  1. I totally forgot you got the job at Lego. This is awesome! I'm curious: how many people does the company have employed as full-time set designers?

I don't actually know the exact number of people that are listed as set designers. But between those and elements, graphics and others, ~200 at least. There's a lot of us ^^

I really liked the Mountain Police one. Is there an explanation in the lore for why there’s so much crime in the mountains to necessitate a dedicated police force? If not, please invent one for the purposes of this blog.

Well, the other wave of sets out right now are our mining expert digging for gold up there in the mountains. And you know our crooks, they're a resourceful bunch and they love gold. Somebody has to make sure they don't get it ;)

I almost sent you a picture of this set the other day from the store in order to ask you to ask the designers to stop using that cone piece on these jets. That would have been disastrous lol.

Not at all. I know exactly what you mean.

  2. I would not go with a red shirt again. When we had the black on red on my design people said it was a bit hard to make out the motive and I feel the same applies to this. The red on white looks quite cool but I would try other colour combinations as well.

  3. Then design it so it becomes an actual set =P

Well, if you can convince upper management to put it in the portfolio and have the patience to wait a year and a half for it to actually get done...I would say that is unlikely, as cool as that would be to have.

Aw. Any chance of us seeing the LDD file when it's done, then?

I doubt I'll make the file accessible, but there will be renders and pictures and everything.

Cheers, folks, glad you like it! =)

  4. Put them on Ideas. Please. I need this.

I think there might be a rule or two against designers putting personal work on ideas ^^

    Yes.

    So much yes.

But where's Max's Pursuit Special? You can't make Mad Max MOCs and not make the Pursuit Special.

A lot of people have done the Pursuit special already and I don't think I could bring much new to the table for that one. Plus, I like my big trucks.

Cheers everybody, glad you like it!

  5. Your job still sounds so great. It's awesome that it has been a good experience so far!

A while ago here you mentioned that the Bionicle team gave you Kopaka and one other mystery set. A Skull Villain?

I was given Kopaka on my first day at work and the other set was a creator set that was on my desk as a welcome gift. No other bonkle gifts here.

I'm so glad you're doing well. I hope I also will one day have the resolve it takes to work at LEGO and generate concepts on a day to day basis. For the past couple months I've had a hard time coming up with any new MOCs, but yesterday I finally made something new so hopefully I can now get back on track.

I know that when working for LEGO, I wouldn't have to be coming up with ideas all on my own — a lot of my work would be creating concepts to satisfy design briefs — but it still makes me more confident to know that I can come up with new ideas on a regular basis without creative anxiety wearing me out.

The thing about creativity is that it needs stimuli. Luckily, working in a team there's always people to ask for input and others giving feedback. It's really cool since everybody can have an influence on a wide range of things and at the same time it can give others good ideas, so I wouldn't worry too much about not having ideas. The ideas will find you ;)

  6. Hehe, well, in this case I can answer:

Oh yes it floats. It's a pretty rugged design and has a neat 1 plate thick depression in the lower deck to fit a 16x16 plate into to make the rear of the whole thing flush. As for the stickers I am not sure. I've been out of the age of taking LEGO boats into a bathtub for so long, I never thought about the stickers until now, actually.

And no, all of them were designed before I started. However, I did get to build the ones you see on the display there. As far as I know my first model that I am currently designing will come out in 2016. But aside from that, I don't know since most of my work is conceptual atm.

  7. That is the dream of a lifetime for a LEGO fan! You are so lucky!

Any chance you'd be able to tell me how someone could get a job where you're at?

Well, it might differ a bit from person to person. I applied through the job website and sent in my application, then got interviewed and then got invited to a workshop. I know other people got hired on after the successfully landed and internship with the company. It differs, but the initial step is like any other place: Send in an application.

Man, this sounds super fun. What made you want to choose City as the department to work in?

I didn't chose the City life, the City life chose me. Which is actually true, I was assigned to city. I suspect since my model portfolio features a lot of jets/planes/trucks.

Glad you're having a fantastic time already! Did you hit it off with your co-workers in the LEGO City department?

Can honestly say I have not met a single person here where I think I couldn't get along with them, they are all super nice =)

  8. Thanks everybody!

Alright! Hope your new job doesn't mean you'll have to cut back on your activity on sites like BZP.

Isn't there a policy? =/ It's not like he'd be on here in his capacity as an employee like Greg was, but rather outside his job as a civilian, but that might not signify.

I like how we call people civilians as if being a lego employee is equivalent to being enlisted, and they might leak vital military lego intel.

Considering that the things we have at the office are for months and years in advance, that intel is indeed vitel for LEGO.  I will share what I safely can and feel comfortable with, but it will be very, very little as there is almost no info I could drop without revealing something that is not announced yet.

  9.

Why is Men's Day even a thing. We don't need it. Almost every country I can think of has a patriarchal bias.

    Because equality?

As HH said, we're trying to move away from putting one gender before the other, so if that is what it's all about, having a men's day along with a women's day (like we have Mother's and Father's day already) doesn't seem like a big deal and just a logical conclusion.
