IC: Learu (Some Mountain)

"How the Karz am I meant to answer that? Gee Xar, I haven't really thought about it! I can't say it's something that's occurred to me." The frustration in her voice was rising, fuelled by Xar's own anger. "Not everyone spends all their time sitting and thinking out this long internal dialogue about why they do what they do. I just... didn't."

"Sorry, I'll go wallow in my remorse for a while and then drown myself. What would that even accomplish? You're mad that people died, you're mad that I'm not dead. I didn't kill the others. Everyone who did is already gone. You're angry and you're grieving and you want someone to blame, so you're putting it all on me, as if I personally have the blood of everyone my father or Aclaraung killed on my hands." Aru clenched her claws into fists - trying to reason with Xar was infuriating. "You know what I think? I think you blame yourself. I think that's why you're so furious, why you're self-harming with your own plasma, why you want to push away the only other person who's been through what you've been through. You blame yourself for trusting me, or you blame yourself for not stopping it from happening, or some other stupid reason, but either way, you're stupidly blaming yourself, correctly recognising that as stupid, and then throwing those emotions in whatever direction you can without interrogating them."

She went silent for a moment.

"I mean. That's what I think, anyway."

"That's what you 'think'? A most compelling analysis, professor. You know where you can stick it."

Once again, I jumped into open space and spread my wings. At this altitude, some low clouds graced the peaks of the mountains, and I made a point of disappearing into one, superheating it into a lethal state as I passed through.

IC:

As the other two walked outside to have their morning meal, Aclaraung set about devouring the Mahi he'd captured for himself. Between bites, he couldn't help but notice as their conversation took on a noticeably less genial tone, shifting into an argument within moments. "Faster than I expected," he mused to himself. "I suppose he's coming out of his hibernation better than I thought he might." He bit off another piece as he heard the pair flying away. "Well, they'll get it figured out soon enough."

Of course, he hadn't even told Learu that there were some others that he allowed to escape, beyond the pair of them. No doubt she'd be unhappy with the revelation, while Xaruthan would be...perhaps not overjoyed, but at least relieved to know that they two weren't the last of their kind. Another story for another day; let them sort out their frustrations now with him away, and see how receptive they might be to his reasoning once he returned.

Though he doubted that either would be whatsoever. So be it; just another burden that destiny has seen fit to set on my back.

Once he finished the last of his Mahi, he tossed the remaining detritus in the pit where he'd tossed the offal, alongside tossing in what remained from the other Mahi after he cleaned both of them; in a second more, all the waste was incinerated by his flame. The remaining Mahi—one missing a leg, thanks to Xar—went deeper, into the coldest cave of the entire complex, where they'd wait until one of the few others there beyond himself, Learu, and Xaruthan decided they were hungry enough to eat one.

With one last look around the complex of caverns—one that he'd begun to accept as his new home, but which, all of a sudden, felt so alien and so far from home, for some reason—he turned, running out the exit that the other two had taken, diving off the cliff and spreading his wings for an easy glide down to Ga-Koro, to find out just what was going on with all the crystalline-armoured ships and people pulling into the bay.

IC: Lainai

Sheet ice and powdery rime cracked and clattered to the floor as every last gasp of heat drained from the small chamber.

Lainai's rest had been unexpectedly long. The injuries from their...dispute… had taken time to heal.

Their violet-tinged nostrils flared. Fire on the winds. Not just the smog of the fire mountain. Something… else.

Ice-cold liquid coursed through their veins as the Mystix placed a claw on the barrier to their frosty enclave. They allowed some of the heat to return to their ice then, levelling their shoulder, they easily smashed through into the rest of the nest.

Needle-like scales and armored plates alike rustled as they moved. As moisture condenses from the air, their pale-blue and violet form took on a pale white sheen from the rime that crawled across them.

By the time sunlight once more shone off of Alcaraung's form, they had once more achieved a coating of crystalline ice, adding to her imposing majesty.

Cryonic fog wisping from her jaws, Lainai spread their wings and stretched for the first time in countless months. They were hungry, and solitude-weary.

Turning their attention to their surroundings, the frost drake made her way amongst the slopes of Ihu, seeing what the day would bring. Perhaps a fresh Muaka cat, or some similar meal. If they were lucky.

And if not? Well, Lainai would find something else, if need be. She was nothing if not resourceful...

OOC: To any in Ihu who wish to befrend a dragon, Lainai the Rimed is open for interaction!

IC: Xaruthan (Mountains)

As I rose out of the energy storm I had created, I gazed over the horizon, taking in the see of rocky blades sticking out of the mist, the ice clinging to each of them in symbiosis. The morning sun, as it cascaded over the mountain peaks, was stained red with blood, but in its sublime beauty I couldn't see the horror in its light. High, high up and higher I flew, feeling the moisture of the clouds evaporating from my skin as I glided against them.

This, then, was my life. My freedom. Free to go anywhere, do anything - but cursed with the knowledge that there was nobody left to share it with. I didn't know whether I could ever forgive Aru, it didn't even cross my mind at that time. Twisting my body, I changed trajectory midair and swooped down under the Death Cloud. I looked upon its blue majesty, spitting ions in the ether like an angry god. Then, in a flash, it was gone. It was just a cloud again, just steam.

My power could alter the very state of matter itself, I could turn boulders to magma, mist into a deadly energized haze - but it was nothing. So inconsequential and empty. It couldn't heal. It could only destroy. So, perhaps Aru was right, in a way. Of all I was capable of, I had been designed from a young age for war, for conquest.

everythingyoudidtomeeeee

Ignotus' melting face flashed before my eyes, and the salt my tears left behind stung more bitterly. The icy wind soothed and enflamed both my partially-melted right hand, and the still-open cut on my arm, but all I felt was numbness. I wished I was still frozen.

After some time of flying aimlessly, I looked up. Perhaps my instincts were carrying me - the great Mangai volcano loomed on the horizon, black smoke from lava farms rising and dissipating into the dark canopy above. There was something within me that felt drawn to its heat, but it wasn't a conscious decision. Those 'instincts' of mine were proving to have something of a mind of their own.

IC: Lainai, dinnertime!

The frost Mystix was starting to feel weariness leach into her bones. She was hungry, gnawingly so, and still no sign of any food on this blasted landscape.

Until she heard the roar. Something that resonated in their bones, and set the teeth on edge.

They smiled and, shaking hoar frost from their wings, launched herself from the mountainside towards the sound of a fresh meal.

 *  *  *

The group of Matoran received an unexpected surprise as a lanky, spiky figure of ice and metal scraped to a halt to the left of the Muaka from them. Lainai regarded the group momentarily, but determined they seemed to have no interest or claim to the felid before them.

To Kregero, Savrehn and Atamai, it would feel as if the last gasp of heat had leached from the air around them.

Lainai's violet eyes glared hungrily at the Muaka. Their lip curled up, crackling through the shell of ice. When they spoke, their voice was melodious and hollow, like the howl of blizzard wind over a distant peak.

"Ahhhhhhhhhhh, at last. Thank you for the meal, friend Muaka."

She opened her faintly luminous maw, and breathed out a lethal stream of liquid gasses and freezing air towards the cat, meaning to freeze the beast where it stood.

IC: Aelied - Akiri's Office, Ko-Koro

The Bo-Toa inclined his head at the Captain. "Thank you, Captain Korzaa. If I may, allow me to enlighten everyone as to some of the missing context. The majority of my team were in Ga-Koro when the initial expedition arrived; a group of them travelled with us to Ko-Wahi when we came to participate in the liberation of Ko-Koro. One of my team, Casanuva, grew quite close to one of the Dasaka, a woman by the name of Soraph Vilda; Vilda being her clan. "

Aelied cleared his throat; this next part would have to be presented carefully. He decided to go with the closest to the unvarnished truth as possible. "She took it upon herself to enter the Koro herself ahead of our visit; I dispatched Skorm to escort her as Casanuva had possibly been identified by the Legacy, but they were separated. She was taken by members of the Legacy and implanted with a Parakuka, and she has been in a coma since. In the interest of her safety, she was moved from Ihu-Koro to the Nuju-Marrion Research Hospital, before being remanded to our care."

He leaned back, shrugging off his cloak onto the chair rest behind him. The climate in here wasn't quite as refreshing as Le-Wahi, but it was still better than outside. "If the newly arrived Dasaka take umbrage that one of their own was attacked, I take full responsibility. I chose to let her go with an escort, since I believed at the time she was going to make her way inside regardless of who was with her. But that leads me to my next point; when the Kalta moved on Ko-Koro, one of the Dasaka helped us; one Dakte Ageru. His assistance was not instrumental overall, but the Dasaka did stand with us when we needed them; repaying them in kind in their time of need seems appropriate."

Politically, that was the extent of the situation. Minor Dasaka involvement, but it was good to have all one's chips on the table. But now to get to why he had come to the Akiri when he had first heard of the Dasaka arriving en masse. "That being said, however, I would like to share some insight. From my discussions with their elder, Mako, and from when Soraph was still conscious, I believe I can give some context as to their capabilities and culture. They look like Matoran, Toa, and Turaga, and with the exception of their mental abilities instead of elements, function very similarly. They recognize four 'disciplines' of abilities: telepathy, illusions, telekinesis, and... 'soulswords'. It is difficult to explain without an visual, but Dakte was one such Menti, as their warriors are called. Burns as hot as plasma, as keen as a Fe-Toa's tempered blade, but as easy to wield for the user as any weapon. Many, if not all of them, possess minor telepathy to communicate with each other; some, including Soraph and Mako Vilda, can exert greater mental control, over anybody. They are additionally hardened against our own telepaths, doubtlessly from generations of training and living with it."

He leaned forward, steepling his fingers. "I trained my team personally. Selected them, chose their masks, sculpted them into the force they would need to be. When I gave Vakua his Suletu, it was because I had vetted him, tested him, and he proved to me that he could be trusted with that responsibility. These Dasaka... Korzaa, I feel as you do. It is our Duty to help these souls. I know that, politically, Ko-Koro does owe them, even a tiny bit. But they are an unknown, above all. Their virtues are different, they have no Toa Code, and if the expedition was any indication, they will not be accustomed to the comparatively lax social norms of Mata Nui. One does not have to be a servant of Makuta to be dangerous."

IC, Atamai: Ko-Wahi

Atamai gripped his spear and grimaced. He was afraid, but tried not to show it.

Then... something... landed in front of them.

It resembled a dragon, and was unlike anything the historian had ever seen before. The air got very cold with its arrival. The other two Matoran were likely to be unaffected, but Atamai, being a Ta-Matoran, felt the change in temperature intimately.

Then the being spoke, surprising Atamai. His eyes widened in shock.

"What the ####?!"

IC: Savrehn - Ko-Wahi - The Drifts

He moved away slowly, trying to keep his optics on the rahi before them while also trying to look around for an exit. He gripped his ice axe tighter, prepared to use it against the Muaka if it dared to charge him.

Savrehn had faced them before. Normally not this close though, and normally alone. Now there were two more lives he had to take care of in this situation. He allowed himself to look away from it, as long as the other two kept their focus on what the beast was doing, and saw the break in the snowbank heading downhill. That was the closest he saw to an escape route.

Before he or any of the others could do anything, however, another beast made itself known. It landed between them and the Muaka that menaced them, and Savrehn’s optics widened at the sight of it. He had never seen anything like this before, out here in the drifts. He had never seen anything on Mata Nui like this.

And, more surprising, it could talk.

There was a chill strong enough for even a Ko-Matoran to feel. It was as if this creature had sucked up the last bit of heat in the air, somehow.

“Oh, #### me.”

Either this winged thing would take care of their Muaka problem for them, or their situation had gotten worse.

“Oh, #### me.”

IC: Kreigero [Ko-Wahi, The Drifts]

"Mata Nui..." Kreigero whispered under her breath, stumbling as she felt the impact of the dragon's nearby landing. Even the Ko-matoran felt the rapid heat loss, and subsequent frost buildup. Kreigero had hunted many Rahi... but this was something else entirely. She opened her mouth and felt the crisp air bite her, as if the heat normally bottled under her shemagh had been sapped out from beneath the huntress.

"RUN!"

Kreigero turned around, knowing this was their only shot to escape. She did not want to stick around to find out if this Muaka was enough to sate the dragon's appetite. She saw Savrehn nearing a break in the snow bank. That would have to do. The huntress crossed over, her whimpering Hapaka following, and saw a barren downhill slope, at least as far as she could see through the intensifying storm and the dusk light.

They just needed to get out of here as fast as possible...

In an act of quick thinking, the trapper threw her circular metal shield down on the powdery snow, leaving a rotund impression with a satisfying crunch.

The plan was as obvious as it was unconventional.

"GET ON!"

Three matoran and a Hapaka would be a tight fit... but given the circumstances...

~~~
The Muaka snarled at the interruption. It was the king of the mountain, this was its hunting grounds, and the strongest of all, its dark master, had seen fit to give it the strength to defend its territory. The two infected kanohi on its shoulders were badges of honor, of power, that this interloper clearly did not respect, and would thusly be punished for.
The apex predator rose up in rage and meant to descend on the dragon with its jaws, but was rebutted by the icy breath of the mystix, turning away with a sickening cry. It felt the freezing burn in its lungs and the growing frost on its pelt, yet somehow was able to pool the energy to turn back and pounce into the air towards Lainai, claws and fangs outstretched. Fight or flight: the beast knew that running was not an option, and even if it froze mid air, the inertia could carry its claws and open maw to sink into the intruder, or at least break off the rapidly-forming ice upon impact.
Karv deigned to get a little closer and give the Toa a sniff, which resulted in the Rahi giving him a look that only a Rahi-lover could hope to read. I think it at least meant he was going to behave.
"Well, he seems to think you're a good egg. That's usually good enough for me" I offered, actually reaching out to shake his hand.
IC: Lainai. Sometimes, dinner bites back.
The Mystix opened their jaws and let out a hollow noise like a ghostly woodwind instrument. The howl sounded something like the song of a whale in the pitch of a gukko's call.
Lainai pulled their wing membranes close shut to protect them from harm, sealing them in an added layer of ice. Then, as the Muaka charged, they lept to meet it.
Talons locked with claws as the two apex predators fought for survival: the Muaka for escape, Launai for desperately-needed nutrition.
There was no malice in the dragon's attack. This was no show of force, or a trophy kill. This was a matter of food, and survival. The luxury of allowing such a worthy opponent to survive would have to wait for a less desperate occasion.
The dragon's needlelike teeth, searing cold, bristled as the wyrm bit again and again at the leathery neck folds of the feline rahi's neck. If they could find purchase past the cat's thick fur and strategic armor plates, the battle would be over quickly, and they could spare the beast any more suffering.
Even as their struggle continued, Lainai was consciously exhaling frost at every available junction. But their breath was already warming, and the Mystix felt a feverish heat growing in their muscles. They were starving, and their strength would not hold out forever.
With one more cetacean howl, the dragon kicked up and dragged with her hindlegs  raking the talons along the cat's exposed underbelly as they bit deep into the Muaka's windpipe.
He made Reordin sick. Leaning forward, fingers steepled, going on and on about all the work it had taken to groom his Toa team, the old nonce.
IC: Nichou [The Massif, Chapel] (Many weeks prior)
The carpenter moved to the chapel's exit and opened the door while looking back towards Sigrus.
"Let's get to work: with the Maru on the move, the war will be over before we know it, and there is much to prepare for."
OOC: More from the jam to come.
IC: Nichou [The Massif] (Many weeks prior, but also, the next day)
The only thing Nichou found more beautiful about the surface than sunset was sunrise. The soft amber-pink glow that filtered through the clouds above the vanishing point of the horizon, and the rejuvenating warmth that followed, reminded the carpenter that darkness would never persist forever. It showed that change was constant and took time. It humbled himself before the vast beauty of the cosmos. The rays of light turned the frost on the grass he sat cross-legged in into sparkling dew, and nearby docile rahi began to give the landscape signs of life.
The Onu-Matoran had made viewing the adieu of the stars and the greeting of the sun a part of his routine. Not only because the beauty and wonder of what could only be Mata Nui's creation never diminished in his mind, but in part due to it serving practical purposes as well. His eyesight comfortably adjusted to the sunlight as it slowly intensified. The walk outside the Massif was a good physical warm up for whatever tasks the carpenter would take on later.
Quite simply, the hillside outside the sanctuary's walls was the perfect place for Nichou to ponder life's persistent questions, plan the rest of his day, and make his morning prayer.
The prior day's plan to leave with Sigrus did not change this habit - if anything, it made Nichou savor the calm certainty even more, for he knew that soon, he would uproot himself yet again and return to face the unknowns. The night prior, Nichou had taken stock of his possessions, and realized how little he actually had anymore. The only thing to the carpenter's name, beyond the basic necessities and tools of his growing number of trades, was the chess set he was soon to finish carving. Nichou was ready to face his future, and he would do so travelling lightly. The only burdens he would carry would be his questions.
One of those questions was the anchor holding him to the Massif, the key that Brykon had helped Nichou uncover: when was he ready to leave?
Somehow, Nichou knew he would find what he was waiting for soon. As he returned to the Massif, there was a murmur that could be felt, the air crackling with an invisible excitement that the peaceful hamlet had not exhibited many times during Nichou's stay. The Onu-Matoran approached the walls, walking stick in hand.
~~~

Sigrus had spent the morning in quiet meditation perched on the rooftop of his chalet. A stone pot of tea was set at his side, long since left empty as the little cup beside it, and the steam that once ebbed from its spout had become the warm breath the monk exhaled into the crisp alpine air.

It was thin that morning in the Massif even at the village level, the result of a warring between microclimates that waxed and waned—sometimes the warm, moist air of Le-Wahi bubbled up into the hills the village nestled in, and other times the chilly, swift winds of the mountain passes churned through. The latter was the case then, and the result was a churning mass of clouds that amassed beneath the village as the cold winds turned the moist jungle air into precipitation, conjuring images of a vast white seascape and making the hamlet village feel like a fishing village at the edge of land and ocean. Sigrus liked these days immensely and could get lost in the nothingness of the white expanse, reminiscing of a time when he was an innocent navigator. While he did not dwell on the past some memories were stronger than others, and rather than to try fighting them off he embraced the healthy parts to outweigh the painful, choosing to take pleasure in joy than to be burdened in pain.

In the clouds he could hear the unseen work crews setting out for their tea harvesting routines, the soft clank of their shears and rakes becoming a gentle percussion to their jovial sing-song voices that grew more distant as they forced themselves to be roused through cajoling as a chorus. Sigrus pulled his heavy wool cloak tighter around his shoulders against the chill as the voices melted into the clouds and was about to end his idleness and rise when he heard rapid footsteps return—one of the workers was retracing their path in a hurry. The act was unusual, as they did not require anything to return for, their tools already in hand and supplies of sustenance waiting at their worksite. They'd usually only return to town if they encountered danger or had some news, and so it was by that assumption that the camerlengo hastened his breaking of meditation, collected his tea set, and went back into his house to meet whoever it was at his doorstep. Inevitably, if it was anything of importance, they knew to come to his abode first. As expected, a knock was at his door which Sigrus responded to after just a single rap. The worker seemed excited, not worried, and the countenance dissolved Sigrus' fears.

"Good morning!" the worker said. "Thought you should know: Stannis is on the road headed here. That's all! Gotta go rejoin the gang." And with that, they were gone, leaving Sigrus standing there in his doorjamb facing the prospect of his predecessor being in town on his last day as administrator.

How auspicious, yes, he surmised with amusement, and then set himself into motion as well. A moment later he was briskly walking towards the town's keep, where Brykon dwelled, and after giving the Toa-protector the news he walked back just as quick of step back to his abode in order to prepare for his own departure. It was on that way back that he ran into Nichou.

"Morning, friend. Thought you'd be pleased to hear it, Stannis is headed here."

Nichou's optics flared with surprise.

"That's wonderful news! I'm sure he'll have many stories to tell - and Mata Nui willing, good news about Ko-Koro. If he's coming straight from there, he should be arriving at the North gate..."

The Onu-Matoran waved for the camerlengo to follow.

"Let's go there and greet him!"

The carpenter's many tools jingled as he broke into a light jog towards the edge of the hamlet. He was excited at seeing his old friend again, yet there was a lingering apprehension from just how long it had been, and how much had changed since then. The concern lacing his anticipation was a mix of rational and irrational, and so instead of dwelling on what it meant to be on the verge of completing his quest from many months ago, Nichou focused on the path underfoot, and the beings in his path. Now wasn't the time to think.

"Go on ahead. I have things to attend to but will be with shortly, yes," Sigrus chimed in response before continuing on his way.

Stannis Maru's silhouetted body was visible long before his white eyes materialized from within the shrouding milky mist. He walked with a purposeful but slow shamble, Like some noble ghoul bidden to rise and march long after his campaign was finished, clearly weary yet stubborn enough not to let his sagacious visage be betrayed by injury. Of his weapons, which were usually all slung on his back like the pikes he carried as a Matoran, one was held in hand like a walking stick that punctuated his paces with a sodden plunge into the soft earth. He'd been walking all night and was looking forward to the refuge of his old home. The sooner he could settle his business, the better for everyone.

He could hear the village ahead as it woke for the day. He wished for no welcoming party but anticipated one regardless, knowing there were some who considered him a hero and would drop everything to greet him. It came as a small surprise, then, that the committee consisted of just one person, then, who's stout visage became quickly clear as the veil of fog evaporated.

Nichou waved to the wanderer as the Toa pierced the dreamlike fog and came into focus. The cold mist clung to the Po-Toa's form for a short time, slowly peeling away like water dripping off someone who had been swimming in a faraway shore. From Nichou's perspective, the world beyond that haze, including all of its troubles, felt mysterious again, like the island was holding its breath alongside the Onu-Matoran in anticipation of the news. Nichou's worries of Ko-Koro's state diminished as Stannis returned further within massif's aura. The Wanderer would soon dispel the fog of war as well.

"Hey Stan!" he exclaimed with a warm smile. "It's been a while."

And then, the most original joke ever to break the ice.

"Have I shrunk, or have you gotten taller?"

IC: Dartakh (The Dark Walk)

This expedition sure was going slowly.

At least they were going the right way, according to the Lieutenant.

IC: Sir Dahkapa (Ko-Koro Gates)

At last, he had arrived back home. He stood atop a crest of a hill and looked at the scarred village of Ko-Koro. While many Matoran had clearly been busy rebuilding and repairing the damage, there was still much work to be done, and the signs of the occupation could still be plainly seen. Nevertheless, he breathed a sigh of relief. The vile heretics had been expelled. He had not fallen in vain.

With eager steps, he descended down the slope, following the path to the entrance of the Koro. As he got closer, he noted how the walls were already fully renovated, and the settlement looked more like a fortress than ever. Guards could be seen patrolling everywhere. It was a valiant effort to prevent the past from being repeated, but it did also appear paranoid. In these dark days however, paranoia was more than reasonable.

The guards noted his presence, so he stopped, not far from the gates. For a moment, he almost announced himself as a servant of Ak'rei'an, but remembered what the Vortixx had said. Perhaps it was better to not mention that for now.

"Greetings!" he said to the nearby guards with a humble bow, "My name is Dahkapa, and I am returning home. How have things been here?"

:m_o::m_o::c: My pleasure!

:i::c: Sanctum Guard - City Gates

One of the guards, a Matoran with a noble Huna, pushed another out of the way to get a look at the newcomer.

“Welcome back, sir.” he said in a rough grinding voice. “I remember you from the war against Makuta’s Legacy. You fought bravely, using that time meditating in the hall of prophecies to good use. We owe him a debt of gratitude for his assistance, don’t we, soldiers?”

The others mumbled some thanks as Turo gave them all a glowering look.

“To answer your question, sir, things are coming along. The village is in functioning order, and we’re getting new technologies installed by our new Onu-Matoran Akiri all over the place. Being broken down gives us a chance to rebuild, make the city better and stronger than it was before. ‘Course, there's still blasted out areas of town that are more rubble than buildings, but the walls and the sanctum are stronger than ever. We could always use another hand though, if you’re willing to offer one.”

IC: Joskander (Obsidan Outpost)

"Just a chance meeting, huh?"  Joskander raised an eyebrow (insofar as Toa had eyebrows).  "I'm surprised you offered to help him with the body, then.  That's not the sort of job you usually see people lining up to do, y'know?"

It is not for us to decide the fate of angels.

IC: Sir Dahkapa (Ko-Koro Gates)

The reception was warmer than he had anticipated. Despite his different appearance, they still recognized him. He smiled warmly in response. Perhaps the Vortixx had been right.

"I am pleased to hear all that. I pray to- erm, Mata Nui that the Koro may never fall again!" He briefly considered the request. For now, Ko-Koro was safe, and their enemies were hiding. If he stayed here to help with the defences, the servants of Makuta would continue to gather their strength. His spirit could not rest at ease and allow that to happen. "While I will always do my best to protect my home, I am afraid I cannot stay for long. My duty beckons me."

He glanced behind himself, to see if Joskander was coming yet. But there were no signs of life in the frozen wastes. He sighed and turned back to face them. "On another matter, my companion should be coming soon. He's a Le-Toa. Tell him to wait for me here. I have... business to attend to within the Koro. May I enter?"

IC: The Dark Walk

The Ba-Toa took another step toward the plant, still hanging upside down from the ceiling, kneeling up and poking at it, the light drifting up to his hand so he could shine it over the leaves. "It seems alright," his voice came, echoing just as but no more oddly than the voices of anyone else in the darkness. He stepped back, sparing a small glower for Skrihen as she picked it off the wall, one quickly masked as he returned to his standing posture, the light returning to its hovering position. "We've stopped here long enough anyway."

The Lieutenant nodded, his eyes trailing over the cavern again, gesturing down the marked path.

"This way. Not much further."

***

The itch on their necks only got worse as they reached greater depths, down a narrower path. The earth closed in from above and the sides, but it brought no comfort. To the more agile, it meant having their mobility restricted. To the less, it meant their escape was going to be that much more difficult... if anything decided to show its face. Perhaps Kehuri was the only one who felt anything other than an increasing feeling of suffocation.

But to all of them, it meant more places an ambush could be sprung from with no warning, and no reprieve.

They finally happened upon a large growth of dead weeds, vines that seemed to slowly move in the dim lightstone light. Ice crept up them, filling the plant's dead veins, before they cracked and shattered. Behind them was a short passage coated in iron, with an iron door on the right side. No handle was visible.

"I believe we've arrived. Ronan, if you would?"

IC: Kehuri

He empathized with the feeling the others must have been dealing with as they passed through the narrow tunnel. He remained as on-edge as before, however. Surely the Rahkshi must know they were there by now. They had nearly made it. They could be waiting for the return journey to not only stop them, but to also find out what they were after, and in this case, to keep it from falling into the hands of the Toa.

He searched the earth on either side of them with his element. He could work with it, no problem. If the Rahkshi attacked, he would be at his most dangerous in here. Meaning he would probably be the primary target. But he could close off both sides in an instant, or shrink the passage to only allow one Rahkshi to pass at a time, allowing the group to pick them off. On the other hand, squeezed-together as they were, Chain Lightning would rip right through them. Not if it came from the front and his Hau stopped it though. And their formation even had a Hau in the back too. There were also many ways for him to put a Rahkshi out of commission too. Bury it in a cave-in, grab it with the wall, drop it into a hole, smash it from both sides... Plus the sides were close enough that the lightstones could illuminate them, drastically reducing their blind spots. And finally, in the event they needed an escape, he could just make one. His Toa Tool was particularly geared for that, even.

Then they arrived at a hall of iron. That was comforting in its own right, even if it meant his element was a little farther away. But again they were in a choke point that narrowed their enemy's options to attack.

OOC: Short jam with @Leaf

IC: Ronan (Dark Walk)

“Ronan, if you would?”

The Fe-Toa nodded, and stepped to the front of the group. Dim though the light was, she took a moment first to carefully examine the passage and door, looking over them for any external hints she might be able to see without stepping into the iron passage.

The walls themselves were almost perfectly smooth, unnaturally so--not forged or hammered into place, but grown, slipped into the earth and used to hollow out a small alcove in the Dark Walk. Similarly, the door was almost entirely flush with the wall, only the thin outline of three of its borders possibly indicating that it was, in fact, a door, the shadows cast by those lines obvious in the flickering, whispering light of the Lieutenant’s lightstone.

Of course, all of the illusion of perfection was destroyed by the collapsed iron sheet covered in earth and vine scraps lying in the floor of the hall, shorn, torn edges surrounding the opening into the alcove itself. Edges that were sharp and jagged enough to tear at flesh just as they tore at the light shining dimly past them into the hall.

Ronan nodded again, this time to herself. Those spikes would likely be the first priority, but she refused to leave anything to chance - it wouldn’t be the first time she had encountered one trap laid bare, in order to lure the one disarming it into another. She reached out her hand, palm open, and closed her eyes, keeping the image of the passage at the forefront of her mind. She imagined the metal in front of her, and she reached into it, felt its curves and edges, crept along each inch of its surface and pushed below it, became it. What are you hiding?

The response of the metal was whining and upset, strained by the earth it supported and weakened by the loss of its brother wall, so horrifically ripped from aiding its companions in their heavy task. Moreover, the lines surrounding the door were fake etchings. There was no door where they lay, only a particularly weak section of wall.

“Onu-Toa. Need some backup.” Ronan neither opened her eyes nor turned around. “Reach into the earth above the iron ceiling, try to hold it in place - the passage is rigged to collapse. Hopefully won’t come to that, but I don’t take chances.”

IC: Zueya - Dark Walk

Zueya felt the claustrophobia even harder when the tunnel squeezed in; no room to jump, the likelihood of friendly fire climbing significantly. The metal hallway, though, that was something she could work with. Signs that they were getting closer to their goal. As the tunnel narrowed, Skorm had moved down, and Zueya slowed her pace to get closer to her fellow Kalta. When the group stopped for Ronan to study the metal bracing, Zueya shifted her weight from one foot to the other, casting out her own senses. No charge in the environment, other than the natural disruption herself and Plagia cast, and the engines of Safina's exo-matoran. If this was a trap, it was purely mechanical.

"You should be ready, too." She spoke softly to Skorm, her voice low, but not a whisper. "I trust they can handle a cave-in, but things can't exactly fall down without gravity, right?" She accentuated her remark with a playful nudge.

“You have my word we’ll keep an eye out for your green Toa-companion. In the meantime,” Turo turned to the gates, “Welcome home to the City of Ice!”

But a Pakari-wearing guard beside him gripped his shoulder as he tried to gesture Dahkapa in.

“Turo, you know know the new protocols.” The Pakari-wearer turned her stoic gaze to Dakhapa. “We will need a more specific account of your intended business, and a look at any belongings you’ll be taking into the city.”

IC: Kehuri

He turned from his vigil with a nod. "Eyes peeled," he encouraged the rest of the vanguard as he made his way to the door. Mentally, he continued running through the possible avenues of attack. They had found what they had been looking for. Now would be the most logical time for the Rahkshi to attack. Remaining as alert as he could, he approached the door and reached out. He sensed the weakness of the earth. It did indeed need support, but anyone who had spent much time in tunnels could have seen that. He raised his spear and channeled his energy through it. The earth hardened and shifted into surer, harder structures. It took but a minute, after which he lowered it, and raised his hand toward it instead, bracing it with his power, "It's safe," he said.

IC: Dartakh (The Dark Walk)

The tunnel was increasingly narrow as they approached their destination. The tall Vortixx had to crouch to fit inside. It didn't help that the group was rather large, so they had to spread out more to avoid being cramped. It was looking more and more like a trap, and Dartakh did not like it one bit.

He muttered something in relief when he heard that they had arrived.

However, the sensation of relief quickly went away when he heard that the 'passage is rigged to collapse'. Getting buried underground was not a warrior's death that he had dreamed of. He hoped the Toa in the group were strong enough to handle the weight of the earth above them. For once in his life, he had no choice but to depend on Toa to protect him.

IC: Sir Dahkapa (Ko-Koro Gates)

"Ah, of course. Understandable, as it is better to be safe than sorry."

While he was presenting all the items in his possession, starting from his weapons, he talked about his 'intended business'. "First and foremost, I intend to see my home again. It has been a while, and I simply wish to walk around and witness what has changed. More specifically, I want to visit the library. I used to spend a lot of time there before the Koro fell. Then, I... desire to meet an old friend of mine."

His voice cracked slightly at the end, and he coughed. "Excuse me."

IC: Ronan (Dark Walk)

Ronan felt the ease in pressure immediately, and nodded her approval. Almost simultaneously, the metal in the passage began to shift - the erstwhile wall almost seemed to turn into a puddle on the floor, fluidly transforming first into a blank canvas, and then into a series of fairly thin pillars, placed at strategic locations along the passage. With that additional reinforcement in place - a little extra caution never hurt anyone, after all - the false door tore down the middle, as if the metal were a sheet of film being stretched from its edges, and the hole continued to grow steadily wider. Around the doorframe, the metal grew thicker, carefully reinforcing the entrance, and - knowing as she did that the door had been fake anyway - Ronan made sure to create as ample an opening as possible for her fellows.

When she finally opened her eyes, her forehead had begun to bead with sweat and she was breathing a little heavier - partially from exertion, but primarily from the focus she had spent on manipulating the metal so precisely. She allowed herself a victorious grimace as she looked upon her work. Not bad, for our first obstacle.

IC: Safina - Ko-Wahi Dark Walk

The only good thing about the tunnels becoming narrower was that the cone of light projected from her arm-mounted lightstone torch illuminated most of the passage in front of them - as far as that light could reach, in any case. Even still, she squinted into the darkness, eyes straining fruitlessly against the fog-like shadowed depths further down the Dark Walk. Kehuri turned away to perform the duties requested of him.

"Eyes peeled."

“Watching,” came her response, tinny and resonant as her voice was mechanically filtered through the windscreen in front of her and bounced around through the long, partially-lit earthen corridor.

With a flick of a switch on her thumb control, the blade on her suit’s right arm extended, likewise reverberating a metallic shink down the tunnel as she brought it up to bear, daring the beasts to come at them head-on.

Though she knew they wouldn’t.

IC/NPC: Skorm/The Lieutenant

"Yeah, I'm ready," the Ba-Toa responded, his bulky form resolute and ungiving against the much smaller Vo-Toa's nudge. "Onu-Toa's got it handled for now."

The Lieutenant remained quiet, the wiry Ko-Toa looking through the door after a moment, hand on the blade still at his side. The passage on the other side of the door was pitch black and almost perfectly smooth, the light reflecting off of it eerily and casting reflections and shadows across its glassy surface. Half open twenty feet in on the other side was an enormous, featureless black slab, pushed upward by more decaying plants, still sturdy despite their death--whatever lay beyond the slab was hidden in darkness, the shaky light of the lightstones not managing to reach beyond it.

Safina was perhaps the only one who would not have to duck to go beneath the stone and see what was on the other side.

IC: Kehuri

As zealously dutiful as in the beginning, Kehuri took a position by the door, lightstone at the ready, but not shining it through, in case they somehow still had avoided attention. He kept his ears out too, alert both for signs of danger outside and inside the room. If the door was, as it appeared to be, the only exit and entrance the room had, then they were as safe as they were going to be now. Rahkshi powers did not generally lend themselves to stealth. Any attempt to enter another way would alert the party. Rahkshi, for all their danger, were not diggers.

"Now that we've found this place," he began to suggest, "Perhaps we could leave by creating our own tunnel out? Rather than risk the long, exposed walk back."

"You know the earth better than any of us, K," I said, taking a first tentative step through the doorway that Ronan had created for us. "But, if it's all the same to you, I think I'd prefer to keep to the path we already know than to dig blind around here."

I slowly made my way over to the black slab and the dead vines that kept it above the floor. One hand always on the hilt of my sword, I crouched next to the small opening that it provided into the passageway beyond -- a space so pitch-black that I could barely even tell if there was a passageway there. And certainly too small for any of us to get through without leaving ourselves vulnerable to attack.

"Role call," I said. "Anyone think they could move this rock?"

IC, Atamai: Ko-Wahi

Atamai hastily hopped onto the shield that Kreigero had thrown onto the snow. "C'mon, let's go!" he shouted. His mind was whirling. What in Mata Nui's name was that thing?

IC: Kreigero [Ko-Wahi, The Drifts]

Savrehn and Atamai clambered aboard the shield, and Kreigero began to push them both. It almost seemed futile initially, but within a few moments the inertia picked up and the makeshift sled was moving along at a slow pace. The huntress stepped aboard, her left arm wrapped around one of Savrehn's like a matoran pretzel in order to not fall off. In Kreigero's right hand was her spear, which she used to continue to push the raft along.

Reyal sprinted alongside, though soon he couldn't keep pace. The mountainside's slope had made picking up speed easy - too easy - as it continued to decline until it had surpassed thirty degrees downward. Although it was clear that they were successfully speeding away from the battle, as could be heard by the distant howling and snarling of the Muaka in it's death throes, what wasn't clear when Kreigero decided on this course of action was the approaching break in the ice shelf that popped out of the storm's low visibility in an instant.

The trapper shouted curses and turned her spear around, trying to slow down the sled. Its bamboo shaft snapped in twain.

In truth, it was too late - even if they jumped now, surely the momentum of their tumble would take the three interlinked matoran into the dark blue ice wall ahead that stretched into the abyss below.

Unless...

Kreigero dropped the spear shard and pulled out her ice pick, steeling herself for the launch.

"HANG ON!"

Reyal was running far behind, the Hapaka attempting to catch up.

OOC: Off we go into the dark below! Thanks for the distraction, @TL01 NUVA, but we're late for our appointment with the local plimbologist. Take it away, @Tarn
