I really like how you turned Vezon being half of Vezok into having half of him be a fishman and half be withered and skeletal.  Wonderful reinterpretation of the Staff of Fusion as well- the little bit of Metru brown and the spikes always stood out to me on the original, and you've expanded that quite a bit.

Thank you! Not many characters have an origin story as cool as his, it gave me lots of ideas I was happy to build upon. :)

Oh WOW these are incredible. I love the sheer amount of personality you've squeezed into each design; I think Kongu's my favourite out of them, all the callbacks to his Matoran design represent so well what I've often felt the Inika should have looked more like. The way the official Inika bore no resemblance to their Matoran selves never quite sat right with me; and I love how you've countered that issue on such an epic scale here.

The Piraka, too... I really like how you've taken their individual head designs and built off them in such different ways for each. I think my absolute favourite thing is the different methods you've used for each of their teeth; using an approach other than the standard Piraka skull increases their distinctness even more. I really liked reading the quotes and descriptions you picked for them in the Flickr descriptions, too; it drove home amazingly how true-to-character each of these feel, Toa and Piraka both! Really great work :D

Also, might be a minor thing, but I love the individual base pieces you've built for each of them, too; not only do they look super-effective, they ground the characters in the world ever so well too ^^

Glad you like them so, hope I didn't bore you with all that text!

Yeah, for me the 2001-03 games/animations informed so much of the Toa's personalities, Kongu especially.
Though it would never sit right as canon, in my mind the this is what the Toa would choose to look like after reuniting with their Matoran friends in Metru Nui!

The Piraka were especially enjoyable to work on, their incredibly diverse powers and personalities gave me lots of ideas.
I wanted to make them look just as dysfunctional together as they were in the story!

For sure, I was surprised at just how much was added by these relatively simple bases.
Plus they're great at stopping them from falling over haha.

They all look amazing, but the Piraka revamps are easily the best in my opinion. Hakann is probably my favorite one.

That's fair, the Piraka were definitely more enjoyable to work on!

Hakann's one of my favourites character-wise, I aimed to capture his destructive, manic nature with that oversized shotgun, spikes, and that darn smile.

  4. Here are six revamps/tributes for the Piraka Hakann, Avak and Vezok, and the Toa Inika Kongu, Nuparu and Matoro!

Had lots of fun, and heaps of nostalgia, reading through those ancient Bionicle texts then figuring out how I could make the most faithful revamp/tribute for each character.
Which one of these is your favourite?

  5. You did ###### good. I feel like you had some of the most consistently impressive and aesthetically pleasing entries in the entire competition. If I'm being honest, I certainly preferred your entry over the one that stole your spot in the finals.

One recommendation I'd give you is probably that you step up your photography game. The photos you took are by no means bad; they were good enough to show off how well-made your MOCs are, but they could've been more clean and better lit overall. I know my photos aren't perfect either and I could stand to improve them as well, but having the best photographic presentation you can possibly achieve does wonders for the impression a MOC can give, so I'd say we should both aim to deliver even better photos.

I always thought you were a solid builder, but you really caught my attention with your Self-MOC and each and every one of your Bio-Cup entries, so I feel like I'm seeing sharp improvement in your ability in recent times. It's amazing how much someone can improve when they keep at it. I hope to see more of your entries next time the Bio-Cup comes around. Cheers!

    Aye, cheers man!

The judges said initially they were split 50/50 between our entries - it was definitely close.

His was one of the best MOC's I've seen from him, while I certainly could've cleaned up my entry some:

Biggest thing IMO is the 'Plague Mech' had some bits (arms, lower legs) that could've been finished much better.

Totally agree about the photography - less light, better backgrounds, considering setting up a lightbox.

In hindsight I definitely should've used black card instead of white for the last one's backdrop.

If I had time I would've manually edited it out, but I made it real hard on myself lul.

Yeah man, these competitions have been great for pushing me further and getting me to explore ideas I wouldn't have on my own.

Building really is something I enjoy now, I'll see if I can keep churning 'fancy doodz' out!

  6. Here are the four entries I made for the 2018 Bio-Cup on Flickr (before I was eliminated in an epic Semi-Finals).

    Gotta say, the competition was much fiercer than last year;
Though I reckon I had it in me to go all the way, I'm quite content with my performance.

    Pridak: Paragon by Poor Disadvantaged

Under the banner of Pridak - glorious leader of our League of Six Kingdoms - we shall achieve the impossible, and end Mata Nui's great Tyranny once and for all!

Entry to the BioSector01 competition, depicting a pre-mutated Pridak as a valiant, powerful army general.

Found their wiki article on him quite useful for informing this design; went for 'Warcraft-esque' proportions to suggest physical strength, and went over-the-top fancy to hint at his pride/narcissm.

I tried to incorporate some of the iconic pieces from the original set: the blended shark-blades, big-and-long feet, and white shoulder daggers all made it in there.

Definitely not a 'perfect' moc by any stretch, but I hope you like it anyway!

  8. Wow these are some really good MOCs.

I really love the third one the most.

First the color scheme, I just love that shade of blue and with light grey and silver to complement it is such a simple yet beautiful look.

The build is also a masterpiece of parts usage such as the skull spider masks and the custom forearm design.

Overall it is a great MOC well done.

I personally dislike the skull spider masks and forearms (only used them because I couldn't find anything better), so I'm glad you found them passable. Thank you!

    .

First one's a neat idea, but too chunktastic for me to really get behind it.

Third one's aesthetically pleasing, but the proportions seem wonky and the system on the shoulders sticks out with how blocky it is.

I'm trying to pretend Galidor never existed, so that's all I got for ye.

This is the sort of feedback I love, cheers.

I meant the bulk to emulate a 'Sub'marine somewhat, but by doing so it deviated from the source quite drastically.

Could've used some of those janky blue bits better, or a sleeker shape could have been another direction to take.

Yeah, Jayko's quite 'stylized'; the small feet, smooth but large upper arms and tight waist complement the look I was going for at the expense of exact human proportions -  though I'd say the former is more important and I wouldn't change them.

You and I both - my Galidor pieces are now a long way out of sight haha.

Once a labourer, then slave, then test subject; bound in manacles engineered to be completely immune to physical or conjured force, Troddon barely endured his tribulations.
Now free solely by being overlooked in an administration error: he is nobody. Nothing.

Yet - tired, half-blind, shackled and alone - dragging the entirety of his burden with him, Troddon plods onward with a whimsical grin on his face.
Not because of any idealistic, puerile hope for a brighter future; when not only the world, but fate itself is against you, there can be no light in a tunnel that has no end.

Had a blast with the colours, especially the Metallic Blue, and blocking the black to represent skin – these abs are plastic-hard.

  10. My four entries to the 2017 Bio-Cup on Flickr.

Check it out if you haven't already, there's such a brilliant collection of stuff, and the winner is still to be decided!

I thought I'd group all of these together for the sake of convenience.

With the benefit of hindsight, I've got a few things to say about each of these, if you don't mind me doing so.

    Eliminatory Round: Bitil Revamp

The theme for the eliminatories was 'Set Revamp', where entrants could choose any Lego Set then revamp it with a Constraction twist.

Here, I strove to deliver both on what Bitil was, and what he could have been.
I tried to preserve features such as the wings, spikes, the original leg/arm pieces and his inhuman proportions (screw that goofy arsed neck though), yet add some extra flair with the forelimbs, head and some Sand Green to spice up an otherwise bland colour scheme,

While I'm happy with how this turned out, I feel like I played things quite safely and comfortably.
What was to stop me from adding more Sand Green? A custom brick-built head? Another pair of limbs perhaps?
And then, I was allowed to choose any Lego Set. Amongst the other stuff were revamps of Hero Factory, Exo-Force, Galidor, Atlantis, even a Technic Snowmobile.
While this was just another Bonkle, nothing new, seen it before, ResidentSleeper.

Here I was beginning to realize that in order to have any show against these big names, I'd need to pick up my game, get a bit creative with my choices, and make things that others haven't made before.

    Round 1: Mompka

The theme for this round was 'Rahi', where each matchup got a subtheme to work off (e.g. Ice, Horror, Bug, Alien, Cute), and Monarth the Contrarian and I got 'Air Rahi'.

The first thing I thought of was a bird, insect or dragon, but even though those wouldn't have been bad choices if I put a spin on it, I really wanted to make something that's not just unique, but uniquely unique.
So, since Flying Tarakava didn't quite work (another time :D), I had to settle with just 'unique' with a Flying Squirrel.

Keeping this small while using limited colours meant that this was a real mechanical challenge to get together, and after a surprising amount of effort I'm very fond of this little booger - he might survive a week more before I cannibalize him for his ball joints.

Round 2: "One More, Oh Mighty Sun God."

This round's theme was 'Historical', our sub-theme being 'The New World', with Djokson as my man to beat.

Against the crowd favourite, I was certain that whatever I could come up with would quite likely be my last in this competition.

So honestly, I just went for the Hail Mary by going for a three-part vignette like this.

I fully expected any one of the objects to just irredeemably suck, and was fully prepared to make the switch to something else if I couldn't get even one of these to work.

Thankfully, though I know the Spaniard, Aztec and table alike were riddled with numerous flaws that I didn't get around to addressing, each were passable enough to contribute to the final scene in their own way: The Spaniard as a comical victim, the Aztec as a sinister show-off, and the table as a crude accomplice of Aztec butchery.

In my opinion, the star is the Aztec. Initially, I wasn't even going to make these humans, but that neat little combo I found with the G2 Pouldron and the SW Finn Head was too cool to omit.

There's so much going on with this bloke: white skulls and bones, blue, dark blue and purple feathers, brown skin, gold armour and headdress, and a good old G-string to keep it together.

Though it's not my best in terms of polish or skill, it's probably the most gosh darn interesting thing I've ever cooked up.

And hey, I beat Djok by what I felt was the skin of my teeth, PogChamp.

    36943854333_c4deaa25e8_z.jpg

    Round 3: Oblivion's Emissary

This theme was... something. The judges evidently ran out of ideas, so they paired me up with good guy The Chosen One and told us all to come up with ideas ourselves.

Couldn't quite get Leo to agree to a 'Combiner Model MOC-Off', so we went to juggling ideas between one another, Though I wouldn't have minded some of the others, in the end, I really pushed for 'Dark Creepy Thing' - that just sounded like the sort of stuff we both wanted to make.

Ehm, though I've got no regrets, that might have been a mistake - he did warn me! :(

Scored a SW Kylo Ren, so I went for a MOC inspired by an enemy from the game 'Darkest Dungeon'.

Even just watching a playthrough (I haven't played it), seeing those things let rip was a pretty memorable moment for me, and I wanted to replicate some of that 'oh wut ew' feeling with my entry.

Some people acknowledged the resemblance to the description of Tren Krom from G1 Bionicle, and it's actually sort of uncanny.

In particular, I'm pleased with how I applied those 'organic' looking parts I into the build, such as the Hakaan feet, Vorox Armour, Pyrox mask and add-ons and Krika blades.

However, I'm a bit less happy with how the hood and sleeves look in the MOC's 'hidden' mode, even after so much time spent making the most minute changes to get them right for the photo.

The main thing that held this back from advancing were those rookie-tier tentacles. Though I reckoned they looked good enough, I really should have tried harder to find a better solution, or even scrapped them in favour of some other gross protrusions.

Nah, I can't really disagree with the judge's verdict.

The shaping of the torso and head, the great usage of colour, the editing, and his faithfulness to the source, it all coalesced into something that was plain brilliant.

The better MOC - and unlike my last round the better MOCer - won.

I'm very content with my placing - top seven what up B-) - in a competition which got such a large and consistent turnout.

This competition pushed me to go beyond what I'm usually comfortable with, and I'd definitely be down to try different things in the future as I continue to grow and learn.

Cheers to the judges and all my fellow contestants for making this Bio-Cup happen. I'll eagerly await the final rounds of MOCs that will decide the winner.

In Okoto’s Region of Stone, a villager might be minding his own business when the expanse of sand around them suddenly erupts into a great shimmering sea of many colours

The rays of the great hot sun that beat incessantly down upon the desert are reflected and refracted into the full lustrous spectrum of red to purple, immersing their hunched silhouette in a sheen of breath-stopping prismatic radiance.

More-often-than-not, the villager will then look up, flip off a rude gesture with a cussword, then ensure that any food they brought with them is well out of sight.

These semi-intelligent vulture-like beings have earned a reputation amongst the locals as a pest that acts purely in its own interest.

As well as food and territory (anything its rays touch is the Condor’s, according to the Condor), specimens of both genders are constantly aware of their appearance and are always searching (or fighting) for shiny trinkets and spare parts to add to their glittering mantles.

When they aren’t at the nearest waterhole admiring their own reflection (if they can find a puddle that isn’t too muddy), there will always be some scrounging through houses or harassing Villagers and their livestock.

Fortunately, when this happens all it needs to send it packing is a bit of humility - a commodity locals are more than happy to dispense …in the form of manure and DustHog droppings.

This is a combiner model that is built solely from the pieces contained in 71303 Ikir, 71304 Terak and 71301 Ketar, the Creatures of Fire, Earth, and Stone.

After a Mech, Tahtorak, and Dragon, I decided to go for a humanoid of sorts, which was both fun and difficult since the Creatures contained few of the conventional limbs and torsos (not to mention connectors) one would generally rely on.

I’m quite happy with how this turned out. I’m especially pleased with the head and torso, and I think I did a decent job applying each set’s various key pieces (though I couldn’t quite get bear-trap armour to work, sadly) and grouping the plentitude of gold, orange and purple together.

    Who is Sir Adric?

How is he related to Kentis, King Jayko, Karzon, Dracus, Vladek, or the other Knights?

Does he hail from a Kingdom in Morcia, or has he journeyed from beyond?

Does he have a superpower like the other Knights?

    Why or why not?

Why does he wield an Axe?

Was he never taught swordsmanship, or is this a deliberate choice that reflects an aspect of his character? Efficiency? Intimidation? Brutality?

    Why does he fight?

Does he truly wish to protect his King and his people and end the suffering caused by Vladek’s tyranny?

Or is he merely compelled to fight out of his pledges as a Knight, perhaps forgoing his other duties to do so?

Does he obtain liberation from performing his tasks to the utmost of his ability, or is he in reality just a slave to a system that will never let him get what he wants?

    ...

Guess we’ll never get to know, will we?

This is the result of me asking myself the question: ‘What would a Knight’s Kingdom creation look like?’

As well as relying on parts unique to the theme, I sought to emulate the basic click-jointed-brick construction fundamental to those figures released between 2004 and 2006.

Though in this instance I didn’t just want to make a Bionicle with Knight's Kingdom pieces, after obtaining a bunch I’m definitely going to in the future – some real neat metallic colours.

A wizened elder from the Region of Earth often speaks of a legendary creature that slumbers deep below the ground of Okoto. Though there are none who can confirm his claim, so too are there none who can disprove it, for no one has dared ventured to the place the elder describes as the great beast’s location.

In his saga, he recounts his arduous journey where he traverses innumerable tunnels, caverns and chasms on a quest he was fated to walk alone. He takes pleasure in describing his encounters with multi-headed scorpions, moles that breathed fire, and geodes of rock and crystal that he swears moved on their own accord.

At the climax of his fable he tells of a great tomb, hewn from the purest of crystal by ancient, mysterious hands. Venturing within its innermost chamber, he beheld a wondrous sight – a mighty sleeping dragon curled up atop a huge pile of bones, shimmering in a magnificent kaleidoscope of colour.

With great spectacle the elder describes the moment where the dragon’s eye opened, it’s penetrating gaze boring into his very mind and heart. To the wicked and selfish, the dragon shall show no quarter, it’s splendorous breath of light withering the unworthy’s very spirit before finally burning away their flesh, leaving nothing left of them but their skeleton to add to its heap.

But to the righteous and pure of heart, to the ones who live a life of integrity and selflessness; with an earthshattering ‘doot’ of its trumpet it shall bestow a grand gift of calcium and strong bones.

This is a combiner model made solely from the pieces contained in the sets 70791 Skull Warrior, 70792 Skull Slicer, 70793 Skull Basher and 70794 Skull Scorpio.

I only just got the Skull Slicer last month, so I thought it would be neat to do another G2-style combiner (even if it is a tad late). Pretty happy with how this turned out - the biggest challenge was by far finding ways to use that absolute rainbow of neon colours you've got without this looking too horrid.

Jano, Toa Mahto of Ice, once stood for others. His people as their defender, his fellow Toa as their teammate, and his calling as the only one who could fulfill it.

But entombed in a prison of ice, thrown up mere seconds before that loathed island-shattering blast enveloped him, he found himself alone.

Completely immobilized for days on end, the Toa’s mind and will deteriorated. No help came. No help would come.

Immersed within the catalyst of desperation, the beast deep within – the beast that resides within every being – awoke.

The beast shook away the last of it’s chains and cast aside the last vestiges of the Toa’s control; thoughts and being alike twisted and contorted as the thorns hidden beneath were finally permitted to surface.

Empowered by years of unspent primal rage, the ice was his first victim. Then a Kau. Then a Matoran.

Jano neither discriminates nor hesitates; the once-hero now hunts down and mauls all who possess either the audacity or misfortune to trespass in his territory.

For what it’s worth: the torso consists of two Piraka skulls, two Nuju Hordika heads, a Witch-Doctor head, two Onua claws and... a Stormer 1.0 chest-plate.

  16. This is grand. His menacing physique and audacious color scheme help set him apart from the mainstream. I quite like the head also.

    Spectacular job overall!

    :tohu:

While I'm not fond of his shorter feet, the rest of him is a sight to behold, the gold and browns go together well and I like the inclusion of a Rhotuka launcher. Well done!

Yes, he looks like the dramatic king warrior magician he really is - he thinks he is. Clawed hands are menacing and dramatic, both of them, and is always nice to see the shortly lived Metru Brown, and all those pieces from the past - you actually managed to use Tohunga feet in a MOC, if my eyes don't deceive me!

The one thing I'm not fond of is the head, the mouth in particular, that plain light gray piece specifically. Looks off, and I'm not really sure what's it supposed to be. Great work nevertheless.

Thanks all! Yeah, definitely not your run-of-the-mill colour scheme at all, haha.

Regarding the feet: I did try several different versions, including two-taloned 'Nivawk-esque' ones, but they all kind of just killed off the elegant look I was going for. I dunno, I'm quite averse to large feet in general if they don't contribute anything to a model.

Regarding the head: I had no idea what the mouth of the original was either, so I went for some mouth-piece. Perhaps it's a breathing apparatus, or a vocabulator that gives him a deep and sexy voice. I personally like the shape of it - it probably just looks terrible because it's Light Grey rather than Silver or Black.

A revamp of Conjurer, a model from the Dark Hunter Contest in 2005; in quite the likeness to the Tracker and his 'Ice Bull-Dog' I made two years ago for BZpower contest #69.

After narrowing the colour scheme to the one you see, I decided to go for an elegant, pompous and lordly look befitting a 'Dramatic Warrior King Conquerer Genius Magician'. He does it all, man.

Very, very pleased with how this turned out. All three main colours are of course very limited in variety, so I had to really make good use of what I had.
