IC (Palace of the Sun)

Empress Wu had come to possess grave suspicions regarding her scholarly guest. Now though, she believed she had the last piece of the puzzle. She was current sitting across from him, in what had become their customary meeting place, the courtyard where he had first worked his way into her court. He was currently going on about the superior qualities of bronze when compared to the iron that the foolish Ozun had armed the Leaping Mantis troops with. Wu made a mental note to investigate the problem and fix it if what the scholar claimed was true, though, as always, she rather suspected it was. Liu Fu had been more or less dictating policy when it came to public works projects simply because Wu could not deny the simple logic of his words.

Now, though, she believed she had the means to change who exactly held the power in their relationship. Liu Fu relied on disguises and genius to work his manipulations and it was time to strip at least one of those methods from him. Sipping her tea, Wu made a show of nodding, luring the scholar into a false sense of security. Then she struck. “Very interesting Long Feng, very interesting indeed. I shall have my agents investigate your claims most thoroughly, rest assured. For the moment however, I feel there are other matters to discuss." A unit of eight Iron Troops filed into the courtyard, obeying the signal she had given and supplementing her usual guards.

A variety of emotions played across the sorcerers face, confusion, realization and finally, respect. Wu was not inclined to trust his facial expressions however; he had proven far too adept at fabrication in the past. He spoke then, more or less acknowledging her claim was true. “I suppose it was only a matter of time…” He trailed off, clearly wondering if his blood was about to spilled upon the plants of the courtyard.

Wu however, did not get where she was by wasting talent. “You had fooled me for a month or so, but as I observed your movements, I saw a flash now and then, something that would not come from a mere scholar, however intelligent. You play the game well, Long Feng, but a sorcerer’s power cannot be contained by disguises, no matter how clever they may be. The coiled strength, the raw power will always work its way to the surface.”

Wu took another sip of her tea, savoring her victory. “If you sought to rule the nation through me, I am sorry to say that such an endeavor is doomed to failure. I am not, however, going to waste your abilities. Consider your position amongst the court officials secure.” One word from here though and his life would be quite thoroughly extinguished and he likely knew that. He was completely dependent on her good will now more than ever. Sorcerers were a favorite target for assassination if they entered the sphere of politics.

Only her influence, her control of the military and the fear her wrath would inspire in her rivals would spare him from waking up with a few daggers in his back.

She loved it when a plan came together.

Mao shook his head at the naivety of the barbarian visitors. One didn’t just waltz up to the palace and demand an audience with the Empress, least of all with this sort of Empress. He could understand their request, if only vaguely. It wasn’t much of a shock, the Zhao dialect was a very difficult language to grasp if you didn’t grow up with it. “Tell you what, we’ll escort you to one of the government offices and see what happens. Empress doesn’t normally meet with traders…”

"NO, NO, THE VIRGINS AND SHEEP ARE QUITE SUFFICIENT IN THE CURRENT SUPPLY. I DO THINK THERE IS A REMARKABLE LACK OF WAR GOING ON RIGHT NOW." If there was anything that amused dragon-kind, it was watching humanity ebb and flow through the centuries, and occasionally using them as giant politics simulators, because dragons themselves were an antisocial bunch and had poor politicking. "AS FAR AS I KNOW THERE IS LITERALLY NO WAR GOING ON BETWEEN ANY NATION. SOME TRIBAL BICKERING YES BUT NO NATIONS. I FIND THIS DISPLEASING."

IC [@Xom | Scouting]

The southern island was discovered to be very similar to the main island; jungle filled, though slightly less so, with substantial inland bits actually capable of sustaining good farmland. An odd geological phenomena was hot springs, something the people of Shial had never seen before. There were no volcanoes to be found, however, so at any rate it provided nice sources of mostly pure water.

IC: The Palace

"W-well, Fire-Breath...we are still recovering from our domination of Jelvaqk and ensuring our continued dominance there. It may please you to know that you have been accepted among their pantheon, as a God of War, Fire and the Sky!" The King did hope that the topic shift would work; he was definitely not ready for another war.

IC: Exploration Party

The scouts, after inspecting the area, decided that the island was prime territory for a new town to be formed; doubtless there would be resources of note, and the sprawling fields would make for among the richest farmland known. Vilashol, the battlemage, began constructing a stone fort; four tall walls made of stone, with a slot where a gate would be added, the basis of any defense. Two parties of ten men were sent into the jungle to hunt, in opposite directions; this island was easily large enough to host deer or boar, or perhaps men.

That being said, thag thag thaggity thag thagness.

"OH, WELL, GOOD TO HEAR THAT." The dragon sorely hoped that there weren't any other dragons in the area. That would simply become awkward if they swooped in and found it being worshiped in a land that didn't give tribute. "HAVE YOU CONSIDERED THE NATION SOUTH OF HERE? AN ODD RACE, BUT I AM SURE YOUR ARMIES WILL DOMINATE THEM EASILY."

IC [@Xom | Scouting]

The work of a battlemage was noisy; pulling slabs of stone from the earth shook it and destabilized bits of ground. Even as the men set out to work constructing the fort, they would soon arrive to the uneasy conclusion that they were being watched. During the nights, they would hear odd sounds, things that didn't seem like they would fit the local wildlife. It became particularly concerning when one of the men tasked with guarding the supplies reported a disturbance, a humanoid shape fleeing into the darkness when he came around with a torch. Obviously, the was something here, and the scouting would have to continue.

IC (Township of Dao)

Soon enough, the stange visitors were ushered into a small estate some distance away from the small fishing hamlet, in the center of one of the larger towns in the area. They were marched into the village proper, though not before their erstwhile escorts stopped to discuss the best point of entrance, no doubt giving them time to note the wooden wall stretching around the township. When they entered, they were marched by sprawling stone and wood houses all done in an architectural style alien to their sensibilities. They were walked through the winding pathways of the town, past a busy marketplace, past the trio of tea houses that passed as entertainment in the town. After this, they were instructed to enter the estate that lay in the center of the town. Though small by the standards of the Zhao, the emphasis on building wide rather than merely adding in as many floors as can be managed might induce them to believe that this building was a minor palace. The fact it was large enough to merit one or two courtyards within its walls would certainly help that impression.

When they entered the estate, an escort would appear, consisting of a few Leaping Mantis guards whou would take them to the central room of the estate. There they found a representative of the Dominion waiting for them, sporting a fu manchu and a red zhiju with a zhu xi perched upon his head. The man was somewhat overweight, quite elderly and the last few stubborn wisps of his beard were barely enough to obscure his chin. “You would be the traders then?” The representative bowed his head slightly in greeting. “You stand in the presence of Qin Fiu, representative of the Zhao Court and voice of the Empress in this region. What say you?”

IC: The Captain, assuming it was a local custom, and bowed his head accordingly, as did the members of his crew who accompanied him.

"We thank you for your courtesy, honorable Qin Fiu. I represent the Imperial State of Badois. My name is Captain Jean Metreau, and I have been sent on behalf of Emperor Louyis XVI. The Emperor wishes to open trade between our nations, as well as diplomatic relations between his court and that of your Empress."

Well, would you just look at that?

IC (Qin Fu)

Qin Fu clapped his hands once, summoning in servants bearing trays of steaming steak and rice whiskey. "Eat well my friends, your words bring joy to my heart, it is so rare to find one willing to talk instead of fight.” For a moment the old man remembered his daughter, killed while they were still purging the barbarian tribes from this region. The pain stung then and it did now. The fact they had wiped out the entire race of barbarians down to the last man did dull the pain however. “I see no problem with your wishes, though I will need to send word to the Empress before making a final ruling.” He smiled for a moment. “Bureaucracy you understand. It might be simpler to simply meet with the Empress directly, but the practice fell out of use after one of the last Emperors was slain by a barbarian speaker…”

IC(Zhao): The Captain nodded.

"Most understandable my friend. It is a wise practice indeed. We thank you for your hospitality, which I hope will be the start of mutual friendship between our peoples."

The men sat to eat the strange food, which they found to be actually quite enjoyable. The Captain had previously coached his men to eat anything set before them, but the Zhao food made that an easy task.

IC(Falcon Lord):

After indicating their assent, the crew extended oars and began pulling the ship into the harbor. Two smaller rowboats were dispatched to shore to avoid beaching the main vessel, each of which contained three sailors.

The speaker smiled as the boats came close to shore, motioning to the nearby dock workers they rushed to welcome the Badoise sailors to shore.

The speaker then stepped forward to welcome them personally, he gave a slight bow and said,

"Welcome to Kaenath!"

IC (Palace of the Sun)

Long Feng believed he was an intelligent, cunning sort. He also believed in knowing one’s proverbial dancing partner. One could almost feel the coming trials and tribulations in the air, if one knew how to look. The Zhao would be tested during the reign of Empress Wu and test harshly. The barbarians were no longer the scattered savages the histories recounted, no matter how much one would like to think so. Logic dictated that they would have formed nations of their own and would have similar desires. An age of blood and glory was dawning and at times, Long Feng felt as though he was the only one who realized it. This was a shattered land, a wounded, bleeding land. That much was made clear by the inexplicably shattered boulders one came upon in the countryside. This was land with history to match the Zhao’s own, no matter how glorious their mythical homeland was. Long Feng knew this from the travelogues his students had collected, often from their own clan’s libraries.

The Zhao Dominion would have to be ready for this hostile world about them. For that they would need a leader like the Emperors of old. The Empress might delude herself into believing she controlled him, but he was a sorcerer of the chi, armies of rock and stone could march at his command, even the statues scattered around the palace could become loyal soldiers with but a spell. If Long Feng truly wished it, he would be Emperor right now. No, his concerns were not petty power plays or even power; all he cared about was the Dominion as a whole. He modeled himself after the Mother of Chi, the legendary first sorcerer who discovered the ebb and flow of Chi. this was what had brought him to this old, isolated part of the palace, frequented only by scholars and guards. This archive held something of vital importance to him. The golden statue commemorating the Mother and her great deeds, as holy an object as any temple or vaunted shrine.

When had first found it, he had stood there for hours, humbled and overawed. As the stresses his position demanded weighed upon him, he had begun to talk to it, for want of any other companion he could trust. So here he was, pacing in front of the blank eyes of a long-dead sorceress. “This Empress Wu is a ruthless sort, the kind of person the Zhao need to correct the march of history and claim their rightful place….but she is arrogant, imagining that but one ploy could render someone her helpless servant. She knows how to use the politics of the court to her advantage, but I fear that if it comes to war she will prove an insufficient leader.” He paused for a moment, imagining the cities of the Zhao on fire, their armies lying dead in the field. “Her recent creation of a band of enforcers only increases my fears….but she did act on my advice regarding the equipment of the lower orders of the military. I fear that if war asks too much of her, she will simply give up and seek peace with the foe, no matter how deadly they may be in the future.”

He sighed. “I am not a good man Mother. I have killed; I have ordered the deaths of families. All in the name of one thing, power for the Zhao and security for our Dominion. Wu was simply the most promising candidate for the position and my students, though clever and deadly in many cases, are simply not enough of a power base to ensure long term stability.” Many of the Iron Troops in the palace, in addition to answering to the Military Lords also counted Long Feng as their mentor and as a consequence, someone to be obeyed. A whispered word here and a convenient meeting there had ensured the security around Ozun was not that tight the night he died. “I am not a good man, but I will protect the Zhao. If Wu proves to be an able leader, I will have nothing to worry about…if she does not…well, that will be an interesting day.” With a sigh, Long Feng turned away from the statue, nodding to the two guards he had posted around the room to compliment the small patrol stationed outside it.

Let Wu dream herself his master, it mattered not. What mattered was her abilities. Thus far, she had proven amiable to logical plans and expansions, but if she were to endanger the Zhao there would be only one recourse to be had. As it stood, he had a meeting to attend with the craftsmen of the city. The Empress wanted her labor force and she wanted it quite soon. She likely imagined that he would merely rally the craftsmen and perhaps enhance their tools. Long Feng grinned despite himself. As a point of fact, he planned to make their partnership just a tad bit more equal. Let her keep her imagined control over him, but he would not allow her to forgot that he was a resource that was not be disposed of lightly.

An army of Terracotta showing up to work upon the roads would be a fairly easy message to send. With the help of his contacts amongst the architectural clans the disruption caused by this move would be minimal…and the look on Wu’s face as she realized just what she had ordered would be priceless.

Always a bonus.

OOC: New Spell.

Call Forth the Clay Idol

Spell Description: This spell animates a group of terracotta statues. The number can vary greatly from one to thousands. The animated Terracotta are typical of Golems, dull, efficient, ceaseless and without an ounce of creativity in their body. They still have their uses however, one the wise sage can plainly see…

Spell Cost & Time: No cost, 2 days per batch of one thousand idols.

3x batches of Terracotta men under construction, complete in two days or six, I'm going to get clarification on that. Depending on if each on counts as a batch or three thousand counts as a batch unto itself.

I'd wait until I got an answer, but I'd just spent thirty minutes typing this up and darned if I'm going to wait. :P

"Bring your men, we will head to my home where we may feast tonight and speak of why you have come here."

The speaker then set off at a quick stride, beckoning for the captain and his men to follow.

IC: The captain, Francois Beladonte, nodded to his men who began orderly following the speaker. It would be noticed that not all of the Badoise were entirely human. Two of them, in fact, had furry, double jointed, cloven hoofed legs and short horns extending from their foreheads. Interesting, at the least

"What if we found a goat or something?" the scout suggested, "Brought it back here? We could either lure...whatever it is out, or use it as a peace offering."

Morhk sniffed before answered, "Worth a try. Take Shyr with you and go find a goat."

"It is good to meet you."

The speaker entered the building, with a slight flourish gestured towards the interior of his home. Although simple, it was homely and not without charm. In the centre of the room was a large dining table made of fine wood, lining the walls were multiple cupboards. In one corner Valreign's prized sword was hung upon the wall. There were three doors around the room, from one of which pleasant smells were wafting. Valreign smiled,

"Welcome, please make yourselves at home."

IC: As with the success of the northern expeditions, several groups of scouts, led by one professional soldier each, are being sent to venture into the southwestern portion of the Crown of the World to see if any mineral wealth in the region can be gained, on top of if there are any tribes in the region. Duke Victus Tarr, himself, has also send some of the men to properly map the region, to see if there are any passes that it would be beneficial to know about so that a faster route through the mountains can eventually be created.

At the same time, the coastal passes are being further explored in that region, so as to tell where it would be appropriate, in the far future, to put trading posts where future population centers might be able to safely store their boats in the midst of storms....

The Duke was getting wary. He hadn't expected to find out that there were people in the farther zones, near the Great Lake to the north, but it was not something that was completely unexpected for his men to eventually find another people that he could consider...civilized. Nonetheless, as he made the scouting plans, as well as approving designs for the bridge's parts, he did his best to focus. Soon, he's have a better trade network inside his country as the time for certain trading sectors to meet each other would be cut from a week and a half to a day, making sure that any produce grown on the west side of the bay would not spoil by the time it came to market. Much less waste that way, he was sure.

Nonetheless, he couldn't help but be wary of his new northern..."neighbors" so to speak. He'd heard terrible rumors of them, and if any of them were true...well then, he'd need to recruit more men, eventually, to deal with the potential threat from the north. Unlikely as it may come in his lifetimes, anyway, there was far too much empty land between the two powers for now. Despite this...the worry remained as he approved of the new border maps. He hoped he'd not have to worry about these again for a long time...

OOC: Lots of scouting. To the east of my nation.

IC (Long Feng, Fen)

Long Feng did his level best to hide his smirk. Standing over one of the trenches being built for the road, watching his Terracotta men ceaselessly work upon it, far outpacing the outmatched civilian laborers in every way. True, he had not created quite the overwhelming effect he had been going for but one had to be happy with what one could realistically attain. Suddenly this train of thought was cut off suddenly at the sound of earth shattering further down the construction line. Long Feng failed to hide his smirk at the sound, even his Iron Troop escorts hid difficulty remaining blank faced. Fen was certainly enthusiastic if nothing else. He'd had his doubts about Empress Wu, but sending a battle-sorceress along to both ensure the security of the project and work upon it had been a master stroke. He considered his concerns laid to rest in that department.
Wu would lead this nation to victory or the Zhao people themselves would fail. They had a strong Empress and a wise one. Any blame for failure could not rest with the Empress, who had proved just as canny as he. Still, there was work to be done back in the city. While his Terracotta men had helped matters, there was still much work to be done.
OOC: Three batches of Terracotta men completed, as Humva has confirmed the day you start construction counts torwards the total time needed.
Using Golems and a Battlemage to help complete the road. Humva has informed me that those two shave off seven weeks total.
So, if I'm not mistaken, the buildtime for my road network is now...4 weeks and two days. I am also starting construction on two more batches of terracotta men.

IC: Sherdrian Ambassador, Suioto-Kyo Government Quarter

"Horrians, huh?" the one guard whisper to his companion. "What do you think they want?"

"The same thing we do." she replied. "Advancing trade relations."

"That makes sense." he replied, as he looked around. If the outside was a marvel to him, this indoors region seemed almost captivating in its foreignness. "Hey, why do you think there's so few statues to the gods? Or... well, no statues to the gods."

"They don't worship our gods, you dolt. I'm not even sure who they worship."

"Oh..."

"Just be quiet and wait until we can have our audience. Actually... be quiet after that, too. The ambassador is doing the talking, not us."

The ambassador shook his head as he looked to his whispering companions. Though tired, he remained upright, refusing to give anything less than the proper appearance of steadfastness that a proper Sherdrian should have. They would not look weak to their neighbors; not here, not now.

OOC: Actions Taken - I am now promoting the NPC Commander of the Soldiers of the Wind, Commander Stakaffirak, to battlemage. He shall bathe in the Fountain of Mana, and in seven days (1-18-14) shall be the newest mage in Sherdria.

OOC: Time to act upon this.

IC: Sherdria, the Temple of Magic

Commander Stakaffirak looked down at his claws with a strange look as he stood before the priests. There was something different about them, it seemed... about all of him. He could feel the power coursing through his body... or perhaps that was simply his mind playing tricks on him. The pure power of the elements was at his disposal, now.

"Thus, under the eyes of the gods, we charge you once more with the safety and protection of Sherdria." High Priest Metothra declared. "To defend it from all threats from both without..."

His eyes wavered slightly, looking just briefly to both Authrasu (who had a worried look on his brow) and Heatithria (who was giving a smug look to Authrasu), as he finished by saying, "... and within. You are free to leave, Commander, and to return to your former position."

The scouts would find, as they progressed northward, that the World's Cup was meager at best as far as vegetation went. Occasionally they would pass through towering forests, but for the most part they traveled dry foothills. The mountains started up very quickly, and soon they were forced to follow the coastline eastward, the mountains becoming too treacherous for them. No threats were seen; a scattered barbarian tribe here and there was encountered, but nothing of any considerable size. Average mineral deposits, dry pastures, and poor farmland were found by the coast, but due to the mountains proving resilient to entry, the scouts were unable to confirm the rumors of great wealth resting in those fabled peaks.

IC: Sherdria, Scouts in the Northern Regions

Over the course of time the scouts traveled, their base camp had moved further into the Northern Regions. The Lord of Daeroth was looking increasingly tired and angry as the failure s began adding up. Eventually, after their lengthy times without any success, he decided that a new plan should be enacted.

"This is my decree." he said to his main lieutenants, within the planning tent. "For the safety of us all, we shall along these mountains establish a new settlement - one which shall be our forward base in days to come, as we expand. And let this settlement be known as - Northpoint Watch!"

Couriers were sent back to Daeorth to send for another nine hundred troops from the Irregulars and any auxiliary villagers brave enough to try and settle the lands - of which there would be plenty; most likely, more than there would be soldiers. They could then begin settling.

OOC: Commissioning the settlement of Northpoint Watch. Northpoint Watch is being built along the mountains, in an area where the mineral deposits seem the most plentiful. Bonus points if any of those pastures are here, so we can bring up some farm animals as well. From here, scouting will resume with greater vigor in an attempt to penetrate the mountains and continue the search for wealth.

IC: One foggy morning in Vardal was a normal one. As it sat along the ridge of the peninsula that led into the bay, Vardal was greatly situated at a variety of heights, making it an ideal tiered city. However, due to it's unique place, it also was constantly needing patrols from local vessels, working not only on the Vardali coin, but also out of a sense of security. Today, Captain Eumos was the man in charge of the various boat squadrons in the area. He was to expect a boat from a foreign land, he'd been told, and he'd also been warned to board them should they be hostile. Finally, after a goodly time, the boat appeared, just as the scouting boats had foretold. The fog lifted enough for flags to be hoisted, so Captain Eumos hoisted the flag of Vardal.

"Stay your water, declare your business" the Captain said, watching the, as he'd later know, Sherdrian boat.

IC (Qin Fu)

Days passed, as did nights, until at last Qin Fu and his guests got word from the court of the Empress. The scroll was terse and to the point in stark contrast to the normal manner of the Empress. One got the impression she had quite alot to deal with. Nonetheless, Qin Fu had his guests roused from their slumber and presented to him. The overweight elder looked fire and somewhat disturbed as his guests were assembled before him. Guards silently took up positions around the room as the tension rose. Then he smiled and laughed as food was ushered into the room by a dozen servants. "My friends! The Empress has agreed! Eat and be well!"

I believe you find life such a problem because you think there are the good people and the bad people. You are wrong, of course. There are, always and only, the bad people, but some of them are on opposite sides.

IC(Zhao): "Indeed this is a day for celebration!" exclaimed the Captain. "The King will be overjoyed," he continued as he began to eat, "That we have found friends so close to our borders."

IC(Badois): When the first of the scouting reports returned, the King drew up two new projects.

The first was of a military nature- with such a vast array of foreign nations, it was important that appearances were maintained. To that extent, the Impérial Alchemist, Victore Davois, was tasked with developing enchanted weapons for the Impérial Forces that would never dull, rust, or break. (10 EP devoted)

Next, a project of infrastructure. To take advantage of the fertile volcanic soil as well as connect the new settlements with each other and the rest of the nation, the King ordered farms to be built in the south. (10 EP)

Well, would you just look at that?
