  1. Hi, guys! I know that Bionicle had ended a year ago sadly, but let’s be happy about Bionicle for something else. You see, this year, 2017, is the 10th anniversary of Bionicle’s 2007 storyline. I know that this year that we got the music album for the movie, Bionicle: Mask of Light’s 14th anniversary, but if you think this isn’t enough for this year, then let’s celebrate the 10th anniversary of the 2007 storyline. That would enlighten you more. Let me tell you the 2007 storyline: The 2007 storyline is about the Toa Inika’s quest to find the Kanohi Ignika, aka the Mask of Life, continuing by going into the sea. It starts off when Matoro successfully got the Kanohi Ignika, aka the Mask of Life, in the 2006 storyline, since the Mask has a mind of its own, doesn’t want to be used in the island of Voya Nui while a hostile Rahi called the Kardas Dragon makes Matoro let go of the Mask. It flies to the sea around Voya Nui while the Toa Inika follow it. However, they can’t get into the water, but their ally, Axonn, shows a way to get there by leading the Toa to the Cord, which is under the island. The Mask falls onto the sea floor. In the sea, there is an underwater city called Mahri Nui, which is near the Cord, and it is inhabited by Matoran. A Po-Matoran named Dekar notices the Mask. A group of evil and mutated warlords based on sea creatures, called the Barraki, notice the Mask as well, and plans to get it to defeat the Great Spirit Mata Nui and take over the Matoran Universe. Long ago, the Barraki were once normal people who rules some parts of the Matoran Universe, but they later on rebelled against the Great Spirit, but thry were stopped by the Brotherhood of Makuta and were sent to a prison called the Pit. However, when the Great Cataclysm happened, they escaped, but a magical substance called the Pit Mutagen mutated the Barraki into sea-creature-based monsters that only breathe water, so they’re trapped underwater. They think that the Mask can reverse all that, too, so they are going to get their hands on it. They lead armies of various sea creatures that they’re based on. The Barraki also threaten people from Mahri Nui. When Dekar is having the Mask, it uses its incredible powers, which cause Dekar to believe that the Mask is too dangerous for anyone to have, so he wants to destroy it. However, Barraki also notice Dekar having the Mask, so they want to take it from him, but he is defending himself. Also however, the Barraki’s leader, Pridak, successfully gets the Mask, but it is using its powers. When the Toa Inika arrived to the bottom of the Cord that leads them to Mahri Nui, the Mask transforms them into their new underwater forms called the Toa Mahri. The team gets newly transformed weapons and masks, but their elemental powers no longer are mixed with lightning, making them normal, and the team only breathe water. That’s the winter 2007 part of the story. Here is the summer part: After the transformation, the Toa meet with Mahri Nui’s people and the Toa say that they will protect the people from the Barraki. The Toa find powerful guns called the Cordak Blasters, and they go look for the Mask of Life. When the Mask noticed the Dekar’s life is in danger, it saves his life by transforming him into a duplicate of another being named Hydraxon, who was killed during the Cataclysm. Hydraxon’s memories bury Dekar’s memories, so the duplicate thinks that he’s the real Hydraxon. He is also the jailer of the Pit, so he goes searching and recapturing escaped prisoners. He captures Matoro and puts him in jail. Along the way, the Makuta of Metru Nui, in his Antidermis form and who got out of the Piraka’s damaged Antidermis tank, finds one of Hydraxon’s robots called the Maxilos, which guard the Pit, and possesses it like a ghost, making the robot as his new “body”, his disguise to avoid being noticed by his enemies, and container for his Antidermis. When he finds Matoro, he frees him because he wants to help him, even though that Makuta is evil. He tells Matoro to reanimate a dead Toa named Tuyet, who got killed during the Cataclysm, which Makuta caused, and get a magical stone called the Nui Stone. However, a tyrant named Karzahni, who is looking for the Toa Mahri, who he abused when they were once Matoran, notices the group and destroys Tuyet. Makuta defeats Karzahni and tells Matoro that in order to save Mata Nui from death, he and the Toa Mahri have to destroy the Cord in order to do it. Then, Makuta and Matoro separate. While the Toa Mahri are fighting the Barraki, when Hydraxon notices the Mask, he remembers from Dekar’s memories that he believes that the Mask is dangerous, so Hydraxon tries to destroy it, but he is stopped by Hahli. Along the way, when a tiny Rahi called a Gadunka touches the Mask, it enlarges the creature into the size so big that it can eat a person. The Gadunka believes that the Mask should be its, so he goes to get and keep it to itself. Jaller tries to get the Mask, but is stopped by Hydraxon while Matoro freezes Makuta to stop him from doing planned bad things. Then, Jaller accidentally frees Makuta from his icy prison by using Jaller’s fire powers. Later, Hydraxon and Makuta fight each other, allowing the Toa to get the Mask again. While the Barraki are having a problem with each other about one of them betraying the others, the Toa evacuated Mahri Nui’s people, so they can destroy the Cord. Before they do, they fight against the Gadunka and its two giant allies. The Toa defeat them before Hydraxon shows up to confront the Toa. The Toa convince Hydraxon that they are not criminals and they need the Mask for their good deed, so Hydraxon lets them go. The Toa destroy the Cord by using their Blasters, so the island of Voya Nui, which the Cord connected to Mahri Nui, sinks into the water, destroying Mahri Nui along the way. The Barraki notice Makuta, so they fight and defeat him by destroying the Maxilos robot that he is possessing, but he disappears after that. The Barraki then go after the Toa for the Mask. Matoro tries to find somewhere where he can use the Mask to save Mata Nui’s life, but he notices that Mata Nui is dead. Matoro feels very sad. However, he doesn’t lose hope, so he goes to find a way to revive Mata Nui while the other Toa buy Matoro some time by fighting the Barraki. Matoro goes to a waterfall, which Voya Nui was heading, where the Mask tells him to wear it. When the Mask shows Matoro that his friends are in danger because of the Barraki, Matoro uses its power to transport the other Toa to safety by taking them to Metru Nui and have them breathe both air again and water in order to save their lives from the Barraki. Then, the Mask also tells him that he has to sacrifice his life to use the Mask’s power to revive Mata Nui. Matoro does so, so Mata Nui is revived, and the whole Matoran Universe is saved. Everyone in there is happy, but when Turaga Vakama tells the Toa Mahri about Matoro’s fate, they feel sad about him. The people of Metru Nui commemorate Matoro for his heroic actions and make a statue of him to remember him as a great hero who saved everyone. Meanwhile, the Toa Nuva meet a guy named Artakha, who gives them new armor and then teleports them to a new place. The end of the 2007 storyline, and that part about the Toa Nuva being in the new place is where the 2008 storyline started. To celebrate, let me ask you this: What are your fond memories about the storyline and/or what do you like about it? For me, I like the Barraki. They look very cool, including that the fact that they are based on different sea creatures. It’s interesting that 2007 is where canister sets started to look different from each other from that on rather than having the same body type like in 2001-2006. I like the new pieces that look like the sea creatures’ parts, and I like how the Barraki look like sea creatures much. The eye pieces are neat as you can plug them into the Barraki’s heads. The mandibles are neat as you can open and close them. Their weapons are cool, but their Squid Launcher is hard to use to shoot Sea Squids. I also wish that the Barraki could have mouths that open and close. The Sea Squids look cool. I like their yellowish-orangish and bluish-greenish colors. Plus, it’s neat that anyone who has Squid Launchers can have clip pieces that store the Squids. One thing about the Squids, though, is that they look more like leeches than squids, so it’s weird to call them Squids, you see. Kalmah is neat because he is based on a squid, has two giant tentacles, and has three eyes. Takadox has glow-in-the-dark pieces, and he has nice knives that look like a mantis’ claws. I like the red spikes, too. He is quite the tallest of the Barraki. One thing about him, though, is that head is a bit hollow. Ehlek looks very cool because of his green spikes and talons. The talons are like Wolverine’s claws from Marvel. However, he doesn’t have a lower mouth. Carapar looks very cool, too, because of his giant claws and new armor pieces. The use of of the color, yellow, is good. However, Carapar doesn’t have a lower mouth, either, and he doesn’t have another claw. Mantax looks neat because of his claws, red spikes, and his upper body looking like a manta ray, but, again, he doesn’t have a lower mouth, and his arms look uneven. Pridak looks very cool because of his fins, blades, long feet, and the red blotches on his white pieces. The small sets look neat. I like the Matoran’s blades and launchers. The Hydruka look cool because they sort of look like scorpions with launchers on their tails. Nice teeth on them, too. The blue Hydruka has a nice glow-in-the-dark as well. The Toa Mahri look awesome, as they look like commandos with giant cannons. I like their breathing tubes, which make the Toa look like that they adapted to water. The blasters look cool, but what’s troubling about them is that you can’t shoot the ammo from them unless you loosen the ammo in the cannons. Jaller looks cool, and he has a nice sword. It’s neat that he has a Hannah crab to be his animal sidekick that hold his blaster. Hahli looks amazing, and she has a nice mask, wing-like fins on her back, and that giant claw of hers. I am not too fond of the green secondary color, though, because it makes her look like a Toa of the Green rather than a Toa of Water. Kongu looks awesome because he looks like a commando with two blasters. I like his mask because it’s neat that he has a green bulb-like thing attached to the mask. Hewkii looks very cool because of his giant blade in his left hand, blades on his right arm, mask, spikes on his thighs, and chains. However, how he wears his mask in his set is weird, and his arms look uneven. Plus, where’s his right hand? Nuparu looks cool. I like his shield. However, he has some restrictions on his wrists and ankles. Matoro looks cool (Get it, because he’s the Toa of Ice? Lol! ), as he has those big claws and giant black tubes. However, his arms look uneven, again. I like Hahli’s, Nuparu’s, and Matoro’s visors because they are neat. But, why do they have red eyes? Now, the large sets. Nocturn looks awesome and beautiful! I mean, this dude that four arms, many glow-in-the-dark pieces, spikes, bulky-ness, transparent blue pieces, swords, a Squid Launcher, and a tentacle, man! The Gadunka looks very cool, as its head is so big that its can eat a person and has a lot of pointy teeth. It’s neat that the Gadunka set uses Ehlek spikes for the teeth. I like the claws, glow-in-the-dark head, use of the blue and silver pieces, and it’s cool that it has a Squid Launcher. One thing I find weird about its set is the neck because it’s very thin. Hydraxon looks awesome because of his various weapons. I like his poseable and clawed hands. Maxilos is mighty great because of his mask, Titan-size, big sword, claws, and Cordak Blaster. I like his flexible torso. Spinax looks great because of his spikes. His head would look like that you could use it to make a seventh Barraki. Lesovikk looks cool because of his blade and shoulder pads. His Sea Sled looks cool, too, as it has a Cordak Blaster mounted in it and the landing gear. It’s like Takanuva and Ussalnui set in 2003. Karzahni looks awesome, as he has chains, spikes, those Takadox knive pieces on his torso, clawed and spikes hands, armor, and cape. His head/mask looks cool because of the horns and spikes, but why can’t he have a one-piece plastic version of his mask? I like the shades of green on him. One thing that I find weird about him, though, is how his neck is built. Sarda and Ibris look cool, like the other two Matoran sets in the winter half of 2007. I like their unique blades, claws, and masks. Their underwater trap looks amazing because of the spikes and its function to trap Karzahni. The playsets, well, look great. It’s cool that some of the Rahi can be used a vehicles for the Toa Mahri to use. They have great weapons and functions. The Barraki have cool-looking mutated sea animals that they have for soldiers. However, not every minfigure, who are based on the Toa Mahri and Barraki, are equal. There is no minifigure for Carapar. All of their heads are messed up. Plus, not all 12 of the characters are in one set, like the one in 2006. Next, the combo models. The Ehlek-Carapar-Mantax one, aka the Pit War Tortoise, looks very cool, but it has a weird neck and stiff points on its ankles. The Kalmah-Takadox-Pridak one, aka Zyglak, looks amazing! It looks like a lizard well! The Carapar-Mantax-Nuparu-Matoro combo, aka the Manutri, looks very cool because it has both a Squid Launcher and two Cordak Blasters, man! It looks kind of cute, too. Too bad that there are combiners for the other Toa Mahri or the large sets. As for the story and media, I think the story is very good. It’s been told through comics, novels, and online serials. The Barraki are cool characters, and they have some good character development. I feel bad that they got mutated into monsters after they escaped from prison. It’s interesting that they don’t get along or others, similar to the Piraka. I see that Brutaka was trying to team up with the Barraki, but they betrayed him, just like the Piraka. It’s not like in Marvel where there are the Sinister Six. Plus, Takadox was secretly a traitor to the Barraki as he was a servant to the Brotherhood of Makuta, the very people who stopped the Barraki from trying to conquer the Matoran Universe before they got imprisoned in the Pit. The Barraki have very cool powers, like Carapar with his super-strength and Takadox with his ability to hypnotize people. It’s also cool that some of their armies have some Rahi from 2002. Plus, each of the Barraki is from his own species of people. I wish there is a seventh Barraki, though. Nocturn is a cool guy. He may be dumb, but he is cool. Dekar is a troubled guy who didn’t know how to handle the Mask of Life. He could’ve just hide it or give it to the Toa Mahri. I felt bad that he was in danger, so the Mask was trying to the poor guy by turning him into a duplicate of Hydraxon. It’s sad that the original one died. It’s also sad that Dekar is currently trapped in the duplicate’s mind, so the duplicate can’t remember that he was Dekar. Dekar’s friends must be worried about the poor guy. This Hydraxon acted like a stubborn jerk he believed that all strangers are escaped prisoners without letting them prove their innocence. The Toa Mahri has a hard time convincing this guy. Makuta is a cool dude. He’s like a ghost. I get that he is trying to be nice to Matoro by helping him out with saving Mata Nui’s life, but he does have an evil move in his sleeve about this. Plus, this guy doesn’t want any opponent to mess with him. The Toa Mahri are great characters with very good character development. Hewkii is grateful that he learned swimming lessons from Hahli. Hahli is a clever hero who knows what to do in order to help her team. Jaller, Kongu, and Nuparu are good characters. They all are good friends to each other. I feel bad they are too are stuck being underwater because they only breathe water. Now, here came Matoro. This dude too was conflicted, but he knew what is the right thing to do. Although he should’ve not talk to evil strangers, he was still a good guy. This dude never gave up on reviving Mata Nui and saving the Matoran Universe. I feel very sad that he sacrificed his own life to use the Mask of Life’s power to revive Mata Nui. Before he died, he also saved his friends from the Barraki by bring them to Metru Nui and make them able to breathe both air again and water. Matoro was such a very great hero. He saved everybody in the Matoran Universe. Though, it’s sad that he died. (crying in tears) I feel bad for Lesovikk for the fact that he lost his team and based himself for it. This also makes him want to kill his enemies, which is against the Toa Code. Sarda and Ibris are good characters. They are good friends to each other and Lesovikk. Karzahni is a cool villain. He doesn’t want anyone to mess with him, and is ruthless. I felt bad that Karzahni was driven insane by Teridax when his mind was damaged by Teridax. It’s cool to see the Piraka again for a brief moment. They got mutated into snakes, and fought the Toa Mahri before they get taken away by Axonn. It’s neat to hear about the Toa Nuva’s adventures during the events of the 2007 storyline. They have been doing some strange and good stuff to get ready for the Great Spirit. Lesovikk and Karzahni May have their own thing with each other, but they could’ve get more involved with the 2007 storyline. Lesovikk could’ve made new Toa friends with the Toa Mahri, and the Toa would try to help him feel better. The Matoran duo would help the Toa, too. Karzahni would also help the Barraki get the Mask of Life and defeat the Toa Mahri, so Karzahni would have more ruling power and take the Toa Mahri as his prisoners again. Makuta could’ve fought the Toa team as well. There are a lot of things that make me feel annoyed. That Bionicle Legends about the Toa Inika’s travels in the Cord shouldn’t have cancelled. It would be nice to look at their adventures more. I heard that Nuparu was supposed to have his Aqua Blaster Blade and Carapar with his two claws in their sets, so these should’ve happened. Kongu should’ve kept his melee combat weapon, which is transformed from his Laser Crossbow. Plus, brown ain’t on the “Stone” characters much. Sad. I have no idea how did these happen. It would be cool to see a set for the mutated Brutaka. Plus, there should have been a combined set similar to the Vezon and Kardas set. Too bad there wasn’t. (Though I would imagine that if that could happen, it would be a mix of the Gadunka, Hydraxon, and Maxilos and Spinax set, and this mix would be a powerful and giant Rahi or a warrior). It would also be nice to see the outcome of that fight between Brutaka and Maxilos. The online serials were introduced in 2007. I thought they are cool as they tell more stuff in the storyline. I wish there could have been a sequel to Bionicle Heroes in 2006. (Though if it would happen, it would be based on the 2007 storyline) So, guys, what are your fond memories of the storyline, what do you like about it, what’s your favorite 2007 set, favorite character(s) in 2007, favorite moment in the storyline, what things remind you of the 2007 storyline, and/or how would you celebrate it? For me, well, my favorite sets are Kalmah, Ehlek, Nocturn, Jaller, Hahli, Kongu, Gadunka, Hydraxon, Maxilos and Spinax, and Karzahni, and my favorite characters are Jaller, Hahli, Matoro, Kalmah, Takadox, Pridak, Makuta, and Hydraxon. The things that remind me are: 1. Hero Factory’s Breakout storyline and the part in there about Furno fighting and recapturing Jawblade. 2. The Serpentine from Ninjago being released from their prison to terrorize people and do something horrible along the way (the Barraki) 3. The Hypnobrai (Takadox) 4. Lego’s Atlantis theme 5. The Lizard from Marvel (Zyglak) 6. That scene in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace in 1999 where there is this underwater city. 7. That one part in a Star Wars TV series called Star Wars: The Clone Wars in 2008-2014.
  2. Lately I have noticed that I'm not particularly fond of too many shows on television. By this I'm specifically talking about sitcoms be them Seinfeld, How I Met Your Mother, Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory, and so on. Sitcoms are a type of show that I've watched for most of my life. I've gotten into a few of them, and I've generally enjoyed them over the years. But recently, I've grown tired of seeing one too many episodes of Big Bang Theory and Modern Family and I started to stop and think. It's fun to watch a show when I'm not thinking. I get to experience the jokes and playful humor without a second thought. And hey, the first two to three times watching an episode, things are generally funny. But then I stopped to look at these episodes and I realize something. I feel like these shows were not made for me. Let me try to explain myself a little here. Currently I am a twenty five year old man who has found work off and on as a baker. I define my sexual orientation as demi-homosexual and I define my gender identity as gender queer. I've lived my entire life overweight and my self esteem is generally on the low side. I have suffered from depression and anxiety among other things. I tend to let my emotions get in the way of seeing the world for what it really is at times, and I have to remind myself that I don't even know what this world is like to begin with. I often remind myself that the place I'm currently in, both emotionally and physically is... well, for lack of a better word, weird. I'm not sure there was ever a day beyond fifth grade that I ever felt normal, but I think I've probably mentioned this on my blog more than a few times in various entries. I suppose I could start with the obvious here and point out that while I'm not straight, most sitcoms revolve around straight men. These are characters that pursue relationships without a second thought. Ted Mosby on HIMYM seemed to date a fair number of women while searching for his one true love. Even if I were to ignore the fact that these relationships are heteronormative, this is something I personally find unrelatable. The very idea of me being comfortable enough to pursue even a casual relationship with someone else may as well be a work of fantasy. It's a bit of a strange feeling to be detached from a show's everyman on that level alone. Well then what about a show that actually has two men in a relationship? It is true that Modern Family has this, and these characters Mitchell and Cameron don't seem to have dated as much as say Jerry Seinfeld or Ted Mosby (Or Ross and Joey from Friends). They are two men in a serious relationship from the start with an adoptive daughter starting a family and a life together. Before I start complaining about these two, let me just say that to me this is a significant step forward in media and growing up I honestly never thought I would see anything like this in a television show. Love between men is something very hard to come by from what I've seen, and with anything like this I feel that in a way it's huge without really being anything all that tremendous at all. That being said, I personally don't see myself being represented much in either of these characters. Let me elaborate a little bit. It's true I am not in a relationship, serious or otherwise, and it is true I don't have an adoptive daughter and I am by no means starting a family myself. But let's put all of that aside for now and talk about why I don't relate to two characters on television who are gay, like me. For this I will start with Cameron. Cameron is generally, in my opinion, a walking, talking stereotype of what straight people think all gay people are like. Overly feminine, prone to drama, a love of arts and crafts with a sense of style and body language that is, generally speaking, flamboyant. As a demi-sexual and even gender queer individual (who tends to score as more feminine than masculine on gender identity quizzes) I can't help but watch this character and scream in my head "THIS IS NOT WHAT I'M LIKE." To me personally there is nothing quite so disheartening as to see a gay character on television that does not in any way represent anything that I am or anything that I stand for. For example, Cameron decides to come out to his grandmother (who is a bigot) that he is in love with Mitchell, has a daughter and a family and is going to get married. His grandmother responds with a close minded statement (accusing their identities as gay men to be the cause of a storm of all things) and Cameron's reaction? He's just glad his grandmother ultimately agreed to attend their wedding (in spite of Mitchell pointing out that she is bringing a sign and protesting gay marriage). Cameron shows no remorse that this family member will not accept him. He goes on without a care in the world, and honestly this is the scene that makes my stomach flip every time. I spent most of my life being closeted from my family, I have worried for years about whether or not I would be accepted (and, hey, even though I'm out of the closet I still struggle with this with my parents). This is something that to me is a huge deal. It's something that impacts my relationship with my family to this day and it's something I find utterly disgusting that people like me have to deal with because it is disgusting. This exchange to me feels like something out of a bad fantasy. It strikes me as totally unrealistic and it is why I hate his character for his carefree attitude towards bigotry. Granted his character has been about breaking the mold and not conforming to certain stereotypes, but this scene is something that I personally will never accept. Now then, let's talk about Mitchell. While neither of these characters truly captures what it's like to deal with homophobia in the modern day in my opinion, Mitchell does have his moments. Namely the relationship Mitchell has with his father. He talks about being closeted to his dad up until college when he finally built up enough courage to tell his father Jay that he is gay. According to Mitchell, his father used to call him every week or so when he was away at college to catch up. However, after he came out to Jay, those phone calls stopped. Mitchell is clearly upset about this and honestly this is another scene that sticks out to me. This is the only moment that his character feels real to me. This is the one scene in the entire show where I feel like I can even remotely relate to his character. I've been there. I am there now. Granted my relationship with my parents isn't the same as Mitchell's relationship to his father, but I often feel like my family just doesn't understand what it's like to be in my position. Sometimes they say things without thought and I get hurt because of it. It happens. Despite this one scene, however, I largely feel that these two characters do not relate to me. And that is shame considering, well, I thought they would. Both of them follow designers, be it a white couch or a decorative glass bowl, they seem to be into trendy, upscale material possessions. Meanwhile, I may spend some time planning my outfits, but I'm about as fashionable as a rock, honestly. I don't keep up with trendy things, and unless it's plating a dessert at the end of a five course dinner, I don't have much of an eye for style or the finer things in life. At one point, while their friend Pepper Saltsman plans their wedding, his assistant says at one point that planning a gay wedding is much more difficult than a heteronormative wedding because both grooms have such high standards. And um, again, THAT'S NOT WHAT I'M LIKE. When I'm watching characters like this, characters that are supposed to represent people like me, I can't help but feel that this was not intended to cater to me. This was intended to cater to people who think this is what I'm actually like. It feels isolating and on some level lonelier than I could have ever imagined. Well, this entry has gone on for quite a few paragraphs. While I could go on, I feel like I've at least covered the gist of things. Keep in mind, these are my opinions and my opinions alone. Not every gender queer gay dude thinks the same, and I fully expect there are going to be people to disagree with me. But these are just opinions from someone who never really felt like he fit in to begin with.
  3. I learned a new term a few months back- "Transmedia Storytelling". It refers to a story told through multiple media, which may include film, television, print, digital and interactive media, comics, and various products. The concept is arguably as old as storytelling itself- after all, Greek myths were told orally, recorded in print, performed as plays, and represented in art through paintings and sculpture, and the trend for novelisations, comic book adaptations and other supplementary material for popular films has been going on for decades. But when I first heard the term "Transmedia," the very first thing I thought of was Bionicle. So, this post is gonna be a bit of a look into how Bionicle has used transmedia strategies successfully over the years, some aspects that let it down towards the end, as well as how they could potentially be used in future to make Bionicle a massive global brand. Bionicle seems to have really been a pioneer in terms of transmedia storytelling, in that it wasn't told through any one "primary" medium,(like how Star Wars is a film series first and a book/comic/game/animated TV series second), nor did its various media break off into separate continuities ala Pokemon. All the different media contributed towards one unified story- but it was in pieces! Back in 2001-2003, you could read the Hapka novels and get what felt like a cohesive, complete narrative, or you could play MNOG and watch the online episodes and get an equally "complete" narrative. But if you only consumed the online content, you'd never know about the Shadow Toa. If you only read the books, you'd never know about the Toa's first encounter with Makuta himself. Just like with the sets themselves, the consumer had to put all the pieces together to get the full picture. The sheer depth of the online content was remarkable. You could spend hours and hours on Bionicle.com playing the games, learning about the island and going through the chronicles. The world it created was so incredibly detailed, the characters were quirky and endearing, and it made the island of Mata Nui feel like a place that you loved to visit. And it was available to anyone with an Internet connection, completely free. Brilliant. But starting around 2004, the online content was drastically stripped back. The storytelling focus shifted to the DVD movies, as well as to the books. Both required the consumer to spend money to get the content, and that's not always something that young children are prepared or able to do unless they already have some investment in the characters. Older fans from the beginning who were still engaged kept going with the story content, and the books remained excellent, but it was becoming harder and harder for new fans to get on board. 2006 marked an interesting time in Bionicle's marketing. LEGO started producing a bunch of content designed to draw in new fans with a dark, urban, "street" feel to it, but had little or no relation to the actual storyline (Think the Piraka Rap, Bionicle Heroes, Save the Band, etc). The sets sold well, and so the brand was promoted successfully, but it didn't really help with the storytelling problem as far as the canon storyline was concerned. The fact that they'd stopped making the movies didn't help, either. Around 2007, we got the web serials (yay! Online content!), a sorta-canon mini-movie, and Cryoshell's music. I wish they'd done more with the musical side of Bionicle- it was a great idea having a band attached to it. More of a focus on canon here, which was nice, but by this time the canon was massive, sprawling, had dozens upon dozens of characters, and was quite difficult for a casual fan to get a grasp on. One series of books and a few serials, all written by one man, were struggling to cope with the enormity of this universe. Little changed over the next few years. By the time The Legend Reborn was released, LEGO already knew they wouldn't be continuing the line, and so little effort was put into the marketing. And so it ended with a whimper. Fast forward to Gen 2. New continuity, blank slate for new fans. I have to say, it's been a bit sparse. Certainly nothing compared with the amount of content back in '01. A series of animated shorts, good animation but only one voice actor- and the start of of a book series. I personally found the book a bit disappointing- the first half had a bit of fleshing out on the Toa's arrival, while the second half is just a transcription of the events in the webisodes. There's also games for mobile devices, which is a decent start, but still not a patch on the start of G1. We have a Netflix series coming (finally!), which might well bring the story to life properly, but at the moment, I'll confess that I'm not quite ready to get my hopes up. Sorry to be a bit negative, but I really do think that Bionicle has been wasting its massive potential recently. G1 had a universe that wanted to be enormous, but the limitations on the media used to tell stories really hurt it. Laziness and stinginess, basically. If LEGO was willing to spend a significant sum of money on it, I believe that Bionicle could have eventually become a truly massive multimedia franchise, widely adored by adults and children alike. Maybe in future generations, they'll be able to take it further. So, here's a hypothetical plan designed to mimic the story arcs of G1 (though I wouldn't want it to be a complete repeat, plot details should vary), incorporating multiple media. (spoilered for length) More 2001-2003 story: This is where the biggest risks happen. Start with online content, a MNOG-style game released in chapters, and some viral content giving glimpses of the setting. Make kids love the Matoran (or equivalents) like they love Minions- keep the Toa out of the way for now, but bring out the sets, definitely. Books, comics, games would be good additions. This is all leading up to the release of the first theatrical movie. Now, here's the tricky bit: In the event of the first movie's success, they need to be ready to get the sequel (Bohrok saga equivalent?) out, fast- two years at the longest. Requires extensive collusion between set designers, story team and everyone involved with the movie. And have a third one start early production during this time. The third movie would be basically a theatrical equivalent of Mask of Light. In the time between the release of the second and third films, an animated TV series would tell a story similar to the Borohk Kal one- something that's engaging and could make up a series-length arc, but doesn't actually have anything too important to the over-arching plot and so doesn't confuse those that only watch the films. And yeah, I know, they can't put out a feature film every year. I suggest it be done in trilogies. 2004-05's equivalent- a flashback involving a different set of characters, would be great material for a longer-running animated series. The sheer length of it makes it seem much more appropriate to TV than to movies. The sorts of online content that would be appropriate to Metru Nui would be fun to explore- perhaps some codebreaking, riddles, puzzle games etc could be incorporated, as well as serials, character blogs, etc. Next up is the Legends saga, with another film trilogy. Whether or not any TV series ran alongside it is up in the air, but having books and comics elaborate on the characters' adventures (particularly villain backstories) would be great. After that is where I'd really change it up. Two animated series. One taking place on Bara Magna, in the year before Mata Nui arrives. One taking place in the Matoran Universe, under Teridax's reign. The former would have a short run, and lead up into the next set of films, that have Mata Nui's arrival and the defeat of Makuta, while the MU series would run all the way through that storyline. After that? Who knows. There would still be stories to tell, I'm sure. I've focused mostly on the "big" media here since I was trying to wrap my head around how a film series could possibly work, though the online content is not to be underestimated. Telling the one story across multiple media to the extent Bionicle managed in the early years is something that can really be worked as a strength- just look at what Star Wars is doing right now, with the range of spin-off series and media available. Will Bionicle ever be on par with Star Wars? Maybe not, but I think it could certainly give Transformers, Lord of the Rings, maybe even various Marvel properties a run for their money. I really do hope the franchise is given its chance to shine. What do you think? What do you like/dislike about Bionicle's multi-modal storytelling? Where do you think it could go? Edit: Spoiler tag converted to "more" tag; please use spoiler tags for storyline spoilers only. -Wind-
  4. Q3 is sort of a tangent, but felt that it made sense here anyway. Go Vote!
  5. A lot of people are bothered by the differences between Hero Factory and BIONICLE, but today I was thinking about some of the story-related decisions made by the Hero Factory creators that really did do favors for the theme and its fans. Unlimited Heroes: There was something poetic about BIONICLE's "Six Heroes, One Destiny" tagline in 2001, but when you think about it, it was a creative limitation on fans that later BIONICLE story arcs did well to do away with. Back in 2001, there were a lot of constraints on BIONICLE: there were only six Toa, only six Turaga, only six villages, and only six Matoran tribes. These constraints were a limitation for fan-created stories. To create characters like Voriki, Toa of Lightning, you had to actively contradict the official story at every turn, particularly if you wanted your character to interact with the official characters overtly. Hero Factory instead encouraged fans to create their own missions and their own heroes by demonstrating that officially, there were millions of heroes far more than you'd ever get to meet in the official storyline. The online mission log, mission ticker, and testimonials even provided examples of these heroes and the variety of missions they were assigned to. This allowed fans to create their own heroes with whatever powers and personalities they could dream up. . Many Destinies: The "One Destiny" part of the classic BIONICLE tagline can be used as a metaphor for another problem the BIONICLE storyline had. Namely, its characters' quests were part of a singular overarching saga with very few gaps. There were few mechanisms for characters to get new tools, armor, or masks except with a scripted transformation. This limited what fans could do with the official characters in their own storytelling, building, and role-play. There was no way to create new forms for official characters unless they set their stories before or after the official story, because you couldn't cram a new form between two quests. And form changes were often tied closely to the idea of "destiny" most of the time, a character could only transform if they were destined to do so, and it was not a reversible process. The "Adaptive Armor" of 2008 made the characters more adaptible, but the story didn't take great advantage of it. In Hero Factory, "upgrade" mechanisms were in place from the beginning: first by refitting heroes with new gear, like in the Furno Bike or Bulk & Vapour sets, and later with more elaborate upgrades that completely altered the heroes' armor and equipment. Furthermore, missions didn't have strict placement on a linear timeline, allowing the characters to go on new missions of any importance at any point between the ones portrayed in the main story. They could even team up with people's original hero characters or face off against people's original villain characters on those missions: since each mission was more or less self-enclosed, there was very little danger that such missions would end up contradicting future missions in any way. . Powers Tied to Design: I remember that back when the Toa Inika, Toa Mahri, Phantoka, and Mistika were introduced, changes to their design were often explained by fans with the idea that they weren't designed with specific characters in mind: they were created as generic characters, and identities, colors, and powers were assigned to them later. It's not clear how true this was, but it could certainly hold true with many character designs and mask powers. The Piraka's powers and personalities had no irrefutable ties to the individual set designs, nor was there an obvious connection between many most post-2003 mask designs and their powers. Later BIONICLE waves began to improve on this: the Barraki's powers and personalities were expressly tied to the sea creature motifs they were based on, and the powers of the Makuta in 2008 were largely connected with their bat and insect motifs. The Glatorian designs also had clear elemental motifs matching the characters' tribes, though they weren't tied to powers right away since none of the characters had special powers before Mata Nui arrived. Hero Factory likewise assigned most powers and personalities based on the character and weapon designs. But the 2.0 and 3.0 heroes, despite powers that matched their new forms, did not have obvious design ties to the heroes' previous forms and characterization, other than pretty strong consistency in their color schemes. The Breakout series changed that for good. The characters returned to using their original masks or new masks designed to resemble them, and many parts of their design paid tribute to the characters' original powers, personalities, and motifs. Stringer, the sonic-themed hero, got a guitar cannon and speakers in his shoulders, while Evo, the weapons expert, got a hefty Tank Arm. Subsequent forms, equipment, and powers for the heroes remained extremely character-driven. . Powers Not Tied to Gender: BIONICLE definitely deserves praise for the decision to have female characters, which came as a result of pressure from franchise manager Lena Dixen. At the same time, the way it dealt with gender was somewhat lackluster. Gender was tied to the tribe or powers of a character: at first, only blue water-oriented characters were female, though later characters who didn't appear in the sets introduced new "female" elements like Lightning and Psionics. Like the constraints I mentioned at the beginning, this was very limiting. Even worse, this rule was more only ever broken to allow a male character to have a traditionally female element, never the other way around. The only female Glatorian or Agori to appear was a water-themed character. Hero Factory thankfully didn't come up with any rules for what characters had to be like to have certain powers, not even with regard to color scheme. This meant that your custom hero could be male or female regardless of its color scheme or powers. The official story still has downright pitiful gender ratios, but fan-created characters have absolute freedom in terms of gender, powers, colors, and motifs. . Obviously I'm not trying to hold this up as evidence that Hero Factory was better than BIONICLE as a whole. I could be here all day writing up a list of ways that the BIONICLE story was well planned and well executed, or ways that the Hero Factory story has been poorly executed. But at the same time, I appreciate these kinds of differences between the two themes especially, because they are indications that a theme's design is informed by its forerunners' strengths and weaknesses alike. It's a sort of creative evolution, even when a theme is taking lessons from wildly different themes (like how BIONICLE took lessons from themes like Alpha Team and Star Wars rather than just from Roboriders and Slizer, or how Ninjago took lessons from themes like Exo-Force and BIONICLE rather than just from the previous Ninja theme).

  7. Throughout the Hero Factory story, we noticed that there is a mysterious villain who is responsible for the Breakout and possibly the Brain Attack events. His identity isn't revealed, possibly yet. We are wondering who this villain is. For me, I think it is most likely Von Nebula because it's obvious that he always hates and wants to destroy the Hero Factory organization, I think that he obviously has the guts to do that, and in the very end of the second Breakout episode, his clawed arm is shown in darkness. I also think there is an explanation about this, and it is this: after he got trapped in his own Black Hole Orb Staff, he made a new plan to he hopes to destroy the Hero Factory successfully. First, he got out of his staff like a powerful battering ram. Then, he snuck past the organization like a ninja. I would think that he probably learned how to do that when he was a Hero named Von Ness (Aren't Heroes trained to adapt to their surroundings during missions?). Next, he used a spaceship to get out of the Makuhero Planet and hide in a rocky planet or moon, which is seen at the very beginning of the Brain Attack episode. He later found the Black Phantom and Voltix. He told them his plan. They agreed to participate in it. That's when Von Nebula started his plan. He pretended to be a completely different innocent being to trick the Hero Factory into placing his staff into its Villain Storage Unit by calling it through a connected communicating device tell them to place the staff into the room for more security and safekeeping, so Voltix can start the Breakout. Then, Von Nebula had the Black Phantom steal the plans for the entire Hero Factory for him. Black Phantom was trying to destroy the Hero Factory, but he was stopped by the Heroes. Von Nebula got the plans through his laptop, which is seen at the end of the second Breakout episode. He changed his body to almost look like the Black Phantom, which is seen in the very beginning of the Brain Attack episode, too, to probably become more powerful. He sent the Brain bugs to destroy the Hero Factory, which is also seen in the very beginning of the Brain Attack episode. The Brains caused the events in the main Brain Attack storyline and Secret Missions: Collision Course and Robot Rampage books. I also think that he will probably get involved with the new Invasion From Below storyline because I think he possibly told the Brains to create the giant hole in the Hero Building, seen in the Brain Attack episode, to probably somehow unleash the monsters, seen on the front pictures of the new, upcoming Hero Factory 2014 set bag packages, from underground to attack the Hero Factory, too, just in case they can't succeed in destroying it. I believe that the Breakout, Mission: Catch 'Em And Cuff 'Em, Black Phantom's takeover in the Hero Factory building, the Brain Attack events, and possibly the upcoming Invasion From Below events are all distractions on Hero Factory, so Von Nebula can have enough time to use the Hero Factory plans to create his own robot-making factory to create an army of evil versions of the Hero Factory Heroes to finally destroy the Hero Factory and possibly take over the galaxy and/or the whole universe. He will probably use some Anti-Quaza, which the Bkack Phantom has, to create the evil robots. He will also possibly get a lot of bad people, probably the villains that are still on the loose, to help him create both the factory and the robots, like the Hero Factory organization. I think Von Nebula would be like Makuta Teridax from Bionicle because of the way he plans and acts like the main villain in the whole Hero Factory story. Overall, that's my theory about the mysterious villain could be Von Nebula. So, what do you think about this, guys? Do you agree or disagree with me? If you don't agree about the mysterious villain could be Von Nebula, then who else?
  8. Like the title says above, who is your favorite voice actor in the Hero Factory media? For me, my favorite voice actors are the guy who voiced Stormer, the guy who voiced Furno up to the Breakout episodes, Josh Keaton, Charlie Alder, and Mark Hamill.
  9. So tell me, what is your favorite Bionicle serial? My personal favorite would probably Federation of Fear, but Dark Mirror and Destiny War are very close;.
  10. What's your favorite quote from Bionicle media? (Literature, Serials, Movies, etc.) Mine would be: "We have grown so powerful, since our arrival to Mata-Nui; Yet so frequently we are dwarfed by the mysterious forces in this place." -Toa Gali, BIONICLE Comics, Bohrok Saga Part 2: What lurks Beneath " Patience is no virtue when the ground begins to shake." -Kopaka Nuva, BIONICLE Comics, Bohrok Saga Part 3: The End of the Toa? "I know you like riddles, Matoro. Here's one: What's White, Gold and can't keep a secret to save his life?" -Jaller, Bionicle Legends #1: Island of Doom "So we find this mask-" "And quick-save the Universe! Just like past-old times!" Tahu and Lewa Nuva, Bionicle Legends #1: Island of Doom Wouldn't that be interesting? First thing I'd do, is find Makuta Teridax.... and give him a great....big... hug... -Vezon, Reign of Shadows "Entire crew decided to go take a swim all at once. Who would've thought?" -Takadox, Federation of Fear "Who shall go next? Spiriah the Sullen? Brutaka the Boorish? Vezon the Vanquisher? Or Lariska.....The wise, wonderful, and gloriously homicidal?" -Vezon, Federation of Fear "Hey guys, that's a rock. Remember me? I'm Pohatu. I do rock." Pohatu Nuva,Bionicle Legends #1: Island of Doom

Tronec paid for the server out of his own pocket, stepping up to the plate after the BCG server went offline and we were left with the prospect that we would always have files going offline from inactivity on the usual file hosting sites, and for this I am infinitely grateful.JrMasterModelBuilder has also made more contributions than I can count, and most notably he is credited with maintaining, updating, and fixing the massive Bionicle Game Pack, and providing the winning entry for the BMP4.0 site favicon.Biomaniac for the MNOLGII which I rehosted and JMMB editedTakua Me for his MNOLGII which we rehostedHUKI365 for the Bionicle TranslatorToa of the Blazing Inferno for the Tahnok-Kal discTronec, Leynok, and JrMasterModelBuilder for the bannersCrystal Matrix for the rehosted comics, VNOLG dev files, and some older archive contentJohnny Hobbs for the complete Powerpack CDToatapio Nuva for the Mask of Light CDTakua Me for his MNOLG IIIgnika Warrior for the Robot Showdown wallpapers~~Natalie Breez~~ for a few Serials and the Nestle Promo CDAlpha Dragonis for the 2001 Lego Software Demo CD and Legend of Mata Nui Trailer!toamatoro for the Hordika Bionicle Battle Zone game!TheSkeletonMan939 for the TLR trailers!Shockblast for his bannerLunekk for the BMP4.0 BannerTriggy of BS01 for missing picturesKickflip645 for reminding us where to place the LDD1.3 brick palettes for LDD1.6.LegomationStudio for letting us rehost their BIONICLE The Original Saga THE MOVIE.DownloadsGamesBionicle Game Pack 5.4 Or as Parts: 1 2 3 4MNOLGMNOLGIIVNOLGAll Individual GamesMusicBionicle Music 1.2 MP3Bionicle Music 1.2 SWFPowerpack MP3+SWFPicturesBionicle Pictures v0.5 Or as Parts: 1 2Contents:-Wallpaper-Advance Concept Art-Original Concept Art-Movie Concept Art-Legend of Mata Nui Game Artwork-Comics-Posters-Bionicle Web KitVideosBionicle Videos v0.3 Or as parts: 1 2 3 4Contents:-Bionicle Flash Episodes 2001-2006-Bionicle.com site videos 2007-2010 Or as parts: 1 2-Bionicle Character Videos-Game and Movie Trailers-Miscellaneous-Legend of Mata Nui Game Videos Originals FLVTextSerials v1.2All Individual SerialsComputer ContentComputer Content v0.1Contents:-Icons(PC and Mac)-Screensavers-Toyspins-Font Package (3x Mata Nui Font, Piraka, Rahkshi, Vahki, Voya Nui)-Translator (Rehosted)Promotional CDsBohrok-KalRahkshiOtherBohrok Swarm CDBionicle Gold CD (From TRU Manas Promo)Mata-Nui Mini-CD (From Toa Mata)Nestle Promo CD (Thanks to ~(Glatorian Gelu)~ of BZPower)Mask of Light CD (Thanks to Toatapio Nuva of BZPower).
