Were the Rahkshi just the antitheses of the Toa Nuva?

Recommended Posts

I had a thought today. The six Rahkshi that were sent to stop the Toa Nuva from finding the seventh Toa had powers that kind of correlate to the Toa's.

Turahk = Fear, and Fire is associated with courage.

Vorahk = Hunger, and Earth is associated with strength.

Panrahk = Fragmentation, and stone is associated with stability. Stone resists better than other building materials the tendency to fall apart.

Kurahk = Anger, and ice is associated with calm, or the absence of emotion. Anger is perhaps the strongest of all emotions, and those with the elemental power of Ice tend to avoid showing any emotion.

Guurahk = Disintegration. This one is kind of reaching, I know, but disintegration is the ultimate death of something and water tends to rejuvenate things.

Lerahk = Poison. I don't know how this has to do with Air. All right, my whole theory starts to fall apart here, but I think the first four are strong enough correlations to make one think that the powers were selected to negate those of the Toa.

Any thoughts?

You're close. The powers of those six Rahkshi were more the antithesis of the Principles that the Matoran lived by. These Principles were elaborated on in MNOG2, and were derived from aspects of the Three Virtues. They were:

Ga-Koro: Purity, which is derived from Unity
Le-Koro: Faith, which is derived from a combination of Unity and Duty

Ta-Koro: Courage, which is derived from Duty

Onu-Koro: Prosperity, which is derived from a combination of Duty and Destiny

Ko-Koro: Peace, which is derived from Destiny

Po-Koro: Creation, which is derived from a combination of Unity and Destiny

However, because of the nature of the Principles, not all of them match up. For example, Purity's (Ga-Koro) enemy is Poison, which is Lerahk. Faith's (Le-Koro) enemy is Fragmentation, which is Panrahk's power. So, the Rahkshi powers are the reverse of the Matoran Principles, but the color's of each don't always match up.

It's an interesting coincidence that the three that don't match up are also the first three Rahkshi Teridax unleashed upon the island, while the second batch are perfect matches for the respective villages.

If you’re going by color, disintegration would have nothing to do with Gali’s element. Instead, it would be her personality: Gali is often the one that holds the team together, which would be the opposite of disintegration.

But as previously stated, it’s the Principles, not the elements or the Toa. This also only applies to the six Rahkshi released as sets in 2003. Gravity and Sonics are both Toa elements, and I doubt Chain Lightning and Heat Vision are the antithesis of anything.

Would be funny if they just used the antitheses of the elements. They already have Heat/Cold Resistance and Vacuum for Fire/Ice/Air, they would only need Desiccation, Weathering, and Erosion for Water/Stone/Earth :P

Well, weathering and erosion are kinda accounted for by disintegration. Kamen even refers to disintegration as the weathering of their statues in MNOG 2.

Yeah I was just trying to make them slightly more pertinent to the respective element :P

Nice catch though. :)

I literally have never gotten why the Rahkshi had those particular powers until this thread. It always seemed like a really strange mix to me - but then, I haven't watched Mask of Light since I was a kid. I guess that movie wasn't a total wash after all.

I have slept for so long. My dreams have been dark ones. But now I am awakened. Now the scattered elements of my being are rejoined. Now I am whole. And the Darkness can not stand before me.

Yeah, Mata Nui Online Game II outlines the whole Principles/Skills thing. This is a full chart of them all, taken from BS01:

Principles:

Courage (Ta-Koro)

Purity (Ga-Koro)

Creation (Po-Koro)

Peace (Ko-Koro)

Faith (Le-Koro)

Prosperity (Onu-Koro)

Skills:

Strength (Ta-Koro)

Speed (Ga-Koro)

Strategy (Po-Koro)

Willpower (Ko-Koro)

Accuracy (Le-Koro)

Stamina (Onu-Koro)

Enemies:

Fear (Turahk)

Poison (Lerahk)

Disintegration (Guurahk)

Anger (Kurahk)

Fragmentation (Panrahk)

Hunger (Vorahk)

Or:

Courage - Strength - Fear

Purity - Speed - Poison

Creation - Strategy - Disintegration

Peace - Willpower - Anger

Faith - Accuracy - Fragmentation

Prosperity - Stamina - Hunger

As said before, the powers of Turahk, Kurahk, and Vorahk match up to their respective village by color, but the powers of Lerahk, Guurahk, and Panrahk do not.

Does anyone know for sure? We had the kraata packs in 2003, but I don't know if the official chart listing all the colors existed before 2004.

Here is BZPower's official Wild Kraata Color Chart. According to the page: "Rahkshi in these colors are not coming out as sets, although some will make appearances in the storyline next year." I think the "next year" was 2004, since quite a few secondary Rahkshi appeared in the Adventures books, so this would imply the 42 kraata powers did exist in '03.
