Share your best Bionicle trivia!

Recommended Posts

Bionicle has a rich and complex lore that can sometimes be a bit difficult to keep up with. Very few of us got to know every single detail of this sprawling mythology, and there are bound to be interesting little tidbits that went unnoticed by many fans.

So, here's a topic for sharing your favourite bits of Bionicle trivia.

Here's two of mine.

1. The Rahi known as the Mata Nui Cow was originally going to be called the "Mukau." This name was unfortunately rejected for being "too silly."

2. The sparkly translucent Kanohi Avokhii that came with the original Takanuva actually represents what the mask looks like when used. Takanuva canonically sparkles into battle like the pretty pretty princess he is.

What juicy bits of useless information do you know about Bionicle?

1. Raid on Vulcanus boasts the highest non-Rahi bodycount of any BIONICLE books. It's also one of the best novels, but is sadly somewhat underappreciated.

2. Tuma is the last of the leader-class Skrall, and knows the values of restraint in a leader.

3. The only piece of BIONICLE media in which more than three Great Beings appear is the Mazeka vs. Vultraz serial Brothers in Arms.

4. In that same serial, Vultraz's line about tapping his red feet together and wishing himself away is an allusion to the Wizard of Oz.

THANK you. Seriously, Raid on Vulcanus was a great book and I wish there were more novels for Bara Magna.

Here are a few of my favourites, off the top of my head:

1. I say this every time but, despite what his set looks like, Malum is canonically confirmed to not be short in at least two sources. He's actually quite large, in Raid of Vulcanus being confirmed to be, at the very least, taller than Ackar.

2. Mata Nui has stated that Ackar reminds him of Toa Onua, because he is "tremendously strong, but his power was always tempered with wisdom."

3. Scarabax beetles have wings and can fly. While this may not be a stunning revelation, allow me to explain: many insects have two pairs of wings, but some have one pair that have been specialised into something else- in flies, for example, they have halteres, which are like tiny gyroscopes that improve their flying. Beetles, however, have what are called elytra- these are the big, hard wing-covers. A few species don't have these and only have the one pair of wings, because the rule of biology is that once you make a "all of these things have this" statement there's a very good chance that one thing that has to be That Guy and not have that thing. Click, and the other scarabax beetles, very clearly have big purple elytra on their back.

Now, the thing is, elytra... don't improve flying. At all. They provide a lot of protection and they're useful for defence, but they make beetles very clumsy fliers. So, what to take home from all of this is that Click flies like a tiny beetle fool and the thought of it brings me great joy.

  • The Vahi was the first mask ever created in Bionicle's history.

A number of companies approached by Lego insisted on having a human kid in the world, but Greg Farshtey hated that idea & the Lego Company kept looking until they found a company working to work without humans.

Greg Farshtey said he disagrees with many of the story decisions in 2005, especially Vakama betraying the team.

Mata Nui was supposed to tear open Makuta's chest, but this got changed to the fragment of Aqua Magna smashing his head.

Bionicle is the trope namer for Mask of Power.

Greg's style of writing without planning ahead led to Velika being a great being, Tuyet being alive, Ancient's reveal of his allegience to the Order of Mata Nui & the conclusion to Brothers in Arms.

Antroz's poem about killing the toa was based on the children's rhyme 10 Little Indians.

1. Antroz, Vamprah, and Chirox are all named after different types of bats.

2. The Muaka was originally designed as part of the "Boneheads of Voodoo island" line and ended up being reused for bionicle with very few changes.

3. There was originally going to be a seventh tribe of matoran on Mata Nui that worshipped Makuta, Ahkmou was originally going to be one of them.

4. Bionicle: the game was originally going to have every toa playable in both their Mata and Nuva forms, but half of these levels were cut due to time constraints.

5. There were plans for a bionicle movie as far back as 2001.

6. The cancelled 'Bionicle: Legend of Mata Nui" game was going to be bundled with the kanohi Vahi.

2009 was originally supposed to be the beginning of an epic journey. Mata Nui's quest to regain his power and universe would have spanned somewhere around three years, each with a movie, making up a second trilogy. Mata Nui and his friends would travel to different planets, one being a jungle planet full of dinosaur-like creatures.

There are, I think. But very very rare. Umbra's "skates" were so weird to the Toa, they were genuinely surprised.

The shadow toa were just evil versions of the toa. Greg's idea of the Toa absorbing the shadows is the canon depiction of their defeat, but some people prefer C.A. Hapka's idea of the toa using teamwork to defeat the evil toa.

That was mentioned in the extra content in Legends of Metru-Nui, right? It relates to artificial wheels made by MU folks, not stuff on creatures, like Umbra, Terrain Crawler, or Kane-Ra if you count treads. Well, later Avak created the Destral Cycle, which was named by Antroz once he took it as a war prize against the Dark Hunters. As the first recorded vehicle to use wheels, that means that Avak was the first to discover the wheel for the Matoran Universe, and for a motorcycle no less.

Spherus Magna is unbelievably larger than Earth considering its Rocky nature. The Mata Nui robot is said to be around 12'000km tall (the diameter of the Earth) and it essentially sank in the oceans of Aqua Magna. As it is a Moon of Bara Magna, the moon is already bigger than Earth and by extention Spherus Magna.

I only half remember this, so some of this might not be true in the slightest, but I believe I heard that in the original story bible(s?) the Toa Inika/Mahri were originally supposed to also go to Karda Nui and do their thing there. After this, things are bit more vaguer, as the story team never really got around to fleshing out this part of the original story bible, but something along the lines of after that story year was finished, we would've then switched back to the Toa Nuva, who were going to do some island hopping stuff along the Southern Islands(?), which then would've awakened Mata Nui. Or something like that. I think.

Don't forget this gem.

Not sure how well-known these are, but:

*Originally, the Toa were going to be different ages, with Lewa being youngest and Onua oldest.

*The "big reveal" for BIONICLE was developed by art director Christian Faber, inspired by the pills he had to take to treat his benign brain tumor. He imagined the pills contained tiny warriors fighting to heal a mysterious giant, himself.

*Originally, BIONICLE toys were going to be able to decapitate each other. Tests found that it made it difficult for children to bond emotionally with them, and it was reworked as the masks being knocked off.

*Some forms of early BIONICLE media (namely Kopaka and Tahu's promotional animations, as well as certain actions scenes in Mask of Light) were inspired by Bob Thompson's interest in snowboarding and other extreme sports.

*Both a film and video game were planned in 2001. The film was canceled and the video game released to highly limited availability, leaving only an inconclusive comic series meant to tie into the film. Meanwhile, LEGO hired Templar Studios to create Mata Nui Online Game, meant to be a little side adventure. MNOG turned out to be one of the most popular story sources for BIONICLE's entire run.

*In 2005, there was a teased in a comic for a webcomic about the Toa Hordika rescuing Turaga Dume. It was never released.

*The 2007 comic titled "Mask of Life, Mask of Doom" was supposed to contain the word "Death" for "Doom," but it was changed. "Death" was used in the titles of two future BIONICLE comics.

Many of the voice actors who worked on the first three Bionicle movies came from the Ocean Group, and had previously worked on anime dubs such as Dragon Ball Z. A surprisingly large number of them later went on to voice characters in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

Greg Farshtey used to (still does?) play World of Warcraft; he named a lot of his WoW characters after characters from Bionicle. Some say that the inverse is true for Teridax, who was supposedly Greg's WoW character first and then later the name given to Metru Nui's Makuta.

The prototype design for the Kanohi Ignika seen in the console versions of Bionicle Heroes was later canonised as the Ignika's original form before it fused with Vezon's face.

Besides also being the Maori words for Fire, Water, Air, Ice, Stone, and Earth. The Names of Tahu, Gali, and Lewa also have routes in other cultures as well. Tahu is a Hungarian name, Gali is a Hawaiian name, and Lewa is an African name. Lewa however is the only one who I can remember what his name actually means, and his name in African means Beautiful. A little bit commical and questionable when you take his Kanohi Miru into account.

 Tahu is a Hungarian name

Being Hungarian, I've never ever heard of Tahu being a Hungarian name, current or archaic. It's never appeared in any literature, you can't officially name a child Tahu, nor does it mean anything in the language. Do you have a source on this?

I'm not trying to be difficult, I'm just genuinely curious  :P

Okay correction. I was just going off of my memory for his name. Turns out Tahu is an Arabic name. But for Gali and Lewa I am almost certain of their origins.

  • The Bahrag were originally going to be spider-esque creatures that could carry Bohrok on their backs.

There was a concept design of the Ignika that resembled the Mata Nui robot's face.

Legends of Metru Nui was once slated for a theatrical release.

A prototype teaser poster for 2009 showed a massive Vahki joint sticking out of the sand in the background, a Scarabax beetle in the foreground, and between them stood... Matoro, oddly enough.

There was one last element to be introduced but never was: Void.

Not quite true. IIRC, the Void element was a theory proposed by a well-known BZPer (I can't for the life of me remember who). It was inspired by Makuta's famous "I am nothing" monologue in the MNOG. The theory was that Makuta was that, since shadow doesn't technically exist - it's just the absence of light - Makuta was originally intended to have powers over nothingness, or Void. A variation on the concept proposed Void as a True Neutral element, to balance out Light and Shadow. However, the Void element was never brought to Greg, or if it was, he didn't approve it.

I'm not confident in my recollection of the details here, but what I do know is that Void was not Greg's idea. It originated on BZP.

Oh, and I guess I'd better provide my fair share of trivia. Here goes:

  • The three winners of the 2015 Mask Maker Challenge were drawn into an illustration of Ekimu in his forge. What you might not have noticed is that two of them also have a cameo in Episode 3 of The Journey to One: hanging above the door to the Temple of Light. Their creators must be very proud.

Believe it or not, Stone and Earth are not the two most redundant Elements or Powers in G1. Mutation is actually a completely convoluted power. One such example is when Roodaka turned a pIt of Falling Sand that Spiriah was sinking into, she mutated it into Fire Flies. Yes, a non-living thing turning into something living.... YES.

Also with this, Protodermis is neither Mercury nor Water, it has only been referred to as such poetically, though most misconstrued it's usage as being literal. Besides, Having it be either or Water or Mercury would just be Stupid and Pointless, since Mercury is a Toxic and incredibly difficult to work with element (in terms of real world elements), and water is literally it's own element.

In addition to this, there are actually quite a few many actual Materials in BIONICLE, some of which being Elements themselves. Elements such as Stone, Earth, and Iron. Whilst there were Individual materials, such as Protodermis (liquid, Solid, Organic, Energized), Protosteel, Ehksidian, Bone, Cloth, Bamboo, Wood, Shells, Seaweed, and Flax. Which in turn could be turned into and or used with other things on their own.

There were also a few recorded foods, though the only two I can ever think of are Bula Berries and Thornax Soup.
