes up in the middle of this but that isn't important). Upon getting there the Mcguffin of Light begins to glow brighter and blasts away part of a statue; however the two are instantly besieged by Rahkshi! Six Rahkshi in fact! Well never fear for the Toa are here, including two that by all accounts should be dead. “Brothers we thought we lost you” Yeah you should great concern for them off-screen I’m sure. Perhaps their survival fulfills a prophecy. Well using the power of plot convenience, the Toa finally go on the offensive, Tahu and Lewa trap the first three in glass (which I’m sure will do a great job of holding creature who can break apart solid stone and ice), while Gali uses their own stupidly against them to knock one out. But there are still two left so let’s use teamwork. Pohatu ties their hands, Onua drops rocks on them, Tahu melts the rocks, Gali cools and lava and Kopaka freezes them. ..... Why not just freeze them outright instead of doing all those other things? Seems like you could do that easily. Perhaps Kopaka knew he could, but chose not to so his stupid friends could feel special. But aren't we forgetting something? Oh yes there’s still one more evil lizard man left, and he’s attack the midgets. Now instead of doing the sensible thing like, running for cover. The two just stand there and Takua allows himself to get blasted by fear. Jaller does the always intelligent move of running up to an enemy and grabbing its magic staff, the result of which pumps him chock full of fear energy which sadly kills him. Somehow. I've stopped caring. Moved by the sacrifice, Takua realizes he must fulfill the demands of the plot and puts on the mask Becoming Takanuva! Toa of Light! DUN DUN DUUUUUUU THIS WAS OBVIOUS FROM THE BEGINNING! Takanuva does what any sensible Toa would do after achieving the powers of light, and that’s create a giant statue of himself in the middle of a sacred temple, because selfishness and egotism are ideal qualities for a hero. Another shoddy blocking detail here: Jaller gets pumped full of fear and that’s fine, we see the Toa jump up behind the Rahkshi, but as soon as Takua becomes a Toa he blasts the Rahkshi with some light energy, were the Rahkshi and Toa just standing around for like three minutes while the death scene played out? With that out the way Takanuva briefly mourns his friend before ripping apart his enemy’s corpses and making a vehicle. According to him it will lead him to Makuta because “What is the Makutas, will return to him” How do you know that? Did you read the script? Is the script in one of those compartments? Well, anyway Hahli shows up and places Jallers mask on the vehicle, a mask she obviously took for his monument so in addition to gloating and unprofessional game conduct we can add “grave robber” to Hahli’s resume. Takanuva says he has to face Makuta alone because the other Toa are incompetent idiots that will slow him down. Well that’s not the reason he gives, but you can tell he’s thinking it. He hops aboard the vehicle which...takes him down a short tunnel to a very large and easy to spot door. What was the point of the vehicle? Also Hahli snuck aboard the very small vehicle without anybody noticing. The two enter Makutas lair and Hahli is sent away almost immediately (why did she even bother to come?) and two prepare for their final battle! What challenge will Makuta, lord of shadow be to the legendary Toa of Light? What awesomeness could this battle possibly entail...oh. “A simple game of Kolhii.” .......... Screw you LEGO. As the lamest of all lame confrontations occurs, Hahli rallies the gathered Matoran saying that they should all go down to the tunnels together and be easy fodder for the lord of evil. The smart thing to do would be to send the Toa down first, defeat Makuta and then bring everybody else down to wake up Mata Nui but that implies the characters are smart so they pointlessly endanger the lives of innocent villagers instead. It goes about as well as you expect before Takanuva pulls off his move from the beginning (foreshadowing FTW) and knocks Makuta off his feet. Makuta tells him that Mata Nui has to sleep because “awake he suffers” Takanuva suddenly decides to pull off Makutas face and two tumble into Makutas stylish indoor pool. Why does this happen? Because the plot says so (I’m sure it also fulfills a prophecy, Gali must be ecstatic) and the new combined being opens up the door and let’s them in, but not before using a brand new power to bring Jaller back to life. This also results in the door crushing the mutant. Now I could rant on end about how Jallers death is cheapened but I can appreciate the message that if even if you can save your friends, you might not be able to save yourself and it’s a Good Morale .............. WHYYYYYYYYY! HOW DID YOU DO THAT? WHAT CAUSED THIS! TELL ME! STOP NARRATING AND AH SCREW IT! Their faces glow and we see a city the end. Alright so that was Bionicle: Mask of Light. I’ll admit it’s not the worst CG kid’s film out there but good lord it’s stupid, filled with plot wholes, threads that either go nowhere or are resolved way to quickly and an ending that just makes me shake my head in shame. Alas, there are three more of these things I plan to review. Oh and believe me folks, this is just the beginning.
  22. Some of you older fans may remember the original Bionicle movie: The Mask of Light. Even some of you younger members may have seen it. In any case, this is a spoof of that film that I wrote years ago, and have decided to share. So naturally it'll probably make a lot more sense if you've seen the movie first. I'd like to add that this was inspired by another spoof of the movie I read years ago by an old member called SPIRIT. I found his spoofs of the movies hysterical, and this inspired me to write my own. Thanks, SPIRIT! I even used one of his characters, the Director. So, without further ado, I'd like to present... Bionicle the Movie: The Mask of Light: What You Didn't See CHAPTER 1: Opening/Lava Snacking ( A whole bunch of Lego bricks fall and magically form the word: LEGO. Strange, isn't it? ) ( A lake. At night. We zoom over the lake while dramatic music plays and see a city. Suddenly, all the lights in the city go out, and the words "MIRAMAX: Home Entertainment" appear. WHAT BIZARRE WORLD DO WE LIVE IN!?!?!? ) ( We go down through some mist and some birds fly by... We finally arrive at the Amaja Sand Pit. In the background, someone fiddling with some keys can be heard. ) Vakama: Stupid door... ( The sounds of a door opening and someone scrambling into position are heard. ) Vakama: Gathered friends, listen again to our legend... ( Vakama pauses for dramatic effect. ) Vakama: ...of the me. ( The director [yours truly] coughs loudly. ) Vakama: *sigh* Oh fine. ...our legend of the Bionicle. In the time before time the Great Spirit descended from the heavens carrying we, the ones called the Matoran. (actually I'm a Turaga, not a Matoran, but a certain someone wants to keep this thing simple) ( The director coughs. ) Vakama: To this paradise. We were seperate, and without purpose, (except for eating Cheese Nips) so the Great Spirit illuminated us with- I'M BLIND! Oh wait, I just blinked. Ahem, illuminated us with the three virtues: Foolery, stupidity, and density. Wait... *checks script* I mean, unity, duty and destiny... I thought mine were better though... We returned these gifts to the store and bought a pilates machine instead, and in gratitude named our island home Wal-Ma- Uh, Mata Nui after the Great Spirit himself. But our endless Cheese Nip eating was not to last, for Mata Nui's brother, The Makuta, was jealous of these low-calorie snacks and betrayed him, hitting him over the head with a frying pan, forcing Mata Nui into a deep slumber. The Makuta was free to "let the dogs out". And "let them out" he did. ( Dramatic music plays, and the title scene is shown. ) ( At Ta-Koro, Jaller is looking for Takua. ) Jaller: Takua! Ugh, he's got less Cheese Nips in his head than a Cheeze It box... Takua! ( Jaller sees Takua's Kolhii stick leaning against the wall of an arch. ) Jaller: Aw, Takua. Hmph. He better not make me late for my yoga class... ( Jaller walks through the arch and down a winding path into the lava caves. ) Jaller: Takua! Takuuuuuuaaaa! ( Meanwhile, Takua is looking past a lava river at a totem. Pewku is with him. ) Takua: Look Pewku! *points to totem* ( Pewku is completely still and silent. ) Takua: Uh, hello? *waves hand in front of Pewku* ( The cardboard Pewku falls over. ) Director: Where's Pewku!?!? ( Pewku walks into the cave wearing a towel. Upright. On her hind legs. ) Pewku: Geez, can't a girl take a shower? *pauses* Are we filming? Takua: *sigh* Yes! Pewku: Oops! Director: Actors... ( Pewku promptly throws her towel into the lava and gets on all sixes. Takua starts hopping across the rocks. ) Takua: Thats- Why- They call- me- Cheese for brains! ( Takua stops on a rock near the other side and admires the totem. ) Takua: Ooh, I bet no one's ever been this suicidal before... Jaller: Takua! Takua (taken by surprise): *high pitched girly scream* Jaller: Relax, it's just me! Takua: Uh... *high pitched girly scream* Jaller: Oh cut it out! Takua: Fine... Jaller: What are you doing down here alone!? We're supposed to be at the kolhii match! It's the Superball... Takua: Oh, oh yeah, sorry Mr. No Fun. Jaller: I do too have fun... Takua: Where? Jaller: I think I left it in my other suit. Takua: Yeah, well, hang on a sec', I just gotta check out that totem. Jaller: You're hopping across lava to look at a stupid warning totem? ( Suddenly, a bright light shines from above, even though they're in a cave. ) Deep Loud Voice: Don't diss the totem. Jaller: *high pitched girly scream* Y-yes sir! Right away sir! Anything you say sir! I am your servant sir! DLV: Let's not overdo it, okay? ( The bright light fades. ) Director: Well I must say, that was odd. Continue. Jaller: *gulp* Um, you're hopping across lava to look at an extremely intelligent warning totem? Takua: That pretty much sums it up. Jaller: Do you know what Turaga Vakama would say? Takua: Uh... "Where's my cane?" Jaller: Okay, bad example. Do you know what Turaga Onewa would say? Takua: *sighs and clears throat* "Let's break big expensive things!" Jaller: Another bad example... Let's try Turaga Nokama. Takua: "Irresponsible"... Jaller: Now come on! Takua (hopping across the last of the rocks): Be- Right- There! (on the other side) Ha ha! Jaller: What's so funny? Takua: I landed on a pile of gravel. It tickled. Jaller: *sigh* (sarcastically) Very impressive... Takua: Encore? Jaller: No! Now let's go! ( Takua takes the totem off it's pedestal. ) Takua: Unh! DLV: You have offended the spirit of the totem! ( Suddenly, the tunnel starts to rumble. ) Takua: Oh no! ( Rocks fall from the ceiling and the rocks in the river go under. ) Jaller: Takua, get out of there! ( Several rocks fall around Takua and he drops the totem, which falls into the lava. Takua tries to grab it, but it's too late. Suddenly, the Mask of Light comes to the surface. ) Takua: Jaller, look! Jaller: (seriously) Very impressive! I think... A great kanohi mask! ( Takua takes it out of the lava. ) Takua: The lava! It buuurns! ( The mask cools off and Takua looks at words written on the back of the mask. ) Takua: Wow, I've never seen this language... Well, except on the back of that one Cheeze It box... Jaller: Takua! Takua: Hold your rahi! *Jaller holds Pewku* I'm coming! Pewku: Put me down... Jaller: ( Suddenly, the tunnel rumbles and a huge wave of lava comes down the river. ) Takua: Here! Take the mask! ( Takua throws the mask to Jaller. Seeing as he couldn't hit the side of a barn, it goes into the lava. Luckily, as we saw before, it floats. So Jaller reaches over the river and grabs it. The wave gets closer, and so Takua throws his board into the lava and heads across the river. Unfortunately, he's slower than a snail on that thing, so the wave closes in to engulf him. ) Takua: Typical... ( A blue blur flies by, saving Takua from imminent doom, so close that Jaller didn't see it. In a moment Takua sees it's Tahu in a blue bathrobe. ) Takua: Ah, Toa Tahu! Tahu: *throws bathrobe into lava* Okay, first of all, it's Toa Tahu Nuva. Second of all, I was taking a shower when the Stunts Coordinator grabs me and throws me into the lava! Shee... Third of all, my line: Chronicler! Sight-seeing, were you? Takua (sarcastically) : Sure, and after that I figured I'd go swimming down here. Tahu: Awesome. Well, let's take a closer look at those falls! ( Tahu does that thing where he flies over the falls, while Takua pretends to scream and be terrifed as he takes pictures all the way down. Tahu sticks his swords in the wall and they stop. ) Tahu: So, Takua, this view close enough? Takua: I'll say! Director: Takua! Takua: Oh, I mean: *high pitched girly scream* Director: Much better. ( Takua looks up to see the lava headed right for them. ) Takua: Incoming! Tahu: Cool! Takua: ... Aren't you going to activate your shield? Tahu: Nope. Takua: ARE YOU INSANE!?!?!? Tahu: Yep. What's your point? Takua: TURN THE MASK ON YOU SUICIDAL MANIAC!!! Tahu: Aw, you're no fun... ( Tahu activates his mask of shielding and the lava goes by harmlessly. He then starts climbing back up the wall. ) THE END There's chapter 1 and I hope you like it so far! I intend to post chapters weekly, so chapter 2 should be up by Sat. Jan. 12th. On an unrelated note, boy does BZPower have a lot of smileys.
  23. Hey guys! I'm working on a bit of a tribute project for good ol' Bionicle, and I've been trying to find high-quality downloads of Nathan Furst's scoring for the movies, as well as the score for The Legend Reborn. If possible, I'd like it to be official enough that some support goes to the original composers rather than just ripping an MP3 from a host site. The downloads and links from BioMedia Project seem to have some issues for me, unfortunately. Any other fanvid makers out there who can point me in the direction of some good links? Thanks!
  24. I posted this on this blog back in September for Mask of Light's tenth anniversary, but it was deleted in the hacking, so I thought I'd repost this gem for everyone to see again. Watch and be amazed. Or cringe in horror. Both reactions are appropriate, really. -TNTOS-
  25. Hi everyone. I posted this to remind you that it's the 10th anniversary of Mask of Light this year. The movie was released on September 16, 2003. Thought I'd let everyone on BZP know that. Goodbye
