I could never even bring myself to watch the American one tbh, and Ashes to Ashes just couldn't compare.
Personally, I think it lasted just long enough -- any longer would have ruined it, it was managed perfectly. We've already seen far too many examples from American TV in which a show starts off great and lasts four seasons with twenty-three episodes in each before its cancellation as a result of sheer fan hatred.
