  1. A Treatise on Protodermis 1st Edition by BeingForm Forward Protodermis has recently been useful in the invention of the four dimensional framework analyzer (patent pending), weight changing projectiles, kanohi clothing, the hygenic mask brush, and other things that we can’t do without. Furthermore knowledge of protodermis hardness, ductility, and elasticity has led to promising new materials and alloys. Quasi-alloys have been created through the fusion of copper and organic protodermis through heat treatment with partially energized protodermis (see Quintic Multipole Cu-organoprotodermis Constructs Discovered in the Lab published in 52 ASM (After Spherus Magna) for more information). This exiting field is growing fast but so far it has been developed without a systematic framework. In this treatise I will detail a theoretical model for the properties and behavior of protodermis after explaining its historical context. Chapter 1 Historical Overview section 1.1 Since the reformation of Spherus Magna in the year 0 ASM (After Spherus Magna) there has been an increased interest in the properties of Protodermis. This is primarily due to the knowledge gleamed by in an interview with Mata Nui after he was sealed back into the Mask of Life. The interview was conducted by Toa Tahu with the assistance of Dr Magnatroid (For more information read the paper "Mata Nui! How to Talk to Someone While They Are Still Alive!" published in the journal "The Fractal Positronic Brain" in the year 0 ASM). In this interview Mata Nui said " The Great Beings mined energized protodermis and found its properties remarkable. We tried to copy it and were able to make many types of synthetic protodermis, including the biological protodermis that allows you to live". That prompted Toa Tahu to ask how the great beings survived if they did not have protodermis already. Mata Nui replied by stating that there are "components" of energized protodermis that were formed in the atmosphere, but that he did not know much more than that because he did not pay attention in science class. Scientists then began to study the organic protodermis as well as sources of energized protodermis in order to study the origin of life. We attribute the discovery that energied protodermis is a reverse gestalt (It is less than the sum of its parts) from Iruini and Pouks in 2 ASM. In this experiment Pouks broke apart a carefully weighed piece of protodermis in a vacuum chamber (created by Iruini). They found that the protodermis weighed more when it was broken into more parts. The change in weight was too significant to be due to contamination from the outside environment, which puzzled both of them. Later Turaga Kualus (24 ASM) hypothesized that the reverse gestalt arose from exchange of particles with the environment called virtual protodendrons. The exchange of protodendrons was directly proportional to the surface area and thus increased the mass. This fact was taken advantage of to make weight changing projectiles in the year 53 ASM. This Preview was brought to you by BeingForm Publishing company ™. More of the Treatise is available upon request. Edit: I realized after I posted this that I should have posted this under the "Epic" section instead of the short story section but I already submitted this as an entry to Legend Continues Contest and was afraid to move this post because that might disqualify me. Could I wait until after the contest is over to move this to the "Epic" section?
  2. Alright everybody, stick on your conspiracy caps, because today we'll be over-analyzing a children's book! (More so than usual, I mean.) Now, in the novelization of Mask of Light, the Energized Protodermis pool in Makuta's lair is actually described as "mercury". Some may write that off as a creative liberty, but is it really just incorrect phrasing from a source of questionable canonicity? Almost certainly, but for the sake of argument, let's say it's not. We all know what Mercury is, right? Silver metal stuff that's liquid at room temperature, right? And what does energized protodermis look like? Of course, your next line is probably "So what? The author probably just used the word mercury since the two look so similar." Sure, but what if I told you that mercury and energized protodermis don't just look like the same thing...they ARE the same thing! Hold on there a second Mr. Judgy McNotCrazyPants! I think we all know actual mercury isn't the same thing as energized protodermis; for one thing, mercury doesn't have the ability to break things down like energized protodermis does, and it certainly isn't involved in mutation of any kind. Except for when it IS. Let me introduce you to a good friend I like to call "alchemy", which is formally defined as "the medieval forerunner of chemistry, based on the supposed transformation of matter" and informally defined as "old people pulling stuff out of their butts so they could make dat sweet sweet bling". Mercury is incredibly important in alchemy, and while I won't go into all the specifics for the sake of brevity, let me go over the ones important to this theory. Regular old mercury in alchemy does a lot, and is considered a very fundamental part of the field, but it doesn't have a lot to do with breaking things down and/or transforming them. However, there is a unique type of mercury in alchemy called "Philosophical Mercury", which, as you can probably guess from the name, is an important part of creating the infamous Philosopher's Stone. We won't be talking about the stone itself here, but rather, what exactly Philosophical Mercury has to do with it. In alchemy, Philosophical Mercury is essential to the process of transmutation, breaking objects down so they can be reconstituted into better materials. Energized protodermis either breaks down or mutates whatever falls into it. They two substances seem similar in function, sure, but not exactly the same if you're looking at them on the surface level. On the other hand, we're over-analyzing stuff right now, so let's go deeper. You can't "mutate" metal. Inhabitants of the MU are mostly made of metal. In spite of this, those that get mutated by energized protodermis end up with the inorganic parts "mutated" along with their organic ones. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense, right? Well, what if their inorganic bodies weren't being mutated, but rather, transmuted by the alchemical effects of the Philosphical Mercury? This would explain why energized protodermis affected their inorganic bodies alongside their organic parts. As for energized protodermis's dissolving effect on those not destined to transform, you could argue that the transmutation process is stopped halfway through a la Scar from Fullmetal Alchemist; without being reconstituted, the material comprising their bodies is simply broken down, seeming to "dissolve" away. Or it could just be that I'm digging way too deep into an off-hand descriptor from a children's book. Yeah, that's probably it.
  3. Alright, so I have two theories regarding what Protodermis is. Protodermis isn't made of atoms, or its sub-atomic particles protons and neutrons, but rather a different sub-atomic particle formed from a different combination of smaller scale sub-atomic particles. This allows it to take on the various different forms it takes in canon, due to the different behavioural characteristics "programmed" into it by the composition of the smaller scale sub-atomic particles that make up its components. Protodermis is made of atoms, or only its sub-atomic particles protons and neutrons, but with a transformational sub-atomic particle added into the mix which can splice and combine the protons and neutrons in the atoms or just the atoms themselves based on different chemical variables or heat, forming different kinds of matter based on what variable triggers what transformation.Thoughts?
  4. http://mate397.deviantart.com/art/Protodermis-Entity-2015-Redux-534025746 Yet again an older creation returns in a new form, this time it's, I'd assume, a fairly known character from the Bionicle lore the Protodermis Entity. I used to have two versions of this fella but after a while a I realized I don't need both just one, so I merged the two into a single MOC Detail shots: http://mate397.deviantart.com/art/Protodermis-Entity-Arm-534025967 http://mate397.deviantart.com/art/Protodermis-Entity-Legs-534026054 http://mate397.deviantart.com/art/Protodermis-Entity-Torso-534026096 http://mate397.deviantart.com/art/Protodermis-Entity-Back-534026139 http://mate397.deviantart.com/art/Protodermis-Entity-Size-534026181 http://mate397.deviantart.com/art/Protodermis-Entity-Bling-534026256 http://mate397.deviantart.com/art/Canon-FanFic-170262293 Edit: Okay seriously, what is going on with this site? My Protector of Time MOC gets near instant replies but this one is still on 0-0? If you bother to check, comment if you'd please. Up for a week and not a single comment... really guys?
  5. A near-canon poster-style chart of Protodermis in its various stages, Will feel at home on the wall of any mask forge, Ga-Metru school, or Great Being workshop! (a quickish, but better rendition of this chart i made to help me remember how proto works, maybe some matoran are just as forgetful as i am. :u) also, good texture and material practice, so there's that, enjoy!
  6. What is the bar with the protodermis under your profile?
  7. What do you think? Masks, which were a huge part of G1, are back. Will Protodermis have a place in the new story too? As a power source, or a catalyst for transformation, or a possible third magical use? Or is there another thing that will/currently does fill the role Protodermis played in G1? Considering they've brought back so many other things that are explicitly BIONICLE, like the terms Toa (and the Mata names), Mask of Power, and the Makuta, not to mention the Island location, it would make sense for Protodermis to become an integral part to the new story, much like how Chi is to Chima. What do you think?
  8. Man I've been a busy little Gafna here lately havn't I? Anyway I've always been kinda bugged by Energized Protodermis. It cannonicly is the fist type of Protodermis ever seen (I'm not meaning inuuniverse. I mean from perspective.) and it was helpful in creating the Toa Nuva. Latter on we find out it has been the very reason for the Matoran Universe to even exist. But not only that it is also a psychotic malevolent entity that fine all things as meer insects to it. What in Mata Nui's name was at the core of Sphereus Magna?! We get a lump of Iron (which quite frankly is a blessing) and the Agori, Glatorian, and the Great Beings get mutagenic mercury with delusions of grandeur. It would seem that some one created something worse than mistake a GB may ever made and dumped it on SM while it was formin (The first time ) oddly as a fan of the Metroid series too I've noticed it's much like Phazon. Thoug not radioactive and it seems to be a metal too. Just what is this goop? Any thoughts? Also I apologize for any spelling mistakes and the like. Late night posting isn't always a smart thing
  9. Alright, so I don't know if this has been done already, and if it has, then my apologies. Anyway, I'm making this topic for the discussion of Protodermis; how it was made from EP, its properties, and such. Energized Protodermis too. Alright, so first of all, how in the world can protodermis exist both as a clear, water-like liquid, and as a hot, molten metal-like liquid? I actually went on a bit of a writing spree yesterday, and came up with a theory. Mind you, this is a bit scientific, so... anyway. I think that protodermis might actually not be regular matter, but rather something that might be called "psuedo-matter", quantum machines of relatively the same size as normal atoms, but with many intricate, controllable properties. So... discussion?
  10. So I was thinking...what exactly is protodermis? I don't know that the bionicle universe is even constructed in the same way as ours (atoms, molecules etc) but if it is, then is protodermis an element, a compound or a name for a group of elements? Everything in the MU is made of it, even the 'elements' themselves so it must be able to come in many different forms like carbon. Anyway, tell me what you think... -Silo
  11. So, we know that the Bionicle universe shares [at least] some properties, particularly those of physics, with our universe. (Gravity, water (and therefore chemicals, though those aren't really talked about), etc.) And, particularly because of the chemicals part, things can take three forms (not counting plasma, yo), liquid, solid, and gas. We know protodermis can be solid and liquid, but we've never seen it as a gas, that I can think of. Also, we know that things have to be either an element, or a molecule (well, not REALLY, since there are levels below those, but you know what I'm saying). What would protodermis be? I'm tending more towards element, just because of its properties. Also, energized protodermis could be like Prt1- or something like that, which would make it more reactive, probably. So, what are your thoughts on this? Obviously, this is all hypothetical.
  12. I never new Lego prototypes existed until recently. And if I could have guessed, I would have thought they weren't available for the general public. So because of that, I would love to acquire one. I don't care if its Bionicle, Minifigure, or regular Lego stuff. I have some cash, and some Legos. And I just want this to become the center of my collection. If you have something you may be willing to part with, let me know, and we may be able to work out something. I think I should also mention I am also interested in the Silver Toa Nuva Masks AKA Protodermis.
  13. Hello again. It’s been quite a while since I’ve been active around S&T or posted a decent theory, though after posting this on my blog the other day, I’ve decided to post it here and get some feedback, criticism and hopefully some discussion from you all. PART ONE - INITIAL THEORY POST The following theory is somewhat of a further development of my theory outlined in my previous blog post about the functions of different types of Matoran in the Matoran Universe, in which I outlined what I believed to be the function of the Bo-Matoran as a method of maintenance of the various flora made from organic Protodermis throughout the Mata-Nui robot. The primary point of this theory is a look into the question: Why only flora? We've been told by Greg and several references in the universe that the entirety of the matoran universe is comprised of various forms of Protodermis. "Protodermis is the material which makes up the Matoran Universe and all living things and objects inside it." [bS01] Now Matoran, like all other sapient species in the matoran universe are made up of a combination of mechanical and organic components. The mechanical components are comprised of pure solid protodermis whilst the organic components are comprised of what is reffered to as organic protodermis. "Organic Protodermis is a type of Protodermis that makes up all the organic tissue in the Matoran Universe." [bS01] Organic tissue is not only found in the sapient species, but also is what makes up all of the Flora in the Matoran Universe. "The plants of the Matoran universe are made entirely of Protodermis, distinguishing themselves from plants of other worlds." [bS01] Toa of the Green are able to manipulate this Flora, tapping into the Protodermis which comprises the plant-life, manipulating and also creating it. Some of the Flora in the MU (such as Karzahni and Morbuzakh) even had varying degree's of sentience, making the only real difference between flora and fauna the presence of solid protodermis and shape of being. This creates an interesting question, if a plant entirely made up of organic protodermis can be sentient, then that form of organic protodermis must be capable of forming at least some variety of brain equivalent capable of higher thought and function, similar at least in composition to the organic parts of the brain that lies within a Toa. With the above knowledge I see it as a reasonable thought process that if the Toa of the Green are able to control the organic protodermis that comprises the various forms of flora throughout the matoran universe including those that are sentient; they should be also control and manipulate the organic protodermis that lies within matoran or any of the other humanoid inhabitants of the MU. As far as I know I don't believe we've had direct confirmation from Greg that a Toa of the Green can't do this. I believe that there are a few reasons which could plausibly explain why we have not seen such usage of the Green in the story-line thus-far whilst allowing for it's inclusion. Unethical behavior / Breaking the Toa Code. Toa are upright paragons of right and justice, manipulation someone's internal organs can quite easily be seen a fighting dirty or as unethical. This is the same reason why there were no elemental Toa of Acid, despite there being Bohrok of this element. Despite this being seen as unethical to use on enemies, I still believe this can work as a part of the range of powers that the Toa could utilize. No significant Toa of Green in the Lore. In the entirety of the BIONICLE storyline, we only ever encountered one Toa of the Green: A Toa from Lhikan's past team who died to an attack by the Frostelus. Also due to the Frostelus nature of being sentient Rahi, point 1 would aid in why we never saw him use this power.Experience required / Hard to control Power. The internal organics of a living humanoid integrated with machinery and programming would be incredibly complicated, it would take a lot of practice and finesse to do so and it may be something everyday Toa of the Green may not be able to accomplish.Too complicated to explain to children. This is fairly self-explanatory, in the same way that psionics did not have large story presence, the green is easier to explain as being simply plant life to children, they can easily understand a plant Toa, but explaining that the plant guy can also manipulated organic components of the Matoran? Not so much. Luckily the ending of the official story line removes this restriction.Possibly confusion with Life Powers. Toa of the Green were introduced during the 2006-2008 story line surrounding the Mask of Life, while the Mask of life doesn't explicitly manipulate organics in any way. It's manipulation of the "Life force" inside every living thing in the Matoran Universe could potentially cause some confusion with an element which could manipulated Flora and to a limited extent Fauna. However, Life is a very different "element" In that all of it's powers are in relation to "Life-Force" while the organic protodermis is simply another form of protodermis. A Toa of Iron, Psionics and the Green could create a being with organic, biomechanical and programmed components but the being would not have the "Life-Force" component analogous to a soul if you will. It would simply be a robot or a golem-like creation. With these five reasons in mind, I don't believe that they necessarily mean that non-flora organic manipulation is off the table for Toa of the Green, I've got a few reasons why I believe this would be rather a neat addition to the canon. Interesting and more in depth power usage. Self explanatory really, it could have a lot of interesting applications and could be used both in and out of combat and give Teams a reason for taking a Toa of the Green to environments which do not have plants.Introducing a 'Healer' element. Aside from Gali Nuva in the 2003 Mask of Light movie, we have never really had the healer trope in a group of Toa, with the ability to create and manipulate the organic protodermis inside their allies. Toa of the Green could become healers for the group, repairing their damaged organics in the same way a Toa of Iron would mend armor. Gali's healing scene can be explained that the exposure to water was helping the organics that had been damaged in Tahu heal slowly with exposure to water. A Toa of the Green would have been able to heal him at a much greater rate. The Toa of Green's knowledge of poisons and toxins from various plants could aid in this role greatly.Making the most of an ambiguous name. Has Greg decided to name the element "Plant-life" or "Jungle" we wouldn't have this opportunity. The fact that's it's called "the Green" allows us to associate it not with just plants but all organic protodermis. This can easily be explained by having the raw form of organic protodermis take on a green color when channeled for creation of plants or healing.Possible explanation for lack of Toa of Green. The Makuta actively wiped out Toa of the most powerful elements that they saw as a threat to themselves. Magnetism, Iron, and Plasma were all hunted down. If the Makuta wished to hide their new lack of organic components from Toa in their continued masquerade, Toa of the Green would pose a problem.Completion of a Self-Maintaining MU. It's been stated before that the Matoran working is what keeps the Matoran universe working. In my previous blog post from 2010, I outlined the various matoran and the purposes that they fulfill in the robot. However there was one missing maintenance job as there was nothing responsible for organic protodermis in sapient beings. If the Toa of the Green gain the ability to manipulate and repair the organics within humanoid lifeforms in the Matoran Universe, all aspects of lifeforms inside the MU are now self-relying and maintaining. Toa of Iron can maintain and repair armor and solid protodermis in the mechanical components of beings. Toa of Psionics can maintain and fix mental errors and programming malfunctions in the minds of beings. Toa of The Green can maintain, and heal injuries and organic protodermis in the bodies of beings.I've gathered a few further thoughts and references on why the organic components of Matoran and Toa would need some form of maintenance. We were told in 2001 that the original Toa Mata had all of their organic components decayed due to their prolonged inactivity, hibernation and possibly the environmental factors associated with being floating in a tube for 1000 years. The Toa also lost their memories as an effect of this, leading me to conclude that the majority of their memories must have been stored in their organic protodermis components or the majority of their 'brain'. The mechanical components, made of solid protodermis must have included at least some form of rudimentary secondary brain for survival reactions such as putting themselves back together and basic motion. This would be a core part of Matoran/Toa base programming installed into their machinery. I'd imagine this would be in a similar capacity to how the human body can react to pain before passing on a pain signal to the brain itself, allowing the body to operate on its own in a limited capacity. Similarly the matoran/Toa can operate on it's own until the organics are repaired as seen by the Toa Mata and Metru-Matoran hibernating in the spheres. I'd imagine that the Matoran in Karzahni in disrepair were also in a similar state; but kept this way as it was stated that Karzahni "stripped them of their identities". This would have been achieved by removing the organics and thus memories perhaps followed a little bit of reprogramming. The Toa Mata not only lost all of their memories but also their training and skills, this shows that the organic components are vital for continuing functionality of Toa. The organic components healed on their own slowly, but it was years before any of them regained their memories. The Metru-nui refugee's also lost their memories and required the pure Toa energy of six Toa simply to awaken them. Potentially, we could still have six Toa Metru running around if there had been a Toa of the Green amongst them. PART TWO - BLOG FEEDBACK AND DISCUSSION For the sake of deepening discussion, I’m going to post below the comments I received on the blog and my responses as I believe they add to the theory somewhat. Lin, I can definitely see where you’re coming from here. Plant an animal cells in our world are drastically different from each other on a cellular level. But as you stated, this is the world of BIONICLE, where ‘cold energy’ exists as a concept and an entire robot is made up of varying forms of the same compound: Protodermis. This is why I try not to base any parts of my theories upon the limitations imposed by the way the real world works, instead extrapolating ideas from existing physics and chemistry of the BIONICLE universe. By thinking this way, I believe that it can help make ideas and theories that ‘fit’ more into the chaotic mess that is the Science of the BIONICLE universe. I can agree that Plants and animals may have some form of different structure in terms of classification. I believe that structure must be at least somewhat identifiable on a non-cellular level and that is what allows the matoran to classify what is a plant, rahi, robot or a sapient species. The classifications must be fairly obvious otherwise we’d have matoran calling Morbuzahk a Rahi. I proposed in the theory above that the primary difference between the Flora of the universe and the Fauna (including Sapient Species) was the presence of solid Protodermis in the bodies of Fauna. A difference which is easily identifiable by Matoran. I do believe that Greg’s system may have initially been wonky, but has come together to be somewhat cohesive due to the various developments and evolution of the story over the 10 years and being bombarded by those of us who are varying levels of scientists. There are many different forms of the same compound throughout the universe (Protodermis), in the Matoran universe. It can come in the different states of matter and in a number of forms of each. Frozen, solid Protodermis aka Ice is as similar to liquid Protodermis as Pure Solid Protodermis aka Metal, as both can be created from it, albeit Pure Solid is a slightly longer process. As far as Stone and Earth, they may both be forms of Raw Solid Protodermis that are slightly different in terms of the particle size of the Protodermis, which just gives us one more form of Solid Protodermis, Fine Solid Protodermis. As far as Organic tissue goes, we are only aware of one form of Organic Protodermis. My theory hinges on the fact that both flora and fauna have the same form of Organic Protodermis inside of them. If a Toa of the Green cannot manipulate the Organic Protodermis inside Flora and Sapient beings, then this organic Protodermis must be a different form. I.e. Floral Organic Protodermis and Faunal Organic Protodermis become two new different forms. Potentially even another separate form for humanoid sapients. This reminds me of the debate surrounding what makes Keetongu and Krahka a Rahi and not grouped with the rest of the races? This could be easily resolved if they resumed using rahi as the matoran word for “Not-us” as opposed to being synonymous with animal and have Makuta, Skakdi, Vortixx etc all be classified as Rahi. As it has essentially became the equivalent of the Roman word Barbarian which also used to mean “Not Roman” but is now associated with a certain kind of individual. Anyway, getting side-tracked here. I quickly just whipped up the above table to clearly lay out what I believe is the difference between the different forms of life in the matoran universe. I left out Sapience as a column as there are examples of sapient flora, rahi and robots. But are the majority of each of these categories aren't sapient. Not 100% sure I’m on board with this idea. I prefer the idea of a unified matoran race in terms of origin. Perhaps this could be a result of side effect of Toa of the Green healing their matoran over the years, slowly changing out the organic composition of their internals? Leaving this difference being more of an adapted change rather than a created change. Part of my point is that Jungle doesn’t have to be all the green is. Fire existed on Spherus Magna, but didn’t have heat control? Sand existed on Spherus Magna but didn’t end up being associated with an element in the MU. The great beings admitted they changed things in creating the giant robot, with the decision to remove jungle as a primary element being one we have as canonized. The fact it’s called the Green and not Jungle lends to the fact that something significant was changed; as did the fact they didn’t call it Plant-life. Especially when we have an example of a power called exactly “Plant Control” which is that of the Makuta and Rahkshi. The Green isn't Jungle or Plant Control. It’s the Green. They’re has got to be some reason behind it (other than the truth of Greg’s random decision) that we can explain and create. PART THREE - ADDITIONAL THINGS TO THINK ABOUT After discussing my theory with the commenters in my blog, I continued to think about the question I posed to the responders. If The Toa of the Green can’t control organic protodermis in humanoids and Rahi, this poses some more questions. Additional Forms of Organic Protodermis. How many specific forms of Organic Protodermis are there? Is it just limited to Botanic Organic, Sapient Organic and Rahi Organic? Or can it be manipulated in the same way solid Protodermis can, resulting in Frozen Organic, Pure Organic with the original being Raw Organic? Are there forms of Gaseous and Liquid Organic Protodermis? Is the original solid Antidermis, which was used as the internal organs of the Makuta race; organic in nature? The Green Etymology. Can we create an actual lore-based reason for the choice of the Great beings change the name from Jungle to the Green? My organic theory is one possibility but there can easily be others, for example: All acid we have encountered in the storyline thus-far has been green or greenish-yellow in color, with one major source being botanically produced (The grass on the mountain produced an acidic substance.) Another major occurrence of Acid was the Lehvak. Instead of making Acid a basic sub-power, could Liquid Organic Protodermis be acidic in nature and the substance that Lehvak and potentially Toa of the Green can control thus fitting in with the sub-power scheme of Vaccum/Air? This would fit with the timeline as the original Bohrok must have been created around the same time as the Av-Matoran who were made, which was when the great beings were still considering the green as a primary element. By the time the Bohrok-Kal had been created, it was decided that Air would be instead, thus Vaccum(Sub-power of air) to counter Air and Acid(Sub-power of The Green?) to counter The Green. I’m aware that this had no chance of being canon as Greg did not want a Toa wielding Acid, even if it’s only to nullify acid. But a guy can theorize, right? These questions aren't so much related to my original theory; rather just a few more things to consider when thinking about the Green and Organic Protodermis as a whole. This theory is very much still a work in progress and as I said at the start, I'd really appreciate any feedback and criticism that you may have to offer. Thanks for reading. - Roki
  14. So I was kind of bored today, and suddenly, this crazy idea about the science of the Protodermis Molecule popped into my head. Then I realized it actually made a lot of sense! So I spent a few hours “pondering the Great Thoughts” and little by little formed the basis for my now extensive theory. This theory is trying to explain the possible science and various characteristics of the extraordinarily advanced Protodermis Molecule and many things about the Matoran Universe. Please remember that what you are about to read is entirely based on theories and evidence, not canon facts. Also, I will probably be adding to this theory as I think of more things. The Protodermis Molecule: Components: -Dynamic Protodermis Molecule Programming -Programmed Non Dynamic Characteristics and Instruction Sets -Connections | Mental Link -Scripts -Systems -Sub-Systems -Programs -Sub-Program Systems -Program Scripts -System Scripts -Energy | Charged Protodermis Molecules A molecule containing an advanced computer, likely of the quantum type. The Protodermis Molecule groups together with a massive amount of other Protodermis molecules to form complex systems comparable to computer programs. Each Program represents a different material or element in the Matoran Universe. The Protodermis molecule’s programming is dynamic. The dynamic programming is able to be altered by outside variables, which allows for true randomness and natural occurrences in the MU, as well as deviation from the rules and instructions of the Great Beings. This is what allows for free will and thought of all MU beings. Destiny can be evaded as well because of the ability of Protodermis molecules to deviate from the GB’s programming. Materials such as Protosteel have relatively simple programming in comparison to systems such as the Power System. The programming is basically a set of characteristics and instructions that define different materials. The high level programming of the material is fed into the dynamic system created by the union of the Protodermis molecules by a Script to form the different materials such as Protosteel. The programming of the materials reacts to changes and variables such as heat and stress in real time, and is sent to the dynamic system by a Script in order to make the corresponding changes to the material. (i.e. extreme heat will cause metal to melt.) Certain Programs can work in conjunction with each other to form systems. The brain of MU inhabitants is an example of one of these Systems. The Protodermis molecules of different Programs merge to create the System, which in the case of the MU brain is likely a chemical computer, though this cannot be confirmed nor denied since it is unknown if the brain of a MU being is organic, bio-mechanical, or completely mechanical. It is widely assumed that MU brains are mostly if not entirely organic, however. This also further explains the bodies of MU beings. The Brain System is able to form a mental link with the body through the Central Nervous System, and so it is able to recognize and detect nearly every Protodermis molecule in the body, forming the basis for sensory perception and bodily awareness. This also makes teleportation of the entire body possible as long as the body is not disintegrated or shattered. The Red Star uses this trait to teleport beings to and from it. Beings in the MU that possess power of any kind are able to control their powers through their Power Energy Reserve and their brain’s mental link. The brain sends both a signal and energy to the either external Protodermis molecules or Protodermis molecules in the Power Channel Exits. (Usually located in hands.) Protodermis molecules must be charged by the Energy Reserve of the user to, which is transported by the Mental Link. Powers cannot be used without the ability to charge the Protodermis molecules with the user’s energy reserve. There are various different types of power, but we will be focusing on Toa Power here. The specific powers are hard coded in to the Brain System of the Toa, and can be of the Control, Multiply, or Reaction categories, forming the basis for all Elemental powers in the MU universe. The mental link from the brain system is able to interact with a specified Program / Element, and either control or multiply that element as per the users thoughts, or produce reactions that create the basis for both real and pseudo Elements. Light is an example of a combination of a Reactionary, Multiplied, and Controlled, and therefore pseudo Element. Pseudo elements do not exist as Programs in the MU. Elemental Light is in fact very different from the general definition of light. The Protodermis molecule is capable of producing reactions that create elemental light that can then be multiplied and controlled to manifest into different Light based abilities such as lasers and light objects. Light’s sister element, Shadow, is also a pseudo element and functions in much the same way as Light. The Light based abilities of the Mask of Light (one of the few Elemental Kanohi) such as resolving conflicts are sub powers of Elemental Light and are control based abilities; they function by altering the Brain System of other beings in a minor and temporary way. When Elemental Power is exhausted, a Toa will have to wait to draw more energy in from the surroundings to fill the energy reserves. This is done on a subconscious and automatic level by a Script. A Script is a Program within another Program or System that runs in the background, providing fundamental subconscious and automatic functions. The users thoughts are translated into code in real time by the system and fed to the CNS and Mental Link stream by a Script.. When the user first uses his/her powers, no code has been generated yet, and it takes a while for the code to get into a normal, consistent, and quick flow, therefore creating a learning curve. After a while, the user is easily able to control the amount of power used and is able to apply it very quickly. Advanced users of powers will also be able to subconsciously generate additional sets of code to use sub-elemental abilities. This learning curve applies to mask powers as well, but in a different way.
  15. I've posted this once before but not on BZP. We know that Zaktan didn't get killed when The Shadowed One blasted him with his eyebeams. In a recent Ask Greg, he said that was probably because he was mutated. We also that Zaktan was a slave at a protodermis mine before he was a Dark Hunter, and protodermis can transform a person. My theory is this: What if, on the day that TSO came to that mine, there was a freak accident at the mine, and Zaktan got hit with protodermis? The protodermis would have changed his molecular level rather than his armor (I don't know if protodermis could do this, but I see no reason why it couldn't). This would explain why TSO chose Zaktan to join the Dark Hunters, because TSO knows that protodermis would make him stronger and a valuable hunter. How does the fanbase feel about this theory? Do you agree with it?
  16. So I was looking at the New Toa Classes topic and it sparked a question in my mind. Why and how is one destined or not destined to be transformed by energized protodermis? Are some of the people of the MU programmed or built to react to that without dying? If so that would explain why maybe the GBs built the Toa Mata like that in the case of them coming in contact with EP.
  17. 1. So, if the Energized Protodermis is sentient, why couldn't it have just pushed itself back into the core of Spherus Magna when it leaked out? Or, did the EP push itself out? And did the SM EP even have sentience, or was it just the EP in the MU? 2. Maybe the reason SM shattered was because Ep always either transforms or destroys whatever it touches. The core of the planet where it originally was must have been immune to this effect, otherwise it would have been destroyed long before the Core War. And maybe the EP, if it was sentient, pushed it's way to the surface of SM with the intent of destroying the planet, which would lead us to wonder why the EP would want to destroy the planet. 3. Is there any EP in the core of the new Spherus Magna? And was there any in the core of Bara Magna?
  18. Or is there simply a lot of power in it? Do you think the power in things like the Mask of Life will eventually run out?
  19. What would happen if the Ignika touched Energised Protodermis? Would the protodermis mutate the mask, will the mask curse the protodermis, or something more mysterious?
  20. Recently, I was looking at another topic on this here forum ( ), which dealt with deceased Matoran. A lot of that debate deals in Matoran scavenging parts off their dead, which would apply if the Matoran Universe is a closed circle of matter and energy. If that were the case, I would imagine that said parts would have to be reused or recycled in some manner. But there is actually evidence to the contrary. I propose that the Matoran Universe is NOT a closed circle of matter and energy. There is actually energy inputs into this system. These inputs come in the form of protodermis, found on the planets that Mata Nui was visiting. These planetary deposits would, theoretically speaking, been placed there by the Great Beings prior to Mata Nui's departure of Spherus Magna. Why would the robot need inputs? The second law of thermodynamics seems to apply in Bionicle, seeing as the Matoran have to accept energy inputs. And the robot has to have heating systems, seeing as it is traveling through space with living beings inside it. While the robot does have an extermely thick hull to prevent such energy loss, we are talking about the difference between the temperature suitable for life and that of space, which is freezing cold (understatement). Multiplied by the robot's rather large surface area, this would translate to a small, if signifigant, amount of energy being lost over time. Greg has confirmed the existance of heating and ventilation systems, which would require energy to use, energy that might not be easily reabsorbed. (Not to mention the system of artificial gravity)I could also argue that the MU robot would likely need some sort of system to move when the robot is in space (to change direction). This would likely involve projecting energy into space. The Red Star might help with this process, but even it has to get its energy from somewhere ( who knows where). I think there was a reference to Makuta, while in command of the MU, using "rockets" to get from Aqua Magna to Bara Magna, but that could simply be a reference to him using the Red Star, so I'm not going to go overboard with that. The entropy by its own is likely good enough reason. Also, it would not be too far out of line for the Great Beings to try to influence where their creation should go; they might have given him a certain amount of free reign, but they wouldn't have wanted the MU to run amok like their other creations ( which would be a major league disaster that could destroy multiple planets; Makuta=Exhibit A). It would also conveniently explain why the GBs did not interfere major league (alternate GBs in the other universe are an exception here) in the big battle between the two giant robots, because even if Makuta won, he would be unable to do universe wrecking damage because his energy would run down. But, logically speaking, this energy loss would be rather small, especially when Mata Nui was on a planet (optimum temprature and air already there, especially on Aqua Magna), which meant that Makuta had enough energy to power up the robot when he did. (Passage between Mata Nui and Metru Nui= energy saving ventilation shafts?) Logically, energy reactors in the MU (fuel) would be protodermis, since everything in the MU (last I checked) is made of protodermis. And the sophisticated sensors of the MU would likely pick up such deposits. ***Enter Zaktan, and that quote from Legacy of Evil. What confuses me is to why proto mining would be hazerdous; or even a death sentence in the MU. If proto is composing everything in the MU, then why is mining hazerdous? Inside the MU, I would imagine it as a strip mining operation to harvest the proto that's right beneath your feet. There were caves in Po-Metru; but those were made by Matoran. This "real proto mining" was deemed too hazerdous for Matoran, so much that they hired ill-tempered people like Zaktan to do it. The term "mining" refers to the extraction of one mineral from another; the only other time we see the term used is in Mata Nui, which is not in the MU. I propose that a certain number of individuals, like Zaktan and other Skakdi, who were considered expendable, were sent outside the MU when the robot landed on a planet with a protodermis deposit on it, which would occur, albeit infrequently. This would be "mined" from the surrounding areas. Said deposits would be placed underground in the first place to avoid the detection of the native inhabitants, but they might still have an interest in the mining operation. Said mining would likely occur in tunnel-mining fashion in order to quickly get what the robot needed with a minimum of attention (strip mines are pretty obvious!) The beings who did this mining would likely have to shield themselves from the natives, not to mention the possible tunnel collapse...hence the powerful beings and the danger involved. Even more important, and dangerous, would be the knowledge involved; possible exposure to aliens and learning that they are invaders; carrying of proto to fuel chambers, and just plain flat knowing that they move in and out of a universe that moves would be knowledge that nobody wants in the wrong hands. The easiest way to prevent that knowledge from being spread? Kill them all. Somehow, Zaktan slipped through the crack. Or maybe he was reserved enough, possibly horrified enough that he wouldn't talk; they just shoved a death threat in his face and shoved him on his way. (That, and I think TSO rescued him for some reason - there's evidence that some of the other Piraka, likely Reidak and Avak, were involved or at least familiar) Maybe Zaktan didn't fully get it until he read Makuta's plan on the walls of the fortress. There was obviously joy in that moment; I think the mystery behind the horrors he had seen haunted him for years, and its resolution changed him from the retisent and creepy to the proud; he knew something everyone else did not, and that quickly went to his head. So go and like Mata Nui examine my theory, and consider the holes bigger than Zaktan that art present there.
  21. I'm kinda sad to see S&T die down, and all those grand theory topics about the nature of the MU and such now vanished only into the memories of older members. So I figured I'd pick one of the great unanswered mysteries, see what evidence I could find concerning it, and see where that led me. (Kapura's as much of a mystery as ever, but I don't mind). What exactly protodermis is has been something no one is exactly sure of, because it's so irregular. Most people chalk it up to magic but I, being a science fiction fan, have decided to collate everything we know about protodermis, put into the context of normal science, and then see if anyone here who has a better knowledge of the interaction between real elements can help me figure out exactly what might match those known properties. To clarify, I'm referring to the GB-created stuff, not natural EP.Let's start with the basics. [*]Protodermis is a molecule, not an elemental atom. Evidence to this effect is the fact that the GBs invented protodermis instead of discovering it. (I vaguley remember something about a Greg quote, but until I see the exact wording of it I'm not going to bring that into this.)[*]Protodermis either bonds easily with other molecules or it can assimilate atoms into its molecular structure (as evidenced by its incredibly variant forms that it can take, along with references to "purifying" protodermis in Ga-Metru). I lean toward the first, as assimilation would make the molecule really no longer protodermis, and the process of breaking the molecule to reassemble pure protodermis would be incredibly difficult, even at the level of tech we saw in Metru Nui.[*]There is, in fact, one "true" (or "pure," so to speak) form of proto, because it's processed into pure proto in Ga-Metru.[*]It is very hard to oxidize. Mata Nui's Great Spirit body was seen to have made it through a thousand-year sleep without rusting, instead being covered in mud. Now, I think that we can extrapolate a few things about the pure and impure states of proto. [*]At least one form of impure protodermis has a very low melting point, as we have seen liquid protodermis in Ga-Metru, where (not coincidentally, I think) impure proto is gathered to be purified. It acts exactly like water, and Water Toa can influence it. I suspect that this means that the impure proto found in Ga-Metru is bonded with H2O molecules. I think this means that the frozen proto seen in Ko-Metru is impure as well.[*]Pure protodermis has a very high melting temperature, as evidenced by the lava-like protodermis that we can see in Ta-Metru. It has been stated that pure proto is what Ta-Metru processes to make disks and masks, and therefore it is likely that the stuff that is seen there is pure proto. BS01 suggests that this might actually be the plasma state of protodermis, but I have seen no evidence for that and it doesn't (to my knowledge) really act like plasma, so I disagree with that theory.[*]"Raw" protodermis, I suspect, is also impure protodermis, but bonded with something that has a melting point higher than that of liquid proto, such as dirt. This is because BS01 delineates between raw proto and pure proto, which implies that raw proto is impure. However, it doesn't imitate water like liquid proto does, and therefore is likely bonded to another molecule. Bonesiii said that he recalls something about raw being more impure than liquid proto. If this is, in fact, true, it seems likely that pure protodermis can bond together with solid materials more easily than with liquids, but not to the point of making it unlikely to see liquid proto. So, what's in a protodermis molecule? [*]Iron. We can say this for fairly certain because an Iron Toa can create and use solid protodermis, as well as natural wrought iron.[*]An unknown element with a high melting point. See my reasoning about molten protodermis for this.[*]An unknown factor which causes natural crystal lattices in protodermis. This is what results in lightstones and their close cousin, heatstones. This form of proto also seems to be very conducive to storing energy. It is possible that Iron is merely another element which is bonded to proto, but BS01 says that Iron Toa can maniulate pure proto. That being said, I'm willing to cede the point if I'm disproved. There are two other forms of protodermis that need to be addressed. One is protosteel, and the other is organic protodermis.Protosteel is likely a form of impure protodermis with a higher-than-normal amount of carbon and iron (and possibly other things like titanium), causing a much more resilient form of proto.Organic protodermis is fairly simple to explain: it's just organic cells built of of protodermis molecules instead of their real-world counterparts.Energized protodermis, being entirely divorced from normal protodermis, I have little idea about. Bonesiii suggests that the Great Beings failed to mimick an "energized" form of protodermis which gave them artificial proto instead of EP, and the modification of proto beings that EP seems capable of doing is simple the energy in EP being converted into extra mass to modify the subject.
